Notes: One of the biggest surprises at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona in '86 was Oswald's not qualifying for the show. His best attempt yielded only a 9.56/87.89. That was nowhere near the 6.09 "bump spot." The team then went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark was still not running up to par, qualifying #7 with a 6.61/237.46. A first-round 6.38/247.93 (Top Speed) beat Billy Meyer, who shut off, but in the semifinals, he shut off and lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86 (Low ET) at 236. In Gainesville, things went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mark ran a 5.70/263.00 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. In the first round, an even better 5.65/259.36 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." In the second round, it was Oswald who smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.96/49.71 that lost to Ed McCulloch. Due to a rain delay, the Gatornats were run the same weekend as the IHRA Winternationals, so obviously, they didn't run the Darlington race. But they did make IHRA's second event, the Bayou Nationals at Louisiana Raceway Park. Oswald qualified #1 and beat McCulloch in the final for the victory. He lost to Jim Head in the first round, at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta after qualifying #2 with a 5.72/258.91 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. On May 4, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Oswald qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.70, but he was upset in the opening round by Steve Hodkinson. Mark's off-pace 6.05/205.94 fell to Steve's low buck car that won with a 5.88/246. Early in June, Oswald went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 5.76/263.11 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He improved to 5.74/260.11 to defeat Force's 5.78/253 in round one, but he lost in the battle of the "beer cars" in the semifinal, where his 5.78/257.14 fell to Bernstein's 5.71/252. Mark qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.75/249.86. In their first-round race, Hodkinson crossed the center line against him, and Oswald advanced with a 5.92/246.77. John Force also crossed the centerline against him in the second round, and once again, Mark advanced, this time at 5.84/252.59. This did not happen again in the semifinal, as eventual winner Tom McEwen laid a straight as an arrow 5.85/236 on him to beat the Firebird's 5.94/251.81. Another win finally came at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.65/259.66 (speed was a new track record). He continued to run strong through eliminations, and in the semifinal, his 5.76/255.17 beat Force's 5.84/253. The only problem was, Bernstein won his semifinal race with a 5.72/255, giving him lane choice in the final. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes had to be given a lot of credit in this win as he didn't dial in too much power and smoke the tires. Oswald won the final with a 5.76/255.76 over Kenny's 5.80/250. The following week (June 22), he also won the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.84/247.25. Larry Gould's 6.67/212 fell to his 5.89/252.80 in the opening round, and Mark reset both ends of the track record in the semifinal with a 5.77/254.95 that beat Paul Smith's 6.12/222 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced McEwen in the final, and there was no stopping the "Candies and Hughes" car on this day as Mark's 5.80/254.95 easily took the win over Tom's off-pace 6.19/176. At the end of June, the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.69/260.25 got the pole, but Mark and Brad Tuttle fried the tires in the opening round. Brad's 6.59/251 came out on top over Oswald's 6.61/251. It was probably the best race to watch of round one. The two "beer cars then met again in the final at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. They qualified one and two, with Bernstein's 5.81/256 getting the pole over Oswald's 5.87/245.90. Mark ran an easy 6.03/239.36 to advance in round one, when Doc Halladay broke. In the semifinal, he stepped it up to a 5.91/249 to beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch. Bernstein had the edge in performance at this event, and it stayed true in the final where his 5.87/253 got the victory over Mark's 5.99/238.09 runner-up effort. Photo from Indy 1986. Mark also ran 265 at IHRA Bristol and won the 1986 IHRA championship. He also ran 5.619 at the 1986 Chiefs at Ennis. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Cool rear spoiler. Oswald, smoking the tires, also beat Bernstein wire-to-wire in the final of the '86 Mile-Highs, a hell of a race on YouTube. Bernstein didn't smoke 'em, and Oswald still beat him. - Joe Moore |

