Notes: Carol won the King of Kings Funny Car Championships at Delmar in April. She ran 6.98 and 6.81 to reach the final, where her 6.83/204.09 beat John Paris' 7.08/210 for the title. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 5, she qualified #7 with a 6.73/208.09. In the first round, opponent Russell Prince broke, and Burkett advanced with a 6.76/203.61. In the semifinals, she fouled against Frank Manzo and shut down to 7.16/187.11. The next Division 1 race was run two weeks later at Cayuga Dragway. Only four cars showed, and Carol's 7.20/194.59 qualified #2 behind Bob Newberry's 6.72/210. She ran 6.95/205.94 to beat John Armstrong's 7.20/197 and met with Newberry in the final. Her off-pace 7.33/187.69 finished runner-up to Bob's 6.79/212. | At the NHRA Budweiser Summernationals at Englishtown (Her only National Event of the season), she qualified #11 with a 6.627/211.56 & ran #3 Qualifier Bob Newberry in Round 1. Unfortunately, Bunny's 6.492/213.27 was a losing effort compared to the eventual runner-up Newberry's 6.430/217.70. At the KMart/Polaroid US All Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown on 9/22/85, Bunny ran John Paris in Round 1. John ran 6.58/208.33 to Bunny's, losing 6.67/211.26. In the consolation round, Bunny ran Leroy Dewdney and defeated him with a 6.57/214.28 to Dewdney's losing 6.87/211.01. | If anyone knows any better numbers for Bunny in 1985, it would be appreciated. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: John was at Englishtown on May 5 for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. A 6.68/209.79 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and a 6.84/205.47 beat John Samolyk. Unfortunately, he broke in the semifinals against eventual winner Bob Newberry. He did not go to the second Division 1 race in Canada, but he was at Maryland International for the third Division 1 race. There, he qualified #3 with a 6.671/207.13. A 6.77/205.94 advanced past Tod Mack, who broke, but in the semifinals, his 6.74/205.01 lost to Newberry's 6.45/217. On September 29, he was at Moroso Motorsports Park for the final NHRA Division Two race. His 6.78/210.77 qualified #3, and he improved to 6.67/208.81 in the opening round to beat John Lukens. In the semifinal, his 6.69/208.81 fell to Terry Mullins' quick-leaving 6.76/184. John was the runner-up to Bunny Burkett at the Delmar King of Kings event with a 7.08/210. At the KMart/Polaroid US All Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown 9/22/85, John ran Bunny Burkett in Round 1 where John ran 6.58/208.33 to Bunny's losing 6.67/211.26. Then, in the consolation round, he raced Tod Mack. Tod ran his best of the day at 6.81/214.28 but lost to John's 6.55/213.52. If anyone knows any better numbers for John in 1985, it would be appreciated. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: Charlie began the year in the Insomnia car, traveling to Pomona for the Winters. He didn't qualify, running 7.740/207.85 to finish as the #15 alternate. He qualified #8 at IHRA Dallas in June in the Dinkins & Moulder car (times unknown). In round one, he ran 6.71/182.55 to beat Joe Haggerty. He did not show up for round two. Charlie's next event was Indy, where he ran 6.682/229.00 to qualify #27 but broke and did not run in the first round. We think that was the Hop 'N' Gator car, however. Charlie qualified #9 and #17 overall for the Eastern team at the Amarillo World Finals (positions based on points standings). He lost to James Warren in round one, 6.550/213 to 6.86/212.26. We need to confirm that the last two events were the Hop N Gator car and not the Insomnia. Some info from Freddie Young. |

Notes: Tommy Ivo's first rear-engined car. By the end of the year, Tommy was the first Top Fuel in the fives at New Alexandria, PA, and the first member of the Cragar 5-Second Top Fuel Club. The record-setting car used a Woody Gilmore 225" chassis. The bodywork was by Tom Hanna. The 1,700 hp engine was a 426 Hemi with a Reath stroker crank that upped the cubes to 473. Keith Black rods and Jahns pistons. Keith Black also did the machining and the head work. Ivo, however, picked Isky for the cam rather than Black's preference for Engle. A Larry Bowers prepared GMC 6/71 sat on a Cragar manifold, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. An Enderle injection unit sat up top. The engine burned between 76 to 95% nitro. The power was transmitted through a Lenco two-speed overdrive transmission. Ivo varied the rear-end gear ratios from 4.88, 5.13, and 5.38. Bill Carter did the paint. Tom qualified #32 at the Pomona Winters at 6.906/222.22. He upset Jim Paoli in round one, 6.84/223.32 to 6.86/217.39. Tom lost on a holeshot to Ken McLean in round two, 6.91/182.92 to Tom's 6.86/196.93. Tom won IHRA Dallas in June. He qualified #2 (times unknown). He ran 6.56/216.86 to defeat Jack Mitchell's 6.64/201.34 in round one. In the second round, Tommy singled when Skipper Harder broke on the burnout. In the semis, he won a squeaker over Larry LaDue in the Jackie Peebles machine, 6.53/231.36 to 6.54/227.85. In the final, Tommy won another close one over Carl Olson, 6.25/237.46 to 6.26/233.16. At Indy, Tom qualified #14 at 6.421/222.22. He best Sid Seeley in round one, 6.355/221.67 to a ten-second shutoff, but fouled away a 6.824/228.42 to Chuck Kurzawa's winning 7.355/126.93 in round two. Indy was Tommy's last NHRA national event of the year. At Keystone, Tommy ran 6.03/225, 6.25/227 (smoking the tires), and 5.97/230 to win the match over Bob Starr and run the sport's first 'five.' Starr ran 6.82/212 in the first and third rounds. We need the official third digit on the 5.97 if anyone has it. In the photo, John Tarzan Austin, with the hat, is standing behind the wing, and Ivo is packing the chute. |

Notes: The team ran this car early in 1972 before bringing out their Ed Mabry-built rear-engine car. Early in the year, Steve qualified #9 for NHRA Gainesville with a front-engine machine at 6.610/217.91. He lost to Garlits in round one, 6.25/211 to 6.658/211.26. Steve qualified #15 at IHRA Dallas in June and ran 6.82/200.89 in a loss to Mike Tarter's 6.67/216.34 in round one. We are not sure if that was in this FED or in the new rear-engine car. |

Notes: Vic ran 6.452/218.97 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge. He qualified #12 at the Ontario Supernationals at 6.252/216.86. In round one, he beat Dennis Baca, 6.64/197.36 to 7.29/190.07. In round two, his excellent 6.040/225.56 defeated a Pat Dakin shutoff. In the semis, he ran 6.034/231.95 to defeat the NHRA's first five-second run on a holeshot. Mike Snively's 5.974/235.69 trailed through the lights on the quickest side-by-side race in history. In the final, Brown fouled away a 6.49/192.30, giving him the best view of Don Moody's unreal 5.91/231.95 all-time best for the win. Some info from Freddie Young. |
