Notes: Ron took over the driving chores of this car in July. His first outing with the car was at the Rockford Manufacturer's meet run on July 23. Colson did not set the world on fire there as he was getting used to his new ride. | At the 1972 OCIR Manufacturers Meet, Ron's 6.57/218.97 earned him a spot in the final against eighteen-year-old Billy Meyer (6.51/218.97). In that final, which pitted the two lowest ET cars, he lost a tire-smoking race when his 7.82/194.38 was beaten by Billy's 7.37/183.67. Third alternate at the NHRA Supernationals in Ontario at 6.564/215.31.

Notes: Jake was runner-up to Leroy Goldstein, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car at the second NHRA Division 2 race at Suffolk in May. He was also runner-up to Don Cain at the second NHRA Division 1 race at Sanair. In that final, both he and Cain had problems, and his 24.00/28.46 lost to Cain's 17.96/39.64. That's got to be some kind of record for the slowest fuel funny car final. Jake then went to Englishtown for its FC Spectacular race. His 6.65/216.86 qualified #1, but he got out of shape against eventual winner Lew Arrington and shut down early. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals but failed to make the show. In late July, Jake was at Tri City Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.66, but an opening round 6.80 lost to Ron O'Donnell's 6.52. The next stop was at Epping, New England, for a sixteen-car show. He lost in the first round but came back out and made two more runs, a 6.81/207 and a 6.72/202. Shortly after this, he returned to Englishtown for a ten-car show. Unfortunately, an off-pace 7.16/197 lost to Gary Bolger's 6.79/216 in the "Golddigger" in the first round. Crimmins also competed at the Dixie Classic at Suffolk, but a 7.02 in the first round lost to Roy Harris' 6.88 in the "Frantic Ford." At the NHRA Division 1 final, Jake lost to Tom Sneden in the first round. He was running well at the New England Funny Car Nationals. A 6.87/211 beat Pee Wee Wallace's 6.96/203 in round one, but he lost to Dave Mudrack driving the "Warhorse" in round two. Iron Block.

Notes: Durham spent the off-season completing a new Logghe-chassised Camaro that proved to be one of his best rides. He clocked 7.5-second elapsed times regularly in 1968 and broke the 200-mph barrier in 1969. - NHRA | Malcolm was at Orlando for the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships on February 18. He qualified for the show but hurt his motor and could not run. On May 5, he was at the Funny Car Invitational at Aquasco, but he fouled against Clare Sanders in the first round. Durham was at Cecil County for the Fuel Showdown on May 18. He was caught napping on the line by Arnie Beswick in the first round, when Malcolm's 8.16/180 lost to Beswick's 8.34/156. He faced off against Beswick in a best two out of three match race at Aquasco on June 16. Malcolm had a bad day losing two straight. In the first race, he lost fire, and Arnie soloed to a win. In the second race, his throttle linkage broke, and he lost to Arnie's off pace 9.74/124. He was at Cecil County for the CARS Magazine All-Star International race in July. In the first round, he ran an 8.43/176 that lost to Frank Federici's "Shark" at 7.95/187. Another match race was run on August 4 at Gary, Indiana. His opponent was Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" Charger this time. Once again, Malcolm had problems and lost two straight. The first race saw Dyer's 7.74/180 just outright beat Durham's 8.35/150. In the second race, he blew a transmission and lost to Gary's 7.71/185. Durham did much better at Connecticut in early September when he faced off against Bill Lawton. Malcolm won the first race when Lawton's Mustang blew an engine. Bill could not run, and Durham soloed for the next race and won the match. The "Strip Blazer" Camaro became stronger and stronger as the season progressed. He won at his home track, Aquasco, for the first time on September 22. It was supposed to be an eight-car show, but Clare Sanders arrived late and Tommy Grove had no car, so only six cars ran. An 8.03/175.43 in the first round, beat Mel Perry, while in the semifinal, Durham got the odd-lot single and ran 8.12/178.21. In the final, he faced Bobby Wood, and his 8.20/175.78 got him the victory over Woods' 8.26/174. On September 29, he ran a best of three match race against Larry Reyes in the super tough "Super 'Cuda" at Englishtown. Reyes won the first race with a 7.71/190 when Durham lost a transmission and slowed to an 8.60/117.34. In the second race, the Camaro won with an 8.03, and in the third race, Malcolm wrapped up the match with a 7.94/183.66. Early in October, he beat Shirl Greer two straight at Houston. Every pass he made beat the former track record. He ran 7.69/186 over Shirl's 7.81 in the first race and a 7.63/188 beat a crossed-up Greer in the second race. Malcolm made a solo third pass and set a 7.57 track record at 182.92. This photo was Malcolm's first flip-top funny car, '68 Logghe chassis, B&N Fiberglass Camaro, Bergler tin, supercharged Chevy 427, B&M Turbo-Hydramatic 3 speed auto.

