Notes: Roy had probably the strongest Mopar on the NHRA trail in '76. He started the season at Irwindale's Grand Premier race, setting Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 8.79/154.63. The closest anyone could get to him in qualifying was Lee Hunter's 8.90 way back in second. But in the opening round, Hill fouled against Gary Hansen. At Tucson, Arizona, for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with an 8.80 but lost to Ken Dondero's 9.06 in the first round, with an off-pace 9.18. He then went to Beeline for the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, where he qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with an 8.98. He beat Jack Schorr in the first round with a 9.00/152.54 before losing to Richie Zul in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with an 8.84/156.25. His 8.86/155.17 stopped Shelby Jester in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.86/155 with an 8.93/154.10 in round two. Hill ran strong at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornats. There he qualified #6 with an 8.82. A even better 8.80/155.70 beat Larry Ford's 8.99/150 in round one, but he was slow off the line in round two, where his 8.84/155.44 lost to Dave Kanners' 8.88/153. until the second round, where his 8.84. He then made the trip to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Roy lasted until the semifinals before his 8.81/156.79 lost to Scott Shafiroff's 8.77/154. He ended the month of March with a win on the 28th at Warner Robins NHRA Division 2 Opener. He qualified #1 with an 8.91 and then got the "odd lot" solo in the first round, where he advanced with an 8.94. Roy set Low ET in the semifinal when he ran 8.85/153.05 to best Reid Whisnant's 9.08/151. He ran 8.85/154.63 (Top Speed) for the victory over Lamar Walden in the final. Roy showed that the Mopars could still run under NHRA's weight breaks by qualifying #2 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals (8.89) and setting Top Speed at 154.63. Unfortunately, he broke the motor and was unable to run eliminations. It was interesting to note that he still sat third in the NHRA Pro Stock points after this race behind Warren Johnson and Glidden. He also looked strong at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta on May 23, where he reached the final against Glidden only to break on the line. He had run 8.88 in the semifinal, beating "Dyno Don" Nicholson. On June 5, he won the third NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney, South Carolina. He needed only a 9.23 to win as Wally Booth broke a clutch in the final. The following week (June 13), he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Only two Mopars qualified, and Hill was the quickest with an 8.88 (#3). The two Mopars met in the opening round, and Roy's 9.14/148 beat Bobby Yowell's 9.22/150. But in the second round, an ailing 9.39/120.00 lost to Charlie Reed's 9.07/138. His performance was off at the NHRA Summernationals, where he was the #12 qualifier. In the first round, his 8.95/152.02 lost to Kanner's 8.81/155. He did better at Suffolk for the fourth NHRA Division Two race the following weekend. He finished runner-up to Richie Zul's 8.79/153 with an 8.79 of his own at 154.37 (Top Speed). Petty Built.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. On May 9, Hobson was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #3 with an 8.90, and in the first round, his 8.87/153.06 beat Don Campanello's 9.10/149. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, he fouled against the eventual winner Larry Lombardo. Carl won an NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race at Great Meadows, N.J., on May 29. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, he beat Bob Ingles with a 9.02/153.32. In the semifinals, his 8.98/152.80 beat Tom Gray. The final was against the similar big-block Camaro of Richie Zul. Hobson got a slight holeshot, and his 8.98/153.84 got the victory over Zul's 8.97 at just 144.

