Notes: Anderson qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.26/260.11. He had problems in the first round against Chuck Etchells and shut off. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.36/294.21 qualified #11. He pulled off a big upset in the first round when both he and John Force smoked their tires. Randy recovered first, and his 5.96/190.83 beat Force's 6.23/222. In round two, he pulled off another upset where his 5.04/308.11 defeated Cruz Pedregon's 5.23/285. I'm sure that put a smile back on Force's face!. In the semi-final, Anderson lost to eventual winner Etchells. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. Randy qualified #5 at 4.96/272.64. Jim Dunn replaced Larry Frazier as tuner. |

Notes: Randy raced at three events in 1999 with great success at the Joliet event. He also may have run the family funny car at some of these. We need to validate. Randy was the third alternate at the Winternationals at 5.730/257.33. He qualified #16 at Phoenix at 5.382/266.69 and lost to John Force in round one, 4.98/301 to 5.123/294.56. He qualified #5 at Joliet (definitely in the Gibbs car) at 4.986/306.53. In round one, he beat ron Capps, 5.014/295.34 to 5.18/282. Randy took out Del Worsham in round two, 4.988/286.07 to 5.39/203. He had a thrilling race with John Force in the semis, but he lost a close 5.003/298 to 5.006/292.84 decision to the champ. That was Randy's last national event of the year. |

Notes: By '78, few teams were using Vega bodies in AA/FC racing, and those that were, were more times than not, underfunded teams. This was one Vega that was feared by other teams. Anderson had the only Vega to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.41/221.67 put him in the dreaded #9 spot forcing him to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme, in the opening round. The "Snake" won their race with a 6.52/221 over Tom's 6.81/202.70. He made it into the final at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and, in the semifinals, Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him and shut off. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and this time Anderson smoked the tires while Pickett ran 6.61/219 for the victory. He was also runner-up to Mike Miller at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. Tom also had the only Vega that made the field for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 6.36/228.45 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. But in the first round, the car got out of shape against John Lombardo, and he shut off to a 7.72/113.06 loss. Anderson got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. A final round 6.25/222.77 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16/237. He was at Edgewater for the next Division 3 race, where he qualified #2 with a 6.43/218.97. A first-round 6.46 beat Murf McKinney's 6.91, but he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Larry Fullerton. Of course, he had the only Vega in the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals, but this Vega was laying down some numbers. His 6.17/230.76 qualified #9 and put him up against Prudhomme for the first round again. Prudhomme's 6.13 won their race, but Anderson's 6.25 in losing was nothing to be ashamed of. Tom did not race at any IHRA races until the Northern Nationals at Milan in July. At Milan, his 6.35 qualified #3. An opening round 6.25/227.27 beat Fullerton's 6.69/211, and a strong 6.12/229.59 in the semifinal beat Dave Settles' 6.17/215 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He faced Denny Savage in the final. Savage had run 6.11 in his semifinal race. But the hoped-for close final never came about as Anderson's wheelie bar broke, causing suspension damage to the Vega and forcing him to shut off. Savage had his own problems, as his on fire 7.28/134 got him the trophy. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. His speed in qualifying was 225.56, but he blew his engine and was replaced by Kenny Bernstein in eliminations. Things didn't go so well back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and all just got one crack at it. Unfortunately, Anderson failed to run quick enough to qualify. He was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 2 race. In the opening round, his 6.40/219.51 defeated Ray Moats' 6.75/215. But he had damaged the engine and couldn't make his semifinal date with eventual winner Billy Meyer. He then went to Baton Rouge for the Division 4 final, where he finally picked up a victory. He was long overdue. At Indy, for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Anderson had the only Vega that qualified for the field. His 6.19/224.59 got him the #13 spot. He ran 6.25/224.43 in the first round of eliminations, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.16/236. |

Notes: At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Anderson ran 6.38/226.70 to qualify #11. He had problems in the first round against Tom Hoover and shut off to 9.83. Tom was the second alternate for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.51/227.27 best. At NHRA Columbus, he hit 6.38 again (speed unavailable) but was the third alternate. In July, the team was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.11 (Low ET), but he smoked the tires in the first round he shut down to a losing 11.90. A 6.34 (speed unavailable) made him the second alternate at Sanair. The team took a massive jump in performance with a 6.088/236.84 #11 qualifying effort at Indy. Unfortunately, Tom lost a close 6.15/236 to 6.185/237.46 decision in round one to Raymond Beadle. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the season. Was he in the Omni by Indy? |

