Notes: Cheek had a very good season in 1999. The IHRA season started in Darlington in March for the Winternationals. Cheek's 6.633/208.20 qualified #3, but the race was rained out after qualifying. Near the end of the month, IHRA held its Amalie Nationals at Bradenton. Floyd qualified #5 at 6.70/207.42. In the opening round, his 6.77/205.90 defeated John Montecalvo's 6.80/202. He then ran another 6.77 at 205.52 in round two to beat Charlie Peppers' 6.86/201. Gene Wilson had problems against him in the semi-final and Cheek's 6.76/205.66 advanced. It was a all-Ford final as he faced Jon Yoak. Yoak fouled away a 6.77/206 while Floyd ran 6.76/205.85 for the victory. The next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Springnationals. Cheek qualified #3 at 6.72/207.70 and went on to win this race as well. In round one, a 6.94/203.29 took out Jeremy Bevins' quicker 6.85/203. In the second round, his 6.81/204.73 stopped Tim Nabors' 6.85/202. In the semi-final, he picked it up to 6.71/207.70 to beat Chris Holbrook's quicker 6.68/208. Once again he faced Yoak in the final and this time Cheek's 6.74/206.99 got the better of Jon's 6.75/207. IHRA then returned to Darlington to wrap up its Winternationals. It appeared as though Cheek would make it three wins in a row in IHRA competition. He started by running 6.80/203.80 over Bevins' 6.83/205. In the second round, his 6.74/205.04 beat Tom Lee's 6.79/200. A 6.73 in the semi-final put a end to Yoak's 6.83 and he faced low qualifier Holbrook in the final. The two had a good race but Holbrook's 6.72/206 snagged the victory over Floyd's 6.74/204.60. It was then off to Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals. Floyd qualified #4 with a 6.75/206.70. In round one, his 6.84/204.26 beat Peppers' 6.86/203. But in round two, he fouled away a 6.84/203.83 against eventual winner Lee's 6.85/205. Shortly after that, he was at New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He ran 6.71/206.99 to qualify #7 but suffered his first first-round loss when his 6.77/206.29 fell to Dwayne Rice's 6.78/205. He qualified #7 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.83/203.65. A easy 7.05/193.46 advanced in the first round when Gene Wilson got out of shape and shut off. Montecalvo also had problems against him and shut down in the second round. Cheek ran 6.85/203.31 to advance. In the semi-final, he got out on John Konigshofer and his 6.83/203.80 held off John's better 6.82/204. He went up against Ron Miller in the final. Ron's times had been better than his throughout eliminations. But Floyd pulled onre "out of the hat," as his holeshot 6.83/204.01 in the final got him another victory over Miller's better 6.79/205. 1999 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. 1997 IHRA Pro Stock Champ qualified 7th (no times), defeated and out-of-shape Gene Wilson in Round 1 with a winning 7.05/193 and John Montecalvo in Round 2 with a 6.85/203. In the semis, Cheek's holeshot 6.83/203 beat a quicker, but losing 6.82 by Jon Konigshofer in the semis and finally another holeshot win over Ron Miller in the final. A 6.83/204 beating a 6.79/205 for his third win of year. Photo is final round action. Notes: Cheek was a Ford racer even when Ford was done in IHRA. Ford drivers had one every IHRA event except one in 1987, and when Billy Meyer purchased the IHRA, he changed the rules for the '88 season. Oldsmobile sponsored Meyer. For the '88 season, he went to the 500 c.i. format but continued to let the IHRA "Mountain Motored" cars run, but they had to carry extra weight. After Rickie Smith, driving a Ford, won three of the association's first four races, Meyer added still more weight and made the big-engined cars uncompetitive. The Ford runners dropped like flies as these big-engined cars were expensive to run. Ford would not win another Pro Stock race for many seasons in IHRA. After Meyer left, IHRA returned to its roots, letting the "Mountain Motored" cars compete again. Cheek was one of the first to make the brand competitive again. In 1990, he ran well and continued that momentum, bringing Fords back into the IHRA fields. In 1997, he won the IHRA Pro Stock Championship. By 2000, almost half the qualified field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals was made up of Ford Probes or T-Birds. Floyd qualified #15 there with a 6.80/202.27. In the first round, he got out on Dwayne Rice, who was late off the line. It looked like Cheek had the win in hand when the Probe got out of shape, and he had to back out of it. He slowed to 8.30/114.19 in a loss to Rice's 6.71/206. The next race was the IHRA Springnationals held at Rockingham. Cheek qualified #11 with a 6.75/205.57. In the opening round, his 6.70/207.08 fell to Steve Spiess' 6.69/208. He then went to Canada in the first week of June for the IHRA Canadian Nationals. A 6.68/206.94 qualified #10. In round one, he had a good race against Jon Yoak that saw his 6.72/206.23 lose to Yoak's 6.68/207. At Cordova, his 6.74/206.54 qualified #11 for the IHRA Summernationals. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.89/206.92 against Yoak's 6.68/209. 2000 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Defending event champ (far lane) qualified 5th at 6.76/208.23 and defeated a broken Jason Collins in Round 1 with a 6.81, but got out of shape in round two and lost to Wally Stroupe's winning 6.77. Notes: Evans did not have a great start to the year when his 6.83/202.47 failed to qualify (fourth alternate) at Bradenton for the IHRA Winternationals. He was still driving his T-Bird at this event. He had his new Probe running in time for the IHRA Southern Nationals held at Darlington in May. Unfortunately, new car blues held the car back to an 8.40/115.09 best in qualifying, far off the 6.79 it took to make the field. Stewart was back in his familiar T-Bird at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in July. It paid off as his 6.82/201.49 in qualifying was only second to Floyd Cheek's similar 6.82 at 202. But Evans was eliminated in the first round, where his quicker, but later 6.93/200.68 lost to Bob Holzer's 6.99/195. That was the last race for the T-Bird, as now the team ran the Probe for the remainder of the year. The next IHRA event was the Empire Nationals held at New York International in mid-July. A 6.88/201.37 qualified #14 in the field. Eventual winner Jon Yoak stopped his 7.04/197.68 in the opening round with a 6.94/199. 1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified 8th at 6.78/204.88. Defeated Angelo Alesci in round one. 6.80 to 6.82 (to avenge last year's first-round loss to Alesci), but lost to Doug Kirk's holeshot in round two (photo). A 6.86/202 beating a 6.85/203. He also qualified #14 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals with a 6.81/203.75. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.83/203.25 against Daniel Seamon, who advanced at 6.78/204. Everything went his way at Epping for the IHRA North American Nationals held in mid-Sept. His 6.70/206.64 qualified #2 behind Chris Holbrook's 6.69/208. A 6.73/207.72 beat Yoak's 6.81/205 in the opening round, and in round two, he defeated Dwayne Rice's troubled 10.31 with another 6.73 at 208.10. John Konigshofer got out of shape against him in the semifinal, and Evans ran 6.72/207.53 to advance. He faced the Probe of Seamon in the final. The two had a great race that saw Stewart pick up his first IHRA Pro Stock victory with a 6.69/207.56 that just nipped Daniel's slightly quicker 6.68/207. He wasn't sneaking up on the field at Maryland International for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. Everyone knew he was there as he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.67/207.02. But he didn't stick around long during eliminations as in the first round, his late 6.78/203.98 fell to Rice's 6.87/202. The season ended at Shreveport for the IHRA World Finals. There, Evans qualified #6 with a 6.76/206.10. In the opening round, he improved to 6.69/206.42 to take out Yoak's 6.71/206. But in round two, the car got slightly out of shape, and he crossed the centerline while racing Seamon, who advanced with a 6.67/207. Rick Howard photo from IHRA Stanton, MI.

Notes: Every so often, a driver gets a dream season, a year when everything just seems to go your way. Holbrook had one of those in 1999. He had never won in Pro Stock before this year. The season started at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. During qualifying, he reset the IHRA record to 6.61. That, of course, was good for the pole. His speed on the pass was 209.07. The race was then rained out and postponed until May. The next IHRA event was the Amalie Nationals held at Bradenton near the end of March. Holbrook's 6.66 (Low ET) at 208.47 qualified #1. In the opening round, his 6.76/206.13 beat Dwayne Rice. But in round two, a 6.81/205.85 lost to Gene Wilson's 6.79/204. At Rockingham, his 6.72/207.56 qualified second to John Montecalvo's 6.71/207 for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.76/206.18 in the first round defeated Baker's ailing 9.98/91. He then ran 6.77/205.76 in round two to beat Tom Lee's 6.80/204. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the semi-final with a 6.68/208.76. Unfortunately, that came with a loss at Floyd Cheek had gotten out on him as his 6.71/207 held on to win. Floyd went on to win the race making it two in a row in the early season. The teams then returned to Darlington to wrap up the Winternationals. Chris made up some ground here as he won the race. He started by beating Chuck DeMory's 6.90/200 in the first round with a 6.74/206.16. Another 6.74 at 205.94 beat Rice's 6.76/205 in round two. Montecalvo fouled away a 6.76/204 against him in the semi-final, and Chris advanced with a 6.72/205.16. Cheek was in his third final of the year, and Holbrook had lane choice over him as Floyd had run 6.73 in his semi-final race. The two had a great race that saw Holbrook's 6.72/206.45 get the victory over Floyd's 6.74/204. The next stop was at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals. Every race of the season had been all-Ford finals, but at Cordova, the GM camp was fighting back. Chris had the quickest Ford in qualifying as his 6.74/207.08 got him the #3 spot. His 6.84/204.94 took out Ed Machacek's off-pace Firebird in round one. In round two, his 6.85/204.76 lost to Jon Yoak's 6.83/206. Cheek also lost in that round, so he didn't lose points to him. Amazingly enough, despite both these Ford drivers losing in round two, the final came down to another all-Ford final between Lee and Yoak. Holbrook showed his dominance in New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He qualified #1 with track records of 6.65/208.55. DeMory fouled against him in round one, and Chris advanced at 6.70/207.30. A second-round 6.75 beat Doug Kirk, and a 6.74/207.43 took care of a fouling Ron Miller in the semi-final. For the first time this season, a GM car reached the final. It was Steve Spiess's Cutlass. He was no slouch as he qualified second and ran 6.75 in his semi-final win. But Holbrook was up to the challenge, running 6.73/207.53 to get his second victory of the season over Steve's 6.77/206. He qualified #1 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.75 (Low ET) at 205.60. Jeremy Bevins' 6.88/203 lost to his 6.79/206.13 (Top Speed) in the first round. But in round two, the car got out of shape against Rice, and Holbrook crossed the centerline. Another win came at Norwalk at the end of August for the IHRA World Nationals. He "only" qualified #8 at 6.76/205.91. But he picked up the pace once eliminations started. A 6.76/207.37 defeated Gene Wilson's out-of-shape T-Bird. Montecalvo knew enough that he had to try for a good light against him and fouled away a 6.76/206. Chris advanced with a 6.74/206.45. Another 6.74 at 206.45 advanced in the semi-final when Spiess fouled against him. It was another all-Ford final, and he faced relative newcomer Bevins. Both had run 6.74 in the semi-final. It was a great race between the two as Chris' 6.72/207.08 nipped Bevins' 6.73/206. Shortly after that, Holbrook was in New England for the IHRA North American Nationals. His 6.69/207.69 qualified #6. He cut a good light in round one, and his 6.72/208.46 beat Lee's 6.71/208. In the second round, his 6.74/206.95 beat Baker's 6.82/204. In the semi-final, Chris's 6.76/208.20 lost to Ron Miller's 6.71/208. There was no Ford in the IHRA Pro Stock final for the first time this season. Holbrook 'fixed" that at the next race as he won the IHRA Autumn Nationals held at Rockingham. He qualified #1 at 6.67 (Low ET) at 207.23. Machacek fouled against him in the first round, and he ran 6.71/207.75 to win. In round two, he ran 6.72/207.13 over Bob Holzer's 6.79/205. Lee then fouled against him in the semi-final, and a 6.73/207.42 advanced into the final. There he raced Montecalvo's strong Chevy, which had qualified second. Holbrook showed he could drive, as his 6.73/207.70 got the win over John's slightly better 6.72/207. He then went to Maryland International and won the IHRA President's Cup Championships. A 6.646/208.75 qualified #3. He then ran 6.71/207.94 in the opening round to beat Harold Robinson's 6.95/196. Tim Nabors' 6.78/205 fell to his 6.73/208.23 in round two, and another 6.73 at 205.54 dropped low qualifier Lee's 6.74/208 in the semi-final. Once again, he lined up with Cheek in the final. Floyd had problems and shut off while Holbrook streaked to a 6.69/208.55 for the win. Photo: 1999 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified No. 1 with Low ET of Meet 6.75/205. With three wins on the season that would lead to the points championship, Holbrook, near lane, got out of shape in round one and kicked a cone at the 330-ft mark, giving the win to Dwayne Rice. Testing: 6.698 206.70 Darlington SC 2/28/99, 1st 6.662 208.47 Bradenton FL 3/27/99, 2nd 6.725 207.56 IHRA Rockingham 4/10/99, 3rd 6.744 207.78 Cordova IL 7/19/99, 1st 6.654 208.55 Leicester NY 7/10/99, 1st 6.754 205.60 IHRA Stanton MI 7/31/99, 6th 6.695 208.20 IHRA Epping NH 9/12/99, 1st 6.676 208.42 Winner IHRA Rockingham NC 9/25/99, 3rd 6.646 208.75 IHRA Budds Creek MD 10/2/99, 3rd 6.68 208.55 IHRA Gilliam LA 10/17/99.
