Notes: Sport's first 300 mph run to become the first member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club. Runner up to Eddie Hill in the final of the 1992 Gatornationals. Ran 4.823 low qualifier at the Gators. Set 4.846 national record at 92 Supernationals. Chiefs 4.792 was low qualifier. Low qualifier at Houston at 4.859 and Keystones at 4.879. Also 293.63 and 296.93 at 92 Houston, and 295.66 at 92 Maple Grove. | Kenny started his '92 season at the NHRA Winternationals, qualifying #11 with a 5.04/285.98. A first-round 5.91/281.86 beat Gene Snow and a 5.01/280.54 beat Jack Ostrander in round two. In the semifinal, his 4.98/282.39 beat a quicker and faster Joe Amato at 4.95/283. In the final, a 4.96/281.07 beat Jim Head's 4.98/279. At the next race, the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Kenny just made the show, qualifying #15 with a 5.15. A first-round 5.07/276.24 lost to Pat Austin's 4.99/287. As mentioned above, he set a 4.84 NHRA record at the NHRA Supernationals. He qualified #8 with a 4.94 and made it into the final against Amato. Amato won with a 4.91/292 to Bernstein's troubled 7.19/117.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a 4.82 at the sport's first 300 mph run, a 301.70. He backed it up for a new NHRA speed record. In the actual race, he ran a first-round 4.88/298.30 over Dannielle Deporter and a second round 4.87/299.30 over Tommy Johnson Jr. In the semifinal, he ran a wheelstanding 5.57/263.46 over a tire smoking Mike Brotherton. In the final, Eddie Hill's 4.84/290 beat Kenny's shutting off 9.43/86.40. At the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham in April, Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.01/288.64 (Top Speed), but he lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.46 in the first round, with an off pace 5.78. The next NHRA stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Kenny qualified #1 with a track record 4.85/296.15. He beat Austin's 5.00/284 in the first round, with a 4.93/298.50 (Top Speed), in round two his 5.01/294.69 lost to McCulloch's 4.98/285. The sixth race of the NHRA schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 4.98/293.82 qualified second. He lucked out in the first round, when both he and Johnson Jr. smoked the tires. Bernstein's 5.54/257.43 came out on top. In round, he got some revenge on McCulloch who had stopped him at the last two events by running a 4.96/295.85 (Top Speed) over Ed's 5.11/281. In the semifinals, Brotherton's 5.00/288 beat a tire smoking Bernstein. Things didn't go to well for the Budweiser Team at the Springnationals. First they qualified way down in the #7 spot with a 5.05/287.72. Then in the first round, another 5.05 at 289.76 lost to Austin's 4.96/289. They more than made up for it by winning the next NHRA race, the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.01/284.99. A first-round 5.07/288.64 beat Robert Reehl and in the second round, a 5.06/287.90 advanced when McCulloch broke. In the semifinals, he faced Al Segrini in Billy Lynch's car and once again his competition broke and he advanced with a 4.98/290.88. In the final he was up against Don Prudhomme. His 5.03/292.58 (Top Speed) beat the "Snake's" close 5.06/271. The next race was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Kenny was still the only driver that had ran 300 mph and he did it again here when he ran 4.88/300.40 to qualify #2 behind McCulloch. Unfortunately, in the first round, Dale Armstrong dialed too much power into it and Kenny smoked the tires and lost to Ostrander. Things went much better at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Once again Kenny qualified #2 behind McCulloch with a 4.93/284.53. He ran a 5.11/276.32 over Junior Kaiser's 5.38/247 in the first round, only a 12.26/75.34 was needed to advance past round two after Hill couldn't return after blowing a motor in his first-round race. In the semifinals, Bernstein's 5.15/275.56 beat Doug Herbert's 5.32/258. In the final he met up with McCulloch. What promised to be a good race was ruined when Ed smoked his tires and Kenny ran 5.16/268.57 for his third win of the year. The NHRA tour then went to Sonoma for the California Nationals. Kenny qualified #8 with a 5.01/290.41. A first-round 5.07/286.80 lost to Mike Brotherton's 5.00/282. |

