Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 6.14/228.42 at PRO NY National 8/74. - FY | Jeb did not qualify at the NHRA Winternationals (times not reported). He qualified #7 at Bakersfield's 32 car show in March with a 6.22/230.17. A 6.44 in the first round, beat Leland Kolb, but he fouled against Larry Dixon in round two. The following week (March 17), he qualified #7 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.34/229.00, but lost in the first round, to Jim Murphy, 6.38/221 to 6.56/217. He was the third alternate for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus with a best of 6.371/231.14. Jeb qualified #13 at Sanair at 6.426/229.00, and beat a broken Graham Light in round one, with a 6.440/207.85. He lost to Gary Beck in round two, however, 5.94/242 to 6.35/218. Jeb qualified #16 at Indy at 6.187/235.60. But he fouled in round one, tossing away an otherwise close one to Dick Rosberg, 6.309/229.00 to Jeb’s 6.306/225.56. Jeb wrapped up his NHRA national event season at the World Finals/Supernationals at Ontario, where he finally found the fives, qualifying #3 at 5.955/233.76. He defeated a fouling Rance McDaniel in round one, 6.262/227.84 to 6.406/221.67, but fell to nemesis Gary Beck in round two. Jeb’s otherwise solid 6.049/233.76 lost to Beck’s new national speed record blast of 5.940 at 248.61. Earlier in the season, Jeb ran 6.07 at Portland.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 PHR Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. AKA Preying Mantis. | Allen started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he failed to qualify. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for its East vs. West meet. Six cars were to run, with the winner of the event determined by race wins. In Jeb's first race, his off-pace 6.50/215 lost to a motor-blowing Gary Beck who ran 6.00/212. He won his second race with a 6.27/229.59 over Marvin Graham, who lost a blower on the run. In his third race, Allen's car broke and slowed to a 6.77/151.26 loss to James Warren's 6.02/215. He was supposed to race at Fremont's East vs. West race the next day(Feb.22), but the engine damage kept him from competing there. He also did not run at the Bakersfield March Meet or the NHRA Gatornationals. He was at the NHRA Division Seven opener held at Fremont on March 28. There he qualified #15 with a 6.28/227.27. In round one, his slightly improved 6.20/217.39 beat Arley Langlo. Jeb continued to improve in round two, where his 6.14/232.55 beat Rick Uribe. But in the semifinals, his off-pace 6.67/201.79 lost to Dave Braskett's 6.14/231. The NHRA Division 6 opener was run at Seattle on May 2. Allen qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.22/225.56. An opening round 6.25/225.00 beat Jim Barnard's 6.71/194. In round two, his 6.72/188.67 lost to Bob Mitchell's 6.42/204. The rest of the race was rained out until May 9. On May 8th, Allen was in Portland for the Oregon Open. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.02 qualified #2 behind Beck's 5.99. An opening round 6.18/232.55 beat Herm Petersen's identical 6.18/235. But the run was costly as Jeb hurt the motor and could not return for his semifinal match against Hank Johnson. He was at the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus, where he made six passes, attempting to qualify, but his 6.29 best left him as the second alternate for the show. He always had good luck at Englishtown, and '76 was no different. His 6.07/234.37 qualified #8 for the NHRA Summernationals, and he got a solo in round one, when Grant Stoms was unable to run. A 6.13/210.77 advanced. In round two, his 6.13/227.27 beat Beck's 6.66/161. Allen improved to 6.06/228.42 to beat Dale Funk's similar 6.06/238 in the semifinals. This moved him into the finals against Richard Tharp, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. The two had a good race, but Tharp won his first NHRA national event with a 5.99/244 over Jeb's best of the weekend,6.04/231.36.

Notes: Photo from the 1977 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Lots of 5.80s in winning the Ontario World Finals. Qualified at Ontario at 5.971/238.72. Ran 5.93 at Sacramento. | Dennis was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.97/247.93 and in round one, his 6.07 beat Jim Plummer. A round two 6.00/233.16 took out Bruce Walker, but in the semifinals, his 6.13/239.36 lost to Garlits' 6.08/242. He also made it into the semifinals at the Bakersfield March Meet. Once again, it was Garlits who stopped him. Dennis won NHRA Indy and the World Finals. Confirmed 5.845 at NHRA Ontario. Did Dennis run 5.81 somewhere this year?

