Notes: The Doug's Headers team was true to the Chevy engine for much longer than most. Most of the "loyal" Chevy campaigners had switched to Hemi's long before he would. "Jungle Jim" Liberman switched before the '69 season ended, and both Bruce Larson and Kelly Chadwick jumped into Pro Stock racing rather than install a Hemi in their cars. Bourgeois was at Atlanta in June for a sixteen-car show, but an off-pace 7.79 lost to Paul Smith's 7.78. Dick had a really good outing for a Chevy-powered car on September 16 at the New England Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car show, and Dick advanced past the first round over a blower popping Kosty Ivanof. In round two, he ran a 6.72/204 to beat Fred Goeske, who broke at half-track. In the third round, a 7.20/184 beat Bob Mayer. Bourgeois then lost to Lew Arrington, but the "Brutus" Mustang went up in flames at the 1,000 feet mark. Lew could not return for the final, so Dick was reinstated and ran the Tom Prock driven "Custom Body" Challenger in the final. Prock took the win with a 6.51/201 over the Vega's 7.16/179. By late '73, it was pretty much impossible to compete against the Hemis with the Chevy motor. But the "Doug's Headers" car stayed with the "Rat" motor. |

Notes: Stan Bowman really ran well in '76. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 6.539/223.88 but smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Johnny White, 6.84/200 to 11.65/73. He won the NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga, where his final round 6.69/191.89 beat George Johnson, who smoked the tires to a 7.78/201 runner-up effort. Earlier, he set Low ET with his 6.60/191.89 run in the semifinals. Stan qualified #1 at the Beech Bend Divisional race with a 6.30 before beating John Austin's 6.51/199 in the final with a 6.357/205.47. He qualified on the "bump" at Indy with a 6.269/223.32, but in the first round, a 6.448/205.94 lost to Tom Prock's 6.24/223. Still, just qualifying at the US Nationals was a big deal as 40 cars attempted to make the show. |

Notes: Stan was at Edgewater in May for the NHRA Division 3 race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.21/211.76 but got crossed up in the opening round and lost to Chuck Finders. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.37/225.00 qualified #14, and he repeated the number in the first round but lost to John Lombardo's 6.27. He was at West Salem's Dragway 42 at the end of July for the AHRA Grandnationals. His 6.46/222.77 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom Hoover. Graham got crossed up in their race and shut off to 11.73/89.91 while eventual winner, Hoover, ran 6.45/221 to advance. Early in August, he faced Gary Bolger driving the "Golddigger" in a best of three match race at Tri-City. The race didn't go three rounds as Stan won two straight with times of 6.48/219 and 6.60/215. He was at Martin, Michigan, shortly after for the PHR Championships. The first round was a qualifying round, and his 6.48 over Kenny Safford made the eight-car field. In the first round, he lost to Hoover again. Stan ran 6.35/229.59 in winning Beech Bend WCS over Billy Meyer in Al Bergler's car. He was the fifth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.306/230.17. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. | Competitive with steel, '58 heads. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Gary's one-year sponsor from Pete Rose Candy Bars. Burgin started the season by qualifying #2 at the AHRA Winternationals and going to the final, where he lost to Tom Hoover. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.37/230 qualified #15. He lost to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. The NHRA Gatornationals had Burgin run 6.35/238.09 to qualify #10. In round one, he smoked the tires to a 7.72/125 loss to Raymond Beadle's 6.21/239 in the "Blue Max." The following week(March 18), he went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car but failed to reach the final. He also ran at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Dixie Nationals in April but failed to reach the final. In May, he won the "Jungle Jim" Memorial (Dutch Classic) race at Maple Grove. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/233.16 before stopping Bruce Larson's 6.42/219 in the final with a 6.33/231.36. He then won his second NHRA career race at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.19/237.46 qualified #7. in the opening round, Burgin's 6.41/233.16 defeated Tom McEwen's 6.53/214. A round two 6.35/235.60 beat Hoover's 6.40/237. Al Segrini's car caught fire on the line in the semifinal, so Burgin soloed with a 6.51/233. He faced Beadle in the final, and Gary's 6.49/239.36 got the victory over the "Max's" 6.69/207. Shortly after that, he was at Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. Unfortunately, Burgin broke in the first round, against Beadle. Gary won the NHRA Springnationals this year. He ran well on the NHR tour, but not earth-shattering. His best numbers were from qualifying #14 at Indy with a 6.120/244.56. Is this the Monza, rebodied? |

