Notes: The car debuted in 1965 as an A/Gasser, then stepped up to AA/G in '66. Korney fielded the car as an Anglia until mid-1970. In '69, he was runner-up to Ohio George Montgomery in AA/GS Indy class runoffs, marking the end of dominance by a classic gasser-style bodied car in AA/GS. In '71, the Anglia shell was replaced by a Corvette shell and with the Stone, Woods & Cook logo went on tour with K.S. Pittman, Junior Thompson, and a few others, dubbed a traveling blown gas funny car circuit. As of mid-'80s, rumor had it that Korney still had the car, including the Anglia body. As an Anglia, ran 8.50s, as a Vette, 8.30s. | Steve started the '69 season by winning over an eight-car field at OCIR. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.55. In round one, his 9.05/153.84 advanced over Brad Anderson's 9.11/155. In the semifinals, both he and his opponent Ron Zeller ran 8.99 (Steve at 155.97), but the Anglia got the win light. Then in the final, he faced Gary Densham and Korney ran Low ET of eliminations with an 8.77/157.45 to take the victory over Gary's 8.98/156. He was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he ran in the Super Eliminator class. He won his first-round race with a 9.17/155.79, but he lost to Jack Ditmars in round two. On March 15 he was at OCIR for another eight-car show. He qualified #3 with an 8.67 and in the first round, he beat Gary Burgin with an 8.69/158.45. In the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to 10.84 in a loss to Ron Bizio. Lions held another eight-car show on April 26 and Steve qualified #4 with an 8.88. An 8.82/157.61 advanced past round one when Mike Boosin's Corvette failed to fire. In the semifinals, the Anglia broke on its burnout giving Ernie Nicholson a solo into the final. Steve was at OCIR on May 21 for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with an 8.90/150.18, but picked up to an 8.81/155.97 in the first round, while beating Danny Collins' 9.18/152. In the semifinals, he beat Zeller's 8.68/167 with a holeshot 8.84/156.29. He saved his best for the last round where he ran an 8.71/156.25 to win the meet over Ron Bizio who had his fuel pump actually fall off onto the track during their final round run. Another AA/GS show took place at OCIR on July 26. It was hoped to be a sixteen-car show, but only fourteen cars showed. Steve qualified #8 with a 9.00. In the first round, he improved to an 8.72 to beat Steve Thomas. In round two he beat Densham's 8.78 with an 8.66. Gary protested Korney's Anglia and the car was found to be legal, even weighing 100 pounds more than it had to at the 5 lbs. per CID minimum. Steve slept in the semifinal and ran a strong 8.73, but lost to Keith Bush's 8.83. - RH |

Notes: Listed times from Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Jerry started the '86 NHRA season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.589/181.08. A first-round 7.63/176.47 beat Roy Hill's 7.69/179, but in round two he fouled away a 761 in a loss to Nick Nikolis' 7.60. He did the same thing at the Gatornationals; a first-round 7.59/177.86 beat Ken Dondero's 7.69/179, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.61/179.35 against eventual winner Don Campanello who ran 7.63/180 for the win. The next event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta in April. Jerry qualified #8 with a 7.61/180.57. He beat Kenny Delco in the first round, before losing to Butch Leal in round two. It was off to Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. Once again Eckman had no problem qualifying in the top half of the field with a 7.60/182.66 (#6). Unfortunately, he lost to Reid Whisnant in the first round. On June 15 he was at National Trail for the Springnationals where he ran 7.61/179.42 to qualify #8. A first-round 7.70/178.74 beat Campanello's 7.84/176. In round two, he was sharp on the tree turning a 7.69/179.53 to beat Dave Hutchens' quicker 7.66/176. In the semifinal, Jerry's 7.71/179.96 lost to Leal's 7.63/182. The NHRA tour then shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals where Jerry ran 7.64/181.37 to qualify #7. | At the NHRA US Nationals Eckman ran 7.559/185.45 to qualify #10 in the 16 car field. In round 1 Eckman Faced #2 Qualifier Bruce Allen where Eckman's 7.592/181.34 was no match for the eventual Runner Up Allen's 7.492/183.48. |

Notes: A 1970 built Maverick Pro Stock built for NHRA only (somewhat successful car). Won Best Engineered Car award at the 1970 Gatornationals. - Sam Auxier Jr. website | Auxier qualified for NHRA's first Pro Stock race, the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona held on February 1. His 10.49/132.54 held for the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he lost to Bill Bagshaw in the opening round. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 10.40. It took a 10.36 to make the show. On March 8, he was at Aquasco for a best of three match race against Dick Collins. Sam won their first race with a 10.51/132.00, but he fouled in the second race to even up the score. In the deciding race, Auxier won the match with another 10.51 at 130.05. He faced Bill Jenkins for a match race at Atco in early April. The "Grump" won all three on their races as Sam was not having a good day. He fouled in the first race, his 10.50/129.12 lost to Jenkins' 10.21/136 in the second race, and the car broke so he was unable to run Bill in the final race. Bill would have been hard to beat as he ran a solo 9.91/138 to claim the match race victory. Shortly after that, he was at Richmond for the Super Stock Unlimited circuit race. He won the race, running a 10.71/128.67 in the opening round over Tommy Cox. A semifinal 10.50/131.61 stopped Bob Beck's 10.57/127. In the final, he faced Collins and a 10.48/130.63 beat the Camaro's 10.55/132. The following week (April 19), he was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the first round. Sam was at Englishtown on July 5 for a NHRA Pro Stock circuit race. It was an eight-car show and in the opening round, his 10.37/131.57 beat George Weiler. In the semifinals, opponent George Wahlen got out of shape and Sam advanced with a 10.41/130.81. He faced the Camaro of Dick Collins in the final. The two had a good race, but the Camaro's 10.34/133 beat the Maverick's close 10.38/130.62. In the September 18 Drag Times issue, Sam had the car listed for sale with a 427 tunnel port for $6,500. Best NHRA times of 10.405 at Gainesville and 132.54 at Pomona Winters in 1970. |

Notes: The team was most successful in AHRA. Won the 1978 AHRA World Finals. | Here is the race list from 1978. Just as a side note, Shelby said this was the best years of his life. Prior to driving for Claud, he ran Andy White’s team and drove the SHAG Monza for him. He met Claud a few years before 1978 at Fourth of July race in 1976. Claude had the Vega built in 77, but needed a driver. So, he called Shelby and asked him to drive. Unfortunately Shelby has kind of retired from racing. After some talks over the phone, Claud sent him a plane ticket and said to come out and make a few passes. Claud said if he didnt like it, then Shelby could just consider it a paid vacation. That was the beginning a friendship that lasted until Claud’s death in 90. When we talked to Shelby he still considers Claud one of the best men he ever knew and thinks about him daily. It’s just one of those cool racing stories.
Here is the list for 1978. All races we know about are AHRA sanctioned only. Spring Nationals in Tulsa. Lost to Lee Shepherd in the first round. Gateway Nationals in St. Louis. Lost to Lee Shepherd in the finals. AHRA Nationals in San Antonio. Lost to Lee Shepherd in the semifinals with a red light. Ozark Nationals in Springfield, MO. Lost to Don Nicholson in the first round, on a red light. Shelby had Low ET of the meet on that run. Grand Nationals in Cleveland. Beat Don Nicholson in the finals for their first National victory. World Finals in Spokane. Beat Mardy Maltais in the finals. Winning the World Finals race and getting enough points to also capture the World Championship. - Jay Wahrmund (grand daughter's husband) |
