Notes: Tommy was driving Gary Richard's Mustang at Maple Grove for an eight-car show in May. His first-round race was very strange. He faced Tim Kushi, and the Mustang lost fire while doing his pre-race burnout. His crew hurried to his aid and refired the car, but Kushi's motor was overheating all this time. The two finally got staged and raced, with Hall's 7.27/197.28 getting the "win" light. But due to his getting burnt down on the line. Tim was reinstated into the semifinal. |

Notes: Vega originally started as an AA/FA. It is a Lindblad chassis. He stretched the frame and we made longer brackets for the rearend mount. It had a 392. We were helped on the engine build by King and Marshall. D+D performance helped as the sponsor. It was the shortest car in the country at 101 in long. - Paul Miller |

Notes: Non-flip-top Camaro. Originally listed as 8.681/171.42. Replaced those with times from OCIR Mfg. Meet at 11/25/67. We need to confirm that those times were run in this car. Ran 8.30/172.80, 8.01/185.18, and 7.94/180.72. | Dick was at Thompson on July 3 for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. The Mustang driver was considered one of the top FCs at the time. Dick didn't let that bug him as he beat Lawton three straight. In their first race, Harrell got out on Lawton and won with an 8.69. The second race saw Harrell run 8.14/169.17 to win, and in the final race, Bill finally got the jump on the Camaro, but Dick drove around him to win with an 8.43/165.74. It was hard to believe the engine was a stock 427 Chevy except for a Howards cam and the injectors. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/25/67 |

Notes: Dated photos confirm this car ran under the banner of "Fred Gibb Super Camaro Dealers" in the summer of '69. 7.37 Green Valley ick Harrell was the model drag racer of the 1960s. His race cars were immaculate his car haulers were kept clean, and Harrell's interaction with sponsors and fans was second to none. Known as "Mr. Chevrolet," Harrell was one the most successful racers in AHRA drag racing history. Dick raced a series of stockers, super stockers, and factory experimentals until reaching the funny car ranks. Many felt his best funny car was the Fred Gibb-sponsored 1969 Camaro. Don Hardy built the car in his Floydada, Texas, shop. The Camaro featured a 427 Chevrolet Rat for power backed by an automatic transmission. The car won many match races during 1969, running a best of 7.35 at 200 MPH plus. Info provided by James Ibusuki. - BS | On February 16, Harrell ran 7.81 for the Miami-Hollywood track record. Also ran 7.58 at Bristol. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Howell was at Rockingham on April 19 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was the third AHRA Grand American race. He was the low qualifier for AHRA's "seeded" entries with a 7.35. His 7.52 defeated Malcolm Durham in round two, and in the semifinal, his 7.57 stopped Clyde Morgan. In the final, he faced Gene Snow, and Snow had run 7.16 while winning his semifinal race. Jay really needed to pick it up. However, it was not in the cards as Snow got the victory with a 7.14 with an early shut-off speed of 168 while Howell ran 7.45/193.54 for the runner-up honors. Jay drove this car at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.82/170 and in round two a 7.69/185.56 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.84/181. The "Snake" got back in on the "break rule." The two were to race again in the semifinal, but Howell blew his transmission on the burnout. Prudhomme advanced and went on to win the event. Jay was the Shop Foreman at Logghe Stamping Co. AKA Warhorse. Ran 7.15/199.87 in win at AHRA Detroit race. |

Notes: Hughes attempted to qualify for the AHRA Winternationals but failed to make the show. At the NHRA Winternationals, Hughes qualified #8 with a 7.66 (low qualifier was 7.53). He beat Steve Bovan in the first round, and a holeshot 7.71 in round two beat Larry Arnold's quicker 7.58. He faced Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" in the semifinals, and he fouled, advancing Reyes into the final. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Candies and Hughes debuted their new 'Cuda. They made a deal and had Reyes drive their '69 car at the race. In qualifying, the old car out-qualified the new one. Leonard ran 7.28/202 for the #4 spot, while the old car qualified one spot higher in #3 with a 7.21/208 (Top Speed). Both made their way to the final, with the old car's times being much better than the new one's. Times for Hughes were 7.32 over Huston Platt in Tommy Smith's Dart and 7.34 in the semifinals over Bobby Rowe's 7.39 in the "Super Duster." By comparison, Reyes ran 7.15 and 7.107. In the final, the two staged, and after the light turned green, Reyes waited a very long time before leaving the line. Leonard took the victory with a 7.29/202.24, but Reyes still almost caught him and had to lift, running 7.12/191.08. In the semifinals, Reyes had run 206. LaPlace held a Funny Car vs. Top Fuel race on March 15. Hughes won all three of his races, running 7.55/187.11, 7.35/202.24, and 7.36/205.01. On April 12, the Candies and Hughes team was at Amarillo for a match race against Kelly Chadwick. Hughes won both the first two races to sew up the match, but they ran a final race, and Chadwick won with an 8.07 to Hughes' 8.08. The team was tough to beat at the Super Stock Nationals. It was a two-day affair, and on the first day, Leonard qualified #1 with a 7.24/200.44. He beat Phil Castronovo with a 7.22/202.70, while in round two, a 7.19 (Low ET) at 200.44 beat Rowe. Tom Sneden broke on the line in the Bob Banning Dodge in the semifinals, and Hughes 7.22 went into the final. Once again, he met his good friend Reyes. This time out, the outcome was reversed from the Gatornationals final. The "Hawaiian" took the win with a 7.35/201.34 over Leonard's 7.42/200.89. The following day (May 10), these two again worked their way to the final. This time Leonard got the victory with a 7.35. Later in May, LaPlace held a six-car show with all cars running three rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Leonard beat Kenny Bernstein in his first race with a 7.64/189.87. In his second race, Mart Higginbotham's 7.53/185 beat his 7.59/193.13. Hughes got all crossed up against Don Gay and lost his third race with a 7.95/147.70. His best ET did not advance to the final. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, Hughes qualified #4 with a 7.26. A first-round 7.30 beat John Dekker, and a 7.29/200 beat Bernstein's ailing Cougar in round two. He fell off to a 7.63/145 in the semifinals, losing to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 7.07/207 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. In July, Hughes competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. All cars made three runs. Leonard lost to Tommy Grove's "Cammer" powered Mustang in the first round. In his second race, a 7.47 beat Randy Walls, while in his third race, a 7.34 beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" Maverick. Leonard raced at the 900-foot track at Southeastern Dragway for the Dallas Funny Car Championships near the end of July. It was a sixteen-car show with many "name" drivers in attendance. Hughes' 7.13 in the first round beat Susman, but he lost to Shirl Greer in the second round. |

