Notes: The Rough Rider Pinto of Papesh, Cartelli and Randolph was driven by Bernie Papesh. It started out as an injected nitro combination with a BBC and a B&J 2 speed and a Crowerglide. They later switched to a blown BBC, Crowerglide and a B7J 3 speed. I believe their best was a 7.9 something at just over 200 MPH. They ran this car from about 1971 to 1975. - Rocky Ausec |

Notes: Joe qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.729/154.10. An opening round 8.780/155.44 lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.69/157. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Joe ran 8.710/158.52 to qualify #6 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he fouled away an 8.84/155.70 in a first-round loss to Lee Shepherd, who ran 9.04/152 to advance. On May 21, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division Three race. His 8.74 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's 8.67, and these two would work their way into the final. Joe ran another 8.74/155.17 in the first round to stop Virgil Brunner's 9.16/151. A semifinal 8.75/155.44 took out Dave Avery's 8.89/151. Booth had the performance advantage by about a tenth as he ran 8.65 in his semifinal race, but the AMC broke in the final, and Joe ran 8.83/155.70 for the victory. The next Division Two race was held at Indianapolis on June 4. Once again, Joe qualified #2 (8.67/157.34), but this time he followed Glidden (8.65/158). An opening round 8.78 beat Brunner's 9.38, but he fouled away an 8.81/154.37 against Andy Mannarino in the semifinals. Satmary qualified #10 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.760/155.17. An 8.84/154.90 beat Kevin Rotty's slightly quicker 8.83/155 in the first round, and in round two, Don Campanello's 8.95/152 fell to Joe's 8.87/154.37. His run ended in the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 8.72/151 put his 8.89/154.63 on the trailer. Joe qualified #6 at the Englishtown Summernationals at 8.722 (speed not reported). He beat Don Campanello in round one, 8.66/156.24 to 8.81/152. NI round two, Joe took out Frank Iaconio, 8.65/157.06 to 8.71/156. Larry Lombardo ended his day in the semis, 8.63/155 to 8.69/155.44. Joe qualified #2 at the Grandnationals at 8.630/155.97 (Top Speed of the Meet). He lost to a Dempsey Hardy holeshot in round one, 8.77/153 to 8.75/154.63. Joe had a fantastic U.S. Nationals at Indy. He qualified #4 at 8.680/155.70. In round one, he took out Brad Yuill, 8.735/153.58 to 8.80/155. Randy Humphrey had problems against him in round two, and Joe won, 8.734/154.63 to 9.54/105. Satmary then grabbed a huge holeshot win over Lee Shepherd in the semis with his 8.745/154.90 taking out the Reher & Morrison team's 8.728/153.32. Joe was up against world-beater Bob Glidden in the final, and his 8.772/155.17 couldn't catch Bob's 8.61 at only 146. Joe's next race was the World Finals at Ontario. He qualified #6 at 8.720/155.70. He got a bit of revenge on Dempsey Hardy in round one, 8.823/153.58 to 8.99/151. Larry Lombardo put a close to his season in round two, however, 8.71/155 to 8.880/153.32. It was a good year for the racer from Hammond, Indiana. Did Joe run 8.62 in Divisional action? |

Notes: Also Ran IHRA, which ran at 500 inches in 1988. Won 1988 IHRA Spring Nationals with a 7.500 at 184.35 and the IHRA Fall Nationals with a 7.426 at 186.18. Did Warren run 190.67 at the Winston All-Stars race in April? We need to confirm whether this was a different car than the Cutlass Ciera WJ started the year with. |

Notes: The first car to use the new Ed Donovan Hemi. He was runner-up to Don Garlits's revolutionary new rear-engine dragster at the 1971 Springnationals in Dallas. John was also runner-up to Hank Johnson at the 1971 Supernationals in Ontario. Ran 6.530 at that race. Ran 6.493 qualifier at Indy, followed by a great 6.46/232.55 (Top Speed) blast that fell to Garlits' 6.32 in eliminations. In January 1971, set the AHRA speed record at 227.84. Ran 6.46 at Martin, Mich. | John started the season by debuting a new SPE-built car with a win at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He qualified #6 with a 6.77 and a first-round 6.88 beat Bob Downey in the "Howard Cam Rattler." In the semifinals, a 6.87/217.91 beat James Warren's 6.97/220. In the final, he faced #5 qualifier, Larry Dixon. Dixon fouled, and John's 6.88/219.51 took the victory. On January 10, AHRA held its first Grand American race of the year at Lions. Wiebe qualified with a 6.73 and improved to a 6.61 in his first-round win. He had trouble and shut off in the second round, giving Don Moody the win. John ran 6.93/191.48 to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 6.79/214.28. At the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 24, he lost in the first round, when his quicker 6.80/227.27 lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.84/206. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.84 qualified #18 in the 32 car field. That set up a first-round meeting with the #2 qualifier, Don Prudhomme. John ran 6.92, but he lost to the "Snake's" 6.69. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27 and featured a sixteen-car field. John beat Gary Cochran in the first round, with a 6.68/230.17. A 6.73/231.36 (Top Speed) beat Dennis Baca in the second round. But in the semifinal, while doing his burnout, a rod let go, and he shut it down, giving Dwight Salisbury a solo into the final. Lions held an eight-car show on April 5, and he qualified #3 but failed to reach the final. He did reach the final at West Palm Beach on April 18 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. John beat some heavy hitters on the AHRA Grand American trail. He took out Steve Carbone, Don Garlits, and Jimmy King to reach the final, where he had to settle for runner-up when he fouled against Jim Nicoll. |