Notes: Garlits raced at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he ended up as the first alternate with a 6.13 best. The following week, he was at Fremont's East-West meet, where he ran a best of three match race against Tommy Ivo's jet. Don won the first race with a 6.10/240.00. In the second race, he lost when the car tossed a blower belt. He came back to win the third race to win the match. Shortly after that (February 18), he was at Beeline Dragway for the NHRA Division Seven opener. He beat Shirley Muldowney there, but he lost to Marvin Graham. A big win followed at the Bakersfield March Meet. This was the first year the race was reduced to sixteen cars. His 5.86 qualified #1, and in round one, a 5.90/232.55 beat Dave Uyehara's 5.90/245. In round two, Hank Johnson's 6.27/227 fell to Garlits' 5.95/226.13. Gary Ormsby fouled against him in the semi-final, and Don advanced with a 5.87/234.98. He stayed strong in the final, where his 5.88/240.00 won over Rick Ramsey's 6.08/218. Gainesville was not a race "Big Daddy" would like to remember. He "only" qualified #15 at 6.13/239.36. Jeg Coughlin broke against him in the first round, and Don ran 6.65/223.88. In the second round, he smoked the tires, and his 6.56/209.79 lost to Rob Bruins' 6.07/240. Another win came his way on March 18 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.99 qualified #4. He beat Marvin Schwartz in the opening round with a 6.03 and then ran 6.07 in the semi-final over Clayton Harris' 6.43. He faced Connie Kalitta in the final, and Don's 6.20/232.53 won over Kalitta's 6.49/199. He then opened the month of April by winning the NHRA Division Two opener held at DeSoto. Only seven cars showed, and he was the slowest in qualifying. He picked up to 6.14/230.76 in the first round to defeat Schwartz's 6.47/224, and he set low E.T. in the semi-final with a 6.01/233.16 that beat Bobby Hilton's 6.37/198. He went up against low qualifier Muldowney in the final, and his 6.06/244.56 barely covered her 6.07/241. His next win came at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta, where he beat Coughlin in the final. He was absent from the races until he reached Maple Grove in mid-May for the Dutch Classic. This was another eight-car show, and his 6.05/236.84 (Top Speed) qualified #1. The race was rain-delayed, and some cars did not return, so Garlits got a solo in the first round and ran low E.T. at 5.99/236.22. In the semi-final, he dropped Howard Haight with a 6.03/233.76. That set up a final-round meeting with Bobby Hilton. Garlits' 6.18/231.95 won when Hilton had to shut off on the line with a fuel leak. He was in St. Louis early in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He also won there; he always seemed to win at St. Louis. The win didn't come easy. His 6.16 qualified second to Graham's 6.14. He beat Jack Revelle in the first round and Bill Selley in the semi-final. He faced the always tough Frank Bradley in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Garlits' 6.23 top Bradley's 6.24. The following week he towed to Columbus and won the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 at 6.00/235.60. A 6.09/238.72 took care of Bill Pryor's ailing 6.37/223. Kalitta's 6.08/239 in the second round lost to his 6.01/241.58. In the semi-final, Don's 6.04/239.36 beat Johnny Abbott's tire-shaking 6.12/239. This time he faced Richard Tharp driving the "Candies and Hughes" car in the final. Tharp was hungry as it was his first NHRA National event final since the '77 U.S. Nationals. But Richard's off-pace 6.51/183 was no match for Garlits' 6.11/236.84. Don also ran 246.57 at the NHRA Summernationals in July and at the Indy U.S. Nationals in September. The 5.78/252.70 set the AHRA World Record. | 5.97 246 NHRA Englishtown NJ 7/79 |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. | Herbert was at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January. Crew Chief Jim Brissette was attempting to set up his clutch combination in Doug's car. The team made five passes, and all were tire-smokers, with the best being an 8.68/94.25. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, the team's first run in qualifying was 5.06. That was followed by losing a blower on the next run, and a blown head gasket on the third attempt slowed Herbert to 5.21. That may have been some good luck as the car in the other lane (Jimmy Nix) suffered a blow-over but was ahead of him on the track. Finally, a 4.97/292.20 qualified #7 for the show. An even better 4.88/292.20 in the first round, beat Ed McCulloch. The 4.880 was the quickest pass in history, surpassing Gary Ormsby's 4.881 for 16 months previous. He had a push rod break in round two and slowed to a 9.12/77.47 that lost to Joe Amato's 7.82/125. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 4.99. A first-round 5.10/275.73 beat Bobby Baldwin, and in round two, a 5.01/269.13 beat Amato. He got into the final by stopping Gene Snow in the semifinals with a 5.17/263.31, but facing off against Pat Austin in the final, he limped to a 16.61/77.23 runner-up finish due to a broken throttle cable to Austin's 5.06/286. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he qualified #13 with a 5.01/284.81. In the first round, his 5.02/279.93 lost to Cory McClenathan's 4.92/291. His next event was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Doug set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.26/272.80. In round one of the eight-car show, he beat a tire-smoking Wayne Bailey with a 5.35/271.16. In the semifinals, he ran another 5.35 at 268.41 to advance when Gene Snow broke. But in the final, Doug had problems and slowed to a 6.30/179.92 that lost to John Carey's 5.63/239. The following week (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Doug qualified #7 with a 4.94/283.73. In the first round, Herbert ran a career-best (to this point) 4.87 at 289, but he wasted it with a red light losing to Pat Austin, who had broken on the line. The next event was NHRA's Winston Invitational at Rockingham. It was only an eight-car field, and qualifying was tough. Doug got in on the "bump" spot with a 5.07/282.75. He improved to a 5.04/279.76 in the first round, to stop Eddie Hill's 5.11/286, and he ran even quicker in the semifinals with a 5.02/279.34, but it wasn't quick enough as he lost to Amato's 4.98/285. Race number five of NHRA's regular season was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 4.98/282.22 qualified Doug #6 for the show. In round one, he beat Tommy Johnson Jr's 5.11/283 with a 4.92/283.55. But in round two, Cory McClenathan pulled a slight holeshot, and his 4.99/290 beat Herbert's quicker 4.97/285.44. He grabbed a big win at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. A 5.25/277.34 qualified #1 in the eight-car field, and in round one, he improved to 5.16/275.81 to beat Mike Smith. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 5.03 (track record) at 283.64 thrashing of Jack Ostrander. In the final, he faced Kim LaHaie. Despite her running a great 5.16/270, Doug got the victory with another 5.03 at 283.55. It was back to NHRA for the Mid-South Nationals, where he qualified #9 for the show with a 5.06/287.17. But in round one, a 4.96/284 by Don Prudhomme beat his 5.02/289.66. Mid-June found Doug at the NHRA Springnationals, where he ran 5.03/283.55 to qualify #6. Once again, he lost early; this time, Connie Kalitta's 4.98/279 beat his 5.02/283.82 in the first round. Two first-round losses in a round were not to Herbert's liking, and he followed it up by going to Canada for the IHRA Summernationals. A 5.05 (Low ET) at 281.95 qualified #1, and he made his way to the final by running 5.15/283.28 (Top Speed) over Lori Johns' quicker 5.10/272 and 5.08/281.69 in the semifinals to beat a tire-smoking, Robert Reehl. In the final, he faced Mike Smith, and both had traction issues with Smith's 5.89/261 getting the victory over Doug's 6.10/246.50. While still in Canada, he went to Sanair the following week (June 28) for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.09/284.62, but he was not a happy camper as in the first round, he lost to Al Segrini in Billy Lynch's car. That made it three first-round losses in the last three NHRA events. He grabbed another IHRA win at the Empire Nationals on July 5. A 5.19/281.25 (Top Speed) qualified #1. He then ran 5.20/275.73 to beat Smith, and in the semifinals, his 5.21/279.06 took out Kim LaHaie. In the final, he faced Hill's Pennzoil dragster. Doug took the win with a Low ET blast of 5.15 at 279.67 over Eddie's 5.23/269. |

Notes: Former M.C. Hammer "Hammertime" entry. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Curt Swartz photo from Bristol, TN, 1992. | Qualified on the bump at the 92 Houston Slick 50 race at 5.070. Kim was fourth alternate at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.12/273.14 best. She qualified on the "bump" at the Arizona Nationals with a 5.16. Eddie Hill beat her in the first round, with a 5.11/273 to her 5.17/272.06. As mentioned, she qualified to the "bump" for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with her 5.07/275.73. Kim improved slightly, to 5.06/268.17 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Mike Brotherton's 4.89/287. NHRA's next stop was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. A 5.01/277.94 qualified #14 and in the first round, she ran her first "4," a 4.96/274.47 that beat Don Prudhomme's close 4.97/285. In round two, Kim's quick-leaving 5.01/278.46 nipped Scott Kalitta's 5.00/274. Her run came to an end in the semifinals when she lost a motor just off the line against Hill. At the NHRA Southern Nationals, she was the first alternate with a best of 5.10/270.63. |

Notes: AKA Satch Nottle. Won Division 1 1973. | There were better-known drivers in Div. #1, but Satch paid his dues by driving some "shaky" cars. When Satch got his golden opportunity to drive for Fred Forkner, he took full advantage of it by beating the "name" drivers and winning the 1973 Div #1 Top Fuel Championship. AKA Quarter Horse. Rear engine dragster, Forkner Chassis, 426 Hemi w/Lenco. Forkner and Nottle split up after the season. - Bill Warburton, 4/15 6.53 at unknown location. |

