Notes: Danny didn't run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but in March, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.34/224.27 qualified #8. In the opening round, his 6.43/216.55 defeated Terry Mullins' 6.50/218. In round two, he fouled and shut down against Brad Anderson. He was in Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was just an eight-car field, and his 6.46/216.97 qualified #6. A 6.57/211.56 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Don Gay Jr.'s 6.30/219. He went to Indianapolis at the beginning of May for the NHRA Division Three opener. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.40/222.49. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Vern Moats. Danny tried hard, but his 6.42/217.49 finished second to Moats' 6.37/220. His next stop was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He ran 6.40/218.71 in qualifying this time, which got him the #6 spot in the eight-car field. In round one, Danny improved to 6.34/217.07, but it wasn't enough to beat Austin's 6.32/223. He won the second NHRA Division Three race held at Union Grove on June 5. Not only did he win, but he also qualified #1 and set Top Speed and Low ET. He got the pole with a 6.33 (Low ET) at 220.22. In the first round, his 6.34/220.58 (Top Speed) beat a fouling Al DaPozzo. In the semi-final, a consistent 6.35/220.04 beat Moats' 6.47/218. He faced Don Defluiter in the final, and another 6.34/220.58 got the victory over Don's 6.47/214. Notes: Jack and Bill Schultz had one of the quickest Top Gas cars going in the super-competitive class during '68. At the NHRA Winternationals, they qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.73/194.80. A first-round 8.05/193.98 took care of Earl Poage's 8.08/166. In round two, Jack beat Monty Montgomery with a 7.74/182.54. He was quick on the lights in the semifinal with his 7.79/194.38, beating Billy Scott's quicker 7.77/192. In the final, he faced Gordon Collett. Jones slowed to an 8.04/193.96, which gave him the runner-up spot to Gordon's 7.88/187. The team then went to Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. It was an eight-car field, and Jones qualified #1 with a 7.81/194.38 (Top Speed). He improved to 7.80/193.74 in the opening round to beat Bill Smith, and in the semifinal, Tony Nancy fouled against him, so he advanced with a 7.94/159.85. He faced the "Freight Train" driven by Billy Scott in the final. The "Train" smoked the tires, and Jones set Low ET while winning with a 7.74/193.12 over Scott's 8.06/175. He got a big win on July 20 at Lions for the PDA Professional Dragster Championships. Jack beat the "Freight Train" in the final with a 7.57/199.10. To get into the final, he ran times of 7.51, 7.58, 7.63, and 7.70. Jack ran 7.60, no time, 7.66, and 7.64 to win Indy. On October 26, they were at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. Jack set Low ET with a 7.55/200.88 in the second round over Phil Soares' ailing car. In the semifinals, a 7.63/201.34 beat the "Gas House Gang's" 7.88/191. Jack won the show with a final round 7.68/202.70 (Top Speed) over Don Hampton's 7.77/189. The team was back at Irwindale on December 8 for an eight-car show. Jack qualified #2 with a 7.66, and in the first round, he beat the "Gaslight" with a 7.74/192.30. In the semifinal, he stayed consistent with a 7.74/196.06 over Soares' 7.93/190. He eased to an 8.77 victory when Bob Muravez crossed the centerline in the final.

Notes: At Pomona, for the season-opening '95 NHRA Winternatiionals, eleven Oldsmobiles qualified for the sixteen-car field. The next time they raced at Pomona was for the '96 NHRA Winternationals. Olds had pulled out of the sport after the '95 season, and it sure showed at the season opener. Only six Cutlass' qualified, and Schmidt was the quickest. His 7.03/196.97 (Top Speed) qualified second to Warren Johnson's 7.01/196. Steve continued to push out the big speed readings with a 7.05/196.63 in round one, which defeated Mark Pawuk's 7.10/194. In round two, his 7.06/196.42 lost to Chuck Harris' 7.05/196. He was once again the fastest of the breed at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals.WJ topped qualifying with a 7.04/195, but Steve's similar 7.04/196.59 (Top Speed) was right behind. He beat Mike Thomas's 7.10/194 in round one with a 7.08/195.39. But in round two, he fouled away a 7.05/196.24 against Ray Franks, who advanced with a 7.12/194. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he remained the quickest Olds, but his 7.01/197.67 (Top Speed) was #5 behind four Firebirds. In the opening round, a 7.04/196.50 took out Troy Coughlin's 7.14/193. Tom Martino's 7.08/195 fell to his 7.05/196.59 in round two, and in the semifinal, he beat Mark Osborn's 7.10/194 with a 7.06/196.07. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Yates in the final. He was not the quickest Oldsmobile at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals; his 7.04/196.63 qualified #7, and fellow Cutlass racer Mike Edwards qualified one spot ahead of him. Schmidt took an easy 7.57/142.74 win over a fouling Thomas in round one before losing a very close race against Yates in round two, where both drivers ran 7.04 (Schmidt at 196.59). It was also the first race of the year that Steve didn't set low speed. He then went to Rockingham in April for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 7.02/196.20 qualified #7. Terry Adams lost to his 7.12/194.80 in the opening round. In round two, his 7.10/195.43 lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.05/195. Shortly after that, he was at Atlanta, where his 7.05/195.92 qualified #5 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Unfortunately, he fouled against Bruce Allen in the first round. His next stop was at Richmond in the first week of May for the NHRA Virginia Nationals. An excellent 7.02/196.76 qualified #3, and in the first round, his 7.03/196.89 defeated Kurt Johnson's 7.10/195. Despite running 7.04/196.46 in round two, he lost to Mike Edwards' 7.03/196. Rick Howard (qualifying) photo from the 1996 US Nats, Indy. Surprise non-qualifier with a first alternate effort of 7.107/194.72. He started the year with three consecutive Top Speed of the Meet efforts at Pomona, Phoenix, and Gainesville (at 197.67, his best number of the year). Then Top Speed at Memphis. Low ET at the Mile Highs. Runner up to Yates at Gainesville and Denver. Runner up to Warren Johnson at Brainerd. Formerly listed 6.965. That did not occur in NHRA national event competition (confirmed best ET was 7.004 at Maple Grove). We are removing it until we get confirmation.

Notes: Hodkinson began the year at a booked-in race at NHRA D4 Green Valley, TX. Hodkinson crossed the center line on the burnout and during the run. Steve was in Atlanta for an eight-car show in March. He failed to qualify but got into the field when Jim Head lost a supercharger and could not run. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Tom Hoover. He qualified #4 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but in the first round, he lost fire, giving opponent Norm Day a solo into the semifinals. In April, at the NHRA Southern Nationals, Steve qualified #13 with a 5.96/239.48 but lost to Tim Grose in the first round. He went to Rockingham shortly after that for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.91/247.25 qualified on the "bump." He scored a major upset in the first round, where his 5.88/246.57 beat low qualifier Mark Oswald's 6.05/205. On June 7, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was a weak field, as an 11.84-time slip made the show. Hodkinson ran 6.27/227.33 for the #13 spot in the show. He got out of shape in the first round and crossed the centerline, advancing Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His next stop was at Kansa City for the ADRA Summernationals. While he failed to reach the finals, he did qualify with a career-best (to this point) 5.83/251.39. Shortly after that, he made a stop at Alamo Raceway, where the NHRA Division Four race also featured eight-car fields in the Pro classes. His 7.05 qualified #4, and in the first round, he crossed the center line and was disqualified while racing Don Sosenka. At the IHRA World Nationals, his 6.10/226.13 qualified last for the eight-car field. He gave Oswald a race in the first round, where both drivers ran 5.87 (Steve at 238.73), but Mark crossed the finish line first. In September, he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.87/247.32. A slight holeshot and a 5.88/245.56 beat John Force's 5.85/249, but in the second round, his 5.96/240.77 lost to Brad Tuttle's 5.86/241. He ran an amazing 5.730/256.84 at the World Finals to finish the season with his best NHRA national event times.

Notes: Karp was in New England in May for its Potpourri Nationals. His 7.38/193.97 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but he hurt some parts and could not run in competition. He failed to qualify at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic but got into the show as an alternate. Unfortunately, he lost to Dale Hall in the opening round. He competed at the 1st annual Night of Thrills race at Englishtown. There were twelve cars there, and all were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars running in the final. Arnie set Top Speed in the first round, where his 7.32/199.11 defeated Bruce Pillar's 7.27/191. But once again, he had engine trouble and could not return for round two. Arnie qualified #30 at Indy with a 6.96 (need detailed times). He upset a broken Chuck Rearick in round one at 7.00/197.80. He ran a consistent 7.02/198.23 in round two but lost to Bill Wallace's 6.81/203. Confirmed 199.11 at Englishtown, but a for sale add at the end of the year cited 6.96/200. Photo from 1977.

Notes: NHRA record holder. Vic Brown had his most successful year driving a fuel dragster in '68 for Bob Creitz and Ed Greer. He started the season by setting Top Speed at the AHRA Winternationals. AHRA used Fosdick timing equipment, while most other tracks used Chrondek. The ETs and speeds often differed from what we were used to seeing on Chrondek timers. It was reported that Vic set Top Speed at 225.22, yet in the first round, he beat Dave Beebe with a 7.13/226.12. He lost before the finals, but it was good to know if anyone knows the official Top Speed at the AHRA event. Brown had some bad luck at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and as a result, he failed to qualify. In a qualifying pass, he had the parachute fail, and he ended up hitting the hay bales and bending the chassis. So, he attempted to qualify the Nash and Williams car with the Creitz and Greer car out of commission. Not three hours after he hit the hay bales, he did it again in their car when, once again, the 'chute failed. At the Stardust Open held in Las Vegas just two weeks after Pomona, it was surprising to see Vic back behind the wheel of the "Creitz and Donovan" car so soon after the accident. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.21. Vic ran as well as a 7.04 (twice) on the way to the final, where he met Tom McEwen. Unfortunately, he fouled, giving McEwen the win. He grabbed a big win at the PDA Championships on March 3 at OCIR. It was a 64-car show, and Brown had a couple of easy rounds, but in the semifinals, he ran a 6.80 to advance over a fouling Chris Karamesines. In the final, he was up against Don Garlits. He must have had "Big Daddy" on edge as Don fouled, and Vic eased to victory with a 9.31/102.29. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 7.16 qualified #23 in the 32-car field, but he lost to Dwight Salisbury in the opening round. On March 24, he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. It was another 32-car show, and he lost to McEwen in round three. But McEwen broke, so Brown was reinstated for the semifinals. It was Kelly Brown vs. Vic Brown (no relation), and Kelly's 7.42 beat Vic's sleepy 7.29. Don Cook beat him in the final at Kansas City for the Texas Pro Fuel Circuit, and the two finished in the same positions at the Texas Pro Circuit race at Green Valley Raceway on May 11. He qualified #2 with a 7.47/211.26 and set a track record 7.15 in the first round. Vic ran another 7.15 in the semifinals at 192.70 to advance to the final. In the final, both cars had trouble with Cook blowing his clutch but still won with a 7.89 when Brown shut down with problems. Vic won Oklahoma's Pro Circuit race on May 12, beating a sixteen-car field. He set Top Speed at 221.12 on the way to the win. In the final, he beat Cook. A week later (May 18), he was at another race in Oklahoma City. He had a good first-round race with Cook, winning with a 7.18/220.00 over Don's 7.27/218. He won his semifinal race to advance into the final, where he ran Bennie Osborn. Vic fouled away a 7.25/219.84, which gave Bennie a 7.21/220 victory. At the end of May, he was at Pittsburgh for its Eastern Fuel Dragster Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Connie Kalitta's Ford in the opening round. It rained after their race, and the race was postponed a week until the 29th. Scott Wilson's Ford lost fire in his semifinal race, and Vic made an easy run to advance. He went up against Chuck Kurzawa, driving for the "Ramchargers" in the final, and his 7.15/216.86 finished runner-up to Chuck's 7.09/209. Brown had an eventful day at Bristol on June 9 for the AHRA Springnationals. He was running really well, and in the semifinal, he came up against Cook. Both ended up getting disqualified as first Brown fouled, and then Cook crossed the centerline. The following week, the team was at Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.94/220.68 qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field. In round one, his late 6.97/219.50 lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 7.08/208. Also ran 6.945 at NHRA Englishtown 6/68.

