Notes: Machacek had raced in Pro Stock since the early '80s. He had really been competitive in the late '90s. Then things picked up for him. He started the '97 season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He showed that the car was more than capable of running with the leaders by qualifying #3. A 6.72 easily advanced past the first round, and in round two, he beat Ron Miller. He took out Tim Nabors in the semi-final with a 6.78/203.94. This was Ed's second IHRA final-round appearance. He faced Richie Stevens in the final, and Ed had the advantage based on performance. Stevens' semi-final win came at 6.81, so Machacek also had lane choice for the final. But Ed ran his slowest pass of the day while Stevens ran his quickest, and the Ford driver's 6.79 got the win over Ed's 6.82. Ed qualified #14 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.88/202.73. Another 6.88 at 200.92 in the first round lost to Tony Gillig's identical 6.88/202. Shortly after, he was at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. He qualified #13 at 6.84/203.66. But he slowed to 6.95/200.02 in the opening round and lost to John Konigshofer's 6.85/203. He was at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in the first week of July. His 6.89/200.71 qualified #14. In the first round, he and his opponent, Pete Berner, had run 6.90 (Ed at 201.16), but the win light came on in Berner's lane. He also qualified #14 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.85/202.65. The first round continued to give him a hard time, and his 6.86/201.70 lost to John Montecalvo's 6.87/202. Despite these first-round losses, he was still in ninth in IHRA points. Bristol was the next stop on the IHRA schedule for the Autumn Nationals. Ed qualified #13 at 6.88/201.97. That was still pretty good, as people thought the NHRA fields were tough; IHRA was pretty stout, too. His time was better than Nabors, Doug Kirk, and Steve Williford, among others. In round one, he upset Angelo Alesci's 6.87/202 with a quick-leaving 6.89/201.82. In round two, he continued to impress as both he and Montecalvo had run 6.93 (Ed at 201.04), but Machacek got the win. His ride ended in the semi-final, where low qualifier and eventual winner Tony Gillig's 6.85/202 beat his 6.92/201.01. He moved up to eighth in the points. Norwalk had been postponed due to rain, and the IHRA World Nationals were not run until mid-September. It took a 6.77 to make the show, and Ed just got in with his 6.77/204.26, qualifying #15. Once again, he had a close race where both drivers ran the same time. In the first round, he and David Jenkins both ran 6.79 (Machacek at 203.75), but he lost this one.

Notes: Tharp was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, driving for Bob Creitz. Dave Babler fouled against him in the first round, and Tharp advanced with a 7.88. In the second round, it was Tharp who fouled, wasting a 6.86 against Dave Chenevert. The team failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Richard qualified for the third OCIR All-Pro race but had problems in the opening round and shut off early against eventual winner Gary Cochran. The team did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing to run at Lions instead for the second AHRA Grand American race. Both events were run on March 8. It turned out to be a wise move. Tharp won his opening round race with a 6.62 and then made two easy passes, an "odd-lot" solo in round two, and he shut off early in the semifinals when Jimmy King fouled against him. This famous race had Don Garlits' two-speed transmission explode in the final and rip the dragster in half. That explosion happened while racing Tharp in the final. Richard took the victory with a 6.65/223, but few noticed as everyone was looking at the remains of Garlits' car and hoping that he was alright. He lost half his foot, but otherwise, he was ok. Meanwhile, Tharp went to Dallas International the following weekend(March 15) for a best-of-three-match race against Bennie Osborn. Richard won the first two rounds to sew up the match with times of 7.08/200.44 and 7.01/205.94. They still decided to have a third race, and this time, Tharp fouled away a 6.79/217.91. In April, he was at LaPlace for its Spring Drag Festival. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.92 qualified #5. He faced a low qualifier, Chip Woodall, in the first round, and both ended up smoking the tires. Woodall recovered first, and his 7.15/169 beat Tharp's 7.83/132.54. It was then off to Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Duane Ong fouled against him in the first round, but Tharp lost in round two. On May 17, the team was at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. The Creitz and Donovan team was one of the eight "seeded" cars on tour, and Tharp's 7.09 qualified #4 among this group. An opening round 7.08/209.79 beat Bob Bofysil's 7.34, but in the second round, his 7.04/216.86 lost to King's 6.97/217. Another win came at Bristol on June 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. Tharp beat Jim Harnsberger in the first round with a 6.90. A second-round 7.07/212.76 stopped a tire-smoking, Chris Karamesines, and he got an easy solo in the semifinal when Jim Nicoll blew his engine on the line. He faced surprise finalist Ed Careccia, and Tharp's 6.76/222.22 easily overtook Ed's off-pace 7.48. He was at Dallas International for the NHRA Springnationals on June 14. He beat Vern Anderson in round one before fouling against Don Moody in round two. Laplace held a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race on June 21 that saw the FCs get a half-second handicap. The MPH clocks were out for this event. In Richard's first race, he fouled away a 7.05 in a loss to Dick Harrell's 7.69. He also fouled against Tom McEwen in the second race that had Tharp's 7.12 lose to the Duster's 7.41. He won his last race, running a 7.04 to beat Karamesines 'Cuda. The team was back at Dallas International in July for an eight-car show. Tharp's 6.91 qualified #4, and in the first round, his competition, Dale Emery, fouled. He and Eddie Taylor had a good, close race in the semifinals that saw Taylor's 6.88/213 beat his 6.88/218.97. On August 2, the team was at Epping for the AHRA Grand American race. Tharp ran 6.71/222.22 (Top Speed) in the opening round and 6.75/209.75 in round two over Don Cook. In the semifinal, his 6.78/218 lost to eventual winner Jim Nicoll's 6.72. They were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships the following weekend. Tharp was running strong again, easily winning his first two races. A 6.76/211.26 advanced over Jim Lutz, who broke in the semifinal. He faced Gary Biggins in the final, and Tharp fouled, giving the win to Biggins at 6.98. At the end of August, he was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. In the opening round, he and his opponent, Preston Davis, smoked the tires, but Tharp's 7.70 won over Davis' 8.94. In round his, his 6.76/223.88 fell to Jimmy King's 6.78/223. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.696/217.39. We need to confirm they were in this car (We are not sure what NHRA event he ran the 6.69/217, but it was not Pomona as Low ET there was 6.74, and Tharp failed to qualify. The team did not compete at Indy that had a 6.73 "bump.")

Notes: Walt qualified low at Firebird Raceway in the first week of October for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.42 (Low ET) at 211.26. He fouled away a 6.53 in the first round against eventual winner Stephen Fedele. The following week, he was in Las Vegas for the NHRA Division Six final. A 6.46/207.85 qualified #3. In the opening round, his 6.49/205.94 beat Larry Klinger. In the second round, he ran another 6.46 at 203.15 to defeat Mark Vasquez's 6.83/198. In the semi-final, he lost to Bruce McDowell, where his 6.51/200.44 fell to Bruce's 6.43/209. Shortly after that, he went to Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, where he set Low ET in qualifying low with a 6.39/213.98. Rick Santos fouled against him in the opener, and he advanced with a 6.67/205.76. But in round two, his 6.69/211.16 was stopped by Gary Scelzi's 6.55/211. We need to confirm that Walt went 222 in 1985. The fastest record speed was Bryan Raymer's 221.55 at Amarillo. The Safeway Sandblasting car was at NHRA D7 Fremont, CA, in 1986. Was it Rhodes or Stark?

Notes: What a difference a year makes. At the '89 Winternationals, Don qualified #1 with a 7.33, but at Pomona for the '90 event, his best of 7.40/187.50 was good for the first alternate. He failed to qualify at the next few NHRA races, the Arizona Nats, where another 7.40 at 186.10 was the second alternate, and at the Super Nationals at Baytown (where his 7.40/186.48 was the twelfth alternate). Another 7.40 at 186.02 (second alternate) missed the show at the Gatornationals. He was the fifth alternate at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational with a 7.40/186.64, and he failed to make the cut in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, where he was the eighth alternate at 7.36/187.96. His best times of the year were 7.310/188.20 at NHRA Ennis Fall.

Notes: Tom was in Suffolk in March for an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 6.56/189 lost to Sarge Arciero's 6.43/212, but that doesn't tell the whole story. Raley's car broke an axle at the top end of the track, which sent him across the track and into the other lane. He brought the car to a safe stop, but it could have been much worse. Shortly after that (March 31), he was at Charlotte Speedway for the IHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and the track was 1/8 mile. Both he and his opponent Pat Dakin ran 4.39 (Raley at 167) in the opening round of eliminations, but Dakin crossed the stripe first. He was at Maple Grove early in April for its Spring All-Pro race. His 6.74/202.24 beat Roger Toth's 7.12/147 in the "Hemi-Hunter" in the opening round. Raley's 6.42/196.07 had just defeated Chuck Turner's 6.66/210 in the "American Way" in the semifinals. Things took a turn for the worse after that when Turner lost control of his car just past the finish line and collided with the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. Both cars were destroyed, but both drivers were able to walk away. Tom only got some bruises.

Notes: Three successive class bests in 1973: 6.35 and 6.27 at Indy (won Funny Car Eliminator over the Ace in the final), then a fantastic 6.16 at the Supernationals. When Don didn't like his new '74 US Army Vega, this car was pulled out of the garage, painted in US Army colors, and won Indy again. 6.29 Green Valley | In 1973, Prudhomme singlehandedly won the team title for Plymouth over a 16-car field at the 5th Annual Manufacturer's Meet at Rockford, Ill. - RT | Photo from 1973 AHRA Grand Nationals, Dragway 42. | Early in '73, Don was still racing his Top Fuel car. He didn't enter his Funny Car in competition at the AHRA or the NHRA Winternationals; he ran in Top Fuel instead. But on March 11, he showed up at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals with his 'Cuda. He qualified #9 and, in the first round, set Low ET of the meet with a 6.45 to beat low qualifier Tom Hoover who ran 6.56. In round two, he faced Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega panel. Don fouled away a 6.60/209.30, giving Brown an easy 7.09 run into the semifinals. The following week, he was at NHRA Gatornationals but was back in the top fuel car. He was back in the Funny Car for the Seattle Northwest Open in April. He ran a 6.43 to qualify, but in the first round, he lost a rod while doing his burnout. On April 11, he was at the AHRA Grand American in Tulsa. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet pass of 6.50/226.13 qualified #1. He had a clutch explode during eliminations and hit the guardrail, thus ending his day. The car was wearing black primer from being repaired when he showed up at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships on April 21. He set Top Speed at 230.76, but after making a first-round solo, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified while racing Gerry Glenn. The following week, he was in Seattle for its Northwest Open. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.54/229 (Top Speed), but while doing his burnout for his first-round race against Rich Rogers, a rod let go, and he had to shut down. There were no shortages of places for Don to run as everywhere he raced, a crowd followed. He was at Green Valley for the AHRA Grand American early in May. He qualified #1 at 6.37 and then beat Mart Higginbotham and Dale Pulde (MT Grand Am). He then defeated Don Schumacher in the semifinal with an engine blowing 6.29. He would face Tom Grove in the final. Grove's car failed to fire, so Prudhomme limped it down the track for the win.

Notes: McDowell was a former sand racer. Bruce was the fourth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.879/196.93. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he really made people take notice. He ran 6.72 and 6.63/204.08 before losing in the semifinal. That semifinal race was a good one, as he and eventual winner Dave Hage both ran 6.59 (Bruce at 205.01). Shortly after that (March 20), he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Six opener. He qualified second in the eight-car field, and his 6.52/207.65 in the first round beat Jerry Darien's 6.79/206. He was late off the line in the semifinal, and his 6.61/205.94 lost to Mark Niver's 6.69. On April 17, he was at Las Vegas International for the High Roller National Open. McDowell set Low ET at 6.59, but in the final, his 6.68/201.79 lost to Hage's quicker-leaving 6.72/204. | 6.66 205.01 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/83

