Notes: Gary attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he ended up as the first alternate with a best of 5.57/252.03. He was able to qualify #13 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, but he hurt his motor on the 5.52/261.87 pass and could not run eliminations. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he ran 5.34/267.93 to qualify #11. Unfortunately, he had problems against Gordon Mineo in the first round, and shut off to a 7.40/104.28. He did not attend the NHRA Gatornationals or the Winston Invitational at Rockingham, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There a 5.24/274.64 qualified #7. In the first round, an off-pace 5.43/246.03 lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.27/280. He skipped the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis and the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown, but he was back on the NHRA tour at Columbus for the Springnationals where Gary ran 5.36/269.94 to qualify #13. Eventual winner Gordie Bonin's 5.27/282 stopped his 5.46/261.47 in the first round. The ninth NHRA race of the season was the Western Nationals, where Densham ran 5.63/252.45 to qualify #15. He picked up to a 5.47/264.08 in the first round, but he again lost to Bonin at 5.40/280. Rick Howard photo from 1993 NHRA US Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy. DNQ for both Monday eliminations (19th overall with a best of 5.39/268.89) and the Big Bud Shootout.

Notes: Gary ran a career-best(to this point),5.25 at 285.53, to qualify #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the opening round, his 5.22/285.35 lost to Gary Bolger's 5.24/280. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he ended up as the first alternate at 5.49/211.86. He also failed to qualify at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where he was the third alternate at a troubled,6.34/155.87. His problems continued at Gainesville, where the best pass he could make was 9.65/88.36. That fell far short of the 5.38 "bump" for the NHRA Gatornationals. He picked it back up again at Atlanta, where a 5.32/274.84 qualified #10 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He improved to 5.25/266.67 to beat Bolger in the first round, but he lost to K.C.Spurlock in round two. Memphis went really well for him. A new career-best 5.19/283.01 qualified #7. He then worked his way into the final by running 5.21/282.48 over Dean Skuza. In round two, Densham's 5.20/281.07 beat Spurlock, and he ran 5.20/281.51 in the semi-final to defeat Chuck Etchells. He faced Gary Clapshaw in the final. Neither had won an NHRA FC title, so it was a first-time winner no matter who won. The two had a good race, but Densham made his slowest run of the day, a 5.45/276.66, to finish runner-up to Clapshaw's 5.33/285. Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. Qualified 16th at 5.38/273.14. He lost to John Force in round one (photo).

Notes: Gary went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the show with a 5.55/272.47. He lost to Cruz Pedregon in the opening round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.55/221.23 was the second alternate. But he got into the field when #7 qualifier Paul Smith could not race. The first two alternates were not ready, so Densham got in. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Beal. Only sixteen cars showed up to qualify at Gainesville, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Gary ran 5.25/284.36 to take the #14 spot. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 5.21/290.32 lost to Chuck Etchell's 5.18/294. He really stepped up at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where his career-best 5.13/293.63 qualified #4. He beat Dean Skuza in round one, with a 5.20/290.88 but his off-pace 5.38/244.43 in round two lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.12/300. Rick Howard photo from 1996 NHRA US Nats, Indy. Failed to qualify for the main show with a 17th best 5.24/292. Did qualify for Big Bud Shootout and improved to 5.05/301 in round one, but lost to Cruz Pedregon.

Notes: Etchells will always be remembered as the first to run a four-second time in an FC. His '96 season was good, as he was always competitive. Chuck qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.46/287.63. He improved to 5.33/252.17 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to John Force's 5.12/296. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.05/299.60 qualified second to Force's 5.04/301. A 5.12/295.27 in the first round beat Jim Epler, while he got to run a 5.36/290.69 solo in round two when Chuck Beal failed to show. An off-pace 5.41/289.85 still beat Whit Bazemore in the semi-finals, but fellow finalist force ran 5.14 in his semi-final win. The final saw Chuck slow to a 5.75/186.48 in a runner-up finish to John's 5.19/295. He always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '96 was no different. A 5.08/306.22 (Top Speed) qualified #3, and he was able to work his way into the final for the second straight race. He started by running a 5.18/294.50 over Gary Densham's 5.21/290. In round two, his 5.15/295.46 stopped Paul Smith's 5.17/285, and in the semi-final, he took out Del Worsham's 5.32/229 with a 5.07/305.18. Once again, the final would come down to Force vs. Etchells, and the results were the same as Force blasted out a track record 4.9301 for the win over Etchells' 5.23/302.01. NHRA's next race was the Supernationals held at Houston at the end of March. Chuck qualified #6 at 5.14/299.70. But he didn't hang around long in eliminations as Mark Oswald's 5.13/287 in round one beat his 5.20/244.96. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was just an eight-car field. It's good that no points were awarded at this race as Etchells failed to qualify. He came off the truck and ran 5.37, but it all went downhill as tire shake did him in. His next three passes were 5.62, 9.13, and 7.68. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 9th at 5.10/303.23. He defeated Paul Smith in round one with an improved 304.25 before falling to John Force in the quarterfinals. He qualified for Big Bud Shootout but dropped round one to Tony Pedregon.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Force put on a virtuoso performance at Indy in winning a record-tying 11th event of the season, a 59th career win and a record sixth Winston Funny Car title. And if that wasn't enough, he also won his 4th Big Bud Shootout. Force qualified #1 (4.966 Low ET of Meet and Track Record).

