Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Car was built as an alcohol dragster and converted to Top Fuel in 1987. It was raced in Top Fuel in 1987 only. | Mike made his Top Fuel debut at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He made his licensing runs during the weekend of the event. Darrell Gwynn helped him out here to ease his transition from alcohol to Nitro. His first run was a 11.77/70 followed by a 6.92/110. Finally, he ran a 5.72/233 that qualified for the race. He won his first-round race over John Carey's 5.88/236 with a 5.61/236, but in the semifinals, he came up against his teacher, Gwynn. Mike was on a good run until his engine let go, and he slowed to 6.10/165 in a loss. The following week (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.59/255.02 was good for the second alternate. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There he was the third alternate for the show with a 5.89/253.16 best. He had much better luck at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 5.67/257.14 beat an engine-blowing Joe Amato in round one, while in the semifinals, Richard Holcomb fouled against him and Brotherton advanced with an easy 7.13/129.12. His run came to an end in the finals where Gwynn unloaded Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.39/261 to win. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but just one week later (May 31), he was on the pole at Bristol with a career best 5.53 at 257. Mike beat John Davisson in round one, but a 5.64/260.11 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Hank Endres' quicker-leaving 5.65/258. He then went to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals, but he didn't have much luck there as he lost to Gene Snow in the first round. Then it was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.68/248.61 qualified #14. He picked up slightly to a 5.63/247.52 in the first round, to advance when Bill Mullins fouled. In round two Mike fouled and shut off to 5.98 against Amato who won with a 5.52/259. |

Notes: John kicked off his NHRA season at Pomona, qualifying #14 at 5.693/255.53 and winning round one over Billy Meyer with a 5.732/251.25. He then surprised Mark Oswald with a 5.838/209.05 over Mark's shutoff pass. Invading Aussie Graeme Cowin stopped John in the semis in a good 5.760/259.81 to 5.925/259.81 match. John kept it going at Gainesville, qualifying #13 at 5.829/250.06, but Doc Halladay defeated him in round one. John stayed consistent, qualifying at Atlanta with a 5.812/253.39 that took the #9 slot. He was now using a Dodge Daytona body. He again did not get past the first-round, as Kenny Bernstein got around his shutoff pass. John tried the high altitude of Bandimere for the Mile High Nationals. He only went 6.247/228.83, but that was good enough to claim the bump spot with three competitors on the outside. But the first-round told the same story. Another eight-second shutoff and Billy Meyer advancing. John turned it around at the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. He went 5.693/260.26 for the #7 qualifying position, and he parlayed that into a nice 5.598/261.17 first-round win over Darrell Amberson. In round two, John slowed to the 6.40s, and Billy Meyer took advantage of that with a 5.749 win. Away from the NHRA tour, John went 5.81/244 at AHRA Spokane Finals in August and won the race over Craig Epperly in Ray Strasser's Corvette. John was at the Texas Motorplex on October 4 for the NHRA Chief Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.610/258.91. In the opening round, he got some revenge on Graeme Cowin with a 5.726/252.52 that beat Cowin's smoked-in and shut-down effort. In round two, it was John who smoked the tires against Don Prudhomme. Martin shut down to a 7.910/105.60. He followed the NHRA tour to Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals. Unfortunately, his 5.894/246.50 best was good for the third alternate. John attended the NHRA Finals to wrap the season. He did not qualify there, as his 5.773/251.25 was the sixth alternate in a field with 31 cars trying to get in. All in all, it was a good season for the independent campaigner. |

Notes: This was the former "Karmic Debris" car of Kevin Siebert. Nimmo was always going to have the only Starfire-bodied car in any show. At Quaker City Dragway in July, he also had the only Donovan-powered car to qualify for the third NHRA Division Three race. His 6.76/207.85 qualified #4, and in the first round, he made a 6.80/206.89 solo when his opponent, David Nedock, failed to show. In the semi-final, his 6.77/203.61 fell to eventual winner Don Gay Jr's 6.53/211. Dan drove it to a career-best of 6.57/212.01 in a first-round loss to Dal Denton at the IHRA Fallnationals in Bristol. They also ran 6.64 at Indy. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 1988, Volume 3, Number 3, had 6.274, which was too fast for this car. Photo from 1988 Bristol, Tenn. |

Notes: The team qualified #9 at Pomona with a 6.089/233.70. They lost to James Warren in round one, 6.01/230 to an off pace 7.05/177. They qualified #15 at Gainesville with a 6.473/215.82 and took an upset win over Jeb Allen in round one, 6.381/221.67 to 6.56/217. Opponent John Wiebe did not show for round two, so Jim got another win, rolling through at 9.22/75. The dream ended in round three, as Gary Beck ran 6.66/174 to defeat Jim's 15-second shut-off run. That was the team's final NHRA national event of the year. They were at Indianapolis in April for the NHRA Division Three opener. A 6.35 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, Jim fouled against Jim Walther in the opening round. In May, they were at Edgewater Park for a UDRA Circuit race. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.51/195.22 qualified #3. But Jim was unable to run in eliminations and was replaced by Frank Hawley. The team entered NHRA Indianapolis but did not show. They also ran 6.11 at Beech Bend. AKA Fighting Irish. |

Notes: Dean started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Forty-seven cars were attempting to make the sixteen-car field. Lee ran 7.47/185.64 to qualify #4, and he was the quickest Pontiac in the show. In the opening round, he fell off to a 7.55/183.82, which lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.52/179. The NHRA Gatornationals continued to attract a lot of cars as 45 attempted to qualify. His 7.49/188.48 (Top Speed) qualified #6. He beat Nick Nikolis in round one, with a 7.53/185.68. In the second round, he got out of shape and shut off against eventual winner Butch Leal. At Atlanta, Lee's 7.51/184.80 qualified #8. In the opening round, his 7.51/185.43 defeated Larry Morgan's 7.60/183. Leal got him again in round two, where his 7.59/181.70 fell to the Butch's 7.53/183. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Even with 34 cars competing, he continued to qualify in the top half of the field. His 7.56/184.35 got him the #6 spot in the show. Both he and his opponent, Kenny Delco, ran 7.69 in the first round, (Lee at 181.92), but Delco got the "win" light. Lee ran 7.599/183.76 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 87, the #3 qualifier. |

Notes: Jeff was the eleventh alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 7.59/180.36. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, a best of 7.63/180.63 also failed to make the show (ninth alternate). He did better at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.70/180.68 best was the third alternate for the show. He made the field at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.589/181.89 qualified #10. His first-round 7.69/179.96 lost to Butch Leal's 7.59/182. He also qualified at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where his 7.641/181.52 qualified #12. Jeff's 7.68/177.86 in the first round, advanced when Don Campanello fouled, and in round two, Joe Lepone also fouled against him, and Velde moved on with a 7.60/180.86. His run ended in the semifinals, where Leal's 7.54/184 put a stop to Jeff's 7.69/180.36. Unfortunately, it was back to not qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. There, his 7.61/181.23 was the sixth alternate. The team did not run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but they were back on tour at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Things did not go well, as Velde's 7.74/178.60 was the ninth alternate for the show. Jeff also failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his 7.64/186.29 was the twenty-second alternate. He also ran 7.64 (at 181.15) in a non-qualifier (fourteenth alternate) at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. The best NHRA times were 7.572 at the World Finals and 186.29 at Indy (DNQ). Did Jeff run 7.541 somewhere this year? |
