Notes: The Gapp and Roush team entered the '74 season with three cars. They had the seasoned Pinto from '73 along with a new one. Along with the Pintos, they had a Mustang II. The team was not sure how the 351 ran with the new NHRA weight break of 6.75 lbs per cubic inch, but Gapp mentioned in January that if the small cars were uncompetitive, he would build a four-door Maverick to take advantage of the 6.45 factor for cars with over a 105" wheelbase. Wayne started the season at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.92. In the first round, he beat Warren Johnson's Vega with a 9.06/149.02. An 8.94/152.02 took care of Dave Kanners' 9.03 in the AMC Hornet in round two. But in the semifinals, his 9.03/151.26 lost to fellow Pinto campaigner Bob Glidden's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Gapp qualified #2 with an 8.95/151.77. A first-round 8.920/151.77 beat Kelly Chadwick's Vega at 9.36. In round two, he ran 8.99/151.00 to easily cover Bill Bagshaw's 9.22/144. A semifinal 9.00/150.75 beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.22/144 to put the Pinto in the final. There he had to run Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. It was a close race with Bill's Vega barely winning with an 8.93/152, just edging the Pinto's 8.94/152.02. Gapp and Roush brought two cars to the Gatornationals, with Wayne driving the Pinto and Jack driving their new Mustang II. They qualified #1 and second with Gapp's 8.99/152.54 getting the pole. Gapp advanced past the first-round with a 9.19 when Glidden lost a transmission. But the Pinto's engine was ailing, and the car couldn't make the call for the second round. Gapp won the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in April. It was an eighth-mile track, and Wayne qualified #2 with a 5.90. He ran a 6.02/116.42 in the first round, to beat Ronnie Sox's brother, David. In the semifinals, a 6.06/117.95 beat Sam Carroll's 6.16. In the final, he faced Roy Hill's Duster. Roy ran 6.05/117 but lost to Gapp's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 5.80/123.11. Wayne was at Rockingham on May 12 for another IHRA race, the Pro-Am Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.12/150.00, but he failed to reach the finals. Ran IHRA records of 5.80/123.11 on the eighth-mile in winning the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in late March 1974. It was the Pinto that set the record (not the Mustang II). There is footage of the race on YouTube. Wayne began running the four-door Maverick at NHRA Columbus in June. |

Notes: Lost the quickest side by side race in history to Bob Glidden at the NHRA Summernationals, 8.58 to 8.80. (Then, in a later round, Glidden and Richie Zul set yet another combined quickest mark, 8.53 to 8.66). | Dempsey won the NHRA Division 2 opener at DeSoto Memorial Speedway on April 16. He had set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.77/155.70 before beating Roy Hill's 8.85/153 in the final with an 8.80/154.63. A couple of weeks later, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A tough eight-car field saw such notables like Larry Lombardo and Kevin Rotty fail to qualify. Dempsey's 8.73/155.70 qualified #7. But his opening round 8.83/154.90 lost to Wally Booth's 8.78/155. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, his 8.78/154.10 qualified #11. He surprised Lee Shepherd in the first round, where his 8.86/153.06 beat Lee's quicker, but later 8.83/152. But in round two, he had the same thing happen: his quicker 8.87/153.06 lost to Don Nicholson's 8.89/153. Hardy qualified #9 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.74. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Dempsey knew he had to take a chance on the tree. He gambled and lost, fouling away an 8.78/154.63, while Glidden advanced with an 8.64. Best NHRA national event times were 8.690 at the Grandnationals and 155.70 at the Cajun Nationals. |

He qualified #1 with a 9.36 (Low ET), and in the first round, his 9.41 beat Carl Hobbs' 9.63 in the "Super Fats" Camaro. In the semifinals, he spun the tires against Dave Strickler and lost. Shortly after that, he was in Connecticut for another eight-car show. It was an interesting day for Frank, as he fouled away a 9.67 against Bob Judd in the first round, but returned to the show on the "break rule." He fouled again in the semifinals with a 9.46 going to waste against Charlie Castaldo's 10.16. But Charlie's Mopar broke, so Iaconio found himself in the final against Richie Zul's big-block Camaro. Now Frank was a little gun shy after fouling twice. His late 9.44/146.57 finished runner-up to Zul's 9.50/144. In May, he went to Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic race. Once again, it was an eight-car field, and Iaconio qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Carman Rotonda. It was no contest, as Frank ailing Vega lost to Rotonda's similar car at 9.30/142. He was back in Connecticut for its Memorial Day Championships, where he finished runner-up to Frank Russo's 9.46/146 with a 9.50/140.18. He was at Englishtown for an eight-car show in mid-June, but his opening round 9.48/146.57 lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.42/146. Almost 50 cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals; Frank's 9.44 got him the #28 spot in the show. |

Notes: Bill debuted the new Camaro at Englishtown, qualifying #10 at 9.838/138.46. He beat Rich LaMont in round one, 9.86 to 11.96, but lost to Don Nicholson in round two, 9.64 to another 9.86. At Indy, Bill qualified #10 at 9.777/140.84, but he was shocked by Hubert Platt in round one, 9.85 to 9.96. Bill also ran 9.80 at York with this car. That was his last national event in his own car, but he qualified Bill Coe's Duster at Ontario (and then Coe drove during eliminations). |

Notes: Larson was at Englishtown in August for an eight-car unlimited Pro Stock race. In the first round, both he and Wayne Gapp ran 8.92 (Larson at 151.51), but the "win" light came on in the Ford's lane. He came back out for a couple of consolation races, and in the first of those, his 9.00/150.25 beat a fouling Tom Smallwood, and on the second, his 8.93/151.26 lost to Mike Fons' 8.67/157. 9.17 at Cecil County Co. 9.04/148.26 at NY National at 6.75#, CID. Where was this 8.84/148 run? A match race at light weight? Bruce has confirmed that he had a 'big' small block for the Vega that he used for match racing. |

Notes: Former Sox & Martin Herb McCandless car that was recently restored. Ran 9.19 at Cecil County 74. | Frank set Top Speed at Cecil County for an eight-car show in July with a 157.89 blast. Cars were at legal NHRA weight. Other cars here were Wayne Gapp, Bruce Larson, Richie Zul, Scott Shafiroff, Don Nicholson, Herb McCandless, and Frank Iaconio. So its a little surprising that this car set Top Speed. The next best speed I could find at the race was 152 by Zul's Camaro. Russo lost to a holeshot by Larson in the first round, and his 9.19 fell to Bruce's 9.23. Speed real or fiction? |

Notes: Roy debuted his new Probe at the third race of the IHRA season, the President's Cup Championships at Maryland International. He qualified well, but in the first round, he lost to a holeshot by Steve Williford. Steve ran a 6.93 that beat Hill's quicker 6.90. Roy made up for the first-round loss by going out and winning the next race, the Springnationals at Bristol. He was running steady 7.0s with a second-round 7.03 over John Konigshofer and, in the semifinals, a 7.01 beat Robert Patrick. In the final, he ran Carlton Phillips, and a 6.99/198 got the victory over Phillips' 7.02/198. The next race went to Roy as well, the Empire Nationals at New York International. This time, his final round victim was Billy Huff. A 7.08 got the win over Huff's 7.18. His streak ended at the next IHRA race, the Summernationals, on July 9 at US 41 Morocco, Indiana. He qualified #1 with a 6.86 (Low ET) at 201.65, but in the first round, the Probe broke on the line, giving Jerry Yeoman a single into round two. Hill qualified second behind his hired driver, Mike Bell, at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. His 6.86/201.70 followed Bell's 6.86/201. Craig Hankinson fouled against him in the first round, and Roy's 6.90/199.95 advanced. In the second round, his 6.92/199.11 defeated John Montecalvo's 6.99/199. In the semifinal, both he and Doug Kirk ran 6.97 (Hill at 198), but Kirk got the win light. Hill got some revenge when his driver, Bell, beat Kirk in the final. |
