Notes: Gary qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.734/251.11. His 5.687/259.06 lost to Brad Tuttle's 5.51/267 in the first round. Gary's next event was Columbus, where he was the final DNQ with an off-pace 6.352/184.84. A 5.94/245.23 qualified #6 at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. But an opening-round 6.01/240.64 lost to eventual winner Bruce Larson's 5.59/263. Shortly after that, Gary was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #11 with a 5.813/246.77, but his improved 5.741/252.03 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.50/262 in round one. Gary was the fourth alternate at Indy with 5.740/256.92 best. He was the third alternate at Seattle at 5.875/252.59. Gary ended the year with another DNQ effort at the World Finals. His 5.820/201.25 was the sixth alternate. Photo from Columbus 1988.

Notes: Gary attempted to qualify at the Springnationals, but his 5.617/245.76 best was only good for the second alternate. | At the Night of Thrills at Englishtown, Densham ran 5.76/230.76 in the first round on a single after Opponent Frank Kramberger broke & had one of the 2 quickest ETs of the Round (2nd to John Force) to make it to the final run off where he would Defeat an unusually tardy Force with a 5.72/247.25. | He did make the field at the next race, the Grandnationals in Canada, where a 5.827/248.48 qualified #15. In the first round, he improved to 5.795/265.25 but still lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.722/256.99. Gary competed at an eight-car show at Firebird Raceway featuring Jets vs. Funny Cars on June 30. He beat Bruce McComb in the first race with a 6.35 and won his second race over Sue Merman with a 6.30/227.56. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.989/235.23 qualified #14, but he lost to Jim White in the first round, 5.899/248.64 to 6.112/233.52. He was in Seattle on August 6 for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, where he ran a strong 5.547/256.55 to qualify #13. He advanced with a 6.644/200.89 when Mike Dunn broke a rear end in the first round. In round two, he lost to eventual winner Bruce Larson, 5.353/270.10 to a 13-second shutoff. He won the Firebird Nightfire Nationals a week later (August 13). He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.10/227.76, and in the final, his 6.14/226.61 took the victory when Wally Giavia lost a blower. Gary was the fifth alternate at the Castrol GTX Fallnationals at 5.705/249.37. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA Finals, with his 5.654/263.31 taking the sixth alternate slot. Notes: Gary started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He lost to Richard Hartman in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he ran a career-best of 5.39 to qualify #7. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost. NHRA's third race of the year was the Supernationals at Houston. Densham qualified #14 and lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The story was much the same at the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #13 and lost to Mike Dunn in the first round. A 5.52/243.32 qualified #12 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again he lost in the first round; this time Mark Oswald got him. Things didn't go so well at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Gary's best of 5.63/250.62 was good for the second alternate. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.48/249.65 qualified #12, but in the first round, his 5.59/245.23 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.55/270. Only thirteen cars went up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals so qualifying wasn't so tough. Still, Gary ran 5.55/237.27 for the #9 spot. He lost to John Force in the first round. NHRA's next stop was at Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals. Gary continued to do well in qualifying, running a 5.47/258.69 for the #14 spot, but he was still looking for his first-round win in competition. He didn't get it here as in the first round, his 5.56/248.61 lost to Force's 5.36/267. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Gary qualified #8 with a 5.63/239.61. He finally got his first-round win when his 5.66/241.67 beat Jerry Caminito. A 5.69/218.18 lost to McCulloch's 5.55/256 in round two. On July 28, NHRA held its California Nationals at Sonoma. Gary qualified #13 with a 5.54/255.75. He lost in the first round, to Force. At least losing in the first round, was better than not qualifying at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. There he was the first alternate with a best of 5.56/245.70. It was back to his first-round rut at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #9, running 5.55/251.53 for the spot, but a 5.58/254.23 in round one, lost to Jim White's 5.38/276 in the "Hawaiian." He was disappointed at Indianapolis when his 5.52/256.04 failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals (second alternate). If that wasn't bad enough, he also failed to make the field at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Densham was the first alternate with a best of 5.56. He had a bit of luck on his side and got into the show when Whit Bazemore was unable to run. Gary improved to a 5.42/255.46 in the first round, but he still lost to Dunn's 5.30/274. He made the field easily at the NHRA Heartland Nationals where his 5.41/260.11 was #11 on the grid. But his first-round rut remained when he lost to Chuck Etchells' 5.39/267 with a 5.49/256.48. He got his second win light of the NHRA season at the Chief Nationals. He qualified #15 with a 5.51/256.84 and in the first round, Oswald lost a blower and Gary advanced with another 5.51 at 249.79. In round two, his 5.52/244.76 lost to Del Worsham's 5.34/279. Densham ended his '91 NHRA season in a bad way, by not qualifying at Pomona for the World Finals. His 5.53/258.10 best was the second alternate for the field. Photo from Indy 1991.

