Notes: Jim was the first alternate at Memphis with a 7.42/187.22 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in May. He did much better at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. He got his best ever spot in an NHRA National event when his 7.33/187.46 qualified #4. A first-round 7.35/186.95 beat Jerry Haas' 7.40/186. He had a close second-round race with Gordie Rivera, where his 7.38/186.68 beat Rivera's 7.39/186. In the semifinals, he faced Warren Johnson, and although his 7.37/187.30 was good, WJ's 7.34/187 was better. Yates followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran a career-best 7.24 at 189.91 to qualify #2. He beat Joe Folgore in round one, with a 7.36/188.63, but a round two 7.34/188.08 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.23/191. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #10 with a 7.29/189.99. An opening round 7.40/186.10 beat Larry Morgan, but his 7.36/187.14 lost to eventual winner Darrell Alderman's 7.31/186 in round two. Denver was the next stop for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Yates installed a Liberty Clutchless 5-speed transmission in the car and ran it for the first time in competition. Jim qualified #7 with a 7.75/177.83, and he had a close first-round race with Butch Leal that saw his 7.81/176.36 beat Leal's 7.83/175. But Alderman got him again in round two, where the Dodge's 7.73/176 beat his 7.80/177.09. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the California Nationals at Sonoma. A 7.29/191.44 qualified #10, improving to 7.26/188.91 to defeat Scott Geoffrion's 7.28/191 in the opening round. In round two, heavy tire shake forced him to shut down to a 7.66.182.18 loss to Alderman's 7.28/191. A couple of days after that (July 31), he was at Woodburn for its Pro Stock Invitational. Ten cars were there to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In Yates's first race, his 7.39/186 beat Rickie Smith's 7.47/187. The second race saw him improve to 7.33/188 to beat Joe Lepone Jr, but his times were not good enough to advance into the final. Rick Howard photo from 1991 NHRA Springnats, Columbus, Ohio.

Notes: Rick Howard photo. Also ran 9.84 at St. Louis. | Jim qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 10.092/138.24. He had the third quickest Chevy in the 32 car field behind Ron Hutter and Bill Jenkins. He lasted until round two before losing to Arlen Vanke. Shortly after that, he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. This was a sixteen-car field and five Camaros made the field with Jim's 10.16 being the slowest (#15). But he picked up to 10.06/136.98 in the first round, to beat Dick Oldfield who fouled away a 9.96/140 in the "Motown Missile.” Another strong run of 10.07/137.19 beat Lee Smith's quicker 10.02/138 in round two and going into the semifinals, Hayter had the only Chevy left in the field. But he slowed to 10.12/137.67 and lost to eventual winner Vanke’s 10.01/140. In Mid-March, he joined the Fred Gibb racing team. He was the strongest of the four Chevy qualifiers at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.750/141.16. But he fell off to 10.13/137.61 in the opening round that lost to Reid Whisnant's 10.05/138. His next stop was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final, but in spite of running 9.96/137.61 he was nowhere close to the winning 9.71/141 of Don Carlton who had now taken over driving the "Motown Missile.” The Chevy Pro Stock teams were having a harder and harder time trying to keep pace with the Mopar Hemis. Even the Fords stepped up their pace and the Chevy teams were starting to fall behind. It was dark days for them in NHRA competition, but AHRA decided to let the Chevys have a weight handicap. Of course, this helped immensely. At Green Valley Raceway, for the next AHRA Grand American race, all the Mopar teams boycotted this race except for Bobby Yowell. So, the field was made up of fourteen Chevys, one Ford, and Yowell's Duster. It was a Chevy lover's dream. Jim beat the Camaros of Wayne Dobbs, Bill Hielscher, and Royce Freeman to reach the final. His semifinal win came with a 10.09. His final round opponent was Joe Satmary whose semifinal win came at 10.32. So, it looked like Hayter had the win in the bag, but he fouled and gave the win to Satmary. Things were still really bad for the Chevy teams in NHRA as at Dallas, for the NHRA Springnationals, Jim only qualified #18 in the 32 car show. He lost to eventual winner Ronnie Sox in the opening round.rn

