Notes: Paul attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he had all kinds of problems and could only muster a best of 9.133/88.87, obviously failing to qualify. Atlanta hosted an eight-car show in March. Traction was marginal at best. Only one car broke into the "fives" in qualifying. Smith pushed Castronovo's car to a 6.46/191.48 to qualify #6. He won his first-round race with a 12.55 when Kenny Bernstein fouled away a 6.13. In the semifinals, Paul's 6.07/236.22 lost to John Martin's 6.00/243. Paul qualified #6 at 5.906/250.13 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but eliminations were delayed one week and held on the same date as the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Doc Halladay took his spot on race day at Gainesville. Paul did run at Darlington, qualifying #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.98/247.25. He worked his way into the final, taking the runner-up spot to Dale Pulde. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Paul ran 5.858/232.55 to qualify #6. He beat Ray Higley in the first round, 5.987/222.99 to 6.26/236, before smoking the tires to a 7.552/121.35 that lost to Jim Head in round two. In May, he won the third IHRA race of the season, the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. There he beat Bernstein in the final. There was a light field at Baton Rouge in June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, so qualifying was easy. Smith ran 6.132/210.32 to qualify #12, but in the first round, his 5.994/230.82 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.76/253. He qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.330/228.42 and beat Jim Head in round one, 6.096/229.47 to 6.11/243. He lost to Tom McEwen in round two, 5.81/249 to 6.205/194.13. The following week (June 22), he was in St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Paul beat Pat Walsh in the first round before losing to eventual winner Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals. Paul ran 5.788/249.58 to qualify #9 at NHRA Englishtown. He lost to Mark Oswald in round one, 5.69/258 to 5.885/244.83. Paul was the first alternate at NHRA Indy at 5.883/245.03. At the Keystones, Paul was the #4 qualifier at 5.763/240.89. He beat Pat Walsh in round one, 5.811/247.79 to 10.19/77, but lost to Tim Grose in round two, 5.97/228 to a troubled 12.11/67. Paul was the sixth alternate at Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.403/223.38 effort. He was the fifth alternate at the NHRA World Finals at 5.918/243.63. AKA Utica Flash. Paul also drove Gary Craven's Nitro Fever Corvette on the IHRA trail. Were any of these NHRA times run in that car instead? The Custom Body car was confirmed through Columbus.

Notes: Blown fuel, Howell 109" tube steel chassis. A Feburary 3/1967, Drag News booking ad says the car ran 8.30/175, probably in 1966. Car was run into 1967, then sold to Dick Stokes, who ran it as an injected funny car on the UDRA circuit as the "Blue Bandit" into 1969. Don Gay, like Arnie Beswick, was a tried and true Pontiac racer. Dubbed the "Texas Teenager" by the drag racing press, Gay started racing stockers and super stockers when he was barely legal to drive out his father's Pontiac dealership. Don Gay's father not only bought racecars for his sons Don and Roy, he also bought Houston International Dragway. In 1964, the Gays built their first funny car out of a GTO. That car was replaced by an all-new 1965 GTO for Don and the old car was passed on to Roy. The Gays contracted famed racer Jay Howell to build the new car, an all fiberglass machine with a full tube chassis. The 421 Pontiac in the "Infinity" GTO was built by James Osteen, who was hired to oversee the Gay's racing operation. Don match raced regularly at Houston International and toured across the country. The beautiful GTO ran deep into the eights. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Draglist.com) ET Irwindale CA 1966 (1/13/67 Drag News) MPH Dickinson TX 1966 (12/23/66 Drag News)

Notes: Bruce Larson was one of the best Chevrolet funny car racers of all time. The "USA-1" 1967 Camaro was the second funny campaigned by Larson. It was one of the best in the northeast. The car featured a Logghe Stage II chassis and a 427 Chevrolet engine backed by an automatic transmission. The Camaro held the NHRA National record at 7.41 seconds in 1968 when he amazed everyone at SSDI Nats with the Low ET. That run hurt the motor and Bruce had to put in backup motor for the rest of the weekend (still went rounds). The "USA-1" 67 Camaro raced until 1969. Larson now makes exhibition runs with the restored car. (Photos provided by Mike Ditty. Info provided by James Ibusuki and draglist.com) | Capitol Raceway held its Mr. Chevrolet race on August 13 and it was fitting that Larson took the crown. He beat Joe Black in round one, with a 7.83/178.21 while in round two his 7.80/184.94 beat Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette. In the semifinals, he beat Mel Perry with a 7.90/182.18 to move into the final against Dick Bourgeois. Larson took the victory with a