Notes: It had been a long time since Mercury was at the top of the heap in drag racing. You would have to go back to the late sixties to see the make so competitive. Back then, the manufacturer was involved; now, all the success came from independent car owners. Gene was driving Charlie Hunt's Cougar and, up until this season, had never won an IHRA race. That all changed as he would win a record-tying eight races. That tied him with Bob Glidden, who had done that in '76. The car was quick, qualifying low at nine consecutive IHRA events and setting both ends of the IHRA record to 6.532/213.37. 2001 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Notes: After running a T-Bird for the last few seasons, Smith switched to a Mustang for '86. He did rather well with it, winning the IHRA Pro Stock title. He started the season at Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals. A 7.32/189.87 qualified #2 behind Roy Hill. Rickie ran another 7.32 at 188.67 in the first round to beat Terry Adams out of shape T-Bird. He advanced into the semifinal with a 7.36/189 when Jerry Yeoman's Camaro broke in round two. But the semis was as far as Smith would get as his 7.40/188 lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.28/191 in Jerry Haas' Camaro. He did better at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships in May. He qualified #3 with a 7.38/189.47 and another 7.38 at 190, beating Al Waters in the first round. In the second round, both he and Bob Harris ran 7.45 (Rickie at Top Speed of the meet 192.30), with the Mustang getting the win light. A 7.40/187.50 advanced to the final over a fouling Roy Hill. He faced Bruce Allen in the Reher and Morrison Camaro in the final. The two had a great race, but Allen's 7.37/187 beat Smith's 7.39/185. He was runner-up to Hill at the MIR Spring Mountain Motor Championships. The next IHRA event was the Springnationals at Bristol. Rickie qualified #4 and ran steady 7.5s to reach the semifinals, where he faced Allen. Once again, Bruce got the better of him, and his 7.53 lost to the Camaro's 7.46. A 7.48 qualified #5 at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Again, he made his way to the semifinals by beating Terry Walters and Barry Shirley. In the semis, he lost to a strong running Bob Glidden, who went on to win. At the IHRA Northern Nationals, he made a timed run of 193.13 (career-best to this point). He then qualified #5 with a 7.44/189.47 and then beat Charlie Peppers with another 7.44 at 191.08 in round one, while a 7.45/192.30 beat Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird in round two. But in the semifinals, he lost to Glidden, who again went on to win. Rickie made it into the final at the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #3 and beat Shirley, Ruth, and a fouling Billy Ewing in the semifinals with a 7.52. But in the final, he faced that T-Bird from Whiteland and his 7.52/185.95 finished second best to Glidden's 7.38/189. Smith was overdue for a win, and he got one. Thompson Dragway held its Independence Eve Championships, and Rickie won. Traction wasn't the best as Low ET was a 7.65 he Hill's Topaz, but Smith ran 7.84/184 over Harold Denton driving Ruth's Firebird in the first round, and a 7.75/188.67 beat Mark Pawuk in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Joe Lepone. Joe fouled away a 7.82/178, and Smith went on to the victory with a 7.69/188.67. That seemed to help as he then went to Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships and won that, too. A 7.50 qualified #4, but he improved to a track record 7.42 in the first round to beat Harry Scribner's Cougar. He beat Hill's out-of-shape in the second round, Topaz, with a 7.48/183.25. Alderman fouled against him in the semifinals, and the final shaped up to be the Mustang against Ewing's Camaro. Rickie slowed to a 7.58/184.42 in the final, but it was enough to beat Billy's 7.64/180. He made yet another final-round appearance at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Rickie qualified #4 and then ran 7.52 in the first round over Dean Goforth, and in round two, he beat Ed Dixon. In the semifinals, he picked up to 7.47 to beat Tim Nabors. In the all-Ford final, he was up against Hill. Roy pulled a huge holeshot and held on to win with a 7.47/186, beating Smith's 7.43/185.90. The same two met in the final at the next IHRA race, the US Open at Rockingham. Rickie had gotten into the final by beating Buddy Ingersoll's turbocharged Buick with a 7.38; he then beat Nabors' Camaro and Adams' T-Bird to meet with Hill again. The roles were reversed this time, with Smith scoring the win over Roy's Topaz. In September, he was at Bristol for the Hurst Pro Stock Shootout. The eight cars that qualified the best during the year made up the field. He beat Nabors in the first round with a 7.46/189.47, but he was surprised in the semifinals when Ruth picked up to a 7.41/190 to beat him. The next day (September 21), IHRA held their season final, the Fallnationals. A 7.40/188 qualified Rickie #3 in the show. He ran well, stopping Dixon in round two with a 7.49/187. But in the semifinals, all hell broke loose when Rickie ran 7.46/188 and lost to Ingersoll's 7.33/192. This performance from a turbocharged V6 against the over 700 cubic inch monster motored cars was unacceptable. The IHRA Pro Stock drivers wanted the Buick out. Ingersoll lost to Glidden in the final to save face for the big-engined cars. That was the end of turbocharged cars in IHRA Pro Stock. They were outlawed after this race. 1985 and 1986 IHRA Pro Stock World Champion.

Notes: After Don Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein switched to Top Fuel for the '90 season, everyone expected this team to dominate. Things didn't work out that way. Mark started '90 by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.29/279.41 (Top Speed). He lost to Art Hendey in the first round. At Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Mark's 5.40/275.06 qualified #8. In the first round, he had a close race with Ed McCulloch that saw his 5.37/277.77 defeat Ed's 5.37/265. In round two, another 5.37 at 275.48 beat K.C. Spurlock's slightly quicker 5.36/276. Both he and opponent Bruce Larson had problems in their semifinal race, but Larson's tire-smoking 6.43/147 beat Oswald, who shut down to a 10.97/71.03. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals in Texas. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.32/282.22 (Top Speed). An even better 5.30/278.37 in the first round, beat Gary Densham, and he got a solo in round two when Tom Hoover could not show. Mark ran a wheelstanding 7.29 to advance. In the semifinals, his 5.41/283.10 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.28/278. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.36/276.41 qualified #4, and a 5.63/231.24 in the opening round beat Frank Kramberger's 5.68/261. But Oswald lost to eventual winner McCulloch in round two. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car show; his 5.35/278.12 (Top Speed) qualified #6. His times were not great, but Oswald made it into the final. He started by running 5.48/272.23 in the opening round to beat Jim White in the "Hawaiian." Both he and Larson smoked the tires in the semifinal, with Mark's 5.62/267.69 coming out on top over Bruce's 5.86/247. He faced John Force in the final, and the two put on a great race as both ran 5.43 (Oswald at 277.26), but Force crossed the stripe first for the victory. Atlanta was a race Oswald would rather forget. The car kept dropping cylinders on every pass. He "only" qualified #14 with a 5.64/277.34, and he was out after the first round as McCulloch's 5.35/267 beat his 5.48/268.81 and went on to win. But as bad as Atlanta had been, Memphis was the exact opposite. Mark qualified #7 with a 5.36/281.16, beating Johnny West in the first round. He had a close race with Spurlock in round two, where both ran 5.37 (Oswald at 278), but Mark crossed the line first. A 5.40/265 in the semifinals stopped Larson's 5.50, and Oswald found himself in the final against McCulloch. He got some payback from the last couple of losses to the "Ace" by running a 5.42/279.15 in the final over Ed's 5.47/265. Baton Rouge was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Cajun Nationals. Oswald qualified #3 with a 5.43/273.14. He beat Del Denton in the first round, and despite smoking the tires to a 6.85/145 in round two, he won when Neely fouled. But he smoked the tires once again in the semifinals and lost to Richard Hartman. He also made it as far as the semifinals at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 5.44/272.06 and, in round one, beat Hartman's 5.52/260 with another 5.44 at 274.55. Larson fouled against him in round two, and Mark advanced with a 5.45/274.30. But in the semifinals, Oswald fouled against White. The team then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Mark's 5.45/268.97 qualified #4. Things went fairly well for the team. A 5.49 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann, and a second-round 5.47/267 beat Tom Hoover. Mark's driving in the semifinal got the car into the final as his 5.43/268.41 defeated Larson's 5.42/269. Oswald even had lane choice over Force for their final round meeting, but Mark had problems and shut down to 10.92/70.15 while Force won with a 5.40/267. Photo from Columbus 1989.