Notes: The '71 Pinto was the team car to a '71 Mach 1 driven by Henry Harrison. With trick titanium Woody chassis, the cars were somewhat lighter. Although they started with Ford motors, both ended up with Hemis early in the year. Harrison qualified the Mach 1 low at '71 Indy (6.54), but Pulde eventually made the final while running 6.80s, losing to the Ace as the Pinto went up in flames. (Did Dale run a 6.7 against a fouling Dick Rosberg in round two? All his other runs were in the 6.80s, including a 6.819 in qualifying). In '72, the Pinto was painted red, and the Mach 1 was replaced by a blue Vega. | Pinto ran 223 at Minneapolis 71. - Dale Pulde, 7/3/15 | Mickey Thompson believed that the car's body should match the engine underneath. So, when the '71 season started, both his cars were using the Boss 429 engine. Of course, the motor used M/T rods and pistons. Howards supplied the cam. A Lenco two-speed fed the power back to Quick-change rear end designed and built by Mickey Thompson. The Pinto was unusual as it used a titanium chassis. In January, the Pinto was still using the Boss 429 engine at the Lions AHRA Grand American race. Dale qualified the car #2 among the "seeded" machines. But in the first round, Dale got out of shape and crossed the centerline, handing the win to Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." The car failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Pulde did qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Bob Harris in the first round, with a 7.79, but a second-round 7.65/186.72 lost to Dick Rosberg's 7.36/191 in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro. At the Bakersfield March Meet, the team took an early loss when Dave Condit, driving the "L. A. Hooker," beat Dale in the opening round. Shortly after this, Pulde was at OCIR for an eight-car show. He qualified #5 and faced Condit again in the first round, with the same results: his 7.20/206.89 lost to Condit's 6.87/216. The Boss 429 powered car was able to get a win when Pulde drove it to victory over an eight-car field at Lions on March 20. A first-round 7.02/205.47 got around a sideways Gene Conway, and in the semifinals, Pulde had to rerun Conway after he got reinstated on the "break rule." Once again, Pulde led him down the track, this time running 7.06/208.33 (Top Speed) over Gene's 7.12. He faced the always tough Dave Beebe driving Nelson Carter's "Super Chief" in the final. Dale's times in eliminations were two tenths better than Beebe had been running, but in the final, both ran 7.26 (Dale at 206.89), with the M/T car getting the win. On April 18, Dale was at West Palm Beach for the Pro-Am Championships, AHRA's third Grand American race. Dale ran 7.85 in qualifying, and he even managed to beat Gene Snow in the second round, where they both ran 7.29. But in the semifinals, his 7.53 lost to eventual winner Art Higginbotham's 6.94. Early in May, Dale was at York for the Super Stock Magazine Championships. A quick-leaving 7.34 beat Conway's 7.23 in the first round, but he got out of shape in round two and shut down to 11.67 in a loss to Tim Kushi's 7.20. The car was having trouble just qualifying for the shows. Even with the win, the car was not up to speed, and shortly after this, a Hemi took the place of the Boss 429. |

Notes: Woody Gilmore chassis and Don Kirby body. The 6.44 was a Maple Grove track record set in June. Ran 6.57 at Gainesville, 6.67 at Columbus, 6.60 at Englishtown. Al debuted the "Black Magic" Vega at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. It created quite a stir as it was awarded the "Best Appearing Car" and the crew was awarded "Best Appearing Crew." The car could run as well as Segrini proved when he ran 6.77 to qualify #7. He improved to 6.56 in his first-round win over Gene Snow, but in the second round against Don Schumacher, the car went into a wheelstand and Al shut off. He was at Charlotte Speedway on March 31 for the IHRA Southern Nationals. Al qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show on the 1/8 mile track with a 5.05. He set Low ET with a 4.41/163.93 to win in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Kenny Safford driving the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he qualified #2 with a 6.69/201.34 behind Ron Colson's 6.62/214.79 in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He did reach the final at Englishtown's Super Sunday race in May, but he lost to Raymond Beadle. At the NHRA Springnationals, he just made the show qualifying in the #15 spot. He advanced past round one when Leroy Goldstein shut off in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. A second round 6.67/209.79 lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.56/207. The following week (June 16), Segrini was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There, he qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.56. He soloed to a 6.48/216.34 in round one, when Frank Oglesby was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In the second round, his 6.45/221.13 covered Bob Parmer's 6.59/219. He picked up to 6.38 in the semifinals to beat Bill Leavitt. This put him into the final against Billy Meyer. A final round 6.43/228.42 (Top Speed and a new track record) finished runner-up to Meyer's 6.34/223. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 22. Al qualified #2 in the eight-car show behind Ivanof. He beat Tom Prock in round one, with a 6.54, and he advanced easily in the semifinals. His final round opponent was Jimmy King in the "King and Marshall" Satellite. Segrini set Low ET with a track record 6.44 at 221.67 (Top Speed) in the final to win over King's 6.62/201. |

Notes: Won Division 2 title in 1973. He flipped at Suffolk, Virginia. | This is a former Gene Snow, Logghe Brothers built car that was sold to owner Fred Wells in the Winter of 1972/73. After repainting and lettering, it made its first appearance as the "Sir Wells" Charger at the 1973 Gatornationals. Paul missed the qualified show but was the first alternate, running 6.61/209.30. He was inserted into the field after Butch Maas, who qualified 7th, had a bad fire in the Mickey Thompson Grand-Am and couldn't return for eliminations. Paul lost to Gene Snow in that first-round pairing when his up-in-smoke 7.24/193.96 pass was no match for the Snowman's 6.75/209.30 run. - Tom Nagy | Ran 6.68 at Suffolk. - Danny White | 211.25 at Miami-Hollywood 7/29/73 | Best speed was on a 6.626/220.04 DNQ effort at NHRA Indy. |

Notes: John's little Arrow kept getting stronger and stronger as the year went on. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with an 8.49/161.00. He beat Joe Anderson's 8.64/154 in the first round, with an 8.65/160.14, but an 8.55/160.14 in round two lost to Pat Musi's 8.45/160. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with an 8.60. In the first round, he lost to Don Nicholson's Boss 429 powered Mustang. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but his 8.68/157.61 qualified #13 for the NHRA Springnationals. An off-pace 8.72/157.34 lost to Andy Mannarino's 8.57/154. The Mopar fans were starting to notice Hagen at Englishtown, where the Arrow set Top Speed at 161.57 in qualifying. His 8.51 time gave him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, an 8.59/161.00 beat Steve Taylor's 8.72/152, but another 8.59/159.85 in round two lost to a quick-leaving Frank Iaconio, who won with an 8.65. A week later (July 26), he was at Brainerd for the fifth NHRA Western Regional event. Hagen made his way to the final by beating Bill Prince with an 8.58/158.73, and a semifinal 8.55/161.87 took out Larry Peternel. In the final, he faced Lee Shepherd, and John sped to an 8.60/162.45 (Top Speed) but lost to Shepherd's 8.55/157. He was disappointed at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 8.51/161.29 best was good for the first alternate. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. An 8.53/157.89 qualified #4 in the eight-car field and an 8.51 in the first round, beat Peternel. In the semifinals, he improved to 8.43, but it wasn't enough to beat Shepherd's 8.41. He was at Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships that featured a "Mountain Motor" Pro Stock show, but his little engine could not compete against the huge engines. He did run 8.49 and 8.51. At Indy, he set Top Speed for the NHRA US Nationals at 163.63. He qualified #5 with an 8.47/161.87 and lasted until the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 8.44 nipped his 8.46. It was after this that the car really came alive. He went to Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals, where he qualified #2 with an 8.35/164.83 (Top Speed). An even better 8.33/164.83 in round one beat Mark Yuill's 8.62/155. In round two, his 8.42/161.57 advanced when Mannarino fouled, and in the semifinals, he fouled away an 8.47/161.29 against Dave Hutchens' 8.50/144. Then came the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Once again, he qualified #2 with an 8.330/165.13. The speed was a new NHRA record. John beat Musi's 8.47/157 in the first round, with an 8.43/164.23. A round two 8.44/163.33 advanced when Don Coonce fouled. In the semifinals, he beat Yuill's 8.46/159 with an 8.42/164.53. The only trouble was, while Hagen was flying in the speed department, Shepherd was the quickest with an 8.27 in qualifying and an 8.37 semifinal win. John picked it back up to an 8.39/164.23 in the final, but he still lost to Lee's 8.35/161. It was still a great showing, and with the new 500 cubic inch rules going into effect for '82, he was expected to do well in the new season. He ended up finishing seventh in the season-long NHRA points chase. John also ran 164.77 at Brainerd WCS 7/81. He was the fastest NHRA Pro Stock car before the switch to 500 cubic inch engines. Notes: Also, qualified at 9.534/144.23 at Tulsa PRA 8/72, and ran 9.46 during eliminations at that race. 1972 NHRA National Pro Stock Top Speed Record 145.86 (from Butch's website). 