Notes: Shelby started his season at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until round two before his 9.36 lost to Lee Edwards' 8.96. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #11, but in the opening round, his 9.21/148.02 fell to Richie Zul's 8.87/154. Jester qualified #15 at the NHRA Winternationals at 9.046/149.50. In round one, he lost to Roy Hill, 8.86/155 to 9.150/151.77. Shelby found the eights in Gainesville, qualifying #13 at 8.961/152.80. He shocked the crowd with a holeshot round win over Wayne Gapp in round one, 8.94/151.77 to 8.92/152, but he fouled against Larry Lombardo in round two, losing an 8.81/153 to 8.93/153.58 contest. Shelby won LaPlace Dragway WCS in 3/76 with an 8.89/153 (Low ET and Top Speed). He was at Amarillo Dragway in the first week of May for the IHRA World Nationals. In the opening round, his 8.85/152.68 lost to Wayne Gapp's 8.69/157. Back at LaPlace, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 9.01/151.00 in the first round lost to low qualifier Wally Booth's 8.82/153. He was at El Paso Dragway for the NHRA Division Four race in mid-May. Unfortunately, his off-pace 10.42/133.92 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 9.85/133 in round one. On June 6, he won the NHRA Division Four race at Baton Rouge. His 8.93/154.63 (Top Speed) beat Lee Shepherd, who broke in the final. Shelby qualified #12 at NHRA Columbus with a 9.079/151.77. In round one, he lost to Bob Glidden, 8.89/152 to 9.07/151.51. This car was wrecked twice, once at the 1976 US Nationals, due to a failed rear tire that rolled on the rim and went flat. He was the third alternate at Indy at 9.011/149.75. At the time, he was top 5 in the national points and still finished the season in tenth place. Shelby won the NHRA Division 4 Pro Stock Championship in this car. He carried the number 10 on the Shag at the start of the 1977 season. Notes: Finished number 2 in 1976. Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. 156.23 Gainesville. 8.74 AHRA Tucson. 158.45 Englishtown Summernationals (National Record) at 156.25 NHRA Springnationals Top Speed. | Warren Johnson had always run well in Pro Stock, but he really improved in '76. His season started well by winning the AHRA Winternationals in January at Tucson. He qualified #4 with an 8.74/152.02. After an easy first-round win, he beat Randy Humphrey in round two with a 9.05. He had to race Ken Dondero driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the semifinals, and Warren proved up to the task, running 8.99/153.32 over Dondero's 9.04/150. In the final, he faced Lee Edwards in an all Camaro battle. Johnson got a slight holeshot, and his 9.01/153.32 held off Edwards' 9.00/149 for the victory. His next race was the Phoenix Winter Classic. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 8.90 qualified #1. In the first two rounds, he dropped Gary Hansen and Humphrey before losing to Richie Zul's similar big-block Camaro in the semifinals. After that, it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A strong 8.79 qualified #2 behind Bill Jenkins himself, driving his Monza to 8.77 for the pole. Warren beat Edwards in round one, but in the second round, he lost to Wayne Gapp, who was still driving the "Gapp and Roush" four-door Maverick. At only his fourth ever NHRA National event, he made it to his first Pro Stock final at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. An 8.80 qualified him #4, and in the opening round, he beat Paul Blevins. He picked up to 8.78/156.25 in round two to beat Zul's 8.83. Another 8.78 at 156.52 beat Dave Kanners' 8.84 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Larry Lombardo, who was now driving Jenkins' car. Warren ran his best, an 8.76/156.25, but failed to beat Lombardo's Low ET (and new NHRA ET record) 8.71/155. On April 11, he was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. The times turned were unreal (never sure about the times turned at KCIR). Johnson ran 8.65 and 8.63 to reach the final, where he faced Dondero. Warren fouled in the final, wasting an 8.54/160.71, while Ken motored to the victory with an 8.80/156. He then won the NHRA Division 5 Opener at Denver. Warren set lot ET and Top Speed and a final round 9.40/145.40 beat Dale Falk. He won AHRA's third race of the season as well, the Okie Nationals held at Tulsa in May. Once again, it was a fight between WJ and Jenkins' driver, Dondero. Ken held the upper hand in qualifying, running 8.83/155, while Warren followed with an 8.90/155.17. Johnson picked up the pace during eliminations, running 8.87/153.32 and 8.86/155.17, while Dondero's best was 8.88. The two faced off in the final, and Johnson won with an 8.80 (Low ET) at 155.17 over Ken's 8.87/154. He got into another NHRA final at Columbus for the Springnationals. WJ's 8.84/155.17 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's 8.82. These two would work their way into the final. In the first round, his 8.81/154.37 beat Gapp's 9.14/149. A second-round 8.87/153.58 took out Lombardo's 8.94/155. In the semifinals, an 8.83/153 beat Bob Glidden's 8.92/153. Booth had been running strong in eliminations, and in the final, his 8.74/154 easily covered WJ's 8.81/156.25 (Top Speed). Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #5 with an 8.76/158.45 (Top Speed and a new NHRA speed record). He lasted until the second round, where his 8.80/157.61 lost to Lombardo's 8.72/154. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.69/158.73 (Top Speed and another NHRA speed record), and he lasted until the semifinal, where his 8.79/155.97 lost to Booth's 8.69/155. After that, it was off to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He continued to qualify well with an 8.83 that got him the #3 spot in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round.

