Notes: Butch qualified #2 at OCIR on March 15 for an eight-car show with an 8.11/194.80. He slowed to 9.18/176.12 in the opening round, but that was more than enough to beat the "Beaverhunter" who had gotten into the show as an alternate. In the semifinal, he fouled away an 8.71/182 against Chuck Horchar, who advanced with an 8.85/147.

Notes: Long Nose 85/86. The first lock-up clutch at Indy resulted in best-ever times of 5.509 at 271.41, which were not backed up for records. Hit the first 5.40s with a 5.425 low qualifier at the Ennis Chiefs, which was not backed up as a record. However, a 5.543 at Ennis was backed up as the new record. Ran 266.66 and 265.17 at 1986 Chiefs. | This was Kenny's last year with the Tempo body and probably one of, if not his best season. At Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing, Kenny ran a track record 5.66 at 254.95 to qualify first. He beat Ed McCulloch in round one, with a 5.73/244.56, but in the semifinals, his 5.78/217.91 lost to John Force's 5.85/250. The NHRA season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.60 (Low ET) at 250.00 and continued to run 5.60's in the first two rounds over Rick Johnson (5.60/246.57) and John Martin (5.60/252.80). But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Tim Grose who ran a 5.61 for the win. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a track record 5.59 at 261.17. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover's 5.76/254 with a 5.64/255.24. In round two, a 5.66/256.99 beat Force's 5.91/212, but he lost to a holeshot by Tom McEwen in the semifinals, when Tom's 5.67/256 beat Kenny's 5.65/255.82. He was runner-up to Paul Smith at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham, and once again, he walked off with Low ET honors with a 5.58. In April at the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 5.67/260.86 (Low ET and Top Speed) but then suffered a rare first-round loss. He got out qualified for the first time that year at the NHRA Cajun Nationals when Force ran 5.66 (Low ET) while Kenny had to settle for the second position with a 5.69/253.73. But for the second race in a row, he lost in the first round. This time his 5.88/237.52 lost to Johnny West's 5.83/252 in the "Hawaiian." At Bristol, he got another runner-up finish at the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET at 5.57, but he blew an engine letting Grose's 5.87/231 get the victory in the final. Another runner-up finish followed at the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.65/254.02 qualified #2 behind Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. And that's how they finished. The final saw Oswald's 5.76/255 take the win over the Tempo's 5.80/250.13. It was a strange situation. The "Budweiser King" was probably the most feared car to come up against in competition, yet here it was, the middle of June, and the team hadn't won yet. Well, that all changed with the running of the Super Stock Nationals. While it wasn't a major event, it was still a satisfying win. Kenny qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.62/257.14 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Bruce Larson and Dominic Santucci with times of 5.75/254.95 and 5.72/256.41 before singling for the win with a 5.76/251.39 when West's Daytona broke. Now that the seal was broken, the wins started coming. On June 29, he won the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.71/254.66 but went on to set Low ET at 5.66 and, in the final be beat Force with a 5.69/257.28. The following week (July 6), he won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. A 5.81/256.41 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1, and he beat Smith and Grose with times of 5.95/253.52 and 5.84/252 to meet Oswald in the final. A 5.87/253.52 wrapped up the win. He took his fourth meet in a row at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 behind Oswald with a 5.62/239.48. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.67/254 beat West in round two. Hoover smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and his 5.66/257 got lane choice over Force in the final. Once again, Bernstein prevailed, running 5.65/259.39 for another win. He managed to get into the finals at the next NHRA race, the Mile High Nationals at Denver. Kenny qualified #1 with a 5.84/227.96 and made his way into the final to meet Oswald. It took a Low ET of the meet run by Oswald to keep Bernstein out of the winner's circle again. Mark's 5.81/252 nipped Kenny's close 5.82/247.52. He won the PHR Championships at US 131, Martin, Michigan. A 5.79/247.25 qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field. In the first two rounds, he ran 5.74 and 5.80 while beating Bob Gottschalk and Scott Kalitta. But in the semifinals, he set track records of 5.72/259.36 to beat Grose's 5.94. In the final, he ran Oswald again. But Kenny took the win easily with a 5.77/257.87 when Mark had problems and slowed to a 7.55/120. On August 17, Kenny set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a track record 5.67 at 251.39. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 5.81 against Billy Meyer. The following week (August 24), he was back in the winner's circle at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #2 (behind Oswald) but improved to a meet's best of 5.57/260. In the final, he met and beat Oswald.

