Notes: Smith was driving for Dunlap for the first time in Jan at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.11/248.61, but his blower exploded in the lights in the first round. The car caught fire and destroyed the Tempo body, but Paul was OK. He had run 6.23/216.86 and won his race with Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian." The team made repairs and made it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.951/244.69 qualified #13. Unfortunately, he lost to Ed McCulloch in the opening round, 5.94/249 to 8.06/104. Smith was at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show early in March. In the first round, his 6.16/238.72 lost to Gary Cochran's 6.11/226. A week later (March 10), he won over an eight-car field at Atlanta Dragway. He qualified #3 with a 5.86/247.93. Tom Hoover smoked the tires and shut off against him in round one, and Smith advanced with a 6.45/188.67. Rick Johnson, driving the "Hawaiian," also overpowered the track in the semifinal, and Paul won with an easy 6.36/220.58. In the final, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" car. For the third time, his competition smoked the tires against him. Paul's 6.01/240.64 got the victory over Mark's tire frying 9.09/94. Things didn't go so well for the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville. Twenty-two cars had been shown, and Paul was the second alternate at 5.996/232.07. By April, he was driving the "Custom Body" car. | Paul Smith went to drive the Castronovo car in the Spring of '85. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Motry ran the Byron Dragway Coors Manufacturers Funny Car Showdown in the Unlimited Funny Car race with Nitro Alcohol & Jet Funny Cars, where he faced Al Hanna's Eastern Raider Jet in round 1 & Motry's was violently out of shape & his 8.76/110.76 was no match for Hanna's 6.93/225.00. Motry would run Fill Smith's Flashback Jet FC in his final run, where Motry "improved" with a 7.14/195.65 the hard way when he was again out of shape & killed the engine while Smith blasted away with a 6.58/240.64. Notes: Giavia ran the Sacramento Winter Classic 2/85 4 Nitro Funny Car Show where he ran 6.29/219.58 against Eventual runner Up John Force's 5.69/247.94. Then he attempted to qualify for the Fuel & Gas Championships in Bakersfield but was outside the Quick 8 as the 2nd Alternate. In September, Giavia returned to Sacramento for the Governor's Cup, where he ran Wayne Minick in round 1 where Giavia would win with a 6.18/229.01 to Minick's shut off early 6.17/204.09, but in that run, Giavia blew the engine. 1 Week later, Giavia went to Baylands for the Golden Gates Drags 4 Funny Car Show. In round 1, Giavia ran Don Prudhomme, where Giavia put up a 6.13/222.77 losing effort to the Eventual winner Prudhomme's 5.91/226.70. In round 2, Giavia would run Rick Johnson's Hawaiian Punch Dodge, where Giavia ran another 6-teen with a 6.15/230.17 losing effort to the eventual Runner Up Johnson's 5.96/246.57. Notes: Menoes ran the NHRA WWCS at Phoenix to start the year & qualified on the bump of the eight-car field with a 9.393/162.74. He would run #4 Qualifier Bob Turner in round 1, where Menoes would win with a 9.40/162.16 to Turner's Problem ridden 12.34/98.57. Menoes would draw #2 Qualifier Chris Christensen, but Menoes would break before the burnout & the eventual Runner-up, Christensen, got the solo to the final. If anyone knows if Jim ran any other events in 1985, please let us know. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: Former Ken Mott, Frank Huff Vega. | I was sitting on the tailgate (leaning against the shop, to the right) when a Super Stocker's throttle hung open and rammed our funny car & crew cab (in the staging lanes at Dragway 42). We added a new 1974 Vega front end after that. Sikora did the repair. - Phil Sebring, March 2024 |