Notes: Tom failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and at the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 6.169/230.76 was good for the second alternate. He also missed the show at NHRA Atlanta, as his 6.197/212 grabbed the third alternate slot. Anderson won the NHRA Eastern Regional on May 17. In the final, he beat Rick Johnson with a 6.50/225.50 to Rick's quicker 6.47/217. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.244/223.32 qualified #12. He drove around a slight Mike Dunn holeshot in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.371 (no speed) to 6.41/224, passing Mike by about 10 feet! In round two, he could not drive around another holeshot, as his 6.325/228.42 lost to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.357/227.84, a margin of about 8 feet! Tom was the second alternate at Englishtown with a 6.217/232.55. He qualified on the bump at Sanair at 6.229/231.36 but lost to Kenny Bernstein in round one, 6.09/243 to a 13-second shutoff. Tom also missed the field at Indy, finishing as the sixth alternate at 6.150/236.22. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Notes: Anderson was the full-time driver for Jim Wemett in 1982. He moonlighted as the interim Custom Body driver in midseason after Bobby Hilton's departure and before Paul Smith's tenure in the car. Anderson qualified the Custom Body #3 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.935 at 245.90 mph and defeated Ken Veney in round one, with a 6.341 to Veney's 6.362. He lost to Gary Burgin in round 2. - David Hapgood | Tom was also driving this car in August when he won the Englishtown Race of Champions event. A quick leaving 6.03 in the final beat Burgin's 5.97. Notes: First funny car in the 5.70s at Indy 1982. This car was painted in Budweiser colors for Indy because Anderson made the first Big Bud Shootout and Bernstein didn't. Photo from the 1982 US Nationals. | Tom qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.04/231.95. He beat Bobby Hilton and Dale Pulde in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.11/234 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" with a 6.29/164.49 in the semifinals. A week later (June 20), the team was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Anderson’s 5.98 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. He beat Billy Meyer and Gary Burgin to reach the final against Pulde. In the final, Tom had traction problems and slowed to a 6.80 loss while Pulde grabbed the victory with a 6.04. The NHRA Grandnationals in Canada was another eight-car show and Tom qualified #7 with a 6.14/233.76. Unfortunately, he lost early in eliminations. |

Notes: Tom set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.880/238.09. He had been driving the other Funny Car drivers nuts during qualifying. Anderson had run a 6.17/206.89 on Thursday, which was only second to Gary Burgin's 6.09/238. Then he came out Friday morning and ran his great 5.88/238. No one else was able to break into the "fives' until Frank Hawley finally ripped off a 5.97/241 late in qualifying. That was the only other car to run a "five" during Pomona's qualifying. He made it into the final by beating Tripp Shumake's 6.15/245 in the first round, with a 5.96/242.58. In the second round, a 6.11/242.58 beat John Force, and in the semifinals, he ran 5.97/236.84 to beat Gary Burgin's 6.18/234. Tom came up against the "Chi-Town Hustler" with Hawley behind the wheel in the final. Anderson ran a 6.02/241.28 that lost to Hawley's 5.93/249. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Anderson had a bad fire during qualifying. The team stripped the car down to the bare chassis and made repairs. He then went out and ran 6.01/240.69 to qualify #14. In round one, he ran a 6.04/239.36 to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.19/209. Burgin had problems and shut off in the second round, and Tom advanced with a 6.00/235.60. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Dale Pulde's tire-smoking 7.95. Atlanta held an eight-car show later in March, and Tom was there. He qualified #3 with a 6.37/177.16 and picked up to a 6.14/226.70 in the first round over Shirl Greer. He lost in the semifinals. A month later (April 17), he was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, it was an eight-car field, and this time he qualified #5 with a 5.94/239.99. He lost to low qualifier John Lombardo in the first round, where he fouled and shut down to 8.95. Things didn't go very well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A best of only 6.39/170.13 failed to qualify for the eight-car show. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Tom qualified #11 with a 6.07/206.89. An opening round 5.97/240.64 stopped Hawley's 6.03/235, but in round two, he slowed to a 6.29/243.24 that lost to Burgin's 6.26/233. Anderson followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 6.04/239.36 qualified #5. The problem is that qualifying fifth in an eight-car show means you had to run the low qualifier in the first round. Prudhomme qualified #1, and the "Snake" defeated him in the opening round. Considering the budget, these guys had compared to everyone else. This team was more than impressive. The NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown was a perfect example. With all the "high-dollar" sponsored cars around them, Tom's 5.91/244.56 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and slowed to a 6.19 in the first round that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.85/249, but the team was able to qualify and run so well against much more heavily funded teams was noticed by all. Anderson went to Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals at the end of July. It was an eight-car field; his 6.14/230.76 qualified #6. He cut a great light in the first round that saw his 6.11/238.72 hold off Ken Veney's quicker 6.08/221. In the semifinal, a 6.16/220.58 beat John Force's 6.40/193. He went up against Hawley in the final. Frank was the only Funny Car here that had run in the "fives." Anderson hoped for the best, but his 6.34/177.51 lost to the "Hustler's" Low ET and Top Speed setting 5.91/244 in the final. Hawley continued to upstage the team at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Tom's 5.91/237.46 qualified second to Frank's 5.86/247. In round one, Paul Smith broke, so Tom made an easy solo. But in round two, his troubled,8.19 lost to Mike Dunn's 6.25 in the "Hawaiian." Tom's best times of the year happened at Indy at 5.829/249.30, and a runner-up to Kenny Bernstein.
