Notes: Rick Howard photo of Funny Car Final Round at the 1997 NHRA Pontiac excitement Nats, Columbus. Qualified on the bump (16th) with a 5.56- 249.65. Upset pole-sitter Randy Anderson, Cruz Pedregon (with an improved 5.47), Del Worsham (no-show for semis), and finally Whit Bazemore with a better yet 5.34 at 270.35 to cap off a "storybook" race. Coming off open-heart surgery just two months before Columbus and returning to competition just two weeks before this event. It was his 5th overall NHRA Funny Car title and first since Sonoma 1993. |

Notes: Atlanta held an eight-car show in March. The track was slick as only one car ran a "five" in qualifying. Rick's 7.48/136.15 qualified on the "bump." To show how tough the track was to figure out, Raymond Beadle could not beat his time to qualify. Rick didn't reach the final, but it was one of his first outings of the year. He also qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 6.20 got him the spot, but he lost early in eliminations again. Shortly after that, he stopped off at Englishtown for the K-Mart Springnationals. Johnson had a great day. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.30/229.00 advanced when Bob Seifert broke. The team was all smiles in the semifinals after Rick ran his first "5." A 5.97/244.56 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Roy Harris's 6.43/221. He went up against the always tough Gary Burgin in the final. The two had a great race that saw Rick's 6.25/240.00 come out on top for the victory over Gary's 6.30/234. The team's next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Johnson qualified #4, but he smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Dale Pulde. Rick qualified 10th at the NHRA Springnationals at 6.062/244.56 and upset Don Prudhomme and Dale Pulde before falling to Mark Oswald in the semis. An opening round 6.32/230.17 beat the "Snake," and a 6.19/234.98 beat Pulde's 6.40/229. His 'chute popped out in the semifinal while racing Mark Oswald, and his slow 6.87/128.20 lost to Mark's 6.41/222. A 6.11/233.16 qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. In the first round, he ran 6.12 to stop Frank Hawley's 6.23 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In round two, Kenny Bernstein's 6.14/236 fell to Rick's 6.050/240. He faced Oswald again in the semifinal, and this time the "Custom Body" car broke a rear-end, and Johnson had to watch Mark advance with a 5.95/243. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #15 and lost in the opening round to Hawley. Notes: This was one of the last of a dying breed, the Chevy-powered Funny Car. Dan Geare and Dean LaPole teamed on this "Rat" powered Camaro. I would've loved to hear this thing run because it was the loudest Funny Car out there from all reports. The 120" chassis was built by exhibition Engineering. But the big story about this car and what set it off from the others was the stock-sized 427 Chevy engine. It used two spark plugs for each cylinder and also had a dual ignition system. The rods were by Howards, while the 6.5:1 pistons were Arias. Crankshaft Company supplied the crank. The cam was also from Howards. Scott injectors fed the Larry Bowers-built blower. The car used a B&M prepared automatic. The rear end used 4.56 gears. The Camaro body came from J&E Fiberglass and was narrowed eight inches. Nat Quick did the paint and lettering. The Camaro weighed 1,900 lbs. Dean was at Capitol Raceway on August 21 for the Mr. FC Eliminator race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 7.28/188 lost to Tom McEwen's 7.03/180. Later, he came back out to run a consolation race against Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max." Tharp shut down early in their race, and LaPole ran 7.05/193. Rick Howard photo from 1971. |

Notes: The story I got is: Bruce didn't make the qualified field for the race, came out Sunday for an exhibition run, did a quarter-mile burnout - actually to the finish line - came back and ran his first 5-second run. - Curt Swartz | Not only did Larson run his first 5-second pass of the weekend for the Nitro coupes, but he would have been the pole-sitter by a bunch, according to the screaming announcer over the PA system. Nobody caught the numbers after a loud roar went up after Bruce hit the chutes. Dale Pulde and Don Prudhomme held the top 2 spots at 5.94 and 5.95 respectively. Pulde later set Low ET at 5.86 in a semifinal win over John Force. So, it's anybody's guess what Bruce actually ran that morning. I searched for years to find that time, but it was not to be. We needless to say, the crowd went nuts. - Rick Howard | Just to add one more take to this story, Bruce did fail to qualify for the eight-car field at ADRA's first race, the Grandnationals, at Dragway 42. But the following day, he made a 6.03 pass that was a career-best (to this point). |

John teamed with Steve Plueger on a Dodge Daytona and drove it at the World Finals. Formerly listed a 5.88/249.30 for John in 1984. Where did he run that? Were those 1985 Blue Max times (where he went 5.88 at Brainerd)? We are removing them until we get confirmation. |

Notes: On April 20, he had the only fuel FC that showed up at DeSoto Memorial Raceway for the second NHRA Division Two race. He made a 14.25/53.50 solo to win. At the 1980 AHRA GrandNats, Dragway 42, Don was an alternate for this 8-car show, but rain delays sent many teams home, including Tom McEwen. McEwen qualified 5th and was replaced by Nieves' Charger. He faced No. 1 qualifier Dale Pulde in round one and lost. Rick Howard photo (frame-grabbed from Super 8mm film) from that event. |

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnationals, Columbus. Qualified 10th at 5.28/278.89. Lost to Chuck Etchells in round one. | Early in August, Kenji was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He qualified #14 with a 5.35/270.18, but on another qualifying run, he lost an engine and the car caught fire. He was OK, but the fire damaged the car too badly to run in eliminations. |

Notes: At the second NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater in May, Dick qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.25/230.76 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, advancing Tom Motry. Rosberg attempted to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.29/227.84 failed to make the show. On July 20, the "Fighting Irish" team was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.11 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Raymond Beadle's 6.02 in the "Blue Max." Rosberg beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, and in the semifinals he beat John Pott in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the finals he ran Billy Meyer and both ran 6.12 (Rosberg at 230.17) with Billy getting the win. Dick qualified #3 at the 1980 AHRA GrandNationals, Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio, but redlighted to John Collins in round one. He was at the PHR Championships where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.27/228.42, but his 6.53 in the first round, lost to Tom Hoover's 6.25. He made it into the final at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. There he qualified #2 with a 6.17/241.95 (Top Speed) and then ran 6.19 over Roy Harris' 6.40. A semifinal 6.20/239.17 beat John Speelman's 6.42/224. In the final he faced Gary Burgin and Dick ran his worst pass on the day, a 6.28/239.36 that lost to Burgin's 6.26/237. |

Notes: As a result of a horrific fire at the '94 US Nats, the Research Labs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio conducted tests on fire-Extinguishing with assitance from Firefox Industries. Rick Howard took both photos, one of the car after the fire at Indy and the one for the brochure used by the Air Vehicle Structures Lab at WPAFB. Rick was Senior Safety Specialist during the tests and was required to monitor all tests. Test car was a Ford Probe built by Murf McKinney. |
