Notes: On April 20, he had the only fuel FC that showed up at DeSoto Memorial Raceway for the second NHRA Division Two race. He made a 14.25/53.50 solo to win. At the 1980 AHRA GrandNats, Dragway 42, Don was an alternate for this 8-car show, but rain delays sent many teams home, including Tom McEwen. McEwen qualified 5th and was replaced by Nieves' Charger. He faced No. 1 qualifier Dale Pulde in round one and lost. Rick Howard photo (frame-grabbed from Super 8mm film) from that event.

Notes: Won Division 2 in 1972. Ran a 6.16 at Lions in 2/72 and was the quickest in the sport at the time, beating Don Garlits' 6.21. Of course, the Top Fuel cars hit the fives by the end of the year. Number one qualifier at Indy at 6.138/229.00. This was Jack McKay's new rear-engine car, not Clayton's Moon Burst Front engine dragster. Also ran 6.13 in the first round of the 1972 Supernationals. Clayton ran 6.25 at Suffolk 4/72 and 6.15 at Lions 7/72. Low qualifier at Lions Grand Premiere at 6.15 and Summernationals at 6.20. The 6.25 was a National Record but was retired on 5/01/72 due to a rule change. Ran 6.130 at Ontario Supernationals 72, 6.62 at Pomona, 6.21 at Gainesville, 6.55 at Columbus, 6.20 at Englishtown, 6.13 at Indy, 6.13 at Ontario. Won Phenix City WCS race 6.58/209.30. Harris was runner-up at the NHRA Amarillo World Finals with a 6.215.

Notes: Dale attempted to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.38/225.56 was good for the third alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.299/231.95 qualified #4. He beat Don Powell in round one with a 6.41/192.71 to a 15-second shutoff. He ran 6.433/206.42 in round two to beat Carl Olson's 8.87/97 shutoff. In the semifinals, his throttle cable broke, and he lost to eventual winner Dave Settles, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. Dale set new IHRA records of 6.04/238.72 at Bristol Springs. He was the third qualifier at the Summernationals with a 6.224/234.37. He went on to win that race with times of 6.52/221, 6.32/230, 6.23/233, and a final round 6.31/229 in a bit of revenge against Dave Settles. Dale qualified #3 at Indy at 6.076/237.46 and made it to the semis. He ran 6.45/167 against Gary Bekc in round one. In round two, he got a holeshot win over Bob Noice, 6.15/234 to 6.11/224. He easily bet John Weibe's shutoff in round three with a 6.43/219. In the semis, it was Dale who fell to a holeshot as Gaines Markley took a 6.180/236.22 to 6.178/233.16 win. We need to confirm the 5.99/239.36 numbers. Newspaper reports alternated Dale Funk's hometown as either Radcliff or Valley Station. Photo from Indy 1974.

Notes: Clayton began his NHRA national event season at Columbus, qualifying #4 at 6.094/239.36 (top speed). He improved to 6.052/239.36 to beat Dale Funk's 7.313/143.34 in round one. He continued his tear in round two with a 6.062/227.27 decision over Dave Settles' respectable 6.211/231.95. Clayton fell off to a 6.353-225.00 in the semis, enough for Marvin Graham to slip by at 6.307-221.18. Clayton qualified #4 again at the Summernationals with a 6.156-231.95. However, Dale Funk returned the first-round favor with a 6.376/236.84 to 6.427/229.59 decision. At IHRA Bristol in June, Clayton beat the Edwards Bros.' 6.51/223.32 in round one with a 6.31/222.22. He improved to 6.29/221.13 in round two to beat Charlie Moulder's 6.65/181.08. Clayton smoked the tires against Don Garlits in the semis and shut off against Don's 6.18/230.76. He had a rough outing at Indy with a 6.460-184.04 #14 alternate effort. That was the team's last NHRA event of the year. Some wire reports cited Clayton's hometown at Columbia, MS, this year (82 miles southwest of Haleyville). Photo from 1974 IRP WCS D3.