Notes: Big budget with Charger top. On March 16 at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show, Garcia ran 8.01/180.36 and 8.13/178.57 to reach the final against Fritz Callier. A final 8.12/181.44 won the meet over Callier's 8.47/178. He faced Tommy Grove in a best of three match race at Kingston on April 13. In the first race, Grove not only fouled, but he broke a rear end as well, so Garcia's 8.93 took the win. Grove was unable to repair his Mustang so Henry made two solo passes to win the match. He ran 8.98/173.03 and 7.70/180.00. Henry raced at the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping on June 8, running a first-round 7.83/170.50 over Ron Rivero's off pace 8.59/169. Unfortunately, Tony Wahlay's 8.13 beat him in round two. On July 6, he faced Leonard Hughes at LaPlace for a match race. He ran an 8.02/162.74 in the first race that lost on Hughes' 7.78/196 and in the second race he broke a driveshaft giving Hughes a two straight match race win. Also in July, he raced at the Sunset Dragstrip 1/8 mile Championships. Joe Black fouled against him in the first round, and a 5.10 by eventual winner Bruce Larson beat him in round two. At the Drag World Funny Car Championships at Dragway 42, West Salem, he fouled against Don Biggers in the first round. On September 7, he raced at an eight-car show at Suffolk where all eight-cars made three runs. An off pace 9.70-95.56 lost his first race to Arnie Behling's 7.90/178. In the second race, a blown transmission gave Lew Arrington an 8.06/129 single. In the third race, a 7.75/166.97 beat Ron Rivero's close, 7.76. He raced at Connecticut the following day (September 8) with and there he beat Bob Veselka with an 8.64/125.34 in the first round. He advanced past a broken Mel Perry in the second round with a 9.16/150.75. In the semifinals, Rivero got him back for the loss the day before. A holeshot 8.19/183 by Ron beat Henry's quicker 8.11/143.31.

Notes: Don was still running his '67 car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Since NHRA had no Funny Car class, he had to run in Super Eliminator. Of the Funny Cars that showed up and qualified for the class, Gay did the best. He beat the Joe Davis AA/Altered in the opening round with an 8.18/181.80 and in round two, Sush Matsubara failed to fire, so an 8.37/161.57 advanced. In the semifinals, his 8.35/182.18 was stopped by Richard Galli's A/FD.

Notes: Leroy ran the first six-second run with a 6.95 pass on June 30, 1970, at New York National while testing Firestone tires. At Detroit in July 1970, the team ran 6.96/206, followed by a 6.99/202, and then burned to the ground. The team replaced the car, ran the first NHRA 6-second at Indy 9/70 at 6.92, and then bettered it with a 6.85. They also ran 6.92 at US 30. - Danny White | The Israeli Rocket took Funny Car Eliminator at the 1970 Springnationals (Dallas) with a winning 7.03/208.33. Though reputedly having the better car at the later Indy Nationals, he smoked it and dropped the final against Schumacher in Funny Car Eliminator. - RT | The Ramchargers' Challenger debuted in Jan at the AHRA Winternationals, where Goldstein's first run ever with the car was a 7.48/204.08 in qualifying. He lasted until the second round when he fouled away a 7.44/200.88 and lost to Larry Reyes, who ran a 7.54 in the Hawaiian. Then the team went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and failed to qualify. On March 8, Goldstein was at Lions for the second of ten AHRA Grand American races. While the "Ramchargers" didn't win or even make the final round, Leroy set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.14/209.79. He was at Rockingham for AHRA's third race, the Pro-Am Championships, but he fouled in round two against Clyde Morgan. More bad luck came for the team at the fourth AHRA Grand American at Frontier International. Leroy looked like a sure bet to make it to the final after beating Dean Dillingham in the first round with a 7.79/145.86. In round two, a 7.49/173.54 took out Mart Higginbotham, and a semifinal 7.42/197.80 beat Gene Snow's 7.77/173. But in that semifinal race, he lost a motor, and Snow was reinstated for the final. Near the end of May, Goldstein was in Detroit for the AHRA Grand American. Once again, he lost in the semifinals, despite a stout 7.31/198.72. Goldstein was long overdue for a win when the team pulled into Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals on June 7. Once again, things didn't quite go their way. A 7.41 in the first round beat Jay Howell, but in round two, his 7.63/175.78 lost to eventual winner Snow's 7.39/203. The following week (June 14), everything clicked. The team had just installed a Detroit Locker; this was the first time out with the new rear end. Leroy qualified #2 with a 7.10/210.34 at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 7.14 advanced when Bernie Williams fouled, while in round two, his 7.24/204.54 beat Bobby Rowe's 7.74/134 in the "Super Duster." He stepped up to a 7.07/207.37 to beat Leonard Hughes