Notes: Pickett started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.93 qualified #5. His 6.98 beat Tom Ferraro's 7.27 in the "Rat Trap" in the opening round of eliminations. A second-round 6.85/219.51 lost to Butch Maas' 6.70/209 in the M/T Grand Am. He then went to OCIR for its second All-Pro race, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Pickett did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, and he had trouble qualifying at the next couple races, but he made the show at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car show with a 7.34. Unfortunately, he got crossed up in the first round, against Twig Zeigler and shut off. He was back at OCIR on March 24 for the final All-Pro race. The last race featured sixteen-car PRO fields. His 6.96 got him the #12 spot. The car broke in the opening round against Mike Van Sant in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" car. He competed at the Las Vegas Open on April 8, where his first-round 7.70 beat Bryan Raines 7.85 in Nick Harmon's car. In the semifinal, his 7.33 failed to beat Mert Littlefield, who advanced at 7.18. At the OCIR Hang Ten Funny Car 500, Pickett's 7.10 qualified #13. He faced the Pat Foster-driven Barry Setzer Vega in the opening round. Bob shut down early in their race while Foster moved into the second round with a 6.83. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Memorial Day Championships. This was an eight-car show, and Roger Garten's 6.83/224 in the opening round stopped his 7.03/208.33. In mid-June, OCIR held its Lions Championships. Pickett qualified #5 in the eight-car field, with a 7.09; this set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Littlefield. Bob had issues in their race and shut off. While the car wasn't winning many races, it was chosen the "best appearing car" at Irwindale for the second NHRA Division Seven race. But his 6.95/216.34 lost to Rick Ramsey's 6.73/189 in the "Keeling and Clayton" Pinto. He scored a big one on June 30 when he won the OCIR Nitromethane Championships over a sixteen-car field. He got an easy solo in round one, when Larry Christopherson's Vega broke on the burnout. In the second round, Garten's troubled 7.96/130 lost to his 6.95/213.27, and in the semifinal, he had a close race with John Lombardo that saw Bob's 6.88/213.77 beat John's 6.89/191 by inches. He faced Littlefield in the final, and Mert had problems and shut off while Pickett ran 6.89/214.28 for the win. A few days later, he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July Championships. Unfortunately, there his 6.96/211.76 in round one, lost to Joe Lee's 6.81/212. It was back to OCIR on July 22 for the PDA Championships. Once again, Pickett lost early; this time, his 7.08/214.28 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.90/209 in the first round, of eliminations. Bob qualified on the "bump" at Tulsa's 32 car show with a 6.84/215.31 for the AHRA National Challenge race. He improved to 6.73/205 in the first round, to beat Jim Dunn, while in round two, his 6.88 lost to Dale Emery's 6.61. Pickett failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but it was a tough show to make as almost 50 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen spots. At the end of September, he was at Irwindale's Grand Prix race. He qualified an unlucky #9 in the sixteen-car show forcing him to run low qualifier, Don Prudhomme in the opening round. Picket tried hard in their race, but his 6.98/214.79 was no match for the "Snake's" 6.57/203. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park, where Bob was a DNQ at 6.718/218.44.