Notes: Warren did not compete at the NHRA Winternationals. The reason for this was that NHRA did not approve his cylinder heads. He was at Moroso Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division Two race held shortly after. This is where he debuted his new Cutlass and showed up with a new 18-wheeler to haul it in. It was an eight-car show, and WJ qualified #2 with a 7.91/174.41. He won his opening race over Russell Jung with a 7.85/175.09 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, in the semifinal, his late 7.91/174.41 lost to Wayne Ellison's 8.04/171. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 7.71/178.57. He slept on the line in the first round, and his 7.73/177 lost to Carlton Phillips' 7.77/176. I believe he was still running the 500 cubic inch engine at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. His 7.77/177.86 qualified second to Lee Shepherd's 7.71/178.A 7.87/172.08 beat Phillips 8.03/174 in the opening round. He reached the final, where he ran Shepherd. The two had a good race, but Lee's 7.69/181 got the better of WJ's 7.72/180.36. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 7.84/174.75 qualified #4. In the first round, he faced Phillips again, and WJ's 7.87/172.74 beat Carlton's 8.04/172. But in the semifinals, eventual winner Shepherd's 7.82/175 beat his 7.86/174.08. He had an interesting day at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He actually got beat twice. He lost to Shepherd in the semifinal, but Lee forgot to weigh in after the race, and WJ was reinstated. He went up against Rickie Smith in the final, losing for the second time.WJ then went to Baton Rouge at the end of May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.69 (Low ET) at 177.86 qualified #1. In the opening round, his 7.75/177.16 beat Joe Lepone's 7.92/174. In the semifinal, the pesky Camaro from Texas beat him, Lee's 7.82/177 beat WJ's late 7.77/177.86. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He always ran well at Bristol, and '83 was no exception. His 7.86/178 qualified #3. His best run came in round two, where a 7.83/181.45 beat Roy Hill's Capri. But once again, he lost to Shepherd in the semifinal. WJ won the World Finals at OCIR, his first in exactly one year. WJ qualified his Hurst Olds third with a 7.658 and, in eliminations, ran 7.68, 7.70, 7.71, and 7.69, defeating Rickie Smith, Jerry Eckman, Bob Glidden, and Lee Shepherd (on a holeshot to Shepherd's 7.68). Warren's best NHRA speed was 181.08 at Indy.

He beat Tony Gillig in the opening round with a 6.80/204.96. In round two, his 6.78/204.82 defeated Jon Yoak. But he then fouled away a 6.79/205.57 in the semi-final against Jerry Yeoman, who advanced at 6.81/202. The teams were back at Darlington in May for the IHRA Southern Nationals. Floyd's 6.78/205.10 qualified #13. His day ended early as his 6.83/204.63 in the first round lost to Gillig's 6.75/204. Cheek set Low ET while qualifying low at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in July. His 6.82/202.76 got him the spot. In round one, a 6.89/199.55 easily beat John Konigshofer's troubled 7.32/152. Another 6.82 at 201.58 took out Yoak's 6.92/199 in round two. He picked up to 6.86/203.09 (Top Speed) in the semi-final to drop David Jenkins' 6.90/200. He faced Ron Miller in the final, and Cheek had the edge as he had been quicker in every round than Miller. But Ron got out on him in the final, and his 6.92/199 held on for the victory over Cheek's 6.88/202.27 runner-up effort. After qualifying on the pole, he barely made the show at New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 6.90/201.31 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He faced low qualifier John Montecalvo in round one and shut down to 7.7/142.16 in a loss to John's 6.89/200. Photo: 1998 IHRA Northern Nats, Stanton, MI. Defending IHRA Pro Stock World Champ, far lane, qualified 5th at 6.76/205.54 but was beaten by Gene Wilson's holeshot in Round 1, a 6.88/192 over his 6.78/205.

Notes: WON $5000 BONUS for 185 MPH plus run. Ran the Texas Drag Racing League, a class like ADRL XTF. Runner up and crashed after running the quickest 10.5 pass earlier. | Todd Moyer had a great weekend in Baytown. On Saturday, Moyer won the $5000 bonus for the first official 185 MPH pass in ADRL Extreme 10.5. Todd might have done it on Friday if he had not left before the tree was activated. Moyer ran 187.05 in the second session while running 4.122. The elapsed time was good enough for the first spot. Moyer ran a good 4.186 at a whopping 187.63 on a solo run in the first round. Moyer redlighted away a 4.37, 185.92 to his competitor’s winning 5.662, 101.58 in the second round. - Danny White