Notes: Photo from 1998 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Qualified 9th at 6.78/204.08 and was a first-round loser (to Stewart Evans) with a trailing 6.82/204.01 mph. Angelo had one of the strongest cars running in IHRA Pro Stock competition in '97. He had won races and was low qualifier at a few events. His '98 season was good, but it didn't match the previous year. The season started at Bradenton at the end of March for the IHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.78/204.22 to qualify #10. He lost to the similar Monte Carlo of John Montecalvo in the opening round. IHRA's second race of the season was the Southern Nationals held at Darlington in early May. Alesci qualified #9 with a 6.76/203.40, but he again lost in the opening round. This time his 6.82/203.16 fell to eventual winner Daniel Seamon's 6.76/203. In July, he showed up at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in a Firebird. Angelo ran 6.83/200.14 to qualify #3. Once again, he lost early, this time a 6.90/200.50 lost to Montecalvo's 6.89/199 in the opening round. Things went even worse at the IHRA Empire Nationals, where the Firebird's 6.93/200.05 best (fourth alternate) failed to qualify. He was back in his trusty Monte Carlo at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he ran 6.78/204.08 to qualify #9. He was still having a rough time getting past the first-round as a 6.82/204.01 lost to Stuart Evans' 6.80/203. Things fell into place at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. After not getting out of the first-round at any event, he would take Chevy's only victory of '98 (Cutlass' won 2 and Firebird won one). Angelo qualified #5 at 6.77/203.89. He then had a close first-round race that saw his 6.79/204.12 beat Dwayne Rice's 6.80/204. In round two, he beat Montecalvo's 6.84/202 with a 6.81/203.89. In the semifinals, he faced low qualifier Ron Miller and defeated him with a 6.79/203.48 to Miller's 6.85/203. After running three GM cars, he met the Ford Probe of Chris Holbrook in the final. Chris had run 6.77 in his semifinal race, so the final was close. But Holbrook pushed the tree too hard and fouled away a 6.77/207 (!), while Alesci grabbed the victory with a 6.79/204.40. From that, he went to failing to qualify at Epping for the IHRA North American Nationals. He was the second alternate there with a 6.75/203.95. He rebounded by qualifying #7 at the IHRA President's Cup Championships with a 6.71/204.32. He beat Gene Wilson's 6.85/203 in the first round, with a 6.77/202.61. Another 6.77 at 203.74 beat Holbrook's quicker 6.73/207 in round two, but he shut off to 8.98/95.71 in the semifinals to lose to Seamon's 6.75/205. The season ended at Shreveport for the IHRA World Finals. Angelo qualified #1 at 6.71/205.76. His season ended early when the car broke against Ed Machacek in the opening round.

Notes: Most of the IHRA Ford Pro Stock entries used Probes. But there were still a couple of drivers running the long-wheelbase T-Birds in competition. Baker was one of them. He started his season at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. The race was rained out after qualifying and postponed until May. Baker's 6.70/205.41 had qualified #15. The teams then went to Bradenton at the end of March for the IHRA Amelie Nationals. Carl qualified #9with a 6.75/205.76. Only one other T-Bird qualified at both these races, Gene Wilson's. These two raced each other in the opening round, and Wilson's 6.76/205 beat his 6.83/203.48. Baker also qualified #15 at Rockingham for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.85/202.83. He had problems in the first round and shut down to 9.98/91.03 in a loss to Chris Holbrook's 6.76/206. The teams then returned to Darlington to run the IHRA Winternationals. Carl didn't stick around long as his 6.84/202.64 in the first round fell to Steve Spiess' 6.78/205. The next race on the IHRA schedule was the Summernationals held at Cordova in June. A 6.85/204.60 qualified #15. He got a bit of luck in the first round when #2 qualifier Spiess was late off the line, and Carl's 6.88/202.64 held off Steve's 6.82/206. In round two, he defeated Ron Miller's 6.87/204 with a 6.83/203.86. His run ended in the semi-finals, where his 6.84/204.14 lost to Jon Yoak's 6.83/205. It was still a very good run as he had come so far down in the field to post a semi-final finish. At every IHRA event he qualified at, Wilson's T-Bird had also made the show. At every race, Baker's was the slower of the two, and the trend continued at New York, where Wilson had qualified #6 while Carl was #12 at 6.77/205.57 for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Baker slightly improved to 6.76/205.22 in round one, but it wasn't enough to beat Yoak's 6.72/207. He failed to qualify for the first time this season at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he was the first alternate with a 6.95/200.74 best. He took his customary #15 starting spot at Norwalk with a 6.84/203.43 for the IHRA World Nationals. In the first round against Tom Lee, he got badly out of shape and shut down to a 13.05/63.16 loss. Only thirteen cars showed at New England for the IHRA North American Nationals, and Baker ran 6.78/204.35 to qualify #12. In round one, he improved to 6.76/205.04 to beat Wilson's 6.78/206 in an all-T-Bird battle. In round two, he fell off to 6.82/204.14 and lost to Chris Holbrook's 6.74/206. 9th 6.745 205.76 IHRA Bradenton FL 3/27/99, 15th Rockingham NC 6.853 202.83 4/10/99, 15th 6.856 204.60 Cordova IL 6/19/99, 12th 6.771 205.57 IHRA Leicester NY 6/10/99, 17th 6.956 200.74 Stanton MI 7/31/99. 15th 6.846 204.43 IHRA Norwalk OH 8/29/99, 12th 6.765 205.04 IHRA Epping NH 9/11/99, 17th 6.801 204.82 IHRA Rockingham NC 9/26/99, 12th 6.766 204.54 IHRA Budds Creek MD 10/2/99, 6.801 204.82 IHRA Rockingham NC 9/25/99. Notes: Cheek was at Darlington on January 14 to make some test runs. He ran a best of 6.653/208.23. The speed was the fastest ever for a Pro Stock car. At Bradenton, for the IHRA Winternationals, the Fords were flying. They took the first five spots in qualifying. Cheek was #4 at 6.76/205.71. He beat Tony Gillig in the opening round with a 6.80/204.96. In round two, his 6.78/204.82 defeated Jon Yoak. But he then fouled away a 6.79/205.57 in the semi-final against Jerry Yeoman, who advanced at 6.81/202. The teams were back at Darlington in May for the IHRA Southern Nationