Notes: Pete was the third alternate at NHRA Gainesville at 6.83/209.30. That was the team's only NHRA national event. He qualified third with a 6.85 in the eight-car field at the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington on March 20. He lasted until the semis when eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.62/216 beat his off-pace 7.48/146.81. He also qualified for the IHRA Springnationals in Bristol on June 19. Johnny White beat him in the first round. In Aug, he won the NHRA Points race in Baton Rouge. A first-round 6.83 beat a tire-smoking Larry Brown, and a semifinal 6.86 beat Dennis Piranio's 7.45. In the final, a 6.96/202 beat Gordon Mineo's 7.05. At the PRO National Challenge race at Union Grove on September 11, he beat John Pott in round one, and he broke while running a 6.69/179 over Frank Oglesby's 6.71/206. He could not fix the car for the semifinal, so Oglesby was reinstated. Pete also ran 6.73 at Warner Robins.

Notes: Miner was at Warner Robins on March 31 for the NHRA Division Two opener. The Funny Car field was weak, as only four cars showed. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.98/201.35 lost to eventual winner Harry Hudson's 6.84/208. Pete was at the Lakeland National Open in May. He made it to the final against Shirl Greer, but his 7.00/199.55 lost to Greer's 6.76/190. Also ran 7.22 at Gainesville, 6.98 at Warner Robins WCS 74.

Notes: This was the former "Super Duster." In February, Miner started his '73 season at Warner Robins for an eight-car show that saw only three cars compete. His 7.72 lost to Harry Hudson's 7.45 in the SOHC-powered "Super Ford" in his first race. He then made one easy solo pass. Later in the month, he was at Miami-Hollywood's Winter Funny Car Championships. This was another eight-car field, and all the cars showed this time. But Pete's 7.51/186.33 in the opening round lost to Al Hanna's 7.06/198 in the "Eastern Raider." He was back in Miami early in March for a best-of-three match race against Shirl Greer. In their first race, Greer lost power and coasted through while Pete ran 7.08/202.24 for the win. Greer got out of shape in their second race and lost to Pete's 7.27/190. He made yet another trip to Miami later in March for a twelve-car show. Pete qualified #9 with a 7.40/193.54. In the first round, he got out of shape and shut down against Al Marshall, who advanced Dale Creasy's Mustang with a 6.76/212. Miner was at LaPlace Dragway on April 1 for the NHRA Division Four opener. His 7.86/182 advanced over a broken Gary Henderson in the new "Super Duster," but in the semifinal, it was the "Gold Coast Duster" that broke against Paul Smith in the "Sir Wells" Charger. Shortly after, he was at Phenix City for the NHRA Division Two opener. In the opening round, Billy Grooms crossed the centerline while racing him, and Miner's 7.73/189.47 advanced. In the semifinal, his 7.54/187.89 was defeated by eventual winner Preston Davis' 7.34/196. On May 20, he competed at the Warner Robins National Open. His 7.33/192 in the opening round beat Dee Simmons, but in the semifinals, Smith's 7.00/205 defeated his 7.22/200.00. Pete was at Blaney Drag Strip in June for the third NHRA Division Two race. He soloed in round one, with a 13.63/62.63, and in the semifinals, his 7.25/201.34 beat Hudson's off-pace 8.08/172. Unfortunately, he lost to Shirl Greer in the final. The Atlanta Invitational featured a fourteen-car field. Miner's 7.63 in the first round beat Sid Foster's 8.97 in the "King Cobra," but the race was halted for rain. In July, Miner was back at Warner Robins for an eight-car show. He qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Cliff Brown. Miner got out of shape in their race and lost to Brown's track record, 6.64/227. The team qualified #16 for the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo, but their 7.77/141.28 lost to Don Cain in round one.

