Notes: Jim qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.18/261.78. His 5.29/261.78 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Gene Snow's 4.98/255. He was the first alternate at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.31/260.94. At Houston, for the NHRA Supernationals, he fouled against Dick Lahaie in the opening round after qualifying #15 with a 5.12/268.85. Head also qualified #15 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.22/266.35, but once again, he left early as in round one, both he and his opponent, Lori Johns, smoked the tires.Johns'6.11/214 finished first, ahead of his 6.30/255.89. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. His 5.06/271.41 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, he improved to 5.02/276.32 to defeat Johns, but a off-pace 5.48/259.36 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.02/276 in the semifinal. He just made the top half of the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 5.06/274.97 qualified #8. He beat "the Greek" Chris Karamesines in round one, with a 5.13/270.27, but in round two, Joe Amato's 5.14/273 stopped his 5.21/265.80. Only 15 cars showed at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Head got into the field in the #12 spot. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round. Baton Rouge was also one car short for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Jim qualified #8 with a 5.20/261.78. But once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Snow. Columbus was the next race on the NHRA schedule for the Springnationals. Head qualified #10 with a 5.21/263.46. This time Frank Bradley beat him in the opening round. The Noodle Car. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 4, Fall 1990 issue has 282.60. We think that was a mistake and was the 262.61 from the World Finals. We need to review IHRA races to validate.

Notes: Chris qualified #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals at 6.832/216.34. He had a wing over the engine (front engine and a separate entry?) He won round one over Paul Schoenfield, 7.53/203.16 to 8.09, but Kenny Safford got to him in round two, 6.91/212.76 to 7.29/214.79. That was the Greek's last NHRA national event in Top Fuel, but he ran his funny car at the Gatornationals. Chris also ran 6.595 at Long Beach and 206.89. | The original rectangular Milodon decal before the bowed shape. Notes: Won Division 3 1970-71. Garlits chassis with Al Bergler nose piece. Ran 6.74 at St. Louis. The best NHRA national event ET was 6.590. Where was the 6.576 run? | Jim was the last of 19 qualifiers to run a six to qualify for the 32 car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 6.999. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Larry Dixon in the first round, 6.88/209 to 7.10/210.77. He did much better at Gainesville on February 15 for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.704/222.22 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field, and an opening-round 6.776/217.39 beat Bob Bofysil. Jim singled with a 7.12/158 in round two when Fred Forkner failed to show in time, and in the semifinals, he got around low qualifier Don Garlits with a 6.83/158 when Garlits had his transmission break. In the final, he faced Dave Chenevert in Robert Anderson's car, and he was late off the line, giving Dave the victory with a 6.74/231 over his quicker 6.613/226.13. Paoli was back at Gainesville at the end of May for the NHRA Division 2 race. He soloed with a 6.87/207.84 in the first round, but his 'chute fell out in the semifinals and slowed him to a 7.90 loss against Preston Davis. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 (times unknown), but he lost to Eddie Taylor in the first round, on a holeshot, 6.79/196 to 6.769/218.44. He qualified #13 at the NHRA Summernationals at York, 6.975/222.22. In round one, he beat Marshell Love, 6.859/223.32 (Top Speed of the Meet) to 7.04/212. A foul ended his day in round two, and he shut off to 7.62/116, sending Jim Nicoll on. The 6.59 qualified #9 at Indy (speed unknown), and he ran 6.67/199.55 to beat Bob Williams' close 6.74/214 in round one. Jim shut off to a 17 second run against Brian Budd in round two. Jim qualified #8 at the World Finals at Dallas (times unavailable) and best Gary Cochran in round one, 6.76/194.33 to 6.92/210.77. In round two, he fouled against Gary Biggers, tossing out an excellent 6.62 as Biggers coasted to an 8.20 win.

Notes: Won dramatic US Nationals event over Jim Nicoll's clutch-splitting crash at the top end. Ran a string of 6.40s, eventually tying John Mulligan's 6.43 all time quickest run from Indy 1969. Also ran 6.52 at Fremont. | Don qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.82. He lasted until the third round where a wheelstand against Tommy Ivo cost him the race. Prudhomme was spending more time with his FC, but he did show up at Fremont in his Dragster for the Northern Nationals. Sixty-six cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field. Don got in easily and ran a 6.55/220.58 over Gary Cochran's 6.85/215 in the first round. In the second round, a 6.59/220.58 beat John Wiebe's 6.85/222. In the semifinals, Don set Low ET of the meet with a 6.52/222.22, but he fouled and lost to Ron Hampshire.