final round 7.90/189. Won NE Dragway Funny Car Nats in 68 at 7.71/189.87. Cecil held a best of three match race between Larson and Jim Liberman on October 6. Bruce won the first race with a quick-leaving 7.64/188.28 over JJ's 7.59/187." Jungle Jim's" 7.78/187 won the second race when Larson fouled away an 8.03/183.66. In the deciding race, both ran well, but Liberman's 7.81/183 won the match over Larson's close 7.82/186.72. Bruce set both ends of Maple Grove track record with a 7.62/186.72 in October. On October 13 he faced off against Clare Sanders driving Liberman's #2 car in a best of three match race at Englishtown. He lost the match when he fouled in the first two races although he had run the best time of the two at 7.78. The two came out for one more run and Bruce beat Sanders' 7.88 with a 7.65. The track record was 7.64 at the time. The two had a rematch on November 3 at New England. This time Larson won all three races with times of 8.23/155.97,a track record 7.59 at 184.42 and 7.98/171.42. Sanders was not running well, as his best was 8.23/177. He was at Irwindale on November 9 for the Mopar vs Chevy Funny Car Race. A tire-smoking 8.28/180.36 lost to Charlie Allen in the first round, while an 8.34 in round two lost to Steve Bovan's 8.33 in Nelson Carter's Charger in round two. Bruce got his lone win in round three where he beat Larry Reyes. He lost three straight against Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's "Cuda at Irwindale on November 28. Bruce smoked the tires in the first and third rounds while his best run, a 7.93/182.92 in the second race, lost to Siroonian's 7.88/186. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Bruce broke a pinion shaft in the first round, against Leonard Hughes. In his second race, something in the drivetrain broke and his 8.39/176.81 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.69/193. He was unable to repair for his third race and Mike Burkhart replaced him.

Notes: When the Ford Motor Company commissioned Logghe Stamping Company to build four Mercury Comets, drag racing would change forever. The four Comets, raced by Don Nicholson, Ed Schartman, Jack Chrisman, and Kenz & Leslie, were far ahead of the competition in technology. They were even ahead of fellow FoMoCo racers who were racing Holman-Moody Mustangs. The three had everybody else catching up to them in 1966. The best-known of these four funny cars was Don Nicholson's "Eliminator I." The Comet's debut was less than graceful when the body came unlatched and flew off. Ford engineers burned the damaged body on the spot. The car was fixed, and the "Eliminator I" went on a tear. In 1966, Nicholson held off the heavier stock-bodied cars despite using an injected engine. A several hundred-pound weight advantage helped, but having Earl Wade tuning for him did not hurt. This was the first funny car into the 7-second zone with a 7.96/169 at Martin (info from Dennis Doubleday and Bill Duke). Additional note: This was the first Nicholson race car with an automatic (C-6 Ford). He preferred a stick, but period accounts report the centrally located driver's seat made it physically impractical to mount a manual shifter on the tunnel. | Classified S/XS due to extreme lightweight, despite not being supercharged. | This was the future of funny car racing. | As mentioned above, the tube-framed Comet debuted at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals. When the car made a run, the wind pushed against the body, and the latch holding it in place released. The body came loose at 159 mph and flew into the air. Don was OK, if not a little bit embarrassed. Good things were soon to come. The Comet returned to competition with the latch reversed and soon changed the face of Funny Car racing forever. On April 3, he faced Ronnie Sox for a best three out of five match at Cecil County. Don won the first race with a 9.50/155.97 over Sox's 9.62/148. Sox returned to win the second race with a 9.18/153 over "Dyno's" missed shift 13.84/47.36. Don ran his first-ever "eight" as his 8.94/157.61 beat Sox in the third race. To wrap things up, a track record 8.77/160.42 won the fourth race over a fouling Sox. On April 23, he beat Cecil Yother three straight at Lassiter Raceway. The MPH clocks were out, but Nicholson's times were 8.60, 8.82, and 8.91. He ran at Cecil County again on May 7. Once again, Don took the win. He won two straight with runs of 8.65/166.66 and 8.67/166.06. A week later (May 14), he was at Cordova for a best-of-three match against Arnie Beswick's Pontiac. Don won the first round when he limped through with a broken transmission. Arnie pulled a wheelstand and busted his oil pan. Don's 8.85/149.25 beat Beswick, who again stood it up on two wheels in the second race. Just for good measure, Don won the third race with an 8.81 when Arnie broke a trans. On May 21, he faced the "Mr. Norm" Dodge driven by Ron O'Donnell at US 131 Martin, Michigan. Don won two straight when O'Donnell fouled in the first race, and in the second race, "Dyno's" 8.78/164 won when Ron shut off. The next day (May 22), he faced Doug Thorley's