Notes: Austin kicked off his NHRA campaign at Gainesville, where he was the second alternate at 6.296 (speed not reported). He lost a close first round to Marvin Schwartz at IHRA Bristol in June, 6.45/220.58 to 6.49/209.80. The team's next NHRA national event was Englishtown, where Austin qualified on the bump at 6.305/200.44. He could not make the first round, so first alternate Schwartz took his place against Jim Bucher. The team qualified #14 at Indy at 6.069/231.36. A consistent 6.082/226.13 beat Herm Petersen's 6.286/221.67 in round one, and another 6.087-219.51 held off Marvin Graham's 6.092/233.16 in round two. Don Garlits ended Austin's day in round three, 5.886/226.70 to a 10-second shutoff. That was the team's last NHRA national event. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Notes: Scott won the IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with a best of 8.90 at 150.25. Went through eliminations with a cracked block. He defeated Phil Nichols, Wayne Gapp, Lee Edwards, and finally Larry Huff in the final with an 8.99/150.25. Scott ran 8.94 at NHRA Englishtown 1975. He was runner-up to a Don Nicholson holeshot at IHRA Union Grove, 9.01/149.00 to Scott's 8.98/150.50. Runner up at Maryland International Raceway US Pro Stock Open 7/75. | Scott Shafiroff made a huge leap from running a strong Chevy Pro Stock Vega in '74 to switching to this Ford Mustang II for '75. After the season he had, it seemed like he made the right choice. Right off the bat, the car was a contender. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 9.00/151.51. An opening round 9.01/150 beat Kenny Hahn's Duster at 9.18/148, but he lost to Bill Jenkins in round two. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he picked up even more on the pack running an 8.90 to qualify #5. But Shafiroff attempted to run an even better number to move up the chart, but the rear end tore out from the car while making his burnout. First alternate Bobby Yowell took his place in the field. After getting the car repaired, Scott ran the Mustang II, which was 50 lbs lighter than NHRA's weight, and ran an impressive 8.70. Scott was anxious to get back into competition. In April, he was at Cecil County's National Open where the car set both Low ET and Top Speed, but broke before eliminations. Things finally clicked his way at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. There, he won with a final round of 8.88/153.06. Shafiroff did a lot of match racing with the car and was very successful with it. At the NHRA Springnationals, 34 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Scott's 9.02/151.26 qualified #5. He was late off the line in the first round, and his 9.11/147.29 lost to Warren Johnson's 9.18/148. Shortly after, he won over an eight-car field at Empire Dragway in New York. He set Low ET in the final with a 9.02 over Ronnie Manchester's 9.19. His biggest win of the year came at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He ran 8.98, 8.99, and 8.99 over a fouling Lee Edwards in the semifinals to reach the final against Larry Huff. Larry knew that Scott was running with a wounded motor, but he also saw that he was still running a tenth faster than his Dodge. So, Huff took a chance on the 'tree and fouled while Scott ran yet another 8.99 at 150 for his first IHRA national event win. He also made it two in a row in IHRA competition when he reached the final at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove, but his final round 9.01 finished runner-up to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.98 in an all-Ford final. The car kept improving at the NHRA national events, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Shafiroff's 8.94/153.58 was now up to #3 on the qualifying list. His speed was also tops among the qualifiers. Scott looked strong in eliminations. An opening round 8.96/153.84 advanced when Sam Gianino fouled, and in round two, he beat Charlie Castaldo with an 8.95/154.63. He went up against Jenkins in the semifinals, and the car let him down, breaking on the pass and slowing to a 10.14/99.55 loss against Jenkins' 8.94/152. His next stop was at the US Pro Stock Open held at Budds Creek. Once again, the Mustang II was flying. He ran 8.96, 8.93, and 8.99 in the semifinals over a fouling Richie Zul. His final-round opponent was Roy Hill in his Duster. Roy had not been running quite as well as Scott had, hitting a best of 8.98 in eliminations, but a final round 8.97/151 beat Scott's 8.99/150.25 for the win. Notes: We also have a confirmed 8.59 in Unlimited trim. This Mustang II was new in 1975 and ran as a legal NHRA Pro Stock during that year. During 1976, Scott ran this car mostly in match race trim and as a legal C/A at NHRA national events. This photo from the 1976 NHRA Springnationals shows the car running as a C/A in Competition Eliminator.

