Notes: The photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Pat Foster (#740) was the driver at Indy even though John Lombardo's competition number (#735) is painted on the car. Pat qualified at 6.48/215.82 and won in the first round, but lost to Don Schumacher in the second. Also ran 6.31 at Atco, 6.46 at Pomona, and 6.50 at Ontario. | Pat was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals driving for Lombardo. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car show with a 6.59. In the first round, he shut off to an 8.68/108.04 that lost to Gordon Mineo's 6.52/197. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.521/215.31 qualified #8 and a 6.460/211.76 beat Paul Radici in round one, but in round two an oil leak developed on the line, and he shut down, giving John Collins a single run into the semifinals. He failed to qualify at the Bakersfield March Meet. Foster was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, but he smoked the tires and lost to Twig Zeigler. On April 6, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American. Unfortunately, in round one, Pat was a little slow off the line and his 6.66/215.82 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.71/211. He won the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale in July. Foster beat Dave Condit in the first round, with a 6.49/212.86 and in the semifinals, another 6.49/212.26 beat Jim Dunn's 6.83/174. In the final, he was to face Gary Burgin driving Jim Glenn's Charger, but Burgin had an oil leak and had to shut off on the line. Foster soloed with a 6.38 (Low ET) at 209.30. The 6.38 was the quickest time ever for a Donovan powered Funny Car (up to this time). Qualified #15 at Indy at 6.484/215.82, but improved to 6.319/223.88 in a first-round win over Dale Pulde’s close 6.369/220.04. Don Schumacher beat Pat in round two. Qualified #15 at the Ontario finals at 6.500/215.31, but lost to Jim Dunn in round one.

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. | Larry wasn't running nearly as well in '75 as he had in previous years. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. Fullerton did run well at a best of three match race against Tom McEwen in May. It was an 1/8 mile track and Larry won all three of the races with runs of 4.25, 4.65, and a solo 5.06 when McEwen broke. Shortly after that, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. An opening round 7.67 advanced when Jackie Price's Vega broke on the line, but he failed to fire for his round two match against Jim Nicoll. Larry was at Connecticut for the Memorial Day Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show with all the cars making three runs. A crossed-up 8.38 in his first race lost to Jimmy King's 6.76. In the second race, Fullerton’s 7.12/209.79 lost to Don Johnson's new Monza at 6.98/194. In the last race, Harlan Thompson's "Fireball Vega" broke so Larry was to get a solo run. After losing two races this was an easy win, but no such luck. Larry blew the engine on his 7.07 single. It was not a good weekend. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. His next stop as at Tri City for the seventh annual Manufacturer's Championships. It was an eight-car show with all cars making three passes. Ron O'Donnell's 6.83/204 beat his 6.99/181.08 in his first race. Larry got a win in his second race with a 7.00/184.42 beating a tire-smoking Norm Wilcox in the "Hawaiian,” and in his third race, he beat a crossed-up Tom Hoover with a 6.96/198.67. As shown by his numbers, the "Trojan Horse" was falling behind the competition. In the middle of June, he was at Byron for their Manufacturer's Meet. Twelve cars ran the first-round with the lowest eight ET's going into round two. Larry won his opening round race with a 7.19/198 when Kenny Safford crossed the centerline in the "Mr. Norm" car, but his ET failed to advance him into round two. This once feared car was not feared by many anymore, and it got worse. In July Fullerton was up in Canada at Cayuga Dragway for the Gold Cup Championships. The format was 14 cars making three runs with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Fullerton won his first two races with a 6.96/156.52 over Al Segrini who shut off and his 6.86/172.74 beat Pee Wee Wallace in round two, but the car broke and was unable to run the third race. The Mustang II came to an end at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals during Friday's qualifying. The car went to a huge fireball that totaled the body and did major damage to the chassis and running gear. Luckily, Larry received only minor burns. He was out of commission for a while, but he was back in the saddle at Maryland International on August 16 with his old '73 Mustang for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He finished runner-up to Don Prudhomme there. He competed at New England Dragway for the Epping Grand Am, but he lost to eventual winner Al Segrini in the first round. Near the end of the season, Larry was runner-up to Ron Jackson at the Suffolk Little Guy Open and he got a win over Tom Anderson at the Southeast National Open at Warner Robins.

