Notes: Eckman started the season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was still running his '87 Camaro at the event. His 7.47/185.83 was the first alternate. He was very impressive during qualifying at Gainesville In March for the NHRA Gatornationals. Fifty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show, and his 7.361/189.35 qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson's 7.35/188. Unfortunately, his 7.39/188.83 lost to Alban Gauthier's 7.37/186 in the opening round of eliminations. The following week he was at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. A 7.49 qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field, and he lasted until round two before fouling (7.60) against Warren Johnson, who advanced with a 7.40. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Once again, he lasted until round two, where his 7.48/186.72 lost to Charlie Garrett's 7.48/185 in a close race. Jerry ran 7.413/186.53 IHRA Ennis 4/88. The Texas Nationals had been postponed by rain, but after qualifying |#6 with a 7.36/187.42, he went into round two, where his 7.39/185.79 lost to Tim Nabors' 7.32/189. Thirty-nine cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. His 7.47 qualified #8. He beat Reid Whisnant in the first round before losing to Butch Leal in the next round. The following week (May 22), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. As was the pattern lately, his 7.65/183.03 lost to Nabors' 7.55/184 in round two. Shortly after that, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 7.44/186.76 qualified #8. He did OK on the NHRA tour with two runner-up finishes and the Top Speed of the Meet at Sonoma at 190.55. The Gainesville and Sonoma times were Jerry's best of the year. |

Notes: Ran 7.659/179.64 at 1986 NHRA Winters with the old paint job. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. Made it to round three at the Mile Highs, losing to Glidden. The best NHRA times were a 7.560 at Maple Grove, which beat Joe Lepone on a holeshot in round one, and 183.52 in a third alternate finish at Indy. Stan was at Baton Rouge in June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. (With new paint) Unfortunately, his 7.76/178.07 best was only good enough for the third alternate. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.72/179.06. Things went a little better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #13 with a 7.67/178.64, but in the opening round of eliminations, eventual winner Butch Leal ran 7.65/183 to beat his 7.68/179.21. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 7.62/179.71 failed to qualify. Things went a whole lot better at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals; not only did he qualify, but he also lasted until the semifinals. A 8.08/170.45 got him the #15 spot in the field. An opening round 8.32/166.14 advanced when his opponent, Dempsey Hardy, broke a fuel pump. In round two, Leal broke a transmission, and Mizell's 8.17/167 moved on. His luck ran out in the semifinal when he came up against the race's eventual winner Bob Glidden. Stan ran his best time of eliminations, an 8.12/168.66, but it finished far behind Glidden's 7.92/174. |

Notes: Don started the season in a '69 Cuda that he raced at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lost in the first round, to Ronnie Sox. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 10.22 and lasted until round two, where he lost to Wally Booth's Camaro. On February 15, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 10.12 qualified #7, and he advanced past round one when Sam Carroll fouled against him. In round two, he lost to Don Carlton driving one of Sox and Martin's cars. Rockingham hosted the AHRA Pro-Am Championships in April, and Don was there. He advanced when Ed Miller pulled a wheelstand and busted his oil pan on the landing in the first round. But in round two, he fouled against Sox. He had some bad luck at the fourth AHRA Grand American race at Frontier Raceway. Don qualified #4, but before eliminations, he was changing engines. The hoist broke and dropped the engine onto the grill and radiator support on the front of the car. The damage was too much for the car to run. Grotheer was at Dallas for the Division 3 Opener on May 3. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 10.64 lost to Jim Hayter's 10.32. A week later, he was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. Forty-four Pro Stock cars were there, and Don's 'Cuda was one of them. He beat Hubert Platt and then lost in round three. Early in June, he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He beat Eddie Schartman's 10.59 in the first round, with a 10.42, but he lost in round two. He also lost in round two a week later (June 14) at the NHRA Springnationals. A first Round 10.31 beat Ronnie Mercer, but he fouled against Booth in the second round. Grotheer won at Seattle's Pro Stock Championships in July. He qualified #1 with a 10.27 and then ran 10.28 in the first round, over a fouling Jim Petrie. He had an easy second-round race and then ran another 10.28 in the semifinals to beat Dick Tutino. In the final, he ran Bob Lambeck. Don set both ends of the track record while winning with a 10.10/136.36 over Lambeck's 10.43/135. His next stop was at York for the NHRA Summernationals. Don qualified #4 with a 10.06/137.40. He ran another 10.06 at 138.46 in the first round, to beat a fouling John Petrie. In round two, his Cuda developed problems and slowed to 15.05 that lost to Herb McCandless' 10.06/138. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9. Gary Hajek opened his own shop and built some nice cars. Unfortunately, he was murdered in that shop. | Gary Hajek and his dad pulled into Darlington with their brand new Firebird. It had yet to move under its own power. Gary made a mandatory half-track pass before returning to the line later for the first qualifying session. Even though he spun the tires through the first two gears, he ended up running 7.50/187.11. The father and son team were satisfied with the run, but knew that it ran even better during the night session. Even they didn't expect the 7.36/189.47 that showed up on the scoreboard. That run qualified #4 for the IHRA Winternationals. He went on to beat Jerry Haas in the first round, before losing a close one to Billy Ewing. Hajek had gotten the "jump" off the line, but his 7.41/188 failed to hold back Ewing's 7.38/191. Not bad for the car's debut. Gary worked for Jerry Haas race cars and he and his dad built the car. They did it all from the roll cage to the aluminum interior. The Hajeks were quick to credit Haas with help on the project which was built in just over a month. The engine was a 672 Olds from Wayne County Speed Shop. |
