Notes: New Don Hardy car was built to be Bob Glidden's. | At the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto Memorial in April, Kinnett won the event and set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.65/157.34. It was a short field as only five cars qualified for the available eight spots. Jim ran his 8.65/157 in the first round, while beating Buddy Shanklin. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" single and ran another 8.65 at 156.79. In the final, he beat Morris Johnson's 8.99/151 with an 8.78/153.06. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car field with an 8.58/158.73. An 8.67/157.34 in the first round, lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.50/157. Best NHRA national event times were Englishtown at 8.560 and Baton Rouge at 158.73.

Notes: Loehr was the top qualified Ford at the NHRA Winternationals when he ran a 10.36/133.92 to qualify #12. He lost early in eliminations. On February 15 for the NHRA Gatornationals, he again led the Ford runners with a 10.12 that qualified #9. In the first round, he repeated that number but lost to low qualifier Ronnie Sox's 9.94. Loehr was at Donnybrook International on July 26 for the fourth NHRA Division Five race. In the opening round, his 10.56/132.93 beat Bill Hielscher. In the semifinal, his 10.45/132.72 fell to Dick Oldfield's 10.11/136. Ran 10.080/136.98 at Indy to qualify #13. Steve Hubler surprised him in round one, with a 10.22 to 10.17 holeshot upset.

Notes: The best NHRA times were 9.290/147.29 in a first-round loss to Reid Whisnant's 9.21 at the 1973 Gatornationals. Ronnie was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 9.23 qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, he got a solo run when Harold Clark blew an engine on his burnout. Lyles ran 9.44/145.86 to advance. A second-round 9.28/146.57 beat Roy Hill's 9.37/141, but in the semifinal, he fouled on a 9.22 run against eventual winner Don Carlton, who ran 8.99. Shortly after that, Lyles was at Maple Grove for its annual Dutch Classic race. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 9.40, and in round one, his 9.25/146.34 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, his opponent, Bill Lawton, fouled. But shortly after leaving the line, a rod let go in the Duster, and he could not run in the final. He was back at Maple Grove for the USRT event. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 9.41/144.69 fell to Herb McCandless' 9.39/146. He then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. Things went much better at Blaney for the third NHRA Division Two race. He first ran 9.45/145.16 to beat Jim Rodriquez. A second-round 9.47/144 took out William Paris, and a 9.41/144.23 stopped Oscar Roberts in the semifinal. He lined up against Melvin Yow in the final. Yow's transmission let go, so Lyles' 9.41/144.92 scored the victory.

Notes: Herb ran two NHRA national events this year. He qualified #23 at Englishtown at 9.394/146.58, but he lost a strange round one to Dyno Don. Nicholson broke on the line, but McCandless ran off the track and was disqualified. A 9.284/147.78 at the Indy Nationals put him 18th. He lost round one to Wayne Gapp, 9.08/149 to 9.28/147.54. Also ran 9.21/148.71 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge. In July, Herb was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the third USRT race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he made an easy pass to advance after "Dyno Don" Nicholson fouled away a 9.25/147. Herb had a really close race against Dick Landy in round two that saw his 9.27 nip Landy's 9.28 to the stripe. He improved to 9.21 in the semifinal to defeat Don Carlton's 9.33. His final-round opponent was Dave Stricker, who had driven his Vega to 9.22 to win his semifinal race. The final was expected to be close, and it was. But Dave caught a great light and held on to take a 9.22/145 victory over McCandless' quicker and faster,9.19/149.00. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, reviewed above. On August 8, he was back at Englishtown for the USRT race. McCandless ran really well. He started the day off by running 9.19/146.10 to beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.60/145. He set Low ET in round two with a 9.12/148.27 that took out Bruce Larson's 9.46/144. He continued to mop out the Vega's in the semifinal, where his second 9.12 run beat Strickler's 9.27/144. He had a surprising finalist in the form of Wally Booth's Hornet. Wally had run as well as 9.22 in eliminations, so he had to take a gamble on the tree in the final. Unfortunately for him, it came up red, and Herb motored to 9.13/148.02 for the victory. At Tulsa, for the AHRA National Challenge, his 9.21 qualified #8 in the 32 car field. He ran 9.24/148 in the opening round to beat Lynn Harrison's 9.63/141. Les Swearingen's Vega broke in round two, so McCandless ran 9.29/148 to advance. In round three, he came up against the eventual winner Bill Jenkins. Bill booted it to a 9.14/149 to defeat McCandless' 9.31/146.

Notes: Shay was at Phoenix on January 25 for the Winter Classic. She qualified #1, but her 9.26/147.54 in the opening round fell to eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 8.87/153. An 8.994/151.51 at the Pomona Winternationals was the first eight-second run recorded by a woman. Shay qualified #13 but lost to Richie Zul in round one, 8.90/151 to 9.12/150. That was her last NHRA national event of the year. Shay also ran 8.99/150 at NHRA D4 LaPlace LA in march. Was that 8.99 quicker than the 8.994 at Pomona? RH | Shay finished second in Division 4 Pro Stock points (behind only Shelby Jester) in 1976. Did she retire in 76 or 77?

Notes: Pontiac had a strong performance image in the sixties. I’m sure a lot of Pontiac lovers missed having a car to root for in the Pro Stock wars of the early seventies. Sure, there were Pontiac Pro Stockers before this one. But none made the impact that this one did. Early in '73, Bert actually had to send NHRA brochures for the Pontiac Astre to prove to them such a car existed. The car was marketed in Canada. Once NHRA gave Straus the OK, construction started. The car was completed in time for the NHRA Summernationals, but new car bugs kept the car from making the show. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Bert qualified the car #9 in the sixteen-car field. He lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Butch Leal in the first round. His 9.37/143.54 lost to the "California Flash's" 9.17/150. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, a 9.269/146.10 qualified #16 for the 32 car show. An opening round 9.33 beat previous year's winner Ray Allen at 9.42. In round two he improved to 9.230/146.57 to send Arlen Vanke's 9.38 packing. But in round three, Bert’s 9.27/146.10 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.20/150.