Notes: Denny's first time driving the Chi-Town car came on March 2 at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Runner up to Gene Snow at IHRA Bristol June 1975 (6.46/224.43 bests). His 6.33/230.17 lost to Prudhomme in the semis at the PHR 131 race. Denny qualified #14 at 6.358/226.13 at Ontario, the team's only NHRA event. He beat Dave Condit in round one when Dave lost fire, hitting 6.452/199.11. Norm Wilcox did not show in round two, and Denny got a 6.660/184.80 bye run. Austin Coil really turned up the wick in the semis, and Denny ran a season-best 6.210/231.36 to defeat John Lombardo's decent 6.344/225.00. Prudhomme could not back up his amazing 5.987/241.53 numbers, but a 6.158/240.64 made Denny's 6.937/155.44 a runner-up in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Gene Snow). Notes: Gene raced at the Irwindale Grand Premiere and hit 6.67/205.94. He was out for most of the first six months of 1975 after back surgery but returned in June 1975 to win at IHRA Bristol with a best of 6.36/223.88, defeating Denny Savage in the Chi-Town Hustler in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Denny Savage). | Gene was at Edmonton International on July 30 for its Funny Car Spectacular race. There were 24 cars present. All were to run three rounds of racing, with the winner being determined by wins. In Snow's first race, his 6.54/194 beat a badly out-of-shape Bill Spevacek. In his second race, he beat Ken McLean with a 6.39/215. His third race didn't go as planned as Raymond Beadle got out of shape and crossed the centerline, sideswiping Gene's Vega. Shortly after, he was in Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was a big 32-car show. Snow's 7.09/149 in the opening round of eliminations beat Bryan Raines' 7.14/194. But in the second round, his 6.53 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.38.

Notes: Gary Beck debuted Larry Minor's new Swindahl-built car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On the opening day of qualifying (Thursday), while everyone else was having trouble just trying to run a "five," Gary came out and ran 5.69. On Saturday, he picked it up to a 5.52/251.39, far ahead of #2 qualifier Jody Smart, who was in with a 5.77. Beck's had now qualified #1 for the fifth straight NHRA national event. He almost lost in the opening round, where the car broke a rear end and coasted through with a 19-second time, but his opponent, Richard Tharp, driving for Kilpatrick and Connell, fouled against him. Rain interfered, and the second round wasn't run until a week later. In that round, he ran 5.60 to beat Jim Barnard's 5.88. But in the semifinals, Beck faced Shirley Muldowney, and while she was streaking to a 5.68 to advance, Gary was filling the area with tire smoke as he overpowered the track. Everything went more according to plan at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, Beck qualified #1, this time with a 5.54/242.90. The spread to the #2 qualifier wasn't as large as at Pomona, as Shirley's 5.57/252 qualified #2. Beck opened with a 5.74/241.28 over Chris Karamesines' 5.91/241, and a strong 5.49/252.80 in round two took out Tharp's 5.63/252. In the semifinals, he faced his boss Minor, who, in round two, had opened some eyes with a 5.51. But Minor lost a blower belt while Gary ran a new NHRA record 5.44 at 252.10 to advance into the final. There, he faced Connie Kalitta, and the "Bounty Hunter" went into hard tire shake and shut off while Beck ran another 5.49 at 251.39 for the victory. The team's next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 5.55/245.90 for the pole. He streaked to 5.42 (Low ET) at 252 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Minor. His 5.56/246 beat Kalitta's 5.73/241 in the semifinals. He went up against Tharp in the final, and Richard had lane choice as he had won his semifinal race with a 5.54. But it seemed like Beck's crew chief, Bernie Fedderly, could make the car run just about any number he wanted. Beck ran 5.53/249 in the final to pick up another victory over Tharp's 5.70/245.World Champ 1983. Ran 5.391/252.10 at Fremont (first in the 5.3s), then duplicated the feat at the World Finals. Gary went 5.448 National Record at Gainesville to provide early season thrills. Photo from 1983 Cajun Nationals.

Notes: Gary qualified at Pomona Winters at 5.976/242.58. We need to confirm that this is the car that ran at the Summers (247) and not the silver car. Beck started his '78 season by running a 6.26 to qualify #3 at the AHRA Winternationals. Against Jim Plummer, the car got out of shape and crossed the centerline in the first round. He then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the abovementioned times qualified Gary #7 in the field. A first-round 6.18/221 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.09/230. Great 5.855 ET at Columbus and 247.25 at Englishtown, but Gary dominated Ontario before breaking in the final. He ran amazing 5.763/250.00 numbers there in qualifying. We are listing these times here, but they may apply to the other 1978 entry for Gary. That shows blank times for now, but adjust when we get confirmation of which car ran which event. Gary became the 5th member of the NHRA 250 MPH club with that pass.