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 16th at 5.18/295.76 but had the misfortune of running against John Force in round one. Would eventually be the sixth member of the Castrol Four Second Club (October 26/1996) with a 4.932 at Pomona Calif. | Richard Hartman had the only Chevy-bodied car to qualify in Funny Car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.51/218.49 got him the #15 spot in the field. He shocked Tony Pedregon in the opening round when his 5.04/297.42 beat the #2 qualifier's 5.11/300. Tony was so surprised that he thought his car had broken the way Richard had pulled away. But in round two, Hartman lost to Gary Clapshaw in a Camaro versus Mustang run. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Richard's 5.15/293.82 qualified #3. But this time, it was he who was upset in the first round. Gary Bolger, who qualified #14, stepped up to 5.24 to eliminate him in the opening round. Hartman continued to qualify strongly at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.08/293.73 qualified #2 behind Al Hofmann's 5.06/287. He had a close first-round race that saw his 5.11/282.57 beat Tim Wilkerson's 5.14/275. But in round two, an off-pace 5.54/221.02 lost to Del Worsham's 5.41/215. It was then off to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 5.13/288.83 qualified #5. But he lost to Tony Pedregon in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Richard ran 4.932/304.05 to lead qualifying at the NHRA World Finals. Unfortunately, he lost to Ray Higley in round one, when he shut off to a 12-second pass.

Notes: Higley was at Bakersfield late in January for its warm-up race. He was having a lot of problems and his best time was 11.20-86.88. Things went much better the following week (Feb. 5) at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He received some tuning help from Roland Leong. His previous best had been 5.50 before this race. His career-best (to this point) 5.22/287.53 qualified #6. Unfortunately, the car broke against Jim Epler in the first round. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where more problems kept him to a 9.53/99.53 non-qualifying attempt. Things didn't go any better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where he failed to qualify with an 8.10/113.07 best. He recovered from those two horrible showing by running 5.41/260.04 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Although he still didn't qualify(first alternate), it was a step in the right direction. He was the second alternate at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.85/198.01. Memphis saw Hiley take a step backward in performance, as he failed to qualify with an 11.59/71.69. Ray went to Pomona for the NHRA World Finals but had problems during qualifying. The best he could run was 5.73/174.38, which was good for the fourth alternate. Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. DNQ (first alternate) with a best of 5.39/283.19. Ray's best NHRA times were 5.184 at Topeka and 287.53 at the Winters, but he ran several events.

Notes: Hofmann couldn't have started the season any better; he won the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He had qualified #3 at 5.13/297.61. He then improved to 5.06/305.18 in the opening round to beat Mark Sievers. In the second round, his 5.13/294.88 defeated Del Worsham's 5.21/288. In the semifinal, he had a close race against Gary Clapshaw that saw both drivers run 5.16 (Al at "only" 250.20). But Hofmann got the win. In the final, he faced the always tough John Force. John had problems and slowed to 5.40/228 while Al ran 5.05/302.72 for the victory. While the Winternationals was a race for Al to remember, the NHRA Arizona Nationals was one he would probably want to forget. He "only" qualified #11 with a 5.28/289.01 and was packing up and headed home after the first round, where he lost to Whit Bazemore. Things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Al qualified #1 at 5.06/287.90. A 5.13/295.66 in the first round beat Gary Bolger, but he fouled against Cruz Pedregon in round two. After that, he visited Roy Hill's driving school to get better on the lights. He then went to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals and ran 5.08/299.90 to qualify #3. He got "revenge" on Bazemore by beating him with a 5.09/298.70 in the first round. Another 5.09 at 296.54 in the second round beat Mark Oswald's 5.21/283. He headed to the final after his 5.12/290.13 defeated Worsham's 5.17/286 in the semifinal. Unfortunately, Al smoked the tires in the final and shut down to 9.81/82.84, while Force got the win with a 5.05/294. Another runner-up finish to Force came at Rockingham in mid-April for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was just an eight-car field, and his 5.12/294.02 qualified #3. Dean Skuza crossed the centerline against him in the first round, and Al advanced with a 5.19/286.62. In the semifinal, he had a good race with Cruz Pedregon that saw his 5.16/293.54 beat Cruz's 5.18/292. His final 5.18/292.96 fell to Force's 5.13/277. Shortly after that (April 21), he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was not a memorable event for him. His 5.32/270.75 qualified #8, and he lost to Chuck Etchells in round one. Things went only slightly better at Richmond in the first week of June for the NHRA Virginia Nationals, where he qualified #3 at 5.09/293.82. Kenji Okazaki's 5.35/267 lost to his 5.07/292.40 in the first round, but a late 5.14/290.88 lost to Worsham's 5.16/284 in round two. Al ran his best times of the year with a semifinal finish at Topeka, running 4.986/308.21 in eliminations before losing to Force. Hofmann came to Indy without Crew Chief Tom Anderson after nearly six years together. He qualified 7th at 5.08/299 with new crew chief Jim Ermalovich. Hofmann marched to the finals (improving to 5.03 and 306.01 in the process), then wheelstood against John Force and lost. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy.