Notes: AKA Northwest Thunder. Ken eventually sold the car to Billy Stepp. | Ken was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 in the 32 car field with a 9.57/146.34. A first-round 9.85 was all he needed as his competition broke. In round two, his 9.72 lost to Jack Roush's 9.63. He ran well at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, where he made it into the semifinals before losing to the eventual winner Dick Landy. A week later(March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ken qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 9.37, but an off pace 10.21 lost to Mike Fons' 9.37 in the opening round. He stayed busy, as the following week, he was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. He qualified #12 for the sixteen-car show, but he lost to Larry Huff in the opening round.

Notes: Yow started the '73 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 and, in the first round, beat Barrie Poole's Pinto with a 9.38. In round two, a 9.34 took out Roy Hill's Duster, and in the semifinals, he ran 9.37 to beat Wayne Gapp's ailing Pinto. That set him up to meet Don Nicholson in another Pinto in the final. Unfortunately, Yow's Dodge broke and slowed to a 10.86/88.66 for the runner-up finish to "Dyno Don's" 9.50/141. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Melvin ran 9.44/145.39 to qualify #4 again. A breaking 9.76 in the first round, beat Larry Huff's Challenger at 9.96, but he could not repair in time for round two. Melvin was at National Trail on April 8 for an eight-car show. All cars ran three rounds. He soloed in the first round with a 9.17 (Low ET) at 148.51. He then lost to Bill Jenkins in the next two races with his 9.36/144.46 and 9.33/148.51, losing to the "Grump's" 9.25/149 and 9.18/150. He then came back out later and ran another 9.17 at 149. On June 2, Yow was at Blaney for the third NHRA Division Two race. It was supposed to be a sixteen-car show, but the field was too short. In the first round, Melvin's 9.33 beat Bo Moxley's 10.14. He got an easy solo in round two before setting a 9.25 track record in the semifinal while beating Max Hurley. His final-round opponent was Ronnie Lyles, and Yow had some bad luck as his transmission broke, and he had to watch Lyles motor to a 9.41 for the win. The following week(June 10), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The Mopars were strong as they took five of the first eight spots for the sixteen-car field. Yow's 9.43/147.29 got him the #7 spot. An opening round 9.51/148.27 beat Hill's 9.77/140, and he beat another fellow Mopar driver in round two, where his 9.53/144.92 stopped Ken Van Cleave's 10.09/122. Eventual winner Don Carlton ran 9.38/147 in the semifinal to defeat Yow's off-pace, 11.65. His next stop was Milan Dragway for the third NHRA Division Three race. He didn't hang around long as eventual winner Gapp beat him in round one. He really ran well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32 car field, and his 9.21 qualified #5. He had the second quickest Mopar behind Butch Leal. A 9.23/151.26 in the opening round took out William Parris. In round two, he dropped Hill's 9.36/144 with a 9.18/150.50. In round three, Yow picked it up to 9.14 to defeat Ray Allen's 9.30. But the two quickest Mopars met in the semifinal, and Leal's 9.09/151 got the better of Melvin's 9.15/151. The "Billy the Kid" car was the quickest Mopar in qualifying for the sixteen-car field at the Super Stock Nationals. His 9.18/149.75 got the #4 spot in the show. Richie Zul fouled against him in round one, and he advanced with a 9.26/149.25. Unfortunately, in the next round, he fouled away a 9.22/148.76 while his opponent, Dave Strickler, went into the semifinal with a 9.36/143. The next day(July 29), he was at Connecticut for an eight-car show that had all cars run three rounds. The cars were all NHRA legal. In Yow's first race, his 9.20/148.76 beat Bob Riffle's 9.23/149. He could not race his second race, so Lyles filled in. In the third race, he came back out and ran 9.22/149 to top Paul Blevins' 9.28/146. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Surprisingly, he "only" qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field, and he was replaced in the field by Bob Judd after the Dart had broken. Shortly after that, Atco held an eight-car show. Yow didn't have the best day there as he lost both his races. In his first race, his 9.18/149.50 fell to Bill Jenkins' 9.04/151, and in his second, a 9.29/148.02 lost to Mike Fons' 9.05/151. The AHRA National Challenge race was another 32 car affair. Yow's 9.11/151.26 qualified #3 behind Leal and Gapp. in the opening round, his 9.14/148 defeated John Hagen's 9.47, and he watched Ronnie Sox foul against him in round two, so he eased it to a 9.44/103 to advance. In the third round, his 9.24/141 lost to Nicholson's 9.18/148. Ran 9.08/148, 9.11, and 9.17 in winning three straight against Jenkins at Maple Grove on 4/08/73 (4/13/73 National Dragster). Also 9.09 at NHRA Indianapolis 73 where he qualified 6th 9.162/150.25 and ran 9.052/151.51 in limitations, and 9.08 at Maple Grove 4/08/73. Melvin also ran 151.26 at PRA Tulsa.

Notes: Toured with two spare engines. Unique at the time. In September, Yowell was supposed to have a best of three match race against Bill Jenkins' car at Suffolk. But since Jenkins' driver, Larry Lombardo, had crashed and totaled their Monza at Indy, the team could not race at Suffolk. So Frank Iaconio took team Jenkins' place. It was no contest as Frank's Monza was NHRA legal and could only run an 8.65/156 best. Meanwhile, Bobby hoofed the Colt to 8.30/163, 8.34/162, and 8.33/163 to easily win the match.