Nova at the same track (US 131). Don again won two straight with an 8.99/159 best. Nicholson went to Union Grove on May 27 for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. He won easily, running 8.85 at 163 to take the win. Beswick got a rematch at Detroit on June 11. Once again, the Comet was too strong, winning three straight with times of 8.61/165.13, 8.62/165.13, and a solo of 8.57/166.66. Sox also got a rematch. It was a best-of-five at Aquasco on June 26. It did not go well for Sox as "Dyno" won three straight. Ronnie was running a full second slower than the Comet. The first race saw Don's 8.58/163.63 beat Sox at 9.42. The second race had Don set an 8.37 track record at 163.63 over Sox's 9.53/117, and Don reset the track record in the third race with an 8.35/166.97 over Ronnie's 9.66/148. Kinston was "Dyno's" next stop on July 10 for a best-of-three match against Don Gay. The Pontiac's transmission gave out in their first race, and Nicholson won with an 8.96. Gay replaced the transmission, and the two were set for their second race. Gay got a big jump on Nicholson, and it looked like he would win, but the Comet shot past just before the lights to win with an 8.85 over Gay's 9.01. The car was pretty much unbeatable in match races. Dick Landy gave it a try on July 16 at US 131 in a best two out of three. Don set an 8.56 track record at 150 in the first race when Landy shut off with a blown water hose. In the second race, Dick fouled, and Nicholson won with an 8.78/161. In the third race, Don made it three in a row with an 8.68/165, beating Landy's 8.94/154. On July 30, Don took a loss when he blew a transmission in the final against Mike Buckel in the "Ramchargers" Dart at Cecil County for the CARS Magazine Super Stock International. On August 13, Don reset the funny car world record at Motor City at 8.16/174 (Bret Kepner). On August 14, Don faced off against Maynard Rupp's "Chevoom," a Hemi-powered Chevelle. It was a best of three at National Trail. Don once again won three straight, but the competition was getting closer. In the first round, the Comet's 8.41/168.42 beat Rupp's 8.83/150. The second race saw Don's 8.47/170.70 beat the Chevelle's 8.74/163. And in the final race, "Dyno" set an 8.29 track record at 170.12 over Rupp's 8.70/164. Landy got another shot at Nicholson at Alton on August 20. Don won three straight, running times a half-second quicker than Landy's Dart. Don ran 8.56/159.01 and 8.53/171.75 against Dick's best of 8.97/146 and then ran 8.42/156.52 to win the match. Then the two met again at Gary, Indiana's US 30 the next day (August 21). Dick even managed to win the first race with an 8.83/166, beating Nicholson's out-of-shape 8.87/166.64. But Don returned to win the next two races and the match, running 8.65/169.19 and a track record 8.43/176.40. At the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis, Nicholson ran 8.41 and 8.31 in time trials. He lost to Ed Schartman in the final for the S/XS class. Gay was Don's next victim. The two met up at Cecil County on September 10 for a best-of-three match. "Dyno" won the first race with an 8.28, but he lost the second when the Comet broke a rear end. He returned to win the third race and the match with an 8.33/169.59. On September 17, history was made when Don beat teammate Schartman in a best of three at US 131. Nicholson ran a 7.96/169.10 while winning the match. It was the first seven-second run for a stock-bodied automobile. A week later, Don was at Capitol facing off with Landy again. The times were getting closer. Don won the first race with an 8.48/172.74 to Landy's 9.05/163. The second race and the match race win went to Nicholson when he beat Landy's 8.82/170 with an 8.70/152.02. Don blew a head gasket on this run and could not run the third race. Dick ran a solo pass of 8.55/172. Nicholson got beat in a match race on October 8 at Green Valley by Don Gay. Nicholson won the first race when Gay crossed the centerline, but "Dyno" broke a throttle cable in the second race, and Gay took the win. In the last race, Gay put a holeshot on the Comet that even a track record 8.68 failed to beat. On October 9, Don faced a newcomer to the Funny Car ranks, Larry Reyes, in a funny-looking Barracuda called the "Kingfish" with a blown fuel-burning Hemi. The two locked horns at Wichita, Texas, for a best two out of three match. Don won two straight with a best of 8.59/164, while Reyes' best was 8.95. Shortly after that, "Dyno" went to Virginia Beach for a match race against Sox. Nicholson won two straight with reported times of 7.92 and 7.94. Gay and Nicholson had a rematch at Houston on October 22. This time "Dyno" won two straight, running a track record 8.55/168.81. | Don's 8.35 at Aquasco equaled Arnie Beswick's 8.35 from March 1966. - Bret Kepner, 7/23