Notes: Gary had a great year in '74. He started the season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race on January 12. The eight Top Fuel cars in the show were all members of the Cragar Five-Second Club. There was no qualifying as starting positions were drawn from a hat. Beck faced off against Tommy Ivo in the first round, but he got out of shape, and his 7.58/128.20 lost to Ivo's 6.57/208. One week later (January 27), Gary was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 6.10/233.76. In the first round, he beat Dick LaHaie's 6.26/229 with a 6.15/231.95. In round two, another 6.15 at 230.76 beat Bruce Walker's 6.40/222. But in the semifinals, he tossed a blower belt on the line and watched as eventual winner Mike Wagoner singled into the final. Beck went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and strutted his stuff. A 6.02/240.00 qualified #4, and he improved to a first-round 5.96/239.36 while beating John Austin. His times kept getting quicker, as in round two, a 5.90/223.88 beat John Wiebe's 6.27/226. He uncorked Low ET of the meet in the semifinal with a 5.842/226.13 over Pat Dakin. In the final, he was up against Jerry Ruth, and Ruth's 6.21/226 lost to Beck's strong 5.91/243.24 (Top Speed). This showing really made an impression on the rest of the field, showing that Beck was tough to beat as the season wore on. In March, Beck qualified #3 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 6.11/198.66. He beat a crossed-up Gary Ormsby in the first round, and in round two, he got a single when Billy Tidwell failed to show. In the third round, he beat Larry Dixon's Chevy, but it was a costly win as he hurt the motor and could not come back and run Carl Olson in the semifinal. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Beck qualified #1 with a 6.01 (Low ET) at 235.60. A first-round 6.19/225.56 beat Paul Longenecker, and in round two, he lost an engine, but his 6.32/186.72 still beat Jim Hundley. With a new "bullet" installed, Gary got a break in the semifinal when Jim Murphy lost a transmission. Beck was ready for the final against Dave Settles in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but he got a little too excited and fouled, handing Settles the win. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, Gary qualified on the pole, but he failed to make the finals of the eight-car show. He more than made up for it by winning the second NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga Dragway Park in Ontario, Canada. He beat a tire-smoking Jim Bucher in the first round, and a 6.43/227.84 beat Tony Ceraolo in the semifinal. Beck then set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.38/231.95 that beat Sarge Arciero's 6.77/225 for the victory. Another win came at the fifth annual Northwest Open at Seattle. It was an eight-car show that had 21 cars trying to qualify. Gary qualified #2 with a 6.24/231.36. He picked up his pace to a first-round 5.95/236.84 (Top Speed) to beat Terry Capp's 6.43/231. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a track record 5.94/226.13 over Hank Johnson. In the final, he smoked to a 6.48/236.84 that beat Ernie Hall's troubled 7.37/221. It was another impressive win for Beck as he was the only car in the fives. Yet the wins kept coming. On June 9, he scored again at the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified #2 with a 6.03/242.58. A first-round 6.09/230.17 beat Flip Schofield, and in round two, a 6.03/236.22 beat Grant Stoms. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.98/245.23 over Wiebe. In the final, he ran low qualifier Olson. Beck roared to a 6.05/247.25 (Top Speed) for the win over Carl's 6.26. He went over to AHRA for its Springnationals at Spokane Raceway. Once again, he took the win. He got to Wiebe again in the semifinals with his 6.15/226.70, beating John's 6.47/196. In the final, he met Don Garlits. When these two raced, it was always worth watching. This time was no different, but Beck whipped the "old man" with a 6.00 (Low ET) at 232.55 over Don's 6.36/230. Gary got knocked back down to earth at the AHRA Grand American at Kansas City on July 7. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/211.76, and in the first round, he lost to the #8 qualifier Chris Karamesines when his 6.79 fell to Chris' 6.51. The following week (July 14), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team was a little off here as Beck only qualified #13 with a 6.41/229.00. He picked up to 6.32/230.76 in the first round, over Arciero's close 6.35/238, but in round two, he fell off to 6.61/225.56 in a loss to Chuck Kurzawa's 6.39/227. At the third NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, he qualified #4 in the eight-car field and lost to #8 qualifier Hank Endres' 6.37/217 in the first round, with a quicker 6.35/222.22. After a couple of bad weeks, people were quick to say that Beck had lost his combination, but all that went away