Notes: Tom qualified #4 at Pomona with his best NHRA speed of the year, 6.320/227.84. He fell off to an 8.93/92 in round one, that fell to Charlie Therwhanger's 6.40/212. Prock qualified #12 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.55/221.13. He reached the final by beating Gordie Bonin in the first round, with a 6.62/224.43, and in round two, he fouled away a 6.68 but got a second chance when his opponent, Kosty Ivanof, crossed the centerline. He stopped Raymond Beadle's 6.78 in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals with a 6.68. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme, but Prudhomme's engine was hurting. So Prock was too single for the win, but his car broke a rear end. Both teams were given extra time to repair. Tom could not repair, so the "Snake" spit and puttered to a 6.52/172 for the victory. His next race was the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood. There a 6.56 qualified #4 in the eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.67 beat Shirl Greer. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinals. He won a best of three match race against Ivanof in New England. In the first race of the match, Prock lost a blower, and Kosty won with a 6.71, but Tom came back to win the next two rounds and the match with a best of 6.74. He was at Atco for the CARS Magazine race, but he lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, when he had problems and shut down to 9.03/130.62. More problems followed at Columbus. Tom qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.56/220.04, but in his first-round race against Dale Emery, the car coughed up its blower and caught fire. Prock got it stopped and got out OK, but the car was badly burned. It wasn't long before the team was up and running again, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Prock put the car into the field with a 6.55/220.04 (#13). He beat Bob Pickett driving Mickey Thompson's Grand Am in the first round, and a 6.66/222.77 in round two stopped Tom McEwen's 6.86/189. In the semifinals, he ran Ivanof, and a 6.64/210.77 put Kosty's 6.78/222 on the trailer. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and once again, the car let him down. Tom slowed to 11.49 in a runner-up finish to Liberman's 6.49. He did win the Englishtown Free Girls Funny Car night event, a final round 6.43 (Low ET) at 194.80 beat Dodger Glenn's 6.69/218 in the final. Tom made a third NHRA National event final at the Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 6.48/223.32, just behind Prudhomme's 6.46/207. These two would meet in the final. Prock's first-round 6.54 beat Bonin and a semifinal 6.45/217.39 took out Pat Foster's tire-smoking 7.08/221 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In the final, Prock slowed to 7.08/121.08 in a loss to Prudhomme's 6.45/224. The team was the fourth alternate at Indy, running 6.486/225.56. They qualified #5 at Seattle (6.446/223.38) but lost a close round one race via holeshot to surprising local Richard Rogers, 6.61/218.44 to 6.60/198.23. Tom qualified #4 at Ontario for the World Finals with a 6.230/222.77. In round one, he beat Bob Pickett, 6.66/168 to 7.10/225, but broke against John Lombardo in round two. Tom ran 6.25/225.00 at the Orange County International Raceway Manufacturer's Meet 11/75. AKA Utica Flash. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio.

Notes: The car ran 6.16 under the Care-Free banner. Won the infamous PRO race at NY National with an all-time best of 6.19. Also ran 6.23 at NHRA Summers and 231.95. The 6.01/235 was at a Lebanon Valley match race. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Prudhomme drove this car to Funny Car win at '74 Gators, was upset by Snow at Springs, and defeated Billy Meyer at Indy for back-to-back Indy Funny Car wins. | Regarding Prudhomme at Lebanon Valley in '74. I wasn't there the August night he ran 6.01. I was there a month earlier when he ran 6.16, which was quicker than the national record by a few hundredths, as I recall. So everyone was talking about the great ETs at Lebanon (Mineo had run in the 6.20s with the Coke Circuit that year - unheard-of numbers for him). But then, in '75, Prudhomme's Monza could not go below 6.40. He never ran a 6.0 there again, not with his Monzas, not with his Arrows (he did run in the 'twenties' with the Arrow, maybe the 'teens' once or twice). I asked Tommy Ivo about it, and he said that back in 1974, the track's starting line beams were positioned too high for FCs, and the cars were staging with their fenders, and the clocks weren't starting until after the entire car had left the line and cleared the beams. I don't know if or how this is true, but it's what Ivo told me. Many northeast Funny Car racers were unaware of this explanation, so I don't know why Ivo had the dirt, and the others didn't. - David Hapgood | Prudhomme set the NHRA National Record at E-town with a 6.26. - Danny White | Prudhomme started the year with a new sponsor. The Army sponsorship lasted through the '80 season. The '74 season started at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race