He ran a first-round 8.18/180 but lost to Don Nicholson's 7.99/172. At OCIR on January 14 for an eight-car show, he qualified seventh with an 8.29/177.86, but Terry Hedrick's first-round 8.28/182 beat his 8.43/168.22. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Winter meet, he qualified third with a 7.79/178.92 and ran another 7.79/176.12 over Mike Burkhart in the first round. A second-round 7.92/179.78 beat Kelly Chadwick's 8.44/162. He had an easy third-round win before meeting Don Nicholson in the semifinal. Both cars lost transmissions, but Don coasted across the line first. Shortly after that (February 4), he went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA did not have a Funny Car class at this time, so the cars had to qualify for Super Eliminator. Unfortunately, Loehr failed to qualify. On February 25, Loehr singled in the opening round with an 8.98/141 when Jack Chrisman had injector problems at the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An 8.14/169.17 beat a tire-smoking Clare Sanders in the second round. In the semifinal, he broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. On March 3, Irwindale held a sixteen-car show, and Dick's 8.21/180.72 qualified seventh. He lost a blower belt and the race in the first round when Fred Goeske's 8.03/182.18 beat his 8.23/153.74. A big win came at Riverside on March 24 for the HRM Championships. On April 13, Loehr was at OCIR for an eighteen-car show. All cars were to run the first round, with the eight lowest ETs advancing into round two. Dick's 8.30/175.78 beat Joe Pisano and advanced into round two. His opponent, Steve Bovan, broke, so he soloed with a 10.62. He faced Goeske in the semifinals. An 8.04/182.54 finished second best to Fred's 7.93/179. Another win came at OCIR for their Funny Car Team Championships on May 4. He ran as good as a first-round 7.86/188.66 before winning the final when Charlie Allen broke a rear end. He failed to win on May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships, but he set Top Speed at 185.16. He was at Detroit Dragway on June 28 for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships, but an off-pace 9.90/132.35 lost to Pat Minick's 8.12/172 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Cecil County in July for the CARS All-Star International meet, Dick ran a first-round 7.79/179.28 over Dick Bourgeois' 8.38 and went on to win the final Saturday with a 7.86/182.54 over Frank Federici's 8.25/181. He was at an eight-car show in Gary, Indiana, on July 30. He ran 7.80/188 (Top Speed) in the opening round of eliminations to beat Pat Minick's 7.99/182 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, his 7.77/185.71 beat Ed Schartman's 7.92/160. He faced Don Schumacher in the final, and another strong 7.76/175.47 gave Dick the title over Don's 7.97/183. On September 1 at Minnesota Dragways for an eight-car event, Dick lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, Tom's 7.62/191.88 over Dick's (8.02/175.43). Another win came on October 5 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. On November 16, Irwindale held a Ford vs. Mopar Championships, and Loehr's first-round 8.08/177.86 beat Larry Reyes' 8.10/181.08. A second-round 7.87/188.67 beat Fred Goeske's 7.99/182.18. He lost his third race to Dave Beebe's 8.36/185.33 when he got up on two wheels and shut down to a 13.47. He won two of his races at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on December 1, running a best of 7.95/179.28 over Goeske.

Notes: Arnie Beswick might not have been the biggest winner of the sixties, but he did put on a hell of a show. Beswick was a loyal Pontiac racer, though there was a short stint with a factory-supported Comet A/FX in early 1965. The "Tameless Tiger" 1963 funny car was home-built from 1963 lightweight factory Tempest parts and steel to replace the previous blown GTO's weight and wheelbase restrictions. Working doors, wheelbase mods, and leaf springs meant it was a little scary, to say the least. Beswick had already stepped up to blown nitro after beginning with gas in the previous GTO at the urging of future funny car star Frank Oglesby. This gave the greater Chicago area three blown nitro funny cars in 1964, including Gary Dyer in the Mr. Norm's Dodge, Ron Pellegrini's Super Mustang, and Beswick's goat. In addition to the wheelbase changes, the "Tameless Tiger" was rebuilt to be much lighter than when it first raced in A/FX. How much of the rare original FX vehicle was used is unknown. As a supercharged fuel car, it was a serious contender nationwide for the two seasons it was raced, noted for extreme wheelstands and top-end antics. The TT was crashed once by Arnie at Cecil County in early 1966 and again much more severely by driver Arnie Behling during a North Carolina match race in 1967. Beswick never fixed it, and it was relegated to the Morrison junkpile. - Geoff Stunkard | Mr. Donnie Reeves of Marietta, GA, purchased the remains in 1994. He restored the original body utilizing a new fiberglass front end & doors. Don consulted with Arnie Beswick to ensure the TT was as correct as possible. The car even made a couple of passes at a nostalgia show in the mid-90s. The TT was purchased by Mr. Don Snyder Jr. of New Springfield, OH, in 2001 and currently resides in his extensive lightweight & drag car collection (see racer link). | We need to confirm best times.