in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Snow. Leroy ran Low ET at 7.03/208.33 to take the victory over Gene's 7.56/148. A few days later, he was at New York National. On Friday, June 19, he warmed up for the race to be run on Saturday. His warm-up passes shocked the onlookers. He ran 7.11/208.42, then a 7.07/206.42, and finally a 7.02/209.92. As good as these times were, Saturday's were even better. It was an eight-car show, and Leroy won his first round with the sport's first generally accepted "six," a 6.98/208.80. In the semifinals, he backed it up with a 6.97/206.42 that beat Jim Liberman, and in the final, an even better 6.95/209.78 won the meet over Terry Hedrick. They were also going to run on Sunday, but it was rained out. In July, he faced Fritz Callier in a best of three match race at US 30, where Leroy won all three races, running a best of 6.93. This car made its last appearance on Sunday, July 19, in Detroit. Leroy set a track record 6.96 at 206.88 in the first round while beating the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. He got a single in the second round and ran 6.99/202, but the Challenger burst into flames at the finish line. The car burnt for almost an hour once the magnesium caught fire; there was no putting it out. Nothing left of the car was salvageable, but Goldstein was not hurt. The "Ramchargers" had a new car built, and it was 10 inches narrower and 100 lbs. lighter than the car that burnt. The best NHRA times for Goldstein this year were his great 6.832/212.76 at Indy (Bob Frey).

Notes: Won 1971 Gators in a dominant performance. Quickest and fastest funny car run in history at the time, but by the end of the year, Bill Leavitt lowered the mark to 6.48. | Goldstein was tough to beat driving the "Ramchargers" car in '71. He started the season at Lions on January 10 for the AHRA Grand American. He was the low qualifier of the "seeded" entries with a 7.16. In the first round, he improved to a 6.96/207.85 that beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's late 6.89/206. Another 7.16 at 201.79 advanced when Don Prudhomme broke a rear end. Unfortunately, Leroy broke in the semifinals against eventual winner Gene Snow. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 7.22/205 qualified #11. Goldstein's 7.16/208.81 beat a Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max in the opening round.” In round two, he ran 7.14 to beat Mike Snively in Jim Annin's car. He improved to a 7.09 in the semifinals to trailer Jake Johnston driving Snow's second car. He went up against Butch Maas, driving the "Hawaiian" in the final, and despite running his best time of the weekend, a 7.08, he lost to Maas, who stepped up with a 6.93 for the victory. The AHRA Winternationals was held at Beeline Dragway in Arizona, and it featured a 32 car show. Goldstein was one of AHRA's seeded cars (guaranteed a spot in the show), and his 7.19 qualified #4 among that group. A 7.03 beat Ron Sutherland in the first round, but an off-pace 7.39/209.30 in round two lost to Gordon Mineo's 7.28/195. LaPlace held a four-car show before the Gatornationals, and Goldstein was declared the winner by winning all three of his races. He ran 7.09/192.71 to beat Chris Karamesines' new Mustang, a 7.07/189.47 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster," and he was to race in the final. Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Minick blew his engine on the burnout, and Leroy made an easy pass for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Goldstein dominated the race. He qualified #1 with a 6.80/219.51 and then opened eliminations with a 6.71/220.58 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Larry Reyes. In round two, another strong 6.75/220.44 dropped Dick Rosberg's 6.96/190 in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro. He then ran 13.96/59.32 to win in the semifinals when Phil Castronovo had his throttle stick open and crashed into the guardrail. He went up against Rowe in the final. The "Super Duster” had broken in the semifinals and was unable to make the call. So, Leroy ran 9.28 to pick up the win. In April, he won over an eight-car field at Aquasco. There he ran 7.04/199.10 and 7.09 over Tom Sneden and Pete Hill to reach the final, where he faced Sneden again, who had gotten back into the show on the "break rule." Once again, Leroy beat the "Bob Banning" Challenger. The finals times were 7.06/176.12 to Tom's 7.40/183. The "Ramchargers" were at Edgewater for a best of three match against the track record holder, Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the first race, Leroy ran the track's first "six" while beating Minick. He reset his own record with a strong 6.79 to win two straight. Leroy made a third solo pass when Pat could not run after burning a couple of pistons in their second race. Another win came at Capitol Raceway on April 17. There he came away with a 6.81 track record, and in the final, he beat Tommy Grove's Ford-powered car. The following day (April 