Notes: Strongest Chevy-powered Funny of '69. Ran a 7.60/191.88 at Englishtown in March. Set a 187.50 Maple Grove track record. On April 13, Larson faced Frank Oglesby for a match race at Cecil County. Bruce's 7.79/191.48 won the first race of the match when Frank's Cougar broke. Bruce made a second-round single to win the match when the Cougar couldn't be repaired in time. Another match race was run in April at US 131, Martin, Mich., against Ed Schartman. A first-round 8.29/187.88 beat Ed's 8.42/172.41. Larson had transmission problems in the second round, and Ed's 8.37/173.41 won. In the third round, Larson won to take the match. In May, he raced at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet Invitational but fouled against Mel Perry in the first round. On May 24, he raced Schartman's second car driven by Arnie Behling at Suffolk for a match race. Larson beat Arnie two straight with runs of 7.80/154.10 and 7.56/180.00 to win the match. He was at Cecil County the next day for their Funny Car Manufacturers Meet. Bruce set a track record 7.46 at 193 (Top Speed), but he didn't make it past the first round as he fouled against Jim Liberman. Bruce cracked off the 7.33 at Budds Creek, Maryland, on May 30. It was during a six-car show that he set the track record. He won his first-round race with a 7.95/187.88 over Schartman's 8.11/178. In the semifinals, he ran the 7.33/189.46 to beat Liberman's 7.92/185. This put him into the final against Lew Arrington in the "Brutus." A final round 7.84/187.88 won when Lew got crossed up and shut off to 9.16/157. In June, he returned to Maple Grove for another match race with Schartman. This time, he beat Ed three straight with a best of 7.69/187.88 for the track speed record. On June 8, he ran at the New England Funny Car Championships, where a first-round single (7.98) advanced when Pete Gates lost fire on the line. In the second round, Liberman's 7.61/190 beat his off-pace 8.22/189. Another match race against Schartman was run at York US 30 on June 21. A big holeshot by Ed in the first race gave the Cougar a 7.86/182 win over Larson's quicker 7.62. Bruce lost fire on the line, so Ed raced the backup car of Al Graeber and won, giving him the match race win, but Larson wanted a final attempt at a win, so they lined up for a final race. Sure enough, Larson got out of shape, and Ed's 7.95/180 gave him three straight victories. Bruce did much better the following week on June 28 at Budds Creek, Maryland, where he beat Charlie Allen two straight. At Capitol's King of King's Funny Car race on July 16, Roy Gay's 8.03/179.28 beat his out-of-shape 8.11/180.72 in the first round. At the Cars Magazine Funny Car Nationals on July 20, a first-round 7.61/189.46 beat Ron Rivero (7.72/190.66), but in the second frame, Arrington's 7.50/192 beat Bruce's 7.77/171.16. A big win came at Sunset Dragway's fifth annual Funny Car Championships, where he set a 5.09 eighth-mile track record before beating Schartman in the final of the ten-car field. A match race against Jim Liberman was run on August 2 at York US 30, where Jim beat him two straight with two 7.56s at 191. Bruce's best was a 7.65/189. At the US Nationals, he was the top qualified Chevy with a 7.43/195.22 (qualifying sixth). He had the Chevy fans screaming when his first-round 7.43/194.38 advanced when Schartman fouled. He upset Don Schumacher, who lost a transmission in the second round with a 7.35. The fans were on their feet for the semifinal race between him and Danny Ongais. But Larson fouled away a 7.48; Ongais' 7.27 would've been hard to beat anyway. On September 21 at Epping for the New England Funny Car Championships, Paul Stefansky's 7.70/175 beat him in round two when Bruce lost third gear. On October 26, he won at Connecticut over an eight-car field, setting a 7.42 track record. He ran 7.42/194.38 and 7.50/196.50 before beating the Super' Cuda in the final with a 7.48/196.50. - Ron Howard | Ted Pappacena photo of the modern recreation of the car. |