on January 12. It was a sixteen-car field, and Don set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.37. He got to the final by running 6.49 in the first round, over John Lombardo, who broke, a 6.51 beat Danny Ongais in round two while a semifinal 6.52/193.96 advanced when Sush Matsubara broke. His final-round opponent was Gordie Bonin in Roland Leong's "Hawaiian." Prudhomme had problems and shut down to 8.19/111.24 in a runner-up finish to Bonin's 6.61/207. He debuted a new John Buttera built Vega at the AHRA Winternationals, which he ran for just two events. Even with the runner-up finish at Beeline, he parked the car after the NHRA Winternationals and went back to his trusty 'Cuda. He had it running at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #2 with a 6.45, but he failed to reach the finals. Don returned to winning ways at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he again qualified #2 with a 6.52/201.34. It was interesting that Prudhomme had been a long-time Goodyear supporter, but he showed up running M&H rubber there. He beat Al Hanna, Dale Emery, and Paul Smith to reach the final against Don Schumacher. In the final, the "Snake" set Low ET with a 6.38 at 225 to win over Schumacher's 6.74. At Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, Prudhomme qualified #4 and then slept on the line in the first round, where his 6.42/217.51 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.55/210. A week later (April 6), he was at OCIR for another AHRA Grand American race. A 6.51/225.66 in qualifying was good for both Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. It was a sixteen-car show, and Don beat Dave Condit in the first round, with a 6.51/220.58, but in round two, he got out of shape against Ed McCulloch and shut off. Another win came at the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at Irwindale. It was supposed to be a 32 car show, but only 30 cars ran. Prudhomme got stronger as the race progressed. He ran 6.67, 6.45, 6.40, and a 6.31 in the semifinals over Schumacher. In the final, he faced Dunn. Don ran a track record 6.28 at 228.42 (Top Speed) for the victory. He also won the AHRA Grand American Nationals at Green Valley Raceway on May 8. The race was supposed to run on May 5, but rain halted the show. The "Snake" qualified #1 with a 6.36. But in round two, he improved to 6.23 while beating Gene Snow. A 6.31 in the semifinals stopped Charlie Therwhanger and advanced Don to the final against Jim Nicoll. Jim ran a good 6.43, but it wasn't even close as Don ran another 6.23 at 234 to win. At the Seattle Northwest Open, Don was running strong again. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.43/191.08. In the first round, he was upset by McCulloch when Don crossed the centerline. Somehow he was reinstated for the semifinals, where the "Snake" beat Mike Miller with a 6.48/175. He faced McCulloch a second time for the final round. Ed had also been running strong with a track record 6.37. In the final, Ed got out of shape and shut off while Don got the win with a 6.55/192. He took home another AHRA trophy at Dragway 42 on May 19. He qualified #1 and then ran 6.39/214.28 in the semifinal over Richard Tharp driving for Schumacher. In the final, Snow fouled against him, and Don set a track record 6.32 for the win. He didn't qualify very well (#8) for the sixteen-car show at the AHRA Springnationals. The race was run at the brand-new Spokane track. This was its first event. But on race day, Don came through. He beat Mert Littlefield and Henry Harrison before dropping Danny Ongais' 6.41 in the semifinals with a 6.36 (Low ET). A final round 6.40/213.76 defeated Tom Hoover, who was now driving Don's former Vega. The next week (June 9) found Don at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.39/224.40. A 6.42/215.82 beat Therwhanger and in round two, a 6.45/193.54 beat a tire-smoking Tom McEwen. Another 6.45/216.87 in the semifinals beat Kosty Ivanof, who also smoked the tires. This put Prudhomme in the final against Snow. Gene also ran 6.45 in the semifinals, so it looked to be a good race. But in the final, Don made his worst run of eliminations, a 6.68/215.31 that lost to Snow's 6.46/201. After that, Prudhomme went out and won the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet.

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis, Indiana, where he did not qualify with his best NHRA national event times, 6.570/214.28. He ran 6.44 at Union Grove and was at Rockingham on Sept. 22 for the IHRA US Open Championships, where he qualified #2 with a 6.62 behind Paul Smith's similar 6.62 in the "Fireball Vega." He ran well, reaching the semifinals before his 6.85 lost to Ron Colson's motor-blowing 6.56 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Since Colson could not return for the final, Savage got back in to run Gene Snow for the title. Unfortunately, an off-pace 7.13/203.13 finished runner-up to Snow's 6.65/202. Savage was doing an article for National Dragster in '78. At that time, he mentioned that he had run a 6.41 best driving the "Hawaiian" in '74.