Notes: Jack was in New York in the first week of July for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 5.44/263.31 qualified #7, and he improved to 5.27/276.49 in the opening round to beat alternate Steve Litton's 5.52/254. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and could not return for his semi-final race against Eddie Hill. The following week he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.09/283.01 qualified #15, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 5.04 at 274.80 in the first round to beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein. The car broke a rear end in round two, and he had to watch Cory McClenathan solo into the semi-final at 5.01/281. Near the end of the month, he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.38/267.61. Ed McCulloch's 5.05/271 in the first round sent his 6.00/164.47 home early. Shortly after that, he was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.08/280.63 qualified #13, but McCulloch dropped him in the first round again. He improved on his best at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, where a 5.03/280.81 qualified #12. Jack qualified on the bump at the 1992 US Nats at 5.066. Jim Hawkins' DragStats confirm ET and speed. He hit bests of 4.904 at Ennis Fall and 288.00 at the World Finals. Photo from Bristol, TN, 1992. |

Notes: Gene started the season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. He was experimenting with a two-stage clutch. In the '88 season, he ran as many as six-stage clutches to get the AFT high gear system to work. His luck wasn't much better at the second NHRA race of the year, the Supernationals, where a best of 5.14 was good for the second alternate. Darlington was costly for the "Snowman." He used up three engines throughout the weekend due to a fuel starvation issue. He was there for the IHRA Winternationals, where he set Low ET while qualifying #1 with a 5.18/252.80. Unfortunately, he blew his third engine on the line in the first round. He went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. During Thursday's first qualifying round, he blew the engine so violently that it blew both cylinder heads off the block, and the flying parts took a piece out of the frame. Gene just made the field with a 5.23 (#16), but he lost another motor in the first round, against Eddie Hill. He was runner-up to Connie Kalitta at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.52/256.49 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Snow set Low ET in the first round, where his 5.16/265.94 beat low qualifier Jim Head's 5.24/271. He beat Richard Holcomb in the semifinals before his 5.35/246.68 lost to Kalitta's 5.19/276 in the final. In April, things started to go better when he ran a 5.14/269.54 to qualify #5 in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. However, he did still lose in the first round, to Frank Hawley. Another first-round loss came at the next NHRA event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, where a 5.13/255.02 qualified #8, but he spun the tires and lost to Pat Dakin. It wasn't until May 21 that Gene finally got a win light, and it happened at the IHRA Springnationals, where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.11. He beat Richard Holcomb's 5.28/258 in the opening round with a 5.21/243.94, and in the semifinals, he met Dakin, and once again, he smoked the tires and lost. The following week (May 28), he was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.25/274.13. Gene beat Joe Amato in the first round, and then ran a 5.30/244 to get around a tire-smoking Kalitta. It was Dick LaHaie's turn to smoke the tires against him in the semifinals, and Snow's 5.16/274 got him into the final. In the final, Gene ran Hawley, and a 5.16/268.41 gave Gene his first win of the year. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a strong 5.03/287.53. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, before smoking his tires against Hank Endres. The NHRA tour headed to Canada for the Grandnationals, where Gene used a 5.30/273.39 to qualify #9. In the first round, an off-pace 5.75/185.26 lost to low qualifier Frank Bradley. He scored another win on July 2 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #3, and a first-round 5.30/261.32 beat Karamesines. In the semifinal, a 5.31/266.65 beat Dakin. In the final, he met a strong running Dennis Forcelle and Gene's 5.25/275.86 beat Forcelle's close 5.29/273. It was back to the NHRA fold the following week (July 9) for the Summernationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.13/260.56. He again beat Karamesines in the first round, before he smoked the tires and lost to Darrell Gwynn in the second round. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Snow set a track record 5.20 at 253.87 in qualifying #1. He beat Frank Cook in the first round, but again smoked the tires to a second-round loss to Lori Johns. A 5.09/275.98 qualified #4 at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals on July 30. Unfortunately, he crashed during qualifying and broke his collarbone. The car was a total loss. Hard to believe, but he was back in a Top Fueler on August 20 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.18/273.39 and a first-round 5.11/282.92 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Hank Endres. In round two, a 5.15/277.86 beat Forcelle, but in the semifinal, he ran a cylinder dropping 5.60/200 that lost to Amato's 5.16/277. Photo from Columbus 1989. |