18), he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 among the "seeded" cars with a 6.93/207.36. Goldstein got a solo in the first round, but he fouled away a 6.89 against Snow in round two. Goldstein was at US 131 in May for an eight-car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he did reset his own 7.03 track record with his 6.81/210 defeat of Tharp in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand American. Leroy beat Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered car in the first round, with a 6.98/190.26, but the Challenger got out of shape in the second round while facing Cecil Lankford. Leroy corrected, and the rear end housing ripped free of the chassis. The body flew off, and the car skidded down the track on its chassis. Things weren't right with the car when it showed up at Baton Rouge for the AHRA Southern Nationals. The new rear end wasn't properly aligned, and the car was torn down and rebuilt in the pits. The work paid off with a first-round win over Paul Gordon driving the "Red Baron" with a 7.01/210.77, but in the second round, the car went up in tire smoke and lost to Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. It was then off to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. Goldstein had won the race the previous year, but he lost to Rowe in the opening round this time. More bad luck hit the team at Martin, Michigan, on July 3 when they had an engine let go, and the car caught fire. The body started to break up, and the air got inside, lifting the entire car off the track for a short distance before the body broke free. Leroy still went through the lights with a 6.93/213! But the team was already mounting their third Challenger body since the start of the '71 season. The team wasn't down for long as on July 18, Goldstein set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.80/215.32 in qualifying #1 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A first-round 6.88/208 beat a fireballing Sam Miller, and in round two, he made an easy solo as the field was short. In the semifinals, Leroy’s 7.02/208 lost to his future employer Leonard Hughes' 6.89/211. Two days later (July 20), the team was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, Goldstein failed to reach the final. The last weekend of July meant just one thing, the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. Goldstein won all three of his races, but his times were not good enough to get him into the final round. He started with a 7.01/204.54 over Gary Bolger's 7.03/209 in the "Golddigger." A second-round 6.91/209.30 beat the only GM-powered car at the meet, Dean LaPole's "King Camaro," and a third-round 6.92/198.67 got around Tom McEwen, who broke. August started with a runner-up finish to Tom Hoover at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A week later (August 7), the team was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Thirteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car show. All ran the first-round, with the low eight ETs advancing into round two. Goldstein just made the show with his 7.29 getting him the #8 spot. It did him little good as the car came up ailing in the first round, and lost to "Flash Gordon" Mineo's 7.39. On August 15, Leroy was at York US 30 for the AHRA Nationals. He set the Top Speed of the meet on Saturday night during qualifying with a 6.87/220.58. On Sunday, he began eliminations by beating Johnny Roderiques. But in the second round, the team overpowered the track and smoked the tires, losing to Mart Higginbotham. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for a four-car show on August 22, but he and his opponent, Dale Pulde driving the M/T Pinto, probably made the track promotor cry on their first run. Both had their rear ends break free from the chassis. Then came the AHRA Grandnationals at Marion County, Ohio, on August 29. A 6.97/214 qualified #1, and Leroy lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to Lankford. If the team didn't already have enough bad luck, the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis had more in store. During qualifying, Leroy was making a run with Tom Prock driving Al Bergler's Vega. Prock lost a wheel, veered into Goldstein's lane, and clipped the right rear of the Challenger. The "Ramchargers" team thrashed all night to get the car ready for eliminations, as they had already qualified #8 in the show. All the hard work went for naught as in the opening round, Richard Tharp drove the "Blue Max" to a 6.72/216 to beat Goldstein's 6.93/214. After the Indy race, the team stopped at US 30, Gary, Indiana, for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All cars were to run one race, with the lowest ET car being declared the winner. Goldstein smoked the tires to a 7.51/203 in a loss to Dick Harrell's 6.99/217. Dick would lose his life two days later in a racing accident in Toronto, Canada. We needless to say, Goldstein did not win that race. Before the month was out, Arnie Behling replaced Goldstein as the driver for this car.

