Notes: Ken started his season at the OCIR season opener on January 17. It was an eight-car show with all cars running two rounds and the two lowest ETs advancing to the final. Veney ran 6.76/204.08 to beat Ken Randolph in the first round, but the Vega broke in his second race, and he could not race Sherm Gunn. The following week, he was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. His 6.91/203.16 qualified #2 behind Dale Armstrong's 6.79/206. Ken improved to 6.86/205.47 in round one to stop Jimmy Scott's 7.21/196. A second-round 6.91/206.89 advanced over Mark Niver's broken dragster. A semifinal 6.86/207.85 over Gunn set up a final-round meeting with Armstrong. Dale had the advantage as he had been running 6.7s throughout eliminations. But in the final, he lost a clutch and slowed to 11.57/55.28, while Veney picked up the victory with a 7.43/203.61. Ken kept up the pressure at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.73 (Low ET) at 209.30. An opening round 6.78/209.79 beat Rick Williamson. He stayed consistent with his 6.81/209.30, beating a tire-shaking Brad Anderson in round two. He got Top Speed of the Meet with his semifinal 6.78/210.28 to take out Jeg Coughlin's 6.95/197. He went up against Jerry Darien in the final, and Veney knocked off another 6.78/203.61 to get the victory over Darien's 7.38/191. He passed up racing at the Bakersfield March Meet but was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Armstrong, his toughest competitor, outqualified him there, but his 6.85/210.28 wasn't too far behind Dale's 6.78/204. Ken was out for another victory, and it showed. He dumped Vern Moat's 7.13/200 in the first round with a 6.98/208.81. A second-round 6.97/209.81 beat a tire-smoking Joe Amato, and in the semifinals, his tire-shaking 7.27/208.33 luckily advanced over Coughlin's troubled 9.36/83. He faced Bill Wallace in the final, and Bill's off-pace 7.69/148 lost to Veney's 7.15/211.26. His next stop was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. There, he actually got beat! His 7.26 in the semifinals lost to Wilfred Boutilier's 7.05. Ken also won the Cajun Nationals and the Springnationals, running 209.30 and defeating Kevin Siebert in the final with a 6.94/206. He qualified #4 at Indy (need times). In round one, he beat Jeff Rapp, 6.79/206.42 to 6.92/197. Ken ran 6.83/206.89 in round two as Wilfred Boutilier got crossed up and shut off. Round three saw Ken run 6.85/205.94 to defeat Chase Knight, who fouled. However, Ken fell off to a 6.92/202.70 in the semis, and that was enough to allow eventual winner Dave Settles to sneak by at 6.76/200. Beautiful race car. |

Notes: Ron failed to qualify at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, but he did much better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 6.05/242.58 qualified #13. He beat John Wiebe in the first round, but it was a costly win as he lost an engine and had a fireball and was unable to return for round two. DNQ at Columbus (no times given) and Indy (6.248/230.17) for the 41th spot. Ran 6.15 at Martin, MI. |

Notes: Pat Dakin was a Donovan supporter. He hung with the engine through the good times and the bad. After going through a rough couple of years in '76 and '77. The Donovan came back to life in '78 thanks to new heads and intake from Donovan Engineering. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, the top three qualifiers were all running Donovan motors. Dakin's 5.926/243.90 got him the #3 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires against Rob Bruins in the opening round, and his 11.49 lost to Rob's 6.07. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Ran the AHRA tour and match races and finished second in the championship to Shirley. This car was retired at the end of 81. In 84, it was un-retired and repainted to run at the 1984 Indy Nationals and won. This is Don's famous Indy come-back car. |

Notes: Shirley started her '77 season at Irwindale for a best of three match race against James Warren. She won all three races and reset both ends of the track record to 5.86/243.24. She did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, but she was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where she set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.85/248.61. Unfortunately, Muldowney had a distributor clamp come loose in the first round, and it retarded the timing, forcing her to shut down against Rance McDaniel. Her next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Once again, she had problems and in round two a broken magneto cap put her out of the running against Don Garlits. Shirley's early-season woes continued at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.00 qualified #2, but she fouled against Clayton Harris. in the opening round. Things took a turn for the better in April. She won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis, and on May 5, Shirley went to OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race and won that too. She also set Top Speed of the meet at 253.52. Her next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was only an eight-car show, and she qualified #2. But in round one, she smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.85 in a loss to Marvin Graham. Everything went Muldowney's way at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. She set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.99/242.58. An opening round 6.12/234.37 beat Frank Bradley's 6.46/203. Jeg Coughlin crossed the centerline in round two, and she advanced with a 6.14/226.70. Garlits blew his engine in the semifinals trying to catch Shirley's 6.07/238.72. EnglishmanClive Skilton was her competition in the final and he was tough as he won his semifinal race with a 6.08. But Shirley ran a 6.11/236.22 to get the victory over Skilton's close 6.15/228. This seemed to be the turning point in her season, as the lady was tough to beat from then on. She won the third NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. Things didn't start out so well when she fouled away a 6.16 in the first round, but Coughlin crossed the centerline and the first or worse rule held up and she was reinstated. Shirley set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.04/240.64 over Pat Dakin. She then faced Gary Beck in the final, and his 6.26/213 was no match for her 6.06/240.64 (again). The trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals was eventful as her race car transporter caught fire. It had to be towed in. Once there, her performance was great. She ran 5.78 and 5.77/243.90 in qualifying. The 5.77 qualified #1 and was Low ET of the meet. Once again, she battled her way to the final. A first-round 6.11 got around a tire-smoking Skilton, and in round two, a 6.05/243 beat Dakin's 6.15. Her slowest run of the weekend, a 6.25/216 advanced in the semifinals when Richard Tharp got out of shape in the "Candies and Hughes" car. This put her into the final against Jeb Allen who always ran good at E-town. Not this time as his car broke, and Shirley picked up another victory with a 6.02/234.37. The following week (July 17), she won the PDA Championships at Seattle with a 6.12/241 (Top Speed). The second PDA race was held at Fremont and Shirley set a track record 5.82 at 240.64 (Top Speed) in qualifying #1. She failed to reach the finals, but she ran well. Muldowney made it three NHRA Nation event wins in a row when she won the Grandnationals in Canada. Once again, she set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.93/240.00. She then ran 6.04 and 6.10 to beat Allen and Grant Stoms to reach the final. There she faced Dakin and he had problems and shut down to 7.14/137 while she motored to 5.95/234 for the win. Shirley was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. a week later. Of course, her 5.83/227.84 qualified #1, and again she worked her way to the final. A first-round 5.88/244.56 beat Ron Correnti, and a 5.93 took out Dick Rosberg in round two. Shirley was "up" for her semifinal race with Garlits, and her 5.81/246.57 (Low ET and Top Speed) put the "Old Man's" 5.94/242 on the trailer. She was expected to win in the final against John Abbott, who had only run a 6.28 best during eliminations, but he grabbed a holeshot off the line, and his 6.10/231 held on to beat her 6.03/233.75. Another win came at the final NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend on August 21. She was the only five-second qualifier with a 5.92/243.70, and during eliminations, she set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.91/245.90. Shirley soloed in the final over a Larry Brown who had crashed in his semifinal win, but she still ran a strong 5.98/226.13. After running so well, the one race that had to bother her at the end of the year was the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. There were 60 cars attempting to qualify for the 32 car field and Muldowney qualified #2 with a 5.88. That was good, but in round one, against Dick LaHaie, her transmission wouldn't shift out of low gear, and her 6.36/161 lost to LaHaie's 6.19/221. That was bad, packing up after round one. More problems came at the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. Her 5.93 qualified #5 and a 6.17/229.59 beat Rob Bruins' 6.30/225 in round one, but in round two, she shut off on the line with no oil pressure, giving McDaniel a solo into the semifinal. | I saw this world record speed run at OCIR on May 5, 1977. Shirley became the second Top Fuel driver to top 250 mph on the 253.52 and became the second entry into the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Also 5.78/252.10 at AHRA Winters at Beeline, AZ. Also, 5.77 at the 77 NHRA Summernationals, which Shirley won. - BP |

Notes: By '76, the Donovan engine was not the motor of choice for Top Fuel dragsters. But there were some strong holdouts, including this team. Their season started with the AHRA Winternationals held in Tucson. Bill qualified #12, but in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.48 lost to Jim Plummer's 6.37. The next stop was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. There, his 6.22/223.88 qualified #15. Unfortunately, the motor was damaged on that pass, and Bill could not run in eliminations. The first alternate, Bruce Hagestad, took his place in the show. Bill was the 11th alternate at Pomona. Times unknown, but no quicker than the 6.75 recorded by the 10th alternate. Bill was the eighth alternate in Gainesville (no times, but not quicker than 6.28). They got closer at Columbus, but their 6.293/222.22 was the first alternate. Bill made the show at Indy, running 6.133/235.60 for the #22 slot. Jeb Allen crossed the center line in round one, sending Bill's 6.261/229.59 on to round two. Frank Bradley ended his day there with a 6.046/197.36 taking out Pryor's troubled 12.41/59.00. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year, but they did win the 1976 Division 3 championship in a repeat. | The team won the 1976 division title as well, in addition to the AHRA Nationals in St. Louis. - Phil Burgess, Dragster Insider, 9/30/08 |

