Notes: Jerry qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.31/189.47. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.32/188.99 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.22/190. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 7.28/189.03 qualified #7. But in the first round, Don Beverley's 7.28/190 beat Haas' 7.32/189.35. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Slick 50 Nationals. Once again, Jerry qualified #7, but it took a 7.19/190.51 to get the spot. In round one, "Trickie Rickie," Smith got a holeshot and beat Jerry's 7.20/189.27 with a 7.23/190. Gainesville was next on the NHRA calendar for the Gatornationals. Haas' 7.18/191.97 qualified #6, but once again, he went down in the first round, where a great 7.19/191.89 lost to Vince Khoury's slower 7.25/190. He had Billy Huff drive his car at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals.

Notes: Mark ran well in '89, considering he changed makes, going from Pontiac to Oldsmobile. It was quite hard just qualifying for the Pro Stock shows, and he was able to make it into the field at most of the meets. He started the season by using a 7.41 to qualify #13 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He lost to Bob Glidden's 7.30/188 in the first round, with a 7.38/186.95. The series moved to Houston for the Supernationals where a 7.35 qualified #9. He met low qualifier Larry Morgan in the first round, and lost. Mark just made the show in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. He was #16 with a 7.43/186.18, but he lost to Darrell Alderman in the first round. Mark failed to qualify at the Mid-South Nationals, but once again got the #16 spot with a 7.50/183.55 at the Cajun Nationals. He lost to Kenny Delco in the first round. At the Springnationals, Pawuk qualified much lower with a 7.40/184.95 for the #7 spot. He beat Gary Herman in the first round, and in round two, a 7.45/184 beat Warren Johnson. Unfortunately, he lost to Glidden in the semifinal. The next event was the Grandnationals in Canada. Mark's 7.45/184.46 was good for the #15 spot. An off pace 7.62/182.74 in the first round, lost to Rickie Smith's 7.46/183. He ventured to Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 2 and ran quite well, earning runner-up honors to Smith. The following week, he was back in the NHRA fold running Englishtown for the Summernationals. A best attempt of 7.44/185.79 was good for the second alternate. He rebounded by qualifying #13 at the Mile High Nationals with a 7.92/172.74 getting the spot. Mark lost to Joe Lepone Jr. in the first round. He used a 7.37 to qualify #11 at the California Nationals. A first-round 7.48/185.41 fell to Glidden's 7.33/187 in the first round. The next NHRA event was at Seattle for the Seafair Nationals and Mark ran a 7.38/186.72 to qualify in the top half of the field (#7). He should have won his first-round race with a 7.44/185.95, but he was slow off the line and lost to Ken Koretsky's 7.46/185.60. The next stop on the tour was the Northstar Nationals. Mark qualified #13 with a 7.49/184.12 and lost in the first round, to Morris Johnson Jr. At the US Nationals, Mark used a 7.40/186.14 to qualify #11. He ran a somewhat slower 7.48/185.14 in the first round, that lost to Morgan's 7.40/186. The next race was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove where a 7.42/185.83 failed to make the show (sixth alternate). He made the field at the Chief Nationals with a 7.36/186.29, but he lost again in the first round. This time, a 7.42/186.18 lost to Don Beverley's 7.38/186. At the Fallnationals, a 7.47/184.42 qualified #11. He still had the "first-round blues" when he lost to Morgan in round one.

Notes: Don attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his best of 7.61/185.10 was good for the fifteenth alternate. He was the fifth alternate at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.61/181.19 best. His bad luck continued at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he was the eighth alternate with a best of 7.74/179.74. He bucked the trend at the NHRA Springnationals where he qualified #9 with a 7.58/182.40. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Bob Glidden. Don gave it a shot, but his 7.69/182.14 was no match for Glidden's 7.50/184. Don ran 7.595/184.08 at NHRA Grandnational Molson.

Notes: Gianino was the twelfth alternate at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rough with a 7.81/177.13 best. In mid-June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He ended up as the seventh alternate with a 7.69/178.57 best. Sam attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his best of 8.18/162.30 was a long way from making the field.