Notes: Hoover qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.485/246.84. Unfortunately, the car broke against Whit Bazemore in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals held near the end of February, his 5.425/239.68 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, he lost to low qualifier and eventual winner John Force, 5.12/295 to a 10-second shutoff. He had an eventful weekend at Gainesville in March. During qualifying, the car went into a wheelstand, and the body fell off the chassis. The chassis returned to the track, but the body was damaged. He mounted another one and ran 5.185/280.63 to qualify #10. After all that work, Hoover smoked the tires to 6.044/163.01 in a losing effort against Del Worsham in the first round. Seventeen fuel FCs showed up at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, and Tom qualified #9 at 5.177/269.94. More problems in round one saw Hoover and his opponent, Kenji Okazaki, both overpower the track and smoke the tires. When Hoover saw Kenji's tire smoke, he hammered it again, and the front end came up. The body once again flew off, landing right side up this time. When the chassis hit the pavement, it broke a Heim joint, and Hoover had no steering. He hit the wall, scraping along it for quite a short distance. Kenji won with a 10-second pass, and Tom was disqualified. The NHRA Winston Invitational saw Hoover have more of a "normal" weekend. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field and lost to low qualifier Force in the first round. NHRA Atlanta only had 16 cars show up, and qualifiers 13/16 were all over 10 seconds! Tom was #13 at 10.389/82.92. He lost to Mark Oswald in round one, 5.75/259 to 9.805/87.22. He qualified on the bump at NHRA Richmond with a 5.440/237.96 but lost to Force in round one, 5.040/297 to 5.962/165.68. He again benefitted from a 16-car field in Englishtown, and his 8.413/99.55 was #15. Tom lost to Al Hoffmann in round one, 5.14/297 to another abysmal run of 11.006/79.82. Only Jerry Caminito's 9.62 first alternate effort allowed Tom's 8.297/102.31 into the field in Columbus. Again, he suffered significant issues in round one and lost to Force, 5.02/304 to 10.565/84.01. Tom improved somewhat by Memphis, qualifying #10 at 5.350/256.77. He surprised Al Hoffmann in round one, 7.216/125.54 to an 8.73/87. Gremlins crept back in by round two, and Cruz Pedregon won easily, 5.24/293 to 8.932/95.79. Tom also had a solid qualifying effort at Topeka Spring, going 5.239/268.89 for #12. He beat Tim Wilkerson in round one, running 5.395/210.52 when Tim Broke. Hoffmann got to him in round two, however, 6.39/163 to Tom's troubled 13.111/72.63. Tom qualified #11 up on the mountain in Denver, going 5.369/255.39. He lost to Gary Densham in round one, 5.30/288 to 7.915/104.93. In Sonoma, Tom went 5.245/257.87 for #13 on the qualifying sheet. He actually made a representative run in round one, but his 5.551/210.72 lost to Hofmann's 5.09/305. Tom was the first alternate in Seattle at 9.266/88.98 but qualified #10 at Brainerd at 5.217/269.20. He again lost a step in round one, falling to Tony Pedregon, 5.20/297 to 6.362/146.48. At Indy, Tom qualified 15th at 5.180/285.08. He lost a close one to Tony Pedregon in round one. 5.01/306 to 5.109/283.64. Tom did not qualify for the Big Bud Shootout race within a race at Indy. He was the first alternate at Maple Grove at 5.770/188.12 but qualified #14 at Topeka Fall at 5.142/243.96. Tom lost to Cruz Pedregon in round one, 5.16/301 to 10.215/84.76. At Ennis, Tom stepped up to 5.111/281.16 for the #8 spot, his best qualifying spot of the year. He kept it going in round one, too, hitting 5.098/278.29 to take out Dean Skuza's 5.23/267. His off-pace 7.983/105.93 lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.06/301 in round two. Tom wrapped up the year with a #13 qualifying spot at the Winston Finals, going 5.166/256.62. A 12.040-83.13 lost to nemesis Al Hoffman's 5.43/204 in round one. Tom was one of the most consistent funny car racers in history, with solid times nearly every year. I would love to know what happened to him in 1996. Bad clutch discs, perhaps? It was a brutal year for one of the nicest guys on the circuit. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy.