Notes: Two different cars were run by this team in 1975. Bill Stebbins of S&S Engineering, Louisville, Kentucky, built both cars. Both cars had detachable rear sections behind the roll cage. The 1975 NHRA Gatornationals winning car was actually a revamped 254" version of the team's original back motored car built in 1971. This car was run while the team's successful 1974 version was at the Stebbins shop awaiting repairs. After those repairs were made, the newer 225" car was put into service mid-year. We think that was at the PHR race in August. If we find that it was earlier, we need to make appropriate adjustments. Dale qualified #5 at the Pomona Winters at 6.017/238.09. He broke in round one, sending Rick Ramsey to a 6.161/213.77 victory. In Gainesville, Dale qualified #10 at 6.213/229.59. He beat Ted Wolf in round one, 6.260/220.04 to 6.376/233.16. In round two, Dale beat John Wiebe, 6.200/218.44 to an off-pace 9.82/82.94. Marvin Graham could not start his car in the semis, sending Dale on to a 6.250/220/04 broke bye. In the final, Dale again outlasted a troubled opponent. While Tom Toler stumbled to a 9.242/92.87, Dale took advantage and won with a 7.605/136.12. At Columbus, Dale qualified #12 at 6.185/230.17. He lost to Clayton Harris in round one, 6.052/239.36, to an off-pace 7.313/143.34. The team qualified well at IHRA Bristol (times unknown) but suffered an upset first-round loss to Charles Moulder, 6.21/226.70 to 6.50/190.67. Dale qualified #12 at Englishtown, this time at 6.264/234.37. He got first-round revenge on Clayton Harris with a 6.376/236.84 to 6.427/229.59 decision. Jim Bucher's Chevy ended his day in round two, however, 6.816/128.44 to 7.042/200.89. The team brought out the refurbished car after this. See that other entry. The team won the 1975 IHRA Top Fuel world championship. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: This is the second car that the team ran in 1975. They won the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals with their 1971 Bill Stebbins chassis while the car pictured (1974 Stebbins) was being repaired. We think the car came out in August, and Dale ran a 5.88 at the Popular Hot Rodding event in Martin, Michigan. Dale was the #10 qualifier at Indy at 6.042/237.46. He beat Tom Kaiser in round one, 6.056/230.17 to 12.988/51.99. In round two, Dale was one-half of the quickest side-by-side pass in history, with Don Garlits taking a 5.919/236.22 to 5.976/238.72 decision. Dale qualified #5 at Seattle at 6.057/239.36. He fell off to a 6.585/198.13 in round one, losing to Jerry Ruth's 6.121/226.70. Dale ran a great 5.829/242.58 to qualify #4 at the World Finals. He beat Jim Bucher in round one, 7.283/124.58 to an even more troubled 8.234/88.58. Don Garlits ended Dale's day in round two on a squeaker similar to Indy, 5.858/249.30 to 5.898/239.90. Notes: Funk drove the "Kentucky Moonshiner" in 1975. Where did he drive Clayton's car? We are assuming this was after Clayton's leg was broken in a Sanair qualifying incident with Charlie Moulder.

Notes: Dale drove Richard Holcomb's "No Name Special" at Charlotte Speedway on March 31 for the IHRA Southern Nationals. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Funk went on to win. A 4.27/167 beat Billy Campbell in the "Golddigger" in round one. In the semifinals, he beat the low qualifier, Jim Bucher, with a 5.65. This set up a final round meeting with Pat Dakin driving G.L. Rupp's Donovan-powered car. Dale got a good leave and held on to win the event. | Bill, the clocks failed in the FC and TF finals, so there are no numbers. Very few results came out of the event because the Dave Anderson incident took up all the ink. Jim Bucher was low in TF at 4.39/176.12 and ran Low ET in E1 at 4.18/175. - Bret Kepner | Dale remembers a 4.00/180 from this year. We need validation of that.

Notes: Charlie failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The damp track had an easy 7-second "bump," but Moulder went up in smoke on every qualifying attempt. Charlie ran a booming 6.304/240.64 first alternate pass at NHRA Gainesville. He was the sixth alternate at Englishtown (times not reported but not quicker than 6.32). On July 29, Charlie was at Miami-Hollywood for the fourth NHRA Division 2 race. He set Top Speed at 226.13 and reached the final against Clayton Harris. Harris was running a lot better than Moulder, so Charlie took a shot and fouled away a 6.44/201.34, while Harris got the victory with a 6.25/218. At Sanair, not only did he not make the show, but he ran into Harris in qualifying, breaking Clayton's leg and putting him out of the show despite a 6.35 qualifier. Flip Schofield took Clayton's spot in the show. Charlie ran 6.37 at Bowling Green and was the eighth alternate at Indy with a 6.320/230.17 #8 alternate effort. Charlie also ran 6.34 at Edgewater. Where was the 6.25/241.93 run? Photo from 1973 US Nationals.

Notes: Charlie ran 6.682/229.00 to qualify #27 at Indy, but he broke and did not run in the first round. He qualified #9 for the Eastern team and #17 overall at the Amarillo World Finals (positions based on points standings). He lost to James Warren in round one, 6.550/213 to 6.86/212.26. Charlie also ran 6.69 at Warner Robins. Some info from Freddie Young. We need to validate that these runs were in the Hop N Gator and not the Insomnia car in which Charlie started the season.