9.44/145.63 low qualifier at Lions Last Drag Race. 1972 NHRA Pro Stock Division 7 Champion. 1972 Drag News Pro Stock Driver of the Year. 1972 Popular Hot Rod Meet Champion. 1972 Bakersfield March Meet Champion. 1972 NHRA National Pro Stock Top Speed Record 145.86. 1972 OCIR All-Pro Championship Series. 1972 AHRA World Champion Fremont, California. 1972 AHRA Winter Nationals Pro Stock Champion at Phoenix Arizona. 1972 Bonneville World Championship Series Pro Stock Champion. 1972 Sacramento California World Championship Series Pro Stock Champion. 1972 OCIR Pro Stock Match Race Showdown winner. 1972 Las Vegas World Championship Series Pro Stock Champion. Won final event of the year in 1972 over Larry Huff at OCIR All Pro Series on 12/31/72 with a 9.41/145.86. | Leal was tough to beat in '72. Although he didn't win any NHRA National events, he won everywhere else. He started the season by winning the OCIR All-Pro Opener. On the way to the final, he reset the track mph record to 146.10. A 9.56/144.65 in the final beat Bob Lambeck. He followed that up by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline. There, he qualified #2 with a 9.62 just behind Don Nicholson's 9.60. "Dyno's" Maverick went out in the first round, with no oil pressure and Leal took over as the favorite. A first-round 9.61 beat Barrie Poole and in round two, he took out Reid Whisnant with a 9.57 (Low ET). He soloed in the semifinals and in the final, he was up against Bill Bagshaw. A 9.66/143.08 got the victory over Bagshaw's 9.75/141. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, he set Low ET and Top Speed in the final while beating John Petrie with a 9.58/144.00. On January 28, he was at Lions for the Grand Premiere race. His 9.54 qualified #1 and held for Low ET. Once again, he reached the final. There he ran Nicholson. Leal was late and Don left on time, recording a 9.59/142 for the win while Butch's 9.57/143.54 got him the runner-up spot. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field and Leal qualified #2. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the second round with a 9.58/144.69 over Mike Fons. But in round three, he lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Arlen Vanke a solo into the semifinals. The following week (February 13), he was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 9.58. Steady 9.7s in eliminations got him another win. A first-round 9.71 beat Lambeck while a semifinal 9.70/143.76 beat Bagshaw's 9.75/141. His final round opponent was Dick Landy. The two had a close race with Leal's 9.71/142.85 getting the win over Landy's 9.73/140. This was a pretty impressive track record considering it was only February. The winning continued in March when he won the Las Vegas National Open. He set Low ET and Top Speed as well. A final round 9.94 beat Don Lorentzen's Camaro. Then Butch went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Of course, he won again. In the semifinals, his track record 9.69 at 142.40 (Top Speed) beat Landy. In the final, Lambeck fouled against him and Leal won with a 9.72/141.95. His next stop was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.56, but he got quicker as the race progressed. A first-round 9.44/146.34 (Top Speed) beat Bob Anderson while in round two, a 9.60/141.73 took out Henry Ponzo. He had a tough race in the semifinals against Ken Dondero driving "Dyno's" Cammer-powered Maverick. Leal set Low ET with a track record 9.40/146.10 to beat Dondero's hard-charging 9.46/145. After that, you would think he would go on and win over Lambeck in the final. Not so, Leal fouled and Bob went on to win with a 9.52/142. He was at Gainesville the following week (March 19), for the NHRA Gatornationals. Butch qualified an uncharacteristic #7 in the sixteen-car show with a 9.64. Even more uncharacteristic was his first-round loss to Melvin Yow when he missed a shift and slowed to 14.59. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 25 and Leal set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.64. But once again, he missed a shift, this time in the semifinals against Ken Van Cleave. Even with the loss, Leal had racked up enough points to win the OCIR All-Pro Pro Stock championship. He was runner-up to Bagshaw at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Irwindale. Won the last race of 1972 over Larry Huff at OCIR on 12/31/72 with a 9.41/145.86 in the 1972 car. |