ET from a match race event in November, not from the Ontario World Finals in October. | Landy was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but he had the misfortune of qualifying #9. That was bad because it forced him to run low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. It didn't go well for Landy as his 9.22 lost to Glidden's 8.97. Notes: 1973 AHRA National Pro Stock record holder at 8.88/154.10. Ran 9.10/150.50 at Indy, 9.07/149.75 qualifying #1 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge. Set NHRA National Record of 151.77 at Englishtown, after going 8.98/151. 1973 Grand American Final Fremont California Pro Stock Champion at 8.91/153.75. The photo from the 1973 Popular Hot Rodding Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. 1973 Popular Hot Rod Meet Champion. 1973 Drag News Pro Stock Driver of the Year. 1973 Irwindale California Grand Prix Pro Stock Champion. 1973 Pro Stock runner-up NHRA Summernationals. 1973 Pro Stock runner-up NHRA Springnationals. | Leal was pretty much unbeatable in the OCIR All-Pro Series in '73. The first of the four races was actually run on December 31/1972. Butch set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 9.41/145.86 to beat Larry Huff's 9.56/143 for the victory. The second race was almost a repeat of the first. Leal qualified #1, set a track speed record of 147.29 and then met with Huff again in the final. There he reset the OCIR track record with a 9.36 at 147.05 over Huff's 9.55/144 for his second straight series win. At the AHRA Winternationals, he blew two transmissions during qualifying. He figured that was enough and packed up. He was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. Once again, he reset the track record, this time to 9.32 in qualifying #1. This time he faced Dick Landy in the final. Landy had stolen his track record away with a semifinal 9.27 so it was a close race. But Leal prevailed, running a 9.44/146.81 to win over a troubled 10.35/101. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 9.52/146.34 qualified #7 in the 32 car field. He beat Gene McKinney in the first round, with a 9.59/145.86, but in round two his 9.64/145.63 lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson's 9.55/145. Butch then went to Famoso on March 4 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He ran well and probably would have won, but he broke against Bill Bagshaw early in eliminations. At OCIR's final All-Pro event, Leal again reached the final, but this time he fouled away a 9.34/147.29 while Landy picked up the win with a 9.17/149. Still, he was the OCIR All-Pro Pro Stock series champion. In April, he won the Las Vegas Open at Lions and another win came in May at the NHRA Division 7 race at Famoso. There he set Low ET at 9.41 and in the final beat Sonny Bryant. He was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The Mopars were strong there taking three of the top four spots in qualifying. Leal's 9.37/147.05 qualified #4. In the first round, his 9.48/145.86 beat Ronnie Sox's 9.51/144. In round two, he faced another Mopar, Bob Riffle's. This time Leal's 9.52/144.92 beat Riffle's 9.55/145. In the semifinals, a 9.42 beat Wayne Gapp's Pinto at 9.59. It was an all-Mopar final, with Leal facing Don Carlton and the "Mopar Missile.” Unfortunately, Butch fouled away a 9.44/146.81 while Carlton picked up the win with a 9.40/147. The following week (June 17) found Leal at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET at 9.22 in qualifying #1, and he lasted until round two where his 9.46/147.78 (Top Speed) lost to Sox's slower 9.55. He had the quickest Mopar in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 9.18 got him the #3 spot in the 32 car field. For the second straight NHRA race, he worked his way into the final. A 9.22/149.25 beat Levi Holmes in the opening round while a second round 9.07/151.00 beat Landy. In round three, Butch's 9.12/150.75 took out Riffle and in the semifinals, a 9.09/151.51 trailered Melvin Yow's 9.15/151. He faced "Grumpy" Bill Jenkins in the final and Jenkins won with a 9.02/150 over Leal's 9.13/151.77 (Top Speed and a new track record). He followed the NHRA tour up to Canada for the Grandnationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.06. This was his race to win. He opened up eliminations with a 9.17/150.00 over Bert Straus's