Notes: Naramore bought out Hurst in late 1974, beginning a partnership that would last the rest of Pryor's career. Longtime crewmember Tuck Jones worked that winter at Jerry Dawson's shop in St. Louis to help build the team a new chassis for an unforgettable 1975 season that culminated with the Division 3 championship; they finished ahead of Dick Rosberg, Dave Settles, Jim Bucher, and others. - Phil Burgess, Dragster Insider, 9/30/08 | The team debuted at Columbus with a second alternate 6.251/226.70 effort. They then ran what looks like a 6.72 at 181.81 in a first-round loss to Ted Wolf's 6.22/235 at IHRA Bristol later in June. Bill qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.298/227.84. He surprised John Austin in round one, 6.439/229.00 to 6.452/231.95, and beat Pat Dakin in round two, 6.389/221.13 to 7.356/145.16. Gary Beck put Bill out of the program in the semis, 6.159/229.00 to 7.422/130.24. The team improved their qualifying position in Montreal with a 6.207/217.39, claiming the #4 slot. However, Paul Longenecker upset Bill in round one with a 7.70/199.11 to 8.07/148.02 effort. The team qualified #20 at Indy with a 6.099/233.71 but lost in round one to Hank Johnson, 5.900/236.84 to 6.278/220.58. That was their last NHRA national event of the year. | Bill was at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.35/214.28. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Walt Barbin. Unfortunately for Barbin, he failed to fire, and Pryor eased into the semifinals with a 6.69. There, he had a close race against the eventual winner, John Wiebe. Bill's 6.39/215.31 lost to Wiebe's 6.37/228. The team had an exciting time at St. Louis on June 1 for the AHRA Springnationals. Pryor had run 6.47/206.43 to qualify but returned to improve his time. The car got out of shape, and Bill tried to save it. He almost did, and in a last-ditch effort, he turned the wheel sharply, but the back of the dragster hit the guardrail. The rear end and transmission were destroyed, and the chassis was damaged. The car was still qualified #5 from the earlier run, so the team loaded it up and took it to the original chassis builder, Dawson. Some tubing was replaced, and a new rear end and transmission were installed. They won the first-round match at St. Louis with a 6.34/214.29. A semifinal 6.38/227.28 beat a tire-smoking Wiebe. That put Pryor into the final against Frank Bradley. A final round 6.50/220.59 got the team the victory. Won Division 3 in 1975, 1976, and 1979. Did the team go 5.97/245.90 this year? We formerly listed that and need to confirm.

Notes: In March, Ted ran 6.084/239.36 (Top Speed) to qualify #2 at the NHRA Gatornationals. A first-round 6.372/233.16 lost to Dale Funk's 6.260/220.04. The team then traveled to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. They qualified #7 in the eight-car show, but a first-round 6.32 lost to Don Garlits' 6.21. Ted still managed to get Top Speed honors with a 230.17. At the IHRA Pro Am Nationals at Rockingham, Ted lost in the first round when his 6.77 fell to Marvin Schwartz, who ran a slower 6.80. He won the NHRA Division 2 race at Suffolk in May, running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.11/231 in the final over Clayton Harris at 6.27/196. Another win came at Maple Grove for the fifth annual Dutch Classic. Ted qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.28/210.77. He beat Charlie Greer's 6.39/225 in the first round with a 6.35/209.79. In the semifinal, he ran an easy 7.28/167.59 for the win when Roger Toth got out of shape and crossed the center line. In the final, Wolf won with a 6.73/225.56 (Top Speed) when Hank Endres smoked the tires against him. On June 8, the team was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Wolf just made the show with a 6.213/222.77 for the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 6.282/227.34 failed to get around Dave Settles' 6.163/229.59. rnAt Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals in June, a 6.31 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show. Ted won his first-round match with a 6.22/235 over Bill Pryor at 6.72/181.81. Unfortunately, they were shut off on the line in round two with an oil leak. Ted got a runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 3 race in Cincinnati, Ohio, losing to Garlits' 6.08/238 in the final with a 6.32/227.84. At the NHRA Summernatioals, Ted qualified #14 at 6.297/234.98. He could not make the first round, and Dave Settles filled in against Grant Stoms. The team had a great outing at NHRA Indy, qualifying #8 at 6.030/241.93 and then making it to the semifinals of the 32-car field with a string of fives. In round one, Ted beat Frank Bradley on a holeshot, 5.975/243.24 to 5.961/242.58. It was the quickest and fastest side-by-side race in history. In round two, Ted ran a booming 5.912/245.90 to stop Jim Herbert at 6.125/242.58 (which likely reset the fastest side-by-side speed record). Ted beat Hank Johnson in round three, 6.106/241.93 to 6.224/243.24. Don Garlits ended Ted's day in the semis, 5.892/236.94 to 6.200/238.72. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.