Notes: Everyone loved the "Chi-Town Hustler." It had a mystique about it. The team didn't race at many major events as they did quite well on the match race trail. That being said, they could hold their own against any nationally touring pro quite easily. Seeing the team at a national event was kind of like seeing a movie star without their make-up. Ron Colson drove the car in '73, and if you had the "Hustler" at your track, you were sure to draw a crowd. In January, Colson started the '73 season with a win at the Miami-Hollywood Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and Ron qualified #3 with a 6.78. He ran 6.66, a track record 6.64, and a 6.67 to reach the finals, where he met Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" Mustang. A final round 6.69/218.44 got the victory over Al's 6.95/189. Colson competed at the eight-car show for the Spring Drag Race at Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway. His 7.33 defeated Al Hanna's 7.48 in the "Eastern Raider in the first round." But in the semifinals, Wayne Mahaffey set Low ET with a 6.90 in the "Alabamian" to beat Ron's 7.12. Shortly after that, he was back in Miami for the Winter Funny Car Championships. This was another eight-car show, and in the opening round, Colson's 6.80/209.79 beat Shirl Greer's 6.98/207. A semifinal 6.70/213.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.71/211 in the "Blue Max." The team showed up at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals, where Ron qualified #4 with a 7.00. In round one, he ran 6.98/206.89 to beat Dave Condit's 7.11/200 in the "LA Hooker." Colson lost in the second round. On March 16/18, the team made a rare NHRA National event appearance at the Gatornationals. A strong 6.461/226.13 qualified #2, and a first-round 6.48 beat Paul Radici. In round two, the Charger slowed to a 6.70 that lost to Al Bergler's 6.57. Ron was in Connecticut in April for a four-car show. He ran Low ET at 6.61/218. A best of three match race against Tom Hoover was run at Minnesota, and Colson won three, straight setting a new track record 6.54. His best speed was 222. On April 28, the "Chi-Town Hustler" was at Capitol, and while Colson didn't reach the finals, he was one of four cars there that ran 6.5s. He ran 6.52/221 in beating "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.69/200 in one of his races. The next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Colson qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.62. In the first round, he was up against Tharp, who had only run 7.63 in qualifying. In their race, Ron improved to a 6.58/221.13, but Tharp improved even more, running a 6.33/211 to put Colson on the trailer. Colson did really well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, his 6.62 defeated Clare Sanders in the "Ramchargers" car. In round two, he beat Greer. He got a solo in the semifinal when Hanna lost oil pressure. In the final, he faced Bill Leavitt. The "Chi-Town" lost a supercharger, and Leavitt ran 6.71/207 for the win. Colson did get Top Speed honors at 221.67. Shortly after that, he was in New England for its fourth Funny Car Tourney race. Unfortunately, breakage killed Colson's chances when the car failed to fire for its first-round race with Dale Pulde. Breakage continued to plague the team at York US 30, where they were to run the "Blue Max" in a best of three match. Tharp won their first race when Colson broke a crankshaft. Ron was done for the day, and Tharp ran two solo passes for the match race win. July started right for the team, with Colson winning over an eight-car field at Edgewater's Funny Car Invitational. Shirley Muldowney fell to Ron's 6.85/212.76 in round one, and in the semifinals, his 6.83 advanced as Sanders broke a fuel pump. His final-round opponent was Low ET setter (6.56) Russell Long in the "Pabst" Charger. The two had a good race that saw Colson's 6.77/215.82 (Top Speed) victorious over Long's 6.89/206. The "Chi-Town Huster" was also at Rockford near the end of the month for its Manufacturer's Meet. Things didn't go so well as Colson lost to both Pat Foster driving the "Barry Setzer" Vega and Leavitt. In August, Colson was one of several cars that failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. The team returned to Edgewater for its Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships. Ron smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Foster. Colson won the Dixie Nationals held at Blaney Drag Strip in October. He beat Liberman's 6.88 in the final with track record times of 6.65/218.44. The team also returned to Lakeland on October 14 for the IHRA Nationals. It was supposed to be a sixteen-car show, but the field was too short. Colson qualified #6 and a 6.86/209.79 beat Foster's 6.94/174 in round one. Unfortunately, Colson lost in the next round. Gainesville was the team's only NHRA national event in 1973. |