Jim was the second alternate at NHRA Sanair at 7.31, and he ran 6.63/212.76 for the 15th alternate DNQ slot at NHRA Indy. On September 18, the team was at Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals. A 6.43 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Dale Pulde's 6.28. But an off-pace 7.16 in the opening round of eliminations, lost to Ken Safford's 6.74 in the "Mr. Norm" car.

Notes: Greer was at Tucson Dragway in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 for the show and in the second round, his 6.69 beat a tire smoking Jim Liberman at 6.78. In the semifinals, Tom McEwen also smoked the tires against him and Greer advanced with a 6.84. He faced Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang in the final and this time it was Greer who smoked the tires. He shut down to 8.00 while Van Sant got the victory with a 6.84. His next stop was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic and while he qualified, he failed to reach the finals there. He failed to qualify at Pomona with his 6.350/204.54 just missing the 6.34 "bump." At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.381/222.77 qualified #5. A 6.39/205.01 got around a tire frying John Lombardo, while a second round 6.40/207.85 got past Tom Prock, who also overpowered the track. In the semifinals, a 6.50/206.42 advanced when Bob Pickett also smoked the tires. In the final, he raced Don Prudhomme and on paper it looked like it was close as the "Snake's" best run of eliminations had been a 6.45. Unfortunately for Greer, Prudhomme stepped up in the final to set both ends of the track record (6.24/236.84) while Shirl shut down to 7.66/118.89. He then went to Warner Robins for the NHRA Division 2 Opener on March 28. Shirl's 6.60/213.77 qualified #1 and he got the "odd lot" solo" in the first round, as there were only seven cars on hand. On his solo, he ran 6.59/196.07. In the semifinals, he beat Ron Leaf's Vega with a 6.86/189.07 and he had it easy in the final as opponent Prock broke. Greer ran 6.60/216.34 (Top Speed) for the victory. He then made a stop at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lasted until the semifinals before his off-pace 8.59/123.62 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 6.81/227 in the "Blue Max." Greer also won the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto on April 11 over Pete Miner. In June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where his 6.58 qualified #11. He improved to 6.46/216 in the opening round to beat Ron O'Donnell's 6.89/189 and in round two, opponent Paul Smith smoked the tires and Greer advanced with a 6.94 at a booming 229.00. In the semifinals, he ran a good 6.48/221.13, but it wasn't enough to stop Prudhomme's 6.34/214. Shortly after this, he was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, where he reached the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Gary Burgin. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Greer qualified #8 with a 6.486/223.88. He beat John Austin in the first round, with a nice 6.388, but a late leaving 6.404 in round two lost to McEwen's 6.529. Shirl did not qualify at Indy with his best ET of the year, 6.340 at 226.13. AKA Chain Lightning. Photo from the 1976 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Greer was a perennial Division 2 contender and won the division Funny Car title in 76, 77, and 78. Confirm if this is a Cecil Hicks or Jaime Sarte car.

Notes: Tom was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.53 and had an easy first-round win. In the second round, both he and opponent Gene Snow had difficulties getting traction, and Hoover's 6.92 got the win over Snow's 7.13. In the semifinals, Hoover's "Showtime" once again smoked the times, and this time, his 7.52 lost to eventual winner Mike Van Sant's 6.82 in the "Invader." Tom did not race at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There, he qualified #9 with a 6.300/211.26. But again, he went up in smoke, and his opening round 8.187/104.04 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.062/219.51. Tom then went to Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.444/214.79 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 6.47/209.30 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.57/207.37. He lost to Bob Pickett's 6.65/221.13 in round two with a 6.74/220.04. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Later in April, Hoover was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. He reached the final at that event by stopping Wilfred Boutilier in the first round with a 6.41. A 6.39 in round two took out Dick Custy, and a 6.35 in the semifinals beat Tom McEwen. He faced Snow in the final. Snow had been running just a little quicker throughout eliminations with a 6.26 best, but the race never came off as Hoover lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Gene a solo for the victory. In May, he was in Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.81 and lasted until round two, where Dale Emery's 6.65/208 beat his 6.71/217.88. Later in the month, he was runner-up to Snow again at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. He grabbed a victory at St. Louis on June 6 for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his opening round 6.65/217.40 advanced over Jerry Messer's broken Mustang II at 14.24. In the semifinals, his 6.73/210.86 beat Emery, who smoked the tires. For the third time that season, Hoover would face Snow in the final. Once again, Gene had been running quicker during eliminations with a 6.56 best. But this time, Snow overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover ran his best, a 6.53/209.86, to pick up the win. The following week (June 13), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.635/207.85. He lost a close race against Gary Burgin in the first round, with his 6.604/218.97 falling to Burgin's 6.591/214.79. He was still driving the Vega in July at the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. He was quick off the line in his first-round race with Custy as Tom's 6.24 beat Dick's slightly quicker 6.23. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.19 lost to Tom Prock's 6.09. Tom's 5.999/232.55 times were among several questionable numbers recorded at Green Valley Race City events. Tom came out with a new Monza at Martin, Michigan, in mid-August for the PHR Championships and raced it throughout the end of the season. | Former Don Prudhomme Vega that Tom Hoover ran from Spring 1974 through mid-Summer 1976 with three different paint schemes. Notes: In February, Hudson was at Warner Robins for a best-of-three-match race against Paul Smith, driving the "Fireball Vega." It was a bad day for both drivers. Harry's 6.82/207.66 won when Smith lost a blower belt in the first race. Hudson got out of shape in the second race and tagged the guardrail. The damage wasn't horrible, but it was enough to keep him from running the last race. Harry qualified #11 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.839/211.26. In the opening round, he improved to 6.812/216.34, but it wasn't enough to beat Don Schumacher's 6.58/208. Only four FC's showed up at Warner-Robins on March 31 for the NHRA Division Two Opener. In the first round, Hudson's 6.84/208 beat Pete Miner's 6.98/201 in the "Gold Coast Duster." He faced low qualifier Smith in the final. Harry picked up to 6.64 (Low ET) at 213.77 to win over Smith's 6.74/215. Hudson showed that he was "for real" when he also won the Suffolk Division Two race. It was a full eight-car field, and in the first round, his 6.75/190 beat Dee Simmons. A 6.65 beat Miner in the semifinals, and he faced the "Trojan Horse" of Larry Fullerton in the final. Larry was not running well this day, and in the final, his 7.65/121 finished runner up to Hudson's 6.61/206.33 (Low ET and Top Speed). He was the sixth alternate at NHRA Columbus (times unavailable). Harry later died from a crash in this car. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Kosty was the #1 qualifier at the Gatornationals with a 6.51, but lost in the first round, when he launched the body off his car high into the air at the top end of the track. Ran 6.44 at Columbus, 6.44 at Indy. | Kosty was at New England in July for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with a 6.60/207, but he broke against Fred Bickford in the first round. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he failed to qualify. His next stop was at Maple Grove for it's All-American series race. It was a sixteen-car show and in the opening round his 6.61/165 beat Dodger Glenn's 6.66/195 in the "Frantic Ford." A 6.50/197.80 beat Jimmy King's 6.81/202 in round two, and he got an easy single in the semifinals when Ed McCulloch broke a brake caliper and was unable to stage. This put him in the final against Bill Leavitt. The two had a good race with Kosty's 6.45/217.91 getting the victory over Leavitt's 6.55/200. Then he went to York's US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. Unfortunately, an off-pace 7.03/193.93 lost to Tom Prock's 6.95/213 in the first round. The following week (August 4) he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 6.65/210.77 qualified #3 for the eight-car show. In round one, Billy Meyer had problems and shut off while Ivanof advanced with a 6.61/208.81. In the semifinals he got a good leave and his 6.78/215.31 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.71/214. The final saw the "Boston Shaker" break and Shirl Greer won his first NHRA National event with a single. New York National hosted the PRO National Challenge race on August 18. Only 21 cars showed for the 32 car field and Kosty was one of them. But in the first round, he lost to a quick-leaving Charles Lee who's 7.10/197 beat his quicker 7.06/212.76. He qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.44/207.37. A 6.48 in the first round, beat Smith's 6.58, but the car failed to fire in round two for his race against Mike Miller in the "Green Elephant." Ivanof was back at New England for the Eighth Annual Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car field and a first-round 6.65/188 advanced when Al Hanna driving the "Eastern Raider" failed to fire. In round two, his 6.44/214 beat Glenn's badly crossed, up Mustang II. But in round three, Tommy Grove set a track record 6.31 while beating Kosty's 6.48. Ivanof got a second shot at it when Grove suffered some burnt pistons and was unable to return for the semifinal. Ivanof replaced him, but he wasn't able to capitalize on it as he was shut off on the line with an oil leak giving his opponent, Al Segrini, a solo into the final.