Notes: In 1973, Leon Groom decided to sell Marvin his share of the team and Marvin set out on his own, debuting the car at the IHRA All American event in Bristol, TN, where he was runner up. Due to his commitment to running his television repair business, Marvin was participating on a strictly part-time basis and with his racing career limited to competing locally in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and occasionally, Louisiana. He also ran 6.42 at Dallas International Raceway. Bret Kepner - 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Top Fuel Eliminator, Round 2. Oklahoma City's Marvin Graham (near lane) thrashed to repair front end damage from flying off the end of the track while defeating Ron Martin in Round 1. Graham met Don Garlits in Round 2, but lost on a holeshot, 6.521/216 to Garlits' 6.530/221! 973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Top Fuel Eliminator, Qualifying. Marvin Graham from Oklahoma City still fifty-six weeks from being named "Who?", fifth qualifier at 6.52/213 |

Notes: Sam was driving Fred Forkner's car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Thirty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Miller qualified #5. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.38/223.77 lost to the meet's eventual winner Dale Funk's 6.25/216. The following weekend (June 22), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division One race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 6.48/190.67 defeated Roger Toth's quicker, but later 6.46/215 in the "Hemi-Hunter." In the semifinal, Hank Endres' 6.59/209 fell to Miller's 6.43/217.38. Sam broke, and Dale Thierer soloed for the victory in the final. |

Notes: This was probably Tony's best season behind the wheel of a Top Fuel Dragster. He started the season by qualifying #1 with a 6.82 at the first OCIR All-Pro on Jan 4. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 6.90/219.51 in the first round, against Joe Lee. At the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18, he lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.75/216 in the first round, with a 6.96/209.79. He got back in on the break rule when Kelly Brown broke, but he fouled opposite Norm Wilcox. He was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 1. A 6.93 qualified #14 in the 32 car field. He advanced steadily towards the finals, getting a couple of easy runs along the way. In the third round, he ran a 7.63 when Steve Carbone broke just off the line and in the semifinal, Jim Davis fouled against him. He lost to Larry Dixon's 6.86 in the final. Tony failed to qualify at the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, but Kelly Brown was unable to run so Nancy took his place in the field. He ran a strong 6.74/218.97 in the first round, over low qualifier Ron Hampshire's 6.77/229. A broken motor kept him from running Gary Cochran in the semis. Then came his big win of '70 at Famoso for the March Meet. 75 cars showed to qualify for a spot in the 32 car field. Tony's 6.93 qualified #10. Dwight Salisbury fouled against him in the opening round and he won a close second round race against Glenn. Both ran 6.87, Tony at 214.78 and Glenn at 215. In the third round, he beat James Warren's 7.17/209 with a 7.03/213.76. In the semifinals, he ran his best time of the event, a 6.81/215.30 over Jim Davis' 7.13/201. He won the final with a 7.09/159.57 when Harry Hibler fouled. He ran an eight-car show at Irwindale on April 11. He qualified #6, but fouled against Ron Hampshire in the first round. On June 21 he won the third NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City Raceway. He qualified #1 with a track record 6.91 then beat Jimmy Duppstadt and advanced over a broken Raymond Beadle in the semifinal. In the final, Tony only needed a 7.12/208.80 to win at opponent Buddy Cortines lost fire on the line. He then raced at the second NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. 40 cars showed up for the 16 available spots and Nancy was the quickest in qualifying with a 6.55 (Low ET). He advanced past the first-round with a 6.70 when Jim Dunn lost a clutch, but in the second round, he went up in smoke against Dave Uyehara. Tony made a good account of himself on July 25 at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He ran a first-round 6.86/187.89 over Uyehara's 7.03/222, and a second round 6.75/217.91 beat Frank Prock's 6.89/211. In the third round (32 car field), he beat Glenn's 6.94/211 with a 6.82/215.31. He took a big win in the semifinal, beating a fouling Don Prudhomme with Low ET of the meet, a 6.69/220.04. Unfortunately, he fouled in the final against Steve Carbone in Mike Kuhl's car. He set Low ET at the fourth NHRA Division 7 race at Bonneville on August 23 with a 6.82, but lost to Uyehara in the first round. Won OKC WCS race | Best NHRA national event times of 6.820/214.28. |