Notes: Shirl ran 9.78 at 100.44 in a first-round loss at the 1968 All American Funny Car championships in Bristol, TN. He faced off against Malcolm Durham late in October for a best-of-three-match race at Houston. He lost two straight to Malcolm but ran a 7.81 in a losing effort in his first race. He got out of shape and shut down in his second race. | The Tension Charger was a Ramchargers car that had been crashed. Dad front-halved & re-vamped the chassis & mounted the body himself. Later, he & Don Gatliff cut & sectioned the body to make it a Mini-Charger. - Brian Greer

Notes: This was Greer's most successful car. He started the '73 season by qualifying #4 with a 6.84/213.77 in a sixteen-car field at Miami-Hollywood in Jan for its Funny Car Nationals. In round one, he advanced with a 6.80, and in the second round, he got lucky as the car threw its blower belt. But Greer's 27.31/51.07 still won as Al Hanna's "Eastern Raider" Pinto had died on the line. Greer's Mustang lost fire on the line in the semifinal, and Shirl had to watch as Al Marshall soloed into the final with the "Tyrant." In February, he went to Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway for its Spring Drag race. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 7.36 beat Richard Tharp, who got out of shape in the "Blue Max." A second-round 7.50 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.46. Shortly after that, he was back in Miami for another eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.98/207.85 lost to Colson's 6.80/209 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." On March 4, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he got out of shape and shut off against Ron O'Donnell, whose 7.17 advanced in the "Big Noise" 'Cuda. Early in March, he was also at Miami for a best of three match race against Pete Miner in the "Gold Coast Duster." It was not a good race for Greer as he lost two straight. In the first race, the car pitched a blower. After fixing the car, he came back out, got out of shape, and shut down to 9.02/203.16, losing to Miner's 7.27/190. He was the fourth alternate at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, running a 6.70/217.91 best. Shirl was back in Miami for another show in March. He qualified #11, but his 6.67/216.86 lost to Ed O'Brien's 6.68/216. His next stop was at Phenix City for the NHRA Division Two opener. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, and shut off to a 9.33/99.33 loss to Harry Hudson's 8.31/171. He was in Dallas late in April for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals, but he lost to Leroy Goldstein in the "Candies and Hughes" car in round two. A 6.94 qualified #8 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He advanced past Gary Litton in the first round, with a 9.21. Round two was another easy run when Joe Lee was shut off on the line when his Charger had an oil leak. In the semifinals, Greer ran a good 6.76/205.37, but he lost to eventual winner Mike Snively in the "Mr. Ed" car, which beat him with a 6.55/221. He got a win at the third NHRA Division Two race held at Blaney Drag Strip on June 2. In the first round, he got a solo as his would-be opponent, Preston Davis, had lost his car in a qualifying fire. In the semifinal, Greer's 7.20/199 beat out of shape Frank Oglesby. He faced Miner in the final, and a 7.01/201.84 gave Greer the victory. He was at Bristol on June 17 for the IHRA Springnationals but lost to Colson in round two. Later in June, he drove Billy Holt's Vega at Atlanta, but he was back in his own car when he won the Division Two race at Miami-Hollywood. Shirl's 7.17/207 in the opening round beat Harry Hudson's "Super Ford." He had soloed at 9.88 in the semifinal when Jim Nicoll's Vega caught fire on the line. In the final, he faced Smith, who was driving the "Sir Wells" Charger. Shirl's holeshot 6.88/191 beat Smith's quicker 6.84/211. On September 8, he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. He lost fire in the opening round against eventual winner Billy Meyer. A week later (September 16), he was at Bristol for the IHRA All-American race. Greer lasted until round two, where his 6.66/215.82 lost to eventual winner Dale Emery's 6.48/225 in the "Jeg's" Camaro. It was back to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. In the first round, opponent Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max," lost a blower belt, so Greer advanced easily. But in round two, he lost to another eventual winner Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega. At the NHRA World Finals held at Amarillo Dragway, Greer ran well. He qualified #1 on the Eastern half of the ladder with a 6.77. In the first round, he advanced at 6.82/193.96 when Art Ward lost fire, and in the second round, his 6.72/215.31 beat John Dekker's 6.79. In the semifinals, his strong 6.64 (no speed recorded) lost to Frank Hall's 6.42/225.56. Frank would go on to win. That was Shirl's last NHRA national event of the year. On October 14, Shirl was at Lakeland for the IHRA Nationals. He had an early exit as his first-round 6.96/209.30 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.85 in Don Schumacher's Vega. Wouldn't you know it? Beadle went on to win the race. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.540/221.67 at Indy Nationals. Formerly listed 6.475/225.00 times, but I think those were from 1975. Let me know if you can prove otherwise. - BP | Gorgeous car. A striking departure from Shirl's earlier rides. | The Mach I Chain Lightning Mustang was started by Chuck Finders & completed by Cecil Hicks. — Brian Greer. | Times and info from National Dragster, 2/01/74, for Lakeland ad claim of 6.57/221. Ran 6.62 at Dallas.
