Notes: Gary Nielsen took over management of the new Salt Lake Raceway drag strip, a job that took much of his time. After the strip opened, he got back to driving his dragster. He started out the year running alcohol which netted speeds in the high 160s. On July 3, on alcohol, he turned 167.887 mph. On July 10, they ran on nitro at the new strip and clocked 174.57 mph, making him one of 25 racers in the country to have recorded a speed over 170 mph. Unfortunately, a broken idler pulley sidelined them from backing up their run. After that promising run, their speeds tailed off. On Aug. 13, he ran 153.75 mph; on Sep. 25, he eked out 157 mph.
