Notes: Bill Dunlap started the season using an Arias-Root Ford engine. I'm not sure at what point he changed over to the KB. Steve qualified number 12 at Pomona with a 7.218 172.41. At the Bakersfield March Meet. He ran 6.85/201.79 in the opening round to beat low qualifier Hans Kuesel. In the semifinal, his 6.80/205.47 fell to eventual winner Brad Anderson's 6.63/212. The team did not race at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Early in April, they were at OCIR for its second 64-car show of the year. The Alcohol Funny Car show was an eight-car show. Steve's 6.75/204.08 qualified #4. In the first round, he repeated that number at 206.89 to defeat Dale Van Gundy's 6.95/197. In the semifinal, his 6.84/206.89 lost to Chuck Beal's 6.50/213. McCracken was the 4th qualifier at the NHRA Baton Rouge 5/83 race with a 6.684/206.24. McCracken was still running the Arias-Ford engine on May 29 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he ran 6.75/207.37 and 6.899/207.37 in eliminations. In the final against Ronny Young, Ford sucked a valve and slowed to 7.30/143.31 in a runner-up finish to Young's 6.78/208. |

Notes: Bruce was at Englishtown in May for Englishtown's 1st annual Night of Thrills race. Twelve cars were competing, and each made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting for the final. In his first race, he was late, and his 7.27/191.08 lost to Arnie Karp's 7.32/199. In the second race, he ran 7.32 at a shut-off 114.35 over John Planeta. His 7.27 was good enough to advance into the final, where he slowed to 7.40/186.52 and lost to Jim Lynch's 7.20/192. Pillar was in Connecticut near the end of June for an eight-car show. His 7.37/189.07 advanced when Arnie Karp lost a blower belt in the first round. In the semi-final, he defeated Glenn Lazzar's 7.75/150 with a 7.33/187.89. He faced Bob Chipper in the final, and despite running 7.30/182.92, he finished second best to Chipper's 7.02/197. Photo from 1977. Former Wild Wilfred Boutilier Vega (the second one). |

Notes: Confirm fuel. Ran on gas (B/A I think) and won Competition Eliminator at '68 Winternationals - last of 3 wins ('66 Indy Comp, '67 Indy Super, were the others) for this car. We need to get times for this. Replaced by '68 flip-top Dart on nitro (I.D.: 5894). - Bill McLauchlan |
