Notes: Doug was at Edgewater Park in May for a UDRA Circuit race. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.51/214.88 qualified #2 behind Pat Dakin's 6.43. In the first round, he soloed at 6.52/214.28 when Gary Dye shut down on the line with an oil leak. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, his car broke against Dakin. The team entered 1974 NHRA Indianapolis but did not show. |

Notes: Richard Dietz and magneto magnate Don Zig. | Bakersfield held its Pro Comp show a little different than most by running 16 AA/DA's in one field of sixteen and another field of sixteen raced with the BB/FC's and the A/FD's. Frank qualified #1 in his field with a 7.10/191.89. Another 7.10/193.54 beat Mark Niver's 7.27/183 in the first round. In round two, both he and his opponent, Dave Bellemeur got crossed up, but Harris recovered first and won with a 7.68/147.29. In the semifinals, Frank got a slight holeshot and his 7.16/192.30 beat Derry O'Donovan's quicker 7.14/191. Another holeshot in the final saw Harris run 7.10 to win over Joe Ortega's twin engined car at 7.08. The two Eliminator winners then raced each other. Don Enriquez had won the other Eliminator and these two would race in the final for Pro Comp honors. Frank had the lead in the final until half-track where he hit a slippery spot on the track and he slowed to a 7.26/180.72 that lost to Don's 6.99/202. |

Notes: Confirmed 7.695/182.18 at IHRA Cincinnati in 1984. | Hill's Capri wasn't short on horsepower. The car was strong, but tire shake did him in more often than anything else. At Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals, Roy qualified #7 with a 7.68. He beat Mickey Stephens in the first round, with a 7.65 and an even better 7.62 at 185 advanced in round two. Unfortunately, he got a little nervous facing Lee Shepherd in the semifinals and fouled. He also ran well at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified in the top half of the field at Bristol(#7 at 7.70/185.18) for the IHRA Springnationals and a 7.62/183.67 advanced past a fouling Leo Clark in the first round. But in round two, he fouled against Joe Lepone. In July, he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The little Capri showed just what it could do, resetting the IHRA speed mark to 189.07. Tire shake did him in during eliminations, but it was still a strong showing. While he was running his IHRA combination, he was still trying to sort out his "legal" 500 cubic inch motor for NHRA. His next stop on the IHRA tour was at Edgewater for the Summernationals. Roy qualified #3 and ran as well as 7.69/182.18 during eliminations before losing to Shepherd in the semifinals. It was then off to Maryland for the Mountain Motor Nationals. Hill qualified #2 with a 7.55 at a track record speed of 184.61. In the first round, his 7.57 beat Clark's 8.08. But in round two, he lost to Don Nicholson. Near the end of August, he went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 7.57/184.04 qualified #4. Roy then beat Lou Tabillo, Bob Olson, and Billy Ewing (in that order) to reach the final, where once again, he went up against that Camaro team from Texas. Hill was looking for a performance advantage and pulled the tree too hard, giving Shepherd another victory. He was back at Bristol in September for the IHRA Fallnationals, where he again ran well, but failed to reach the finals. The IHRA season came to a close at Rockingham for the US Open Championships. Roy's 7.55 qualified #5, and in round two, he even beat Shepherd. In the semifinals, he beat Lepone and moved into the final against Rickie Smith. Both cars ran 7.57 (Hill at 183.29), but Smith got to the finish line first. |
