Notes: Frank's first event this year was Indy, where he was the seventh alternate at 6.57/227.84. At the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo, Texas, Frank ran well. He started that race by qualifying #2 for the West at 6.67 and then ran 7.10/142.63 in round one when Joe Jacono did not show. In round two, Al Bergler broke against him, and Frank claimed a 6.72/207.85 victory. He improved to 6.42/225.56 in the semis to beat Shirl Greer's 6.64. He became the 1973 NHRA World Champion by running a 6.39/224.43 to beat Bobby Rowe's 6.38/228.42 on a holeshot. Frank qualified #7 at the Ontario SUpernationals at 6.441/223.32. He beat Billy Meyer in round one at 6.48/219.51 when Meyer lost fire. In round two, his otherwise excellent 6.37/224.43 lost to Dale Emery's killer 6.28/229.59. Where did Frank run 6.29/228.42? Notes: Tom was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals with his new Satellite. Seventy-five cars were attempting to qualify, and Hoover's 7.02 best was good for the fourth alternate. There were still plenty of cars at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where 58 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. The "Showtime" car must have stood out as it was awarded the "Best Appearing car." The rain-delayed event had to be run in poor track conditions. Still, Tom was able to slip and slide to 7.35 to qualify #2. Stan Shiroma fouled against him in the first round, and Hoover advanced with a 7.78. In the second round, his 7.59/207 lost to the race's eventual winner Don Schumacher who beat him with a 7.43/210. All was not lost, though, as the Satellite was awarded the race's "Best Appearing Car." Tom then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified in the #13 spot and then beat Jake Johnston driving Tom McEwen's Duster in round one. In the second round, a 7.15 took out John Collins driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car, and a 7.17 in the semifinals beat Dave Uyehara's 7.41 in Larry Huff's car. This put him into the final against Ed McCulloch. Tom proved up to the task by running 7.14/218.44 for the victory over Ed's 7.57/196. The following week (March 11), he qualified #1 at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.56/215.30. Another 6.56 in the first round, lost to Don Prudhomme's Low ET setting 6.45. He was runner-up to Schumacher at Tulsa for the AHRA Grand American on April 11. He faced Ron Colson driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for a best of three match race at Minnesota, but it wasn't Tom's day as he lost three straight. Hoover qualified #2 at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American race. Unfortunately, the engine came up ailing in the first round, and his 8.01 lost to Dale Emery in the "Jeg's" Camaro. He also qualified well at the AHRA Springnationals at Century 21 Raceway in Denver. His 6.73 qualified #3, but he lost to Gene Snow in the first round. Tom won the fourth NHRA Division 5 race in Minnesota. He ran 7.22 in the first round over Doc Halladay's 7.31 and took it easy in the semifinals when John Dekker fouled against him. In the final, he got the victory with a 7.14/206.42 over Art Ward. First Showtime. Back with Pa Hoover. Former Whipple and Mr. Ed Satellite.