Notes: Gene Snow's "Rambunctious" 1965 Dart is one the greatest race cars of all time. Snow won two US Nationals in a row with the car in 1966 and 1967. The Dart was built from a stock Dodge. Over the course of a couple of years, T-Bar Chassis jcompletely rebuilt the car. The Dart was steel, save for the fiberglass front end. All unneeded weight was cut off and the interior was replaced with aluminum. The Dart had windows to begin with, but they were taken out later. When T-Bar rebuilt the car, they also lengthened the chassis. The Dart was a good racer before the rebuild and was great afterward. Snow won the two races at Indy and countless match races all over the country. The Dart was well known for leaving with the wheels up, but going straight. Gene won Indy 1966 running C/Fuel Dragster with a 9.04. Set both ends of the C/FD record at Austin TX in July 66 at 9.33/153.58.

Notes: Roger Lindamood raced funny cars from the very beginning. He won Super Stock at the US Nationals at Indy, but he went the funny car route like other racers. Roger's Charger relied on the same chassis from '67 to '68 but obviously went from injectors to blowers. I know that Lindamood experimented with having the injector hat reversed. It was a failed experiment in air turbulence, I guess. Low 8s and high 7s were the norm. By 1968, Lindamood was racing the beautiful full-size "Color Me Gone" 1968 Charger. Logghe Stamping Company built the Charger, and Al Bergler did the tin for the massive body. The paint featured layers of pearl white and a wild rainbow paint scheme on top. A 426 Chrysler Hemi backed by a TorqueFlite transmission powered the behemoth. Lindamood ran a 7.73 at 193.12 with the full-size Charger in 1968. He raced at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. (Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke and James Ibusuki) | Lindamood started the season at the New Year's Day race at Irwindale, where he qualified on the bump for the 16-car field with an 8.52, but he lost early. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Winternationals Funny Car race, he qualified #6 out of a field of 32 with an 8.20/180.00 and ran a first-round 7.97/180 before losing in the second. He then went to Pomona, where he qualified for Super eliminator(there was no Funny Car class), but he had problems with the car and could not compete. At Carlsbad on February 25 for the South Coast Funny Car Championships, he went all the way to the finals with an 8.34/180 best before fouling against Jim Liberman. He lost to Tom Grove's 7.79 in the first round at the Cecil County Fuel Showdown on May 18, running an 8.10/179.64 in the loss. On July 4, Roger set a Union Grove speed record of 190.46. He was at Gary, Indiana, on July 30 for an eight-car show. He needed only a 11.97 to advance in round one when his competition fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.05/186.26 lost to Don Schumacher's 7.70. Roger was at Norwood, MA, on August 11 for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. It was a 1/8 mile track, and in their first race, Lawton's 5.31/145 beat Lindamood's 5.37/152. Both ran 5.01 in the second race, with the Charger picking up the track speed record with its 155.17 top end that managed to cross the stripe before the Mustang. Roger wrapped up the match by winning the final race with a 5.14/153 that covered Lawton's 5.32/142. On September 1 at Minnesota for their 8-car Funny Car meet, Roger ran a first-round 7.86/193.12 (track speed record) that beat Don Schumacher's (8.19/181.08) Charger. But he fouled away a 7.80/191.88 against Grove (7.72/191.48) in the semis. On September 14, Roger faced off against Pat Minick in a best two out of three match race at Hollywood, Florida. Roger lost the first race with an ill-handling 10.20-83.72 to Minick's shut off 9.81/95. Pat took the match in the second race with an 8.25/177, beating Roger's 8.44/189.46. Lindamood ran a 7.92/191.48 solo in the third race when Minick's "Chi-Town Hustler" broke. Another best of three match was run on September 29 at Windsor Dragway, where Terry Hedrick was in the "Seaton's Shaker" Rat-powered Corvair. Roger had a bad day, losing all three races and only running a best of 8.05/189.46. At the OCIR manufacturer's race, Roger won all three races with a best of 7.96/189.46. Shortly after that, he had a bad day racing at Columbia, South Carolina. The windshield blew out of the car at speed. Because he ran the car with windows, the air pressure caused the body to explode. The front end had also collapsed. Roger was hit by some debris that had struck him in the chest and knocked him unconscious. Other than some cracked ribs, he was ok. He needed a new Charger body for his race commitments. - Ron Howard
