Notes: Set a "1320 Record" for class A Hot (aka Fuel) Roadsters with a 151.77 blast at Bakersfield on May 3. Made cover (again) of 5/09/59 Drag News. We need to find out if Burkhart-Burns ran under the well-known Reath Automotive "banner" other than in 1959.; He set a new but short-lived Drag News 1320 record at Bakersfield on May 3. At Riverside, on May 17, he won what Drag News mistakenly called the A Fuel Coupe-Sedan class with 10.44 at 144.00 mph. He really ran in what was then called the A Hot Roadster class, meaning he ran on fuel. Photo: "Show us your favorite Model A roadsters," p. 7, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB

Notes: As the different strips in Southern California employed different classification systems, it's hard to equate today's classes with the classes in the 1950s. But essentially, this venerable roadster was a D class roadster, running either on gas or fuel. At some meets, they even changed their flathead motor to accept both gas and fuel to take class wins on both. As George Burkhart was a big guy, 6'10" at over 300 pounds, Mike Burns did all the driving. They restricted all their racing to San Fernando, Santa Ana, or Saugus in 1959. Some additional people joined the team at a few meets. For instance, at a few events in September, the Morris Brothers joined with them for the meet at Saugus on Sep. 1, where they won the D/FR class with 129 mph and took the E/Roadster Gas Flathead class at the same race with 114.50 mph. All in all, it must have been a busy day. At San Fernando on Sep. 2, the Morris Bros. were partners when they won the fuel roadster class with 126.76 mph. The Morris Bros. were in on the action at San Fernando on Sep. 9 when they took a V class Fuel Roadster win with 120.93 mph. On Sep. 29 at Saugus, Burkhart ran in E Roadster Comp Gas with Burvis and Okomura for a win at 114.94 mph. It's unclear if that was the same car because the news reports only give Burkhart's name, linked with a Merc motor in a roadster. At Saugus on Sep. 22, Burns turned 124.89 mph on fuel but blew the transmission. They fixed the tranny and switched to gas to finish the day's race, winning the F Roadster Comp Gas class with 114.46 mph. On Nov. 11 at San Fernando, they took top eliminator, running their new 295 c.i. motor after switching out their old 259 Merc flathead. They also set a new track record with the new motor at 130.81 mph. Their best gas time in the season was 116.36 mph which they ran at Saugus on Aug. 25.
