Notes: On June 24, John was at Maryland International for the NHRA Division One race. In the opening round of eliminations, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.65/220.58 that defeated Jeff Rapp's 8.00/137. He and his opponent, George Johnson, fought for traction in the semifinals, and Johnson's 7.11/208 beat Speelman's 7.33/198.67. The ride wasn't over for Speelman as the Vega turned into a "fireball" just before the lights. He got it stopped and was ok, but the car was toast. This car was the former "Las Vega" BB/FC of Charlie Minnich. Photo from the 1979 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. |

Notes: Harlan attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was the ninth alternate. Still not bad, considering that 58 cars were trying to get into the sixteen-car show. In March, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." Thompson ran a 6.96/200.00 to put the "Max" on the trailer in the first round. In the second round, he faced Don Schumacher. Once again, he put down the favored car. This time his 6.93/205.01 beat Don's 7.09/211. Unfortunately, the Mustang lost fire in the semifinals and watched as eventual winner Pat Foster soloed into the final. At the Gatornationals, a best of 6.690/215.82 was the second alternate. In April, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He lost to Jim Liberman's tire-smoking 7.74 in the first round, when his car failed to shift out of low gear. At NHRA Englishtown, he qualified #8 at 6.566/210.24 but shut off in the first round, against Tom Crevasse. He qualified #6 at Sanair with a 6.816, but Dale Emery defeated him in round one, 5.73/216 to 7.810 (no speed recorded). Harlan sat in the middle of the DNQ pack at Indy with a 6.64/210.77 best. That was the team's last national event of the year. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: Harlan qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.62/222.22. A 6.93 in the first round, lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.49 in the "Blue Max.” Harlan won the NHRA Division 1 WCS race at Maple Grove Dragway in June 1975 when he ran 6.36/222.22 to upset a heavily favored Don Prudhomme. |

Notes: Worsham qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.23/269.62. In the opening round, he improved to 5.084/291.73 to beat Jim Epler's 5.61/199.The car broke against Kenji Okazaki in round two.He qualified #15 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.40/266.50.A much-improved 5.22/289.66 stopped Al Hofmann's 5.59/206 in the first round.Unfortunately,he lost a blower belt in round two and slowed to 5.25/264.62 in a loss to eventual winner,John Force's 5.23/285.He then went to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals where he ended up as the second alternate at 5.48. Major fire at Gatornats, got burnt. Freddie Neely finished out '94 in Del's car, but Del went on to drive Top Fuel. Photo from the 1994 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. |

Notes: The team raced at three NHRA national events in 1999. At Joliet, Ronny was the third alternate at 5.445/278.86. He also was the fourth alternate at NHRA Memphis at 7.403/109.77. Ronny was the third alternate at NHRA Ennis Fall at 5.311/248.07. At one of the events, the car caught fire and burned again in 1999 after doing the same thing in 1998. Notes: Twig attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.540/221.67 failed to make the 6.45 "bump." He was at Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener, where he ran 7.01 to qualify #5. Unfortunately, that forced him to run low qualifier, Don Prudhomme in the first round. Few people were beating the "Snake" at this time, and sure enough, Don's 6.54/193 put Zeigler's 6.89/220.58 on the trailer. Zeigler ran well enough to make the final at the second Olympia All-Pro Series race. He got there by stopping Richard Rogers in the first round, with a 6.58/217.91. In the semifinals, a 6.76/222.77 beat Don Rae's 7.78/130. But in the final, a 6.56/229.00 finished runner-up to Gordie Bonin's 6.32/230. He then went to Edmonton International for the NHRA Division Six race. An opening round 6.62 beat a tire-smoking Kenny Goodell at 7.08, but his semifinal 6.67 lost to the eventual winner Bill Spevacek's 6.51. He faced Goodell in a best of three match race at Woodburn in mid-July. Twig won all three of the races. Goodell's Demon broke in the first round, and Zeigler soloed with a 6.69/206.42. In the second race, both smoked the tires, but Twig recovered first to win with a 7.49/204.54 over Kenny's 7.52/176. In the final race, Kenny fouled, and Zeigler made an easy pass to win the match. His next stop was at Seattle for its Nitro Jam event. It featured four Top Fuel cars racing four FC's in two rounds of racing. The FC's were given a .30 handicap. In his first race, his 6.68/221.51 lost to Ernie Hall's 6.34/229. In the second race, he ran 6.70/223.41 to beat Gaines Markley's 6.35/230. Soon after, Portland held its big 32 car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, and Twig was there. In round one of racing, his 6.43 beat Ken McLean. Another 6.43 at 225.56 beat Nick Harmon in round two, and a great 6.40 beat Gary Densham in round three. It was getting dark, so they ran the two Low ET cars off in the final. On September 21, Twig was competing at the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. He qualified #8 with a 6.515/225.56, and in the first round, Gary Rogers fouled against him. Unfortunately, Twig stayed in it, got out of shape, and crashed hard into the guardrail. He was OK, but the car was not. Craig "Twig" Zeigler, from 1963 HS yearbook. |

Notes: Photo from the 1977 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. I believe that the partner was Mark Campbell, who was a one-time driver of a Jeg's Pro Stock Vega. I think he was also involved with the Cheeseman Bros. on their Pro Stock entry. This dragster is indeed an AA/DA. It just happens to be lined up next to Marvin Graham's TF, waiting to get into the staging lanes at the far end of the track. If you look closely at the picture, you can see AA/DA next to the competition number. - Thomas Nagy. Chuck ran 6.97 at Edgewater, 6.94 at Columbus, 6.95 at Indy. |