Notes: Gauthier was the tenth alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.88/173.41. Alban attempted to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals, but his 7.74/177.23 best was good for the third alternate. His Firebird was awarded the best appearing car at the meet. He qualified on the "bump" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.745/180.50. He crashed the car during qualifying at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals in September. He had run 7.730/179.49 but still hadn't made the show. He came back for another run, and the car got loose and flipped. He was ok.

Notes: Smith's 500 cubic inch program left a lot to be desired. While he dominated in the big monster-motored cars, his Ford effort with the "small" engine lagged behind. He won the first three IHRA races of the season, but Bily Meyer (IHRA president at the time) kept throwing weight on his car to try and slow him down. But in NHRA racing, he was hard-pressed even to qualify. He went to Gainesville along with 55 other Pro Stock hopefuls, and his 7.52/184.99 best was nowhere near good enough to make the field which had a 7.41 "bump." Notes: Gene qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.73/177.51. He lost to Gordie Rivera in the first round. He was the eighth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.82/175.78 best. Things went better at Atlanta, where his 7.81/176.40 qualified #9. Unfortunately, qualifying #9 set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Warren Johnson. Fasching's 7.93/172.02 finished second best in that race to WJ's 7.73/181.

Notes: Ran 7.622/183.89 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87. | Nick was the eighth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 7.64/181.01. He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and still used his "small" NHRA combination to run 7.51/183 to qualify #15. He lost to eventual winner Rickie Smith in round one. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 7.52/183.97 qualified #14, but he lost to Lee Dean in the first round. Atlanta was his next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Nick qualified #12 with a 7.56/183.33. He improved to 7.52/184.01 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.49/183. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Nick qualified on the "bump" with a 7.68/181.01. Gary Brown fouled against him in round one, and Nick ran an easy 8.40/134.00 to advance. In the second round, he fouled against Reid Whisnant and shut off to 9.28. He really improved at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 7.54/181.92 qualified in the top half of the field (#5). Unfortunately, he fell off to 7.70/181.15 in a first-round loss to Stan Mizell's 7.67/180. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine race. It was an eight-car show and Nick's 7.66 qualified #7. In the first round, he fouled away a 7.62/181.45 against Ken Koretsky. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There his 7.62/183.89 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Bob Glidden. It was a good race and Nikolis prevailed, running a 7.60/181.89 to beat Glidden's 7.61/184. In round two he ran his best time of the weekend, a 7.58 at 183.03, but it wasn't enough to beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/184. He continued to qualify well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where a 7.54/183.59 got him the #6 spot in the show. Qualifying was one thing, but getting past that first-round was another. Here he lost to Larry Morgan in round one. Denver was the next stop on the NHRA schedule and Nick qualified #9 for the show with an 8.01/172.47. This set up a rematch against low qualifier, Glidden in round one. This time Nick got out of shape and shut off while Glidden went on to win the race. Twenty Nine cars attempted to qualify at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Nick's 7.61/181.63 qualified #8 ahead of such stars as Leal and Morgan. A first-round 7.59/181.81 advanced when Morgan fouled and in round two his 7.67/181.55 beat Jerry Eckman's late 7.58/182.55. An off pace 7.75/181.05 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Allen's 7.57/183 in the Reher and Morrison Beretta. He qualified impressively at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals where his 7.49/188.99 qualified #5. Considering that there were 52 cars attempting for the sixteen-car field he was doing pretty well. But a 7.58/183.97 lost to Korestsky's 7.54/183 in the first round. He was the #5 qualifier again at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 7.50/183.56. He improved to 7.48/184.08 in the first round, to beat Joe Sway's 7.56/182. In round two he ran Glidden, and he shut off to a 7.87/151.74 after seeing it was hopeless to try to catch Bob's 7.38/186. He He qualified in the undesirable #9 spot at the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.43/184.84 forcing him to run low qualifier, Glidden in round one, again. Nikolis ran a great 7.44/184.69 in their first-round race, but Bob's 7.41/187 got the win.