Notes: At this car's debut event: Dudley's massive, long-lasting fire soon made the 6" holes in side windows mandatory on all FCs so fire hoses could be shoved into car if driver was trapped inside. Photo from Columbus 1988 (that run). The St. Moritz was never run again.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Jim was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His best of 6.42 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.87/245.96 best was good for the fourth alternate. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 11 where ten FCs each made two runs and the two lowest ETs met in the final. Jim's first race had his 6.22/231.95 beat Johnny West's 6.23/186 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race, his 6.33/176.81 lost to Gary Densham's 6.13/234. His ETs were not good enough to get into the final. Later that month, he was at Sacramento for similarly run show. Dunn won his first race over a broken Wally Giavia with a 6.08/245.91. In his second race, he ran 5.96/247.84 to beat Jim Murphy's 6.06/228. Unfortunately, once again, his times were not good enough to make the final. Dunn failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals where his 5.92/253.09 was the fifth alternate. Going into the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona, Jim's best ET had been 5.74. But before the race, a new lock-up clutch was installed as well as dual magnetos and fuel pumps. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 5.71/253.59. The next run was 5.67/258.54 and a final 5.60/267.45 qualified #13. He upset a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein in the opening round with yet another career-best of 5.55 at 266.98, but he lost to Mark Oswald in round two.

Notes: Powder blue. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1982. Mike qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/239.36. In the first round, he and opponent Dale Pulde smoked the tires with Mike's 7.48/225.56 getting the win light over Dale's 7.66/110. In the second round, he again went up in smoke, and he shut off to an 8.38/115.23 that lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/238 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Dunn qualified #4 with a 6.04/238.99. In the first round, his 6.31/232.55 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.29/237. Mike was at OCIR in April for the Coor's 64-car show. He set Low ET there, with a 5.96, but in the opening round, he got out of shape in his race with Kenny Bernstein and ended up smacking the guardrail. In May, he won the NHRA Division Six race at Baylands. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #3 with a 6.15/235.60 (Top Speed). in the opening round, he beat Sherm Gunn and a 6.21/230.17 beat Tom McEwen in the semifinal. His final-round opponent was Gary Densham. Mike easily took the victory with a 6.28/234.37 as Densham slowed to 6.61/215. The "Hawaiian" team showed that they were making some serious horsepower at Columbus when Dunn ran 246.93 in qualifying. But the power wasn't hitting the ground, as the ET was only 6.14. That gave him the #15 spot in the field, and he lost to Dale Pulde in round one. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Although Mike only qualified #13, he beat John Lombardo, a tire-smoking Billy Meyer, and Gary Burgin, who broke, to reach the final. There he went up against Don Prudhomme. His final round, 6.15/237.46, finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.00/241. | 6.18 251.18 AHRA US 30 1982

Notes: Mike and Joe had a good season in '89. It started at the Winternationals, where Mike qualified #2 with a 5.34/279.85 (Top Speed). He had a bit of a snooze in the first round, and his 5.42/269.13 lost to Jim White's 5.46/258. They went on to the Supernationals, where they lost in the first round once again. At the Gatornationals, Mike set track records of 5.28/280.19 in qualifying #1, but for the third straight race, they lost in round one, this time to R.C. Sherman. Things went much better in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.48/266.35 qualified #5. In the first two rounds, he beat Tony McCallum and low qualifier Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.53 with a 5.48/263.15. In the final, he met newcomer Eric Reed. Reed smoked the tires, and Dunn claimed his first win of the season with a 5.60/264.08. The next event on the schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Mike used a 5.31/280.98 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He lost to Art Hendey in round one. Mike took his second win at the Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.44/272.23 (Top Speed). He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, and in the second round, he got a solo because his competition, Whit Bazemore, was unable to run. Both he and Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, but Mike's 5.83/254 came out on top. In the final, he faced John Martin, but Martin broke, and Dunn's 5.63/268.25 got the victory. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals. Mike qualified #4 with a 5.33/274.97. He beat Martin in the first round. In the second round, both he and Chuck Etchells smoked the tires, and Chuck got the win. Mike and the Joe Pisano team did not run in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were back on tour for the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. Dunn ran 5.44 to qualify #10, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in round one. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.68/255.46 qualified #5 in the thin air. He beat Jim Murphy in round one before losing to Kenny Bernstein's 5.62 with a 5.65 in round two. At Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals, Mike qualified #12 with a 5.59/265.33 but lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. Also ran 5.397 at the 1989 US Nationals. The car was deep PURPLE. The best NHRA National Event times were the 5.281/280.98. Photo from Columbus 1989.