when they went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Gary ran Sanair's first "five" when he qualified #1 with a 5.91 at 223.32. The second qualifier was Settles, way back at 6.27. In round one, Beck ran 6.20/219.51 to beat Stoms' 6.34/226. In the second round, he hurt his engine while running 5.94/242.58 while beating Jeb Allen's 6.35/218. Lady Luck stepped in, and it rained. This postponed the race until Monday, giving Beck and his crew time to install a new motor for the semifinals. In the semifinals, Jim Bucher smoked his tires against him, and Gary advanced with a 6.28. He faced Settles in the final, and Dave must have been a little nervous seeing Beck's times. Settles fouled away a 6.39 while Beck grabbed the victory with a 6.34/217.91. After such a strong showing, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at the PHR Championships. Although he was not alone as 39 cars had attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Almost as many (38) showed up at New York National for the PRO race on August 17. It was quite a bit easier to qualify as it was a 32 car field. Beck's 6.28/198.66 qualified #14. He improved to 6.07/217.80 in the first round, to beat Dale Thierer, but in the second round, he lost an engine, and his 6.58/169.49 fell to Jim Walther's 6.19/228. Began 1974 season with Beck & Peets on the car before acquiring cigarette manufacturer "Export A" as a sponsor. Won 1974 NHRA World Championship. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 5.940/248.61 at Ontario in 10/74. Ran 5.842 at Winters, 6.01 at Gators, 5.98 at Springs, 6.31 at Summers, 6.21 at Indy, 5.94 at Supernationals, 5.91 at Sanair. Beck won Winternats, Springnats, Grandnats.

Notes: Gary debuted the "Thrush Muffler" car in May at the NHRA Division 6 race in Seattle. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.13, and he beat James Warren and Larry Kleinbrook in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Herm Petersen's 6.23/234 with an off-pace 7.71/122. He won the Division 1 race at Cayuga, and shortly after that, he won the third Division 3 race at Blaney. The car made its first national event showing at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Gary was having a rough time making the field, as it took five attempts before his 6.23 qualified him #12 for the show. It was a little embarrassing when, in the first round, his 6.65 lost to Graham Light's 6.24. Light was driving Beck's old car. Things didn't go much better at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Beck qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 6.14/227.84 beat John Wiebe's 6.14/234. But in round two, his off-pace 6.66/161.29 was lost to Jeb Allen's 6.13/227. A week later (July 17), he was in Seattle for the first race of the PDA Championships. He didn't reach the final but set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.99/238.09. At the second PDA race run at Fremont on July 24, he failed to reach the finals again, but he had a Top Speed at 243.93. He showed them at the last PDA race held at OCIR. He qualified #3 for the 32 car show with a 6.15 at only 212.76, but it was a long way back from Don Garlits, who qualified #1 with a 5.90/241. A first-round 6.17/218 beat Larry Dixon, and in round two, Gary's 6.16/233 took out Mike Reynolds. In round three, he really stepped it up, running 5.84/241.93 to beat Rob Bruins' 6.11/227. That set up a semifinal meeting with Garlits, who had run 5.82/245 in his third-round race. Beck cut a great light and made this race worth the cost of admission. His 5.89/236.22 beat "Big Daddy's" better 5.83/244. Beck went on to win by beating Ken Moitoza in a smoke-filled final. Gary's final round numbers were 6.43/226.70. He was in Canada the following week (August 8) for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another excellent outing for the team. He qualified #2 with a 6.02/233.76 behind Richard Tharp's 6.02/236 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. It was these two who would meet for the money. Beck started eliminations with a 6.38 over Frank Bradley, and in round two, his 6.14/241.93 beat Tom Kaiser. He got the odd-lot solo in the semifinals and ran 5.96/224.43. Tharp was also putting down some numbers. He had run 6.01, 5.98, and a semifinal 5.97. It was anyone's race in the final, but Beck made his fellow Canadians happy by setting a track record 5.81 at 243.24 (Top Speed) to get the win over Tharp's 6.08/199. Garlits got payback on Beck at the PHR Championships. Don qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field, and Gary's 6.12 got him the #9 spot in the show. This meant that the two ran each other in the first round. Garlits ran 5.88/238 to put the "Thrushmobile's" 6.18/216.86 on the trailer. Beck then went to Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #1 with a track record 5.90 at 224.43 and in the final Mike Palmer broke so Gary's 5.99/215.82 picked up the win.
