Notes: Paul was the first alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.31/190.35. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 7.31/188.95. In the opening round, his 7.32/188.99 lost to Scott Geoffrion's 7.27/190. At Houston, for the NHRA Supernationals, his 7.237/190.67 qualified #13. An off-pace 7.55/179.35 in the first round lost to Bob Glidden's 7.19/192. He did not compete at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but he did make the trip to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 7.28/190.55 qualified #13, but Glidden stopped him again in the first round. His 7.34/187.81 fell to Bob's 7.24/192. He failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 7.35/188.60 failed to better the 7.30 "bump." He qualified #12 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 7.30/189.35. He pushed the tree too hard in the first round and fouled, shutting down to 9.38/108.19 in a loss to Larry Morgan's 7.30/191. Columbus was his next stop for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 7.37/187.77 best failed to qualify. Paul qualified #12 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.29/190.19. He cut a good light in the first round, and his 7.28/190.51 beat Mark Pawuk's 7.27/189. He fell off to a 7.44/179.89 in round two and lost to Bob Glidden's 7.25/191. He had the only Grand Prix in the field at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 7.70/178.35 got him the #12 spot in the field. Another 7.70 at 173.94 lost to Larry Morgan's 7.64/179 in the first round. The following week (August 2), he was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 7.24/190.35 qualified #10. In round one, his 7.30/181.96 was good enough to defeat John Nobile's 7.47/182. But in round two, Scott Geoffrion's 7.31/189 beat his 7.43/175.67. At Seattle, he qualified #9 for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 7.23/190.07. Paul ran his best ET at Seattle this year at 7.232, and his best speed was on a 7.25/190.79 DNQ effort at the World Finals. |

Notes: Photo from Sanair 90. Gordie debuted a new Jerry Haas-built Beretta at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Unfortunately, new car blues keep him from qualifying as his best of 9.58/98.43 was far from making the show. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he improved to a 7.37/188.12 best that still failed to make the field (second alternate). Rivera failed to qualify at Houston as well for the NHRA Supernationals. There, he was the fourth alternate with a 7.30/189.91. He did not attend the NHRA Gatornationals or the Winston Invitational at Rockingham, but he was back on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Once again, he failed to make the field, running a best of 7.33/188.75. Gordie did make the show at NHRA's sixth race of the season, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. His 7.30/189.91 qualified #11, but a first-round 7.34/189.63 lost to Jim Yates' 7.29/189. He was outside looking in at the NHRA Springnationals. His 7.37/188.36 failed to qualify. In Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #15 with a 7.30/190.83. He got his first win light of the season when his 7.31/190.67 beat Don Beverley's quicker 7.24/193 in the first round. He lost to Yates' slight holeshot in round two, 7.33/189 to his 7.32/190.15. |

Notes: Sox's first time out in the new Comet was at the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified last with a 7.61/182 in the sixteen-car field. In advanced past the first-round when low qualifier Mike Ashley broke. In round two, a 7.14/195 beat Brian Gahm, but he lost in the semifinals. At the USSC event at Englishtown on April 22, Sox qualified #2 with a 7.05 at 205 to become the first "doorslammer" Ford to run 200. He made it into the final but lost to Bill Kuhlmann. He qualified #10 with a 7.17/194.46 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but he failed to reach the finals. At the IHRA Gateway Nationals, Sox set an IHRA Pro Modified record of 7.006 in qualifying #1. The speed of the run was 199.55. In the first round, he beat Dennis Fitts with a 7.07/198.32. A 7.09/197.88 beat Scotty Cannon in round two, and a 7.11/197.57 beat Tim McAmis in the semifinals. He went on to win with a 7.05/198.99 over Mike Ashley, who fouled in the final. The Pro Modified racers were in NHRA territory when they showed up at Atlanta for a sixteen-car show. Sox qualified #2 with a 7.03/200.22 and lasted until the semifinals, where he slept on the line, and his 7.05/199.72 lost to Michael Martin's 7.14/195. Ronnie was back in Atlanta in August for the Ford Funday event. He had a match race against Norm Wizner that Sox won with a best of 7.06/200.51. He made another final at Darlington for the US Open. His best run there came in round two when he beat Fred Hahn with a 6.91/203.02. In the final, the car went into a slight wheelstand, and Sox had to back off, so his 7.31/203 finished runner-up to Tim McAmis. Ronnie had one of the eight cars to run the IHRA Summit Shootout at Bristol on the same weekend as the IHRA Fallnationals. It was a pretty good weekend for Sox. He beat Al Billes in the opening round with a 7.00/202.52, and a semifinal 6.98/203.19 beat McAmis. He went up against Blake Wiggins in the final, and unfortunately, the Comet broke, giving Wiggins an uncontested victory. The next day he ended the IHRA season by winning the Fallnationals. He qualified #5 with a 6.98/203.19 and ran 7.00/200 over Bob Losordo in the first round. He soloed with a 7.00/201.48 when Blake Wiggins couldn't make the call after crashing in round one. Ronnie showed 'em he could still drive in the semifinals by drilling Scotty Cannon's 6.93 with a 7.02. In the final, he met Ashley again, and once again, Mike fouled to give Sox another victory. By the end of the year, the Comet had run a best speed of 209.32 and at the season-ending USSC race at Englishtown ran a career-best (to this point) of 6.87, backed up with a 6.88. |
