Notes: Sponsored by the Dukes Auto Club, this dual-engine dragster sported some of the craziest headers found on a dragster in the 1950s - a decade in drag racing replete with funny-looking vehicles. John Gunsaulis wrote in his book "Spokane Hot Rodding" that this dragster was built in Dick Morphy's garage, along with Kenny Brinkman, Jim Tipkie, and Lee Sherman. The rear-engine, with Hilborn injectors, came from Tom Wham's hydroplane. The front engine, with factory fuel injection, was removed each weekend from Sherman's '57 Chevy daily driver and plopped into the dragster for racing. After the races, back into Sherman's car, it would go so he could drive to school on Monday. It regularly won top gas eliminator at Deer Park in '59. Photo: Spokane Spokesman-Review, 7/11/59 - MB |

Notes: With the help and support of his parents, he built a B/FD that became competitive in the Northwest. Vern Massie, another Spokane friend, joined the venture as part owner. Its first outing was at their home track, Deer Park, on June 14. They had Butch Miller handle the driving duties on that first outing. It won top eliminator and turned 142.23 mph. Young Kelly drove it thereafter. All of their events in the '59 season were at Deer Park. On July 11, they turned 148.76 mph, which set a new track record in B/FD. The next day they turned 150.75 mph, but because it wasn't during the period for establishing track records, the 148.76 mark stood as the track record. But on July 26, they turned another 150.75 mph, which became the new track record. It appears that 1959 was the only year they competed with the dragster.