Notes: This was one of the cars chosen to run the Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour for '76. Dave was a DNQ at NHRA Pomona, but he ran really well at OCIR's Fox Hunt race in March. 27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and his 6.38 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He did appear in the final at Sacramento's Funny Car race later in the month. But he lost to Russell Long. Dave qualified #16 at the NHRA World Finals at 6.450/218.97. He lost to Rick Johnson in round one, 6.32/227 to 7.23/140. |

Notes: Jim was the first alternate at NHRA Pomona with a 6.39 (no speed reported). He ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.40/224.32 in round two over low qualifier Dave Condit who got out of shape and shut off. Unfortunately, the car broke against eventual winner Simon Menzies in the semi-final. At OCIR's 12 annual Nitro Championships in July, Jim qualified #1 with a 6.22. He went to the final, beating Pat Foster when both had sub-par runs, but Dunn won. Jim's next national event was Seattle, where he had a great race. He qualified #4 at 6.10/236.84. In round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein with another 6.100/238.98 to 6.24/238.09. Round two saw Jim take a 6.14/232.55 decision over Tom Ridings at 6.49/184. He upset Don Prudhomme in the semis, 6.17/223.32 to 6.26/223. Jim shut off to a troubled 12.11/64 in the final, giving the win to Raymond Beadle at 6.22/230. Jim was the 7th alternate at Ontario (times not reported). Photo from Indy 1980. | At a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race, John Force beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. Notes: Had a terrible crash at Columbus. Original paint. This was the third Datsun body out of the mold behind John Collins and Gary Densham. | Tim was at Edgewater on May 4 for the second NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #2 in the four-car field with a 6.34. In the first round, he beat Murf McKinney and then set Low ET with a winning 6.23/208 in the final that beat Tom Motry. At the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, he qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Rick Johnson in the opening round of eliminations. The car was destroyed in the crash during qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He was ok. Rick qualified #1 and had Low ET at the Grandnationals at 6.197. His best NHRA national event times came in a #13 qualifying 6.095/242.58 at the US Nationals. |

Notes: Tim attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 6.39/191 best failed to make the show. He did much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.03/232.55 qualified #6. Unfortunately, in the first round, against Tripp Shumake, he encountered tire shake and shut off to a 7.18. A best of 6.22 failed to qualify at Atlanta's eight-car show for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but the following week (May 3), he was runner up to Dale Pulde at NHRA's Eastern Regional at Englishtown. His final round 6.48/225.56 lost to Pulde's Low ET shot of 6.02. He had problems at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.39/217.91 failed to qualify. Photo from Stanton, Mich., 1981. |

Notes: The "Chi-Town" bunch needed a new driver for '80 as their driver, Pete Williams, left at the end of '79. Austin Coil contacted Simon Menzies for the job, but Simon was unable to tour, so he recommended Frank Hawley. Coil decided to give Frank a try. Hawley went to Chicago to audition for the job, and his first race was to be a best of three match against Kenny Safford at US 30, Gary, Indiana. He won the match three straight. Since he still didn't have a fuel funny car license, Safford was the first to sign his license. After this, Hawley asked Coil if he had the job. Austin replied, "for another week." This continued for the next two years until they won the NHRA World Championship in '82. Then he was hired. The team ran at Union Grove a lot. Frank made it into the semifinals at the Olympics of Drag Racing in May before losing to Don Prudhomme. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove, Hawley finished runner-up to Tom Hoover. The team attempted to qualify at the PHR Championships, but a best of 6.56 left them as the seventh alternate for the show. |

Notes: Len attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he ended up as the fourth alternate with a 6.23/226.13 best. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he crashed in qualifying (times unavailable, but some reports indicate a 6.19?. The official ladder I've seen shows Jim Dunn on the bump at 6.21 and no times for Len). The team then came out with the sport's first Dodge Omni nitro car. |