Notes: Former Gas Ronda 70 Mustang, significantly modified with driver moved forward and engine aft. The car ran high sixes when all went right, which was rare. - Bill Duke | Dave was at OCIR on May 26 for the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 race. It was a sixteen-car show and his 7.15 qualified #15. He faced Gordon Swearingen in the first round, and Bowman's reverser failed after his burnout. So Gordon got to make a solo into round two with the "Sopwith Camel." Bowman raced in the OCIR Lions Championships in June. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 7.24, but another 7.24/204.08 in the opening round lost to Joe Lee's 6.99/197. Dave was runner-up at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 22. It was a sixteen-car show, and Bowman got a single in the first round. In the second round, he lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.13/196 in the "Mr. Ed" car with a 7.59/163.93. He got back into the show on the "break rule" when Lee's car failed to fire in the semifinal. So once again, Rowe raced Bowman, but this time the Vega won with a 7.20/207.85 over Rowe's 7.30/213. Dave tried hard in the final, but his 7.16/191.89 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.77/217.

Notes: Omer ran at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2. He was the first alternate but got into the 16-car show when Pat Foster's chutes got tangled on a 6.36 Low ET qualifier and went into the sand traps. He made the best of the opportunity. In round one, Omer left on and beat Gordie Bonin in the Pacemaker Vega. Both cars ran 7.10. In round two, Omer ran an excellent 6.62 but got nipped by eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.60. But that made Omer the Low ET of all the losing cars in round two. In the semis, Billy Meyer was late getting to the lanes to face Don Prudhomme, so Lions management reinstated Omer to face the Snake. Prudhomme got the win with a close 6.67 to 6.74 decision.

Notes: In January, Gary started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.98/225.56. He shut off with tire shake in round one, while his opponent, John Force, advanced with a 5.87/244. He was the third alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 5.86/244.29. In April, Densham was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coors Funny Car race. It was a ten-car show, and all cars ran two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Gary's first-round 6.05/239.36 lost to Chris Lane's quicker-leaving 6.07/226. He won his second race with a 6.13/234.98 over Jim Dunn's 6.33. Unfortunately, his ETs were not quick enough to get him into the final. Sacramento also held a similar ten-car show that ran the same way. Gary ran a career-best (to this point) 5.74/252.81 in his first race only to lose to Force's 5.73/254. He won his second race with a 6.10/232 over Wally Giavia. His 5.74 from the first-round advanced him into the final, where he would race Force again. John ran a track record 5.57 at 259 to win over Gary's 5.98/236.85. He ran 6.127/234.31 at NHRA Denver. Gary sold the car to Jim Walton in Australia.

Notes: Mike's Charger used a 118" chassis from Woody Gilmore's Race Car Engineering. It cost him $18,000 to build. Mike failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Irwindale for its Grand Premiere race. He did better at the second All-Pro race at OCIR, where his 6.93 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. But in the first round, he shut down to a 12.83/65.35 loss to Jim Paoli, who advanced with a 6.86/201. His next good showing came at the third OCIR All-Pro, where he ran 6.79 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. An opening round 7.24/141.28 beat Russell Long's troubled 13.87 in the "Pabst" Charger. But Halloran hurt his engine on the run and could not return for the semifinal. He competed at an eight-car show at OCIR on March 10. His 7.13 qualified on the "bump," In round one, he shut down to a 13.72/57.39 loss against eventual winner Roger Garten's 7.01/211 in the "Warhorse." Mike qualified #15 at the final OCIR All-Pro race. His 7.17/175.09 beat Jim Adolph in the "Rat Trap" in the opening round of eliminations. He killed it early against Sush Matsubara in round two, who advanced at 7.49. Irwindale held its big 32-car Coca-Cola Championships on April 21; Halloran was there. Unfortunately, his first-round 7.52/138.24 fell to Tom McEwen's 6.67/217. He was at Irwindale in September for its Back to School Championships. An opening round 6.97/197.36 beat Charlie Wilson, and in round two, his 7.09/209.30 beat a badly out-of-shape Rick Ramsey driving the "Keeling and Clayton" Pinto. But in the semifinals, Halloran slowed to 7.49/175.09 in a loss to Gerry Glenn's 7.03/201. - Ron Howard