Notes: Rick attempted to qualify at several NHRA national events this year with marginal success. He ran 14.104/52.94 at the Pomona Winters, 6.378/166.35 at Phoenix, 15.931/45.16 at Houston, 6.397/214.59 at Memphis, 6.041/238.72 at Englishtown, and 8.389/83.99 at Columbus. All his efforts were within the top five DNQs, but at Columbus, it paid off. He got into the show and nearly upset Richard Hartman in round one, 6.44/196 to 6.483/186.45. An 8.290/112.61 was the third alternate at Topeka, and a 9.888/82.41 missed at Brainerd. Rick attempted to qualify for the NHRA Chief National,s but he had trouble. The best run he made was 7.481/113.35 which was a long way off the 5.26 "bump". He then went to Pomona for the NHRA World Finals where he ran even worse. A 9.682/67.72 was his best there.

Notes: Skuza's first NHRA event of the season was at the Gatornationals. He had lots of problems there, and his 11.20-74.44 best failed to qualify. He did better at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where although he still failed to qualify, he improved to 6.39/155.89. Dean was the first alternate at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 6.06 best. Things really clicked at Englishtown in May for the Mopar Parts Nationals. His 5.26/274.80 qualified #9. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Cellone in the opening round. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.44/254.02. The next stop was at Topeka at the end of June for the NHRA Western Nationals. Skuza qualified #9 with a 5.41/271.98. But once again, he fell in the first round, this time to Kenji Okazaki. He bypassed the following few events before returning to the schedule at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't an issue. Dean's 7.61/112.55 qualified #14. This time he lost to Chuck Etchell's in round one. Then came Indy, Dean's 5.34/284.09 just made the field qualifying on the "bump." In the first round, his 5.39/269.46 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.15/285. He stepped it up at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.25/277.17 qualified #7. Despite the good qualifying effort, he still lost in the first round to Okazaki. He ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.08/291.07 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Heartland Nationals. He also got his first-round win of the year when his 5.25/274.47 beat Tom Hoover's 5.35/271. In round two, his 5.26/274.89 lost to Freddie Neely's 5.16/288. He also ran well at the NHRA Chief Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.19/284.45. A slightly better 5.17/290.13 fell o Del Worsham's 5.17/292 in the first round. Dean ran his best ET of 5.087/291.07 at the NHRA Sears/Craftsman Nats, Topeka 1993. He ran 5.088/294.69 for his best speed at the 1993 World Finals. Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio, a race that Snow won. Ran 6.496 at Fremont AHRA 3/30/74, 6.878 at Gainesville, 6.456 at Columbus, 6.450/221.67 at Englishtown, and 6.456/208.81 at Ontario. | Gene Snow had been a Mopar guy since he started racing funny cars. A lot of the other Mopar runners had been changing over to the sleek Vega bodies in the early '70s. The big Dodge Charger body that Snow was running had the aerodynamic properties of a brick. So finally, after the Pomona Winters, he also made the switch. The new Vega made its first national event debut at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #15 with a 6.87, but he lost in the first round, to another Vega that was making its debut there, Al Segrini driving the "Black Magic.” Snow then went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme. In round two his 6.89 lost to John Lombardo's 6.51, but Lombardo's car broke so he was reinstated for the semifinals. He didn't hang around long though as Ed McCulloch beat him in their race. Still it was a strong outing and the car had run a best of 6.49/217.70. The following week (April 6), he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. A first-round 6.78/206.89 beat Sush Matsubara, but in round two his 6.92/208.33 fell to Don Schumacher's 6.89/192. Gene’s best NHRA national event times were the 6.450/221.67 from Englishtown.