Notes: This was an expensive year for Billy. He qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.04/243.24. Billy then beat John Collins, Denny Savage, and a fouling John Force in the semifinals with a 6.35. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle, and Billy was not the favorite. Beadle had beaten Don Prudhomme in the semifinals with a track record 5.93 at 245.23. But in that race, the body's roof first collapsed and then blew off. The "Blue Max" crew didn't have a spare body with them, so Texas neighbor Kenny Bernstein offered them the use of his spare body. So, before the final, they grafted the roof off of Bernstein's car onto theirs. It looked OK, but Meyer took the victory in the final with a 6.52/205.94 over Beadle's 6.66/236. The win probably cost Meyer more money than he made, as he used up four engines in the event. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #9 with a 6.05/237.46. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Billy lost to Don's 5.97/245. A week later (March 22), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Things didn't go so well; on Friday, he had a major fire that burnt up the Citation body during qualifying. The race was rain-delayed one week to March 28, and on a trial run, he had his supercharger explode and sent up 35 feet. fireball. The body and interior tin were cracked and broken, but Meyer was OK, and he was still qualified for the show. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.89/100 loss to Beadle's 6.29/234. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta had an eight-car field, and Billy's 6.16 qualified #7. He slowed to 7.08 in the first round, in a loss to Bernstein's 6.08. More problems arose at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Billy could not get the Citation down the track. It shook the tires and got out of shape on its qualifying passes, and the best ET was 10.33. Luckily for Meyer, only eight cars showed for the eight available spots and his time held up. His 6.32 beat John Pott's 6.47 in the "Powers Steel" car in round one. A semifinal 6.26/213.77 beat Bernstein's 6.28/226, and Billy found himself in the final against Beadle. Once again, Billy was not the favorite as the "Max" had run IHRA's first 5-second (5.99) time in qualifying, and he backed it up with a 6.00 in the first round. In the final, Meyer smoked the tires to a 7.46 while Beadle picked up the victory with a 6.23. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. After using up two more engines in qualifying, his 6.19 qualified #6. But then his luck began to turn. In the first round, Roy Harris smoked the tires against him, and Billy advanced with a 6.28. In the semifinals, his quick-leaving 6.48 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.45. This set up another Meyer vs. Beadle final. This time Billy turned the tables, and his 6.21/228.42 got the win over Beadle's 6.26/236. The Funny Car drivers boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, so Meyer's next stop was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He picked up the win by stopping Bernstein in the final with a 6.17/216. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, Billy's 6.14/233.76 qualified #6, but a first-round 6.47/238.09 lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.40/222. On July 4, he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 6.29/226.70 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.28/231.36 beat Miller's 6.34/229, but a semifinal 6.49/219.51 lost to Beadle's 6.21/229. He was runner-up to Beadle at the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 12, and the following week (July 19), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He again used two engines in qualifying, finally making the show with a 6.06/238.72 for the #8 spot. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round against Miller and shut off to an 8.59/100.22. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. It was an eight-car field, and Billy qualified #4 with a 6.29/217.39. He improved to a 6.13/219.51 on a solo in the first round when Rick Deschner's Monza broke, and a semifinal 6.07 gave him Low ET and a win over Harris' 6.27. In the final, he faced Tom Anderson driving Jim Wemett's Arrow. Meyer had problems and shut down to 6.66/163.93 in a runner-up finish to Anderson's 6.29/229. Meyer ran his first-ever "5" at Bristol on August 2. His 5.99/235 gave him the pole for the IHRA Summernationals and the time held for Low ET as well. An opening round 6.13/234.98 beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle.” Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bernstein's 6.30. The following week he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car field, and Billy qualified #1 with a track record 5.896 at 240.64. But in the first round, he overpowered the track, and his smoky 6.57/203.16 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme at 6.24/236. He then went to Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships. It featured a six-car show with all cars making two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Carl Swanson's 6.25/233 beat Meyer's 6.49/210.77 in his first race, but in the second race, Billy also ran 6.25 at 225 to earn a spot in the final. So once again, he faced Swanson, and the results were the same. Carl won with a 6.32/229 over Meyer's close 6.35/221.67. Indy was the next stop for Meyer for the NHRA US Nationals, and he was not happy when he failed to qualify. He had a chance to be the IHRA FC champion as he and Beadle were fighting it out for that title, but Meyer chose to stay in Texas and not compete at the IHRA U.S. Open Championships held at Bristol. He did go to Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals, where his 6.09/231.36 qualified #10.But an off-pace 6.31/187.50 in the first round, lost to Tom Riding's 6.02/234.The season ended badly at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals.During qualifying, he had a valve cover leak, and the oil hit the headers, and the resulting fire burned the body off the car. His time on the pass was 6.26/177.51. The "bump" for the show was 6.20. He was back at OCIR in the first week of November for its Manufacturer's Meet. He reached the final by setting Low ET and Top Speed in his second race at 5.98/246.57. He went up against Springnationals winner Craig Epperly in the final, and Meyer had his parachute fall out, and Craig got the victory. He still finished ninth in NHRA's FC points. Billy’s best NHRA speed was 243.24 at the Winternationals. We previously listed 250.00. Did that occur at an IHRA event, or was that a mistake? |