Notes: Who had the strongest Donovan-powered Funny Car in '75? It had to be a toss-up between Leavitt and John Lombardo. Bill was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 6.66 but lost to Billy Meyer driving Gene Snow's Vega in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his low qualifying 6.21 held for Low ET. He made it into the semifinals before he smoked the tires to a 6.72 that lost to Mike Miller's 6.44 in the "Green Elephant." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bill qualified #14 with a 6.57. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.59/159 that lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.73/211 in the "Blue Max." Shortly after this, he was at the Englishtown Opener, where he got crossed-up against Tom Prock in the first round, and shut off. In April, he was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #4 but failed to reach the finals. His next stop was at the Cecil County National Open. He made it to the final by beating Tom Raley (George of the Jungle) in the first round, and running an easy single in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Joe Jacono, and Leavitt's troubled 9.50 got the runner-up spot to Jacono's 6.86. Back at Maple Grove for the fifth annual Dutch Classic, Bill went into a huge wheelstand against Al Segrini in the first round, and shut down. Leavitt was at Atco for the CARS Magazine Meet in May. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, he beat Jacono's 7.15/213 with a 7.12/204.08. In the semifinals, his Mustang broke and coasted to a 10.27/86 loss to Segrini's 6.55/200. In June, he went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he failed to qualify for the show. Shortly after that, he beat Jacono in the final to win the New England Funny Car Championships. He qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 6.75/183, and in round one, his 6.46/205.47 beat Jacono. A semifinal 6.45/205.94 beat Jimmy King's 7.10/197 and moved him into the final. Jacono was to be his final round opponent as he had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" when Dodger Glenn had his throttle stick open in the first round, and ended up smoking the pistons in the "Frantic Ford." Bill really picked up in the final, running a track record 6.28 at 212.26 to claim the victory over Joe's 6.77/182. Later in the month, he went to Suffolk, where he reset the track record to 6.18. Near the end of June, he was back in New England for a Wednesday night race. While he didn't win or reach the final, he was right in the thick of things, running 6.46/197. The month of July didn't start out the greatest for Leavitt as he went up to Canada for the Gold Cup Championships held at Cayuga and lost all three of his races. All the cars were to make three passes, and on Leavitt's first race, his 6.62/215.82 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.59/221. In his second race, he ran 6.84/194.80, but Don Prudhomme beat him to the finish line with a 6.76/205. For the last race, he faced Tommy Grove, but the "Quickie Too" broke on the line. He qualified #10 with a 6.50/216.34 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he lost fire on the line in the first round, giving Gary Burgin a single into round two. Leavitt won the Connecticut Summer Funny Car Championships. He had a little luck along the way. An opening round 6.63/210.77 beat Jacono's 6.91/193, but in the semifinals, his 7.08/215.31 lost to Segrini's 6.91/166. These two would race again in the final when Kosty Ivanof broke after winning his semifinal race. Bill returned via the "break rule." He beat Segrini's 6.63/209 in the "Black Magic" Vega with a 6.49/215.82. Bill used the same old 1971 Blair chassis with a new body.

Notes: At the 1973 NHRA Grandnationals, Frank qualified 3rd at 6.73 and made it to the final against Dale Emery. His 6.80/206.42 lost to Dale's 6.70/219.50. Best NHRA times were the 6.730/206.42 at Sanair. DNQ at Indy at 7.040/203.16. Did not run at the Summers, which is interesting.

Notes: Confirmed 262.08 at Ennis at first nitro match race at the track (before the national event) August 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Billy started the '86 season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.75/241.28. He was a little late out of the gate in the first round, as his 5.85/242.58 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.91/241 in Joe Pisano's Daytona. He attended an eight-car show at Atlanta where he qualified #3 with a 6.20/210.28. He shut off against Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Meyer qualified #3 with a 5.76/251.11. He beat Jim Head in the first round, before smoking the tires and losing to Tom McEwen in round two. Firebird raceway hosted the Coor's Funny Car race in April and Billy had tire-smoking problems on both his runs; he lost to John Force and Johnny West with times of 12.62 and 6.38/205.01. We needless to say, he failed to make it to the finals. On April 20 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he ran 5.75/252.10 to qualify #3. He beat Tom Hoover before smoking the tires to a 6.12/244.16 loss to Ed McCulloch who also had traction problems at 6.02/242. In May, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. He ran 5.84/252.80 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He stepped up to a 5.77/250 in the first round, to beat Rodney Flournoy's 6.46 Firebird, but in round two, a 5.78/253.52 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.76/245. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.75/256.99 qualified #4. In round one, he beat Paul Smith's 5.99/230 with a 5.76/253.66. A second round 5.89/241.80 advanced when Head got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 5.86/245.40 beat Johnny West's 5.94/244 in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against McEwen. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost with an 8.37/94.59 while the "Goose" took the victory with a 5.78/249. Meyer qualified #5 with a 5.83/242.65 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. At the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.84/240.64 qualified #5 for the show. In the first round, Billy's ailing 9.22/91.53 advanced when Bruce Larson smoked the tires and shut off. In the second round, he fouled away a 5.81 and lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Billy qualified #4 with a 5.66/255.82. He beat Head in the first round, but in the second round the Mustang broke on the line giving Hoover a free ride into the semifinals. He lost early at the NHRA Mile High Nationals as well, after qualifying #6 with a 5.91/191.53. Meyer qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/245.23. It was dreaded because if you qualified in that spot, you faced the number one qualifier in your first race. That's exactly what Billy did, but he lucked out when low qualifier Bernstein fouled away a 5.81 while Meyer motored into the second round with a 6.12/180.00. In the second round, he ran a 5.96/238.09 that lost to Hoover's 5.91/256.
