Notes: Tommy Lee, a high school sophomore, was given the reins to drive his brother's dragster in 1957. The "rail job's" engine had four carbs, an H & C mag, big intakes, and high compression heads. It ran on a mixture of alcohol and nitro. It had a quick-change rear end and a Zephyr transmission. It held the Oahu Timing Association record at 125 mph. Notes: Sillerud was the president of the Iowa City Dusters Rod & Custom car club. He generally competed in the gas dragster class, but then put fuel in the tank when it came time for top eliminator runs. Newspapers touted him as the "world's fastest gas-burning dragster." He took top eliminator honors at Cordova on May 11 with a clocking of 10.97 at 126.14 mph in his new dragster. He ran in the Open A Dragster class. The next week at Quad-City, he broke his track record for the second straight week, clocking 10.16 at 128.57 mph on May 18. On May 30 at the Greater Des Moines Drag Strip, he set a new track record for elapsed time with 10.92 at 122.44 mph. He also took top eliminator honors. Before he blew his engine at the June 15 race at Cordova, he took a class win in Open A Dragster with 11.30 at 123.28 mph. At the Belleville Gearjammer car club races at the Walston (Parks) Airport in Cahokia on Aug. 10, Sillerud picked up a $200 U.S. Savings Bond for clocking the top time of the day. Jack Carnie, drove for Sillerud and ran 126.22 mph at 10.90 seconds. He had the misfortune of breaking his axle and crossing the center line during eliminations. On Sep. 21 at Quad-Cities strip, he won top eliminator with a run of 11.02 at 119.84 mph. He also won Cordova's R Class with a run of 11.12 at 126.76 mph. On Oct. 5, he won top eliminator at Cordova and took the Open A Dragster class with a clocking of 11.20 at 120.00 mph. At Cordova on Oct. 19, he won top eliminator with a time of 11.06 at 125 mph. He also won the Open A Dragster class with a clocking of 11.10 at 123.28 mph. Photo: Rock Island Argus, Aug. 25, 1958 -- MB |

Notes: Hunter's unique dragster debuted at Colton on August 3, capturing top eliminator with a speed of 133 mph. At Lions Drag Strip on August 5, he turned 134.35 mph. After pulling up to the starting line, the rear slicks are lifted off the ground by a lever and two oversize casters. He then winds up the engine with the rear wheels spinning, flicking the lever to drop the car when the starter drops the flag. On a run on Aug. 26 at Santa Ana, he drifted to the left as he neared the timing traps. He hit the timing lights while traveling about 130 mph, causing him to flip several times and crash. He had to be cut from the totally demolished car. He suffered a dislocated shoulder, two broken bones in his right hand, and a possible concussion. Notes: Members of the Virginia Wheelers car club, Jamison and McVey, powered their '32 Ford coupe with a 1946 Merc flathead engine with three carbs. Due to the weight of the engine, they eliminated the radiator to reduce the frontal weight. To cool the engine, they put a barrel in the rear to hold and circulate water to the engine. They entered eleven races at Burlington, NC, in 1954, winning eight times and taking runner-up honors three times. At the race on June 6, they took a win in the competition coupe class with a speed of 95 mph. Photo: Roanoke World-News, June 14, 1954 -- MB |

Notes: This was a nice-looking New Visions Corvette. This is a BB/FC owned by Rick Pierce. It was crashed and rebuilt, and this was the new paint job. I was lucky enough to get to drive the car the first three passes after the rebuild and before paint. The car was raced for a while and then sold to Bucky Austin. The car was a show winner taking a best paint award and others. Skidders and Roger Younger did the paint. - Larry Parenteau |