Notes: Dale was the runner-up at Warner Robins WCS 3/76. Dale was at Warner Robins at the end of March for the NHRA Division Two opener. His 6.61/219.50 qualified second to Clayton Harris' 6.50. These two would end up facing each other in the final. Wilch improved to 6.52/221.67 in the first round to beat Jack Revelle, and a better 6.42/223.32 stopped Paul Longenecker's close 6.43/219 in the semi-final. But Harris was unstoppable on this day, and his 6.23/234 in the final easily handled Dale's 6.80/188.28 runner-up effort. Only one Chevy-powered dragster could qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, and that was Wilch's. He ran 6.237/216.34 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, an opening-round 6.446/221.67 lost to Bob Struksnes' 6.21/236. A week later (June 20), he was at Thunder Valley for the NHRA Division 5 race. He qualified for the show but failed to reach the final. Dale also 218.44 at Saginaw, MI, 6/76. He was the UDRA Top Fuel champion for 1976. |

Notes: Runner up at 87 Ennis All-Stars. Also 5.380 at 87 Gatornationals, which was one half of quickest side by side in history with Darrell Gwynn at 5.240. Dan was also half of fastest side by side race in history at the 87 Gators with his 270.43 and Dick LaHaie's 271.00. Best standard NHRA event times were 5.259 Pomona Finals 87 and 271.16 at Gainesville 3/87. | Dan was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.39/269.94 qualified #4. An opening round 5.43/266.90 advanced when opponent Tim Morgan crashed. But in round two, the car failed to fire for his race against Darrell Gwynn. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Pastorini qualified #7 with a 5.42/266.58. He improved to 5.40/271.16 in the first round, to beat Richard Holcomb and in round two, his 5.45/270.43 beat Dick LaHaie’s quicker, but later 5.44/271. Dan made his best run of the weekend in the semifinals, where he ran 5.38/265.64, but it wasn't enough to beat Gwynn’s 5.24/269. The NHRA Winston All-Star race was held in April at the Texas Motorplex. Dan qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.31/267.77. He ran a 5.23/272.39 in the first round, to trailer Connie Kalitta's 5.33/269 and in the semifinals, he stopped Don Garlits with a 5.37/267.85. He faced LaHaie in the final. Dick had run 5.24 twice in eliminations. Rain kept the final from being run until a week and a half later (April 15). In their race, Dan smoked the tires to 6.86/175.16 while Dick got the victory with a 5.37/268. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.58/259.51 qualified #13 and the number proved unlucky as he lost to Garlits in the first round. On May 9, he was at Fremont (Baylands) for a best of three match race against Don Prudhomme. The Funny Car driver was given a 3-tenths handicap. The "Snake" won their first race with a 5.81/237 over Pastorini's 5.72/242. Dan won the second race with a 5.76/240.64 when Don fouled and shut off. In the deciding race, Prudhomme shut off with tire shake and Dan blew an engine, but his 6.65/144.69 rolled across the line first giving him the match race victory. Shortly after that, he was at Tulsa for its Spring race. It was another eight-car show and Dan's 5.85/238.72 qualified #5. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round race with low qualifier Frank Bradley. The two had a good race, but Bradley's 5.69/249 beat Dan's 5.75/250.00. NHRA’s next race was the Cajun Nationals held at Baton Rouge. A 5.56/254.45 qualified #8, but rain held up the event. He and opponent Gene Snow never showed for their first-round race as they both packed up and headed for Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. This was Pastorini's first IHRA event. Dan qualified #2 with a 5.60/257. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.52 at 254 that beat Bob Strauss. He continued to look strong in the semifinals, where his 5.53/258 beat Jerry Marconi. He faced Hank Endres in the final. Things looked good for the "Coors" car, but Dan had a bit of bad luck as the oil pump broke, giving Endres a solo for the title. He enjoyed his first IHRA race enough that the following week (June 7), he went to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. The field was short so he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.53/259.36. But in the semifinals, he once again had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure, giving John Carey a free ride into the final. He then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, he ran 5.65/251.81 to qualify #10. But in the first round, Joe Amato's 5.47/262 beat his 5.79/247.93. |