Pontiac. In round two, he outdrove Paul Blevins by getting off the line first and running 9.17/150.50 to beat Blevins' quicker 9.10/149. He had another close race in the semifinals where his 9.11/151.26 beat Nicholson's 9.15/147. This put him in his third NHRA event final in a row. He faced future superstar, Bob Glidden in the final. Leal's 9.13/151.00 scored the victory over Glidden's off-pace 9.40/135. Another win soon followed when he won the PHR Championships on August 12. It was another sixteen-car field, and he ran 9.20/149.50 over low qualifier, Nicholson in the first round. A second-round 9.17/149.50 beat Sox and a semifinal 9.15/150.25 beat Carlton's 9.18/147. In the final, he was up against Gapp, but Gapp lost a clutch and Leal's 9.18/149.50 got him the victory. Yet another final round showing came on August 26 at the AHRA National Challenge race. He led the 32 car field in qualifying with a 9.07 (Low ET) at 149.75. After an easy first-round, he ran 9.17/150 in round two over Reid Whisnant's 9.27/146. He beat Riffle on a holeshot in round three before surviving a close semifinal race with Nicholson. Leal's 9.15/150.00 just nipped "Dyno's" 9.16/148. It was Leal vs Jenkins again and once again "Grumpy" got the win with a 9.08/150 beating Butch's 9.16/149.75 runner-up effort. A week later (September 3), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. His 9.14/150.50 qualified #5, and he was the quickest Mopar qualifier. He improved to 9.10 in the first round, to beat Sonny Bryant's 9.40. In round two his 9.12/151.00 beat Bobby Yowell, but in the third round, his 9.09/150.75 lost to eventual winner Glidden's 9.05/152. He went to OCIR for the AHRA Western Nationals. It was the ninth of ten AHRA Grand American races. Leal kicked, butt here. He qualified #1 with an 8.99/153. In the first round, his 8.98 advanced and in round two he soloed with an 8.96/152 when Larry Huff broke on the line. In the semifinals, he picked up to 8.92/153.58 while beating Landy's 9.18/150. He faced Bagshaw in the final, but there didn't really need to be a car in the other lane as Leal reset both ends of the AHRA record with an 8.88/154.10 to totally dominate the race. A side note had to be Bagshaw's sportsmanship. Butch's Duster ran out of gas on the line in the final and Bill could have soloed for the win, but he waited for Leal's crew to put fuel into the car and give the fans a race. Leal also went to Fremont for the AHRA World Championships. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.91/153.06. Only 13 cars showed, so he got the odd-lot solo in the first round, and cooled it with a 12.94. In round two he beat Lee Hunter's Pinto with a 9.00 and an 8.97/151.51 beat Scott Shafiroff in the semifinals. He faced Bagshaw in the final again and this time Bill fouled so Leal picked up another win. The wins kept on coming as in October. He won the Irwindale Grand Prix, stopping Landy's 9.16/151 in the final with a 9.00/151.77.

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. This car had a very short lifespan. Don Hardy built the car which used quick-release body panels. The Gapp and Roush built engine used Brooks rods and pistons, a General Kinetics cam, and twin Holley Dominators on an Edelbrock tunnel ram manifold. The heads, of course, were also done by Gapp and Roush. The rear end was a Ford 9" with 5.67 gears. | The "Gapp and Roush" team debuted their new Mustang II at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Jack Roush drove it while Wayne Gapp drove the team's Pinto. As shown in the picture, he had the rear window blow out at speed on its first run. They grabbed a replacement off a rent-a-car! Jack then went out and qualified the car #2 with a 9.03/152.28 behind Gapp's 8.99/152 in the Pinto. Both survived the first-round with Jack's 8.94/153.06 beating Paul Blevins' 9.01. Gapp hurt his motor in his first-round win over Bob Glidden and was unable to run in round two. Roush had to carry the "Gapp and Roush" banner himself in round two and his 8.97/152.51 won over Scott Shafiroff's 9.08/149. He beat his third straight Vega driver in the semifinals where his 8.95/152.80 put Frank Iaconio's 9.05/152 on the trailer. This put Jack into the final against Wally Booth and his AMC Hornet. Jack made his worst run of eliminations, a 9.01/152.54 that finished runner-up to Booth's 8.97/152.
