Notes: Brown started his season at Miami-Hollywood in January for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #9, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Paul Smith who was driving the "Fireball Vega." Smith reset the track ET record while beating Brown in their opening round race. Cliff was at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an easy field to make as his 10.13 qualified #13. In the first round, he lost a supercharger and the race to Jim Paoli. In June, he was in Atlanta for their Funny Car Invitational. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, Cliff ran a 7.08 to beat Shirl Greer's 7.22 in Billy Holt's new Vega. In round two, he lost another supercharger but still won when Frank Oglesby broke a reverser. The race was then halted by rain. Cliff used a stock stroke hemi to consistent success. |

Notes: Chassis info from Jim's daughter. Jokerst had a great run going at Miami-Hollywood's Funny Car race on January 9th. It was a sixteen-car field that had 19 cars attempting to qualify. He made the show, and, in the semifinals, he got around Jake Johnston driving Gene Snow's second car. I have no times from the race (I wish I did). In the final, he came up against Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." He met his match there, but a runner-up finish in an impressive field of cars was pretty good. |

Notes: Frank was at OCIR on May 18 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. All cars were to run three races. In his first race, he was up against Willie Borsch. Pisano got a great jump on the lights and held it to win with his first "seven," a 7.93/182.92 that beat Willie's quicker and faster 7.85/189. In his second race, he got another holeshot win when Gary Reed's late 8.09/193 lost to Frank's 8.25/177.86. In his third race, an 8.29/171.00 beat Leon Fitzgerald's troubled 9.32/117. There were two Pisano Bros. Corvairs, one with doors and one without doors. |

Notes: AKA the Carpetbagger. Dennis' nickname came from the fact that he owned a carpet company. Baca hired Jim Davis to build the 238" chassis for his new car for '73. It took three months and $12,000 to build. The engine was a 426 Hemi that used an Ashland Crank to up the cubes to 486. The bore remained stock. KB rods were used with Brooks pistons. Engle was his camshaft of choice. A Cragar manifold held a Larry Bowers-built blower in place. The 85% nitro mix was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. The estimated output was 1,800 hp. The dragster used a Detroit Locker rear with 4.10 gears. Dennis started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. He ran 6.47 to qualify #4 in the sixteen-car show. In the opening round, he improved to 6.41/225.56 to defeat Randy Allison's 6.49. In the second round, he slowed to an off-pace 7.04/158.73 that lost to eventual winner Frank Prock's 6.42/222. He had another early loss at the second OCIR All-Pro race. He had run 6.24/230.76 (Top Speed) to qualify second in the eight-car field behind John Wiebe's 6.22. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.90/222 in the first round, and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.51/212. There was no traction at Pomona for the Winternationals, and Baca's poor 7.03/220.58 still qualified in the top half (#12) of the 32 car field. He beat Rick Ramsey and Steve Carbone in the first two rounds. In the third round, a 6.73/225.56 beat Carl Olson. In the semifinals, a 6.72/227.27 beat Gaines Markley's 6.84/225. Unfortunately, a final round 7.07/213 gave Baca the runner-up spot to Don Garlits' 6.74/235. The following week (February 25), Dennis went to Sacramento for an eight-car show. His 6.71 qualified #5, and just like the previous week, he lost to Garlits. This time, it came in round one, where he smoked the tires while "Big Daddy" advanced with a 6.60/223. Shortly after that came the Bakersfield March Meet. It was another 32 car affair, and Baca qualified #13. But in round one, his troubled, shut off, 7.15 lost to Fred Mooneyham. Fresno Dragway held its Winter Race of Champions event on March 18, and Dennis qualified on the pole for the sixteen-car field with a 6.14. An opening round 6.40/231.95 advanced when Dwight Salisbury pitched a blower. In the second round, Baca fouled against Bill Dunlap. In April, he competed at the California State Championships held at Sacramento. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #7. In the first round, his 6.48/218.98 lost to the eventual winner James Warren, who ran 6.16/225 to advance. On May 12, he was back at OCIR for its Constructor's Championships. It was a 32 car field, and Baca's 6.43 got him the #6 spot. An opening round 6.41/228.42 beat Carl Olson's 6.83/198 in T.B. Smallwood's car. He ran an easy solo (8.62/104.52) in round two when Les Allen's goggles broke, and he could not run. But in round three, Dennis smoked the tires and shut off to a 10.69/73.95 loss against Billy Tidwell's 6.66/218. Dennis ran 6.43 at Orange County's Big 4 event on 5/12/73 and 6.286/231.36 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. |

Notes: Guy was at Englishtown on May 9th for the NHRA Division One Opener. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.22/227.27. In the opening round of eliminations, his opponent, Jim Kowchefski, shut off, so Boucher soloed with a 6.50/211.26. But in the semifinals, Guy had severe tire shake and shut down to a 7.00/154.63 loss to Larry Bucher. |

Notes: Carol won the King of Kings Funny Car Championships at Delmar in April. She ran 6.98 and 6.81 to reach the final, where her 6.83/204.09 beat John Paris' 7.08/210 for the title. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 5, she qualified #7 with a 6.73/208.09. In the first round, opponent Russell Prince broke, and Burkett advanced with a 6.76/203.61. In the semifinals, she fouled against Frank Manzo and shut down to 7.16/187.11. The next Division 1 race was run two weeks later at Cayuga Dragway. Only four cars showed, and Carol's 7.20/194.59 qualified #2 behind Bob Newberry's 6.72/210. She ran 6.95/205.94 to beat John Armstrong's 7.20/197 and met with Newberry in the final. Her off-pace 7.33/187.69 finished runner-up to Bob's 6.79/212. | At the NHRA Budweiser Summernationals at Englishtown (Her only National Event of the season), she qualified #11 with a 6.627/211.56 & ran #3 Qualifier Bob Newberry in Round 1. Unfortunately, Bunny's 6.492/213.27 was a losing effort compared to the eventual runner-up Newberry's 6.430/217.70. At the KMart/Polaroid US All Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown on 9/22/85, Bunny ran John Paris in Round 1. John ran 6.58/208.33 to Bunny's, losing 6.67/211.26. In the consolation round, Bunny ran Leroy Dewdney and defeated him with a 6.57/214.28 to Dewdney's losing 6.87/211.01. | If anyone knows any better numbers for Bunny in 1985, it would be appreciated. - Rob McCabe |
