Notes: Also 6.35 at Lions Last Drag Race 72. Won IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 in August 72 with a 6.50/221.13. Ran 6.38 at Palm Beach, 6.313/224.43 at Tulsa PRA. | The team started the season at Fremont's New Year’s Day race. It was an eight-car show and a 6.72 beat Denver Schutz in round one, but Flip fouled against eventual winner Dennis Baca in the semifinals. They were at OCIR for the third All-Pro race where Flip's 6.51 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but an ailing 7.17 in the opening round lost to Clayton Harris' 6.22/233. Schofield got a bit of revenge at the Las Vegas National Open where he got around Harris in the first round. This time Harris broke on the run. In the second round, Flip got beat by Jeb Allen. He was back at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals where a 6.38 in qualifying was good enough for the #2 spot in the field behind Don Garlits' 6.30. A first-round 6.46/223.88 beat Don Cook and in round two another 6.46 beat an out of shape Jim Nicoll. But in the semifinals, both he and Allen ran 6.47 (Flip at 227.84), but the "kid" got the win light. Later in the month, they were at the Race of Champions at Fresno, but Flip lost to Jim Lynn in the opening round. At the AHRA Pro-Am Championships at West Palm Beach, a 6.38 qualified well, but the team failed to reach the finals. They looked like a sure bet to win at the Florida State Championships at Miami-Hollywood. Flip qualified #1 with a 6.55/215.82. He improved to 6.51/225.56 in beating Marvin Schwartz in the first round, and he easily won his semifinal race to face #2 qualifier Steve Carbone in the final. Unfortunately, the car lost fire on the line and Carbone soloed for the win. It was then off to Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. A 6.51 qualified #4 and an even better 6.43 beat the Anderson Brothers in the opening round. In round two he used a 6.58 to beat a tire-smoking Gary Cochran, but in the semifinals, the team was having trouble keeping the car lit. It finally died and Nicoll took a single to advance to the final. The NHRA Division 7 Opener was held at Irwindale. Schofield failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Larry Bowers broke and Flip replaced him in the show. In the first round a 6.70 beat Mike Snively, but he lost in the following round. |

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94/249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89/244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round, he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87/243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first-round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02/248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98/246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93/245 beat Ron Correnti, putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93/248.48 for the victory. Things reverted back to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen-car show with a 5.98, but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95/234.13, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83/251.53 and lost early. Jim went on to win NHRA Brainerd. His best NHRA times were 5.718/254.66 at the Keystone Nationals. Did Jim run 261 on the IHRA tour this year or was that from another year? |

Notes: Pryor had one of 35 Top Fuel cars that showed up to qualify for Bristol's sixteen-car field for the IHRA Springnationals. He got the #10 spot in the show, and in the opening round, he upset Don Garlits' 6.33/226 with a 6.32/223.88. In the second round, he battled with fellow Donovan campaigner Pat Dakin. Unfortunately, Pryor's 6.34/192.30 lost to Dakin's 6.37/226. But Pat had hurt his engine on the run, and with the "break rule" in effect, Pryor got back into the show for being the Low ET loser from the round before. However, his second chance was short-lived as the car broke on the line against Sarge Arciero, driving the "Jade Grenade" in the semifinal. He was in Minnesota on July 21 for the second NHRA Division Five race. His 6.57/219.51 beat Harold Brewer's 7.05/195 in the first round. But the car died on the line in the semifinal, and Bill had to watch as eventual winner John Wiebe soloed into the final. A week later (July 28), Pryor was at Tri-City for the third NHRA Division Three race. He didn't hang around long, as he fouled against Chuck Kurzawa in the opening round. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.60 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. Wiebe's car failed to fire in the opening round of eliminations, and Bill advanced with a 6.65. He improved to 6.29 in the semifinal to defeat a tire-smoking John Austin. In the final, he faced Jack Hart's "Golddigger," driven by Billy Campbell. The two had a good race that saw Pryor's 6.30/225.01 get the victory over Campbell's 6.46/193. A large number of cars (39) showed up at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Bill's 6.33 qualified #14 for the sixteen-car show. But he got out of shape in the opening round and shut down to a 7.89 loss against Jack Mitchell, who won with a 6.33. He was at New York National for the PRO National Challenge race the following week. It was a 32-car field, and his 6.33/207.84 qualified #17. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Wiebe. Pryor blew his engine in their race with his 6.25/182.54 losing to John's 5.96/217. DNQ at Indy (their only NHRA National event) at 6.330/221.13. Formerly listed 5.965/228.42? Did the team run those times this early? Please let us know if you have the info. | Seems to be mislettered, but if you look at the photo closely, you can see that Pryor's name is actually spelled correctly. Just a unique Y. - Tim Simplot |