Notes: In January, Prudhomme started the season at Firebird Raceway for its test and tune event. After making two early shut-off runs on Friday and a tire-shaking run on Saturday, he had to leave early. The vibration was so bad that it damaged the chassis, and the team had to take it to Al Swindahl's shop so that he could weld on a new rear clip. Everything was good for the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, where Don qualified #11 with a 4.95/280.11. Unfortunately, he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round. He was back at Firebird Raceway in February for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. A 4.96/289.57 qualified #12, and although he improved to 4.93/276.32 in the first round, he lost to Doug Herbert's 4.83/299. He became just the third driver to top 300 mph when he did it in the first week of March at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. His 4.86/301.60 qualified #5. In the first round, Joe Amato's 4.91/289 dropped his 4.90/295.08. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #11 at 4.91/295.37. But that first round continued to be a problem for the "Snake" as his 4.91/293.54 fell to Tommy Johnson Jr's 4.90/296. He was the second qualifier at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, where his 4.92/285.71 followed Amato's 4.91/292. But again, Johnson Jr. stopped him in the first round in a 4.97/288 to 5.06/264.39 battle. He barely made the show at Atlanta, where a 5.02/284.45 qualified #15 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This time, eventual winner Eddie Hill beat him in round one. Things worsened at Memphis, where his 5.19/279.58 best failed to qualify for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He also could not qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, where he was the third alternate at 5.07/283.73. Things turned in the right direction at Columbus, where not only did he qualify (#10 at 5.03/282.22), he got his first-round win of the year when his 5.04/282.66 beat Andy Woods' 5.02/288. His happiness was short-lived as Hill's 4.98/289 put his 5.06/283.64 on the trailer in round two. Topeka was NHRA's next stop on the calendar for the Western Nationals. Prudhomme qualified #12 at 5.07/263.15. He was down on power here, as his speed was the slowest of all qualifiers. He got a little luck in round one, where his 5.20/260.79 beat Shelly Anderson's late 5.15/269, but in round two, his 5.24/247.32 was way off of Amato's winning 5.07/287 pace. The NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver was nothing to write home about. He qualified #15 with a 5.39/245.90 and lost to Hill in round one. Sonoma was another bad race for the "Snake" as he was the fourth alternate for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.19/267.77. At Seattle, he qualified on the "bump" at 5.06/278.81 for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, and he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Cory McClenathan. Clearly, this was not a good season for Prudhomme, and he needed to get the car headed back in the right direction fast. It didn't happen at Brainerd, where he qualified #13 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.09/281.16. In the first round, his 5.08/269.70 got around Herbert's 5.18/288, but he slipped to a 5.19/265.40 in round two and lost to Rance McDaniel's 5.10/263. Don was the third member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club on 3/06/93 with a 301.60 at Houston. That was Don's best speed of the year, combined with his best ET at 4.860. He also ran a nice 4.931 bump spot ET at 1993 Topeka Fall.

Notes: Sneaky Pete had an up-and-down season for '70. It started Miami-Hollywood on January 11. He was there for a twelve-car show. He was trying out a C-6 automatic transmission at this event. In the opening round, his 7.35 beat Ken Kelly but an off-pace 7.74/200.00 lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 6.85/222 in round two. At Beeline, for the AHRA Winternats. He qualified #14 and was one of three SOHC Ford-powered cars that made the sixteen-car field. He lost to John Wiebe in the first round when he had supercharger problems. In March, at the AHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham, Pete qualified with an easy 7.03 and ran a best of 6.80/211 on the way to a semifinal finish where he was asked to shut off on the line by starter Pete Talmadge for an oil leak. Pete refused and got sideways in his own oil and lost to Chip Woodall. At the Gatornationals, Pete qualified #14 with a 7.0, but he lost to John Forkner in the first round, 6.80 to 6.94. A 7.25 qualified #1 on April 5 at Phenix for the NHRA Division 2 race. He got a first-round bye and then beat Buddy Jentzen in the semifinal with a 7.34. In the final, a 7.13/207.84 was only good for runner-up as Preston Davis beat him with a 7.11/201. On April 12, Pete faced Tommy Ivo at Suffolk for a best two out of three match race. His slower 7.13/195.54 beat Ivo's 7.03/213 in the first race. Pete made it two wins in a row to win the match when he beat Ivo in the second race with a 7.00/200.44 over Tommy's 7.10/213. On May 23, he set a 7.04 track record at Blaney on the way to another runner-up finish to Davis at the third NHRA Division 2 race. He suffered another early loss at the NHRA Springnats, where Wiebe beat him in the opening round. That was followed up with a big win at the NHRA Summernats in July. He qualified tenth with a 6.93/215.82 and ran 6.95/204.08 and 6.99/212.26 in the first two rounds before easing into the final with a 9.47 when Butch Bryan fouled and went on to beat a broken Jim Nicoll in the final. Another big win followed at the Eighth Grand American AHRA race at Bristol. There, Pete qualified #1 with a 6.78 and ran 6.89/199.55, a 7.00 over Don Garlits, a single, and a final 6.83/211.76 to beat Jimmy King's 6.93. At the US Nationals, Pete ran his best ET ever up to this point, a 6.649. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the third round. Then, he failed to qualify for both the NHRA Supernats and the AHRA World Finals; a broken rear end slowed him there. Pete ended the year at the NHRA World Finals with a 6.76, which was good for eighth in the qualifying order. On October 18, he ran in Atlanta's $10,000 meet, where he made it to the final before losing to Dick LaHaie. Pete's best NHRA times were the 6.649/215.82.