He beat Al Hofmann in the first round, and in round two, his 5.26/279.15 (Top Speed) beat Jim White's 5.41/270 in the "Hawaiian."In the semifinals, he again lost to the eventual winner when both he and Dale Pulde ran 5.33 (Force at 274.64), but Pulde got the win. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. John qualified #1 with a 5.25/272.39. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.23/273.88 single when Dal Denton failed to show. In round two a 5.28/279.32 advanced when opponent Mark Sievers went into a wheelstand and shut off. In the semifinals, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" Probe. A 5.28/278.37 did the trick, putting Mark's 5.41/283 on the trailer. In the final, he met the '89 NHRA Funny Car Champion, Bruce Larson. Unfortunately for Larson, he smoked the tires and shut off while Force motored to his sixth NHRA National Event victory with a 5.36/272.39. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.30/272.64 qualified #2. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.55/257 beat Jerry Caminito in round two, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Spurlock. The fifth race of the NHRA season was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. John qualified #4 with a 5.29/274.89. He beat Johnny West in round one, and a 5.38/264 advanced in round two when Hofmann's T-Bird broke. In the semifinals, he got beat by a strong running Paul Smith. Smith's 5.35 beat John's close 5.37. Only 14 cars showed at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Force set a track record 5.27 at 277.26 in qualifying #1. He lasted until the semifinals where crew chief, Austin Coil dialed in too much power and he smoked the tires and lost to Ed McCulloch. It took a while, but John got his second win of '90 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There, he set a track record in qualifying #1 with a 5.36 at 272.39. He beat Kalitta and a 5.42/268 advanced past round two when White broke on the line. In the semifinals, McCulloch smoked the tires and Force made his way into the final with a 5.50/265. There he beat Richard Hartman for the win. He didn't have to wait nearly as long for his next victory as it came at the next event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.30 (Low ET) and beat Wyatt Radke in round one. In round two, Art Hendey fouled against him and his 5.51/254 advanced. In the semifinals, he ran a 5.46/257 over a tire-smoking Spurlock. In the final, he ran the "Hawaiian."White ran 5.49/261 in the final, but it finished second best to John's 5.37/275.48. The trend continued into Canada where NHRA held it's Grandnationals. John won his third event in a row. A 5.42/268.17 qualified #3 and another 5.42 in the first round, beat Gary Densham. In the second round, his 5.40/255 beat Spurlock's 5.45/260. He slowed to 5.46/267.06 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat White's 5.64/236. That put him into the final with Oswald. Oswald had problems and shut off while Force ran 5.40/267.93 for the win. A lot of eyes were on Force at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals to see if he would win his fourth race in a row. It was not to be. He qualified #4 with a 5.28/275.31, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the first round, when both ran 5.38's (Force at 270.67). He made a stop at Kansas City for its Summernationals race. Six FCs were in attendance. John set a track record at 5.42 in the semifinals on a solo run, but in the final, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires losing to Densham. Back on the NHRA trail, he was at the Mile High Nationals where he ran a 5.55/255.60 to qualify first. A first-round 5.62/265.99 (Top Speed) beat Freddie Neely. In round two, John showed he could drive, running a 5.59/254 to beat Larson's quicker 5.56. Unfortunately, a semifinal 5.56/259.74 lost to McCulloch's 5.53/257. The twelfth NHRA race of the season was the California Nationals. There John returned to his winning ways. A 5.35/274.05 qualified #2. He beat Radke in the first round, and in round two, a 5.46/272 beat Glenn Mikres. In the semifinals, he stopped McCulloch with a 5.54 and that put him in the final against Larson. Larson had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying so it was a good race. John had the power to win though, running 5.44/270.35 over Bruce's 5.47/268. This was Force's fifth win of the season on the NHRA tour.

Notes: Photo 81 US Nationals. When parts breakage wasn't thwarting his efforts, there was also the realization that this short wheelbase car was becoming limited to running any quicker than three tenths under the established BB/A index. (8.50 at the time) Consistency was never its strong point, since the car enjoyed taking the occasional "scenic route" down any given race track, or as my dad would put it, "It got ignorant." When the rest of the Comp Eliminator cars started stepping up to the five and six tenths under range, the 8.20's he would consistently run, began to leave him on the outside looking in on race day. It was after the '84 US Nationals, where we had failed to qualify for the first time, that he decided to sell the Opel and start construction on a new, longer wheelbase car, although saving the Chrysler power plant. - Dawn Mazi