Notes: Everyone was talking about the great ETs at Lebanon (Mineo had run in the 6.20s with the Coke Circuit that year - unheard of numbers for him). - David Hapgood | Mineo qualified eighth with a 6.44 at the AHRA Winternationals and won his first-round race over John Lombardo with a 6.52/197.36. Billy Meyer's 6.72/195 beat his second round 6.83/188.28. Gordon attempted to qualify at NHRA Pomona but did not make the show (times not available). That was his only NHRA national event this year. | We need to confirm the year of the photo. I am pretty sure I saw the car with the 1972 nose as late as 1975. - BP |

Notes: Car was destroyed at IHRA Dragway 42 on August 20, 1972, putting Muldowney in hospital with burns. The incident was not depicted accurately in the movie Heart Like A Wheel. Shirley ran 6.70 in Connecticut, 6.82/205.90 at Epping, NH. Muldowney failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. She was not alone as many good cars failed to make the field, including Richard Tharp, Larry Fullerton, the "Ramchargers" and "Pisano and Mastsubara."On Feb.26, she had one of six cars competing at Orlando. Muldowney did well, finishing runner-up to Mart Higginbotham. On March 12, Shirley lost a best of three match race to Gary Bolger at Edgewater. Her 7.0's-207 lost to the "Golddigger's" 6.9's-210. The following week(March 19), she failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Shortly after that, she was back at Edgewater for a best of three match race against Frank Huff, driving the "Super Vega."Shirley won all three of their races, running a best of 6.94/200.44. Unfortunately, at her next match race, held at Kilkare Dragway on March 25, she lost all three of her races against Larry Arnold, driving the "Kingfish."On April 30, her 6.8's at 210 beat Dick Bourgeois in the "Doug's Headers" Vega two straight. In May, Muldowney was one of four FC's that competed at Tri-City. In her first race, she ran 6.90/208 to beat Connie Kalitta's 7.23/172. An off-pace 8.55 lost to Jim Paoli's 6.76 in her second race, and the car died on the line in her last race, giving Butch Maas a single. A Monday night show was run at Toronto on May 22, and she was runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Shirley ran well on May 26 at Union Grove's Drag Racing Olympics. She ran 6.76 twice, with a best speed of 213 to reach the final against Bobby Rowe. There was no stopping Rowe this day as he won with an easy 6.68/193. She was back at Union Grove the next day, where she lasted until the semifinals before her 6.72/202 lost to eventual winner Al Marshall's 6.66/210. She was at Milan Dragway in June for the NHRA Division Three race. In the opening round, her 7.35 beat Ed O'Brien, but in the semifinals, a 6.87/205 lost to Maas' 6.80/208. Shirley was at Atco on July 12 for its Funny Car Championships. Although she had lost to Leroy Chadderton in the first round, she came back out for a consolation race against Charlie Therwhanger. She won their race with a 6.93/225.00. It was a career-best speed for her(up to this point). She was back in Toronto on August 6 for a fourteen-car show. This time Muldowney won, stopping Don Schumacher and Arnold along the way. |

Notes: Ran late 1966/67. first as Hilborn-injected, later as blown. Notable for stock-displacement, stock crank smallblock 289 Ford. Ran fuel, backed with a C-4 auto trans. One-piece lift-off glass body and unusual aluminum frame (including rollbar) contributed to light weight. (The truck weighed in sub-1400 pounds, and Nash was quoted in late '66 as saying he was still shooting for 1200.) Still, the aluminum frame scared the NHRA/which banned this construction in 1967, ending the Bronco's career. Nash went on to earn fame for developing the very popular Doug Nash 5-speed transmission. |