Notes: Won Top Gas at 1969 Springnationals. Raced the car as Bob Muravez. The Floyd Lippencotte Jr. moniker was retired. Raced at all four NHRA national events in 1969. Ran 7.81 at Pomona, 7.51 at Springnationals (Dallas), 7.46 at Indy Nationals, 7.56 at World Finals (Dallas). Top Gas was fading in popularity in the late sixties. Cars like this made people stand up in the stands and root for their "driver." The "Freight Train" was a crowd favorite, and it brought some well-needed attention back to the class. Muravez was the first alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with his 7.81/175.56. Bill Smith qualified eighth but broke and was unable to compete. Bob took his place in the field. In the opening round of eliminations, he fouled against Richard Rogers. On March 9, the "Freight Train" was at OCIR for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, his 8.04 failed to qualify for the all-seven second show. He did better the following weekend (March 16) at Riverside for the HRM Championships. It was another eight-car field, and his 7.73 qualified #3. He had a close race against Steve San Paolo in the first round that saw his 7.84 defeat Steve's 7.86. But the car lost fire on the line in the semifinal against Mike Snively. On May 10, OCIR held another Top Gas race. Twenty-one cars showed up to attempt to qualify for the eight-car show. Muravez ran 7.67/200.88 (Top Speed) to qualify #7. In round one, the front engine blew, and he lost to Dick Rosberg. He won the NHRA Division Seven race at Irwindale on May 24. Another win came at Dallas in mid-June for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 7.60/197.80. Ray Ruettiman fouled against him in the "Gopher State" car, and Bob eased it through with an 8.91 to advance. He improved to 7.51/200.44 (Top Speed) in the second round to beat Mark Pieri. In the semifinal, Rico Paris fell to Bob's 7.54/199.55. He faced Phil Hobbs in the final, and the "Freight Train" was not to be denied, as Muravez ran 7.54/198.67 for the victory over Phil's 7.68/189. Shortly after that (July 5), he went to Lions for an eight-car show. Bob set Low ET in qualifying with a 7.49, but he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in round one. |

Notes: Stephens was at Dallas International in March for the second Texas Pro-circuit race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 7.20/191.89 qualified #14. His 7.24/202.70 in the opening round lost to Chip Woodall's 6.84/201, but as the Low ET loser of the first round, he got back into the show when Mike Tarter broke. In round two, Doug Mead broke on the line against him, and Steve's 7.33/205.94 advanced. He then ran 6.92/211.26 in the semi-final to defeat Arthur Ingleharte. He faced Bob Gibson in the final, and Stephens' 7.12 took the victory. He was at LaPlace in April for an eight-car show. He made an easy solo in round one when Cliff Smith failed to fire, and in the semi-final, his 7.35 lost to eventual winner Tarter's 6.99. The second NHRA Division Four race was held at Southland Dragway on May 23. In the first round, Steve's 7.04/212 lost to Tarter's 6.70/202. He was back at Oklahoma City for an eight-car show shortly after that. His 7.20 had qualified second to Norm Gingrass's 7.13, but he had hurt his motor in qualifying and was unable to run in eliminations. Steve was at Green Valley over the Labor Day weekend, where he ran a best of 6.75/208 in winning. In the final, go got to solo when his opponent, Woodall, blew his engine on the line. National Dragster, 10/29/71, confirms a 6.67 at Southland Dragway, Houma, La. We need to verify if the Gainesville 6.45 was 12/71 or 12/72. Steve ran 7.01/198.23 and went two rounds at the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo. That was the only national event for the team in 1971. |

Notes: Ron was at Beeline for a four-car show in June. In his first race, he ran 7.05/210 to beat a tire-smoking Larry Christopherson. He got an easy single in his second race as his would-be opponent, Chip Woodall, had burned some pistons and could not run. He also won his last race over a troubled Rick Chavez. Notes: Times and info from National Dragster, 6/27/75. Larry did not compete at any NHRA national events in 1975. Larry qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show at Maple Grove's Dutch Classic. He blew his clutch on the line in the first round, allowing Grant Stoms a solo into the semifinals. Shortly after that, he was at Cayuga for the NHRA Division One race. An opening round 6.96/143.31 beat Ed Moses' 7.21/171, and in the semifinals, his 6.48/194.38 beat Chevy ace Jim Bucher's 6.68/181. He faced Gary Beck in the final, and the two had a good race, but Beck's 6.47/204 got the victory over Bucher's 6.48/200.44. On June 21, he was back at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division One race. He qualified #4 with a 6.34, but his off-pace 7.37/139.31 lost to Roger Toth's 6.32/210 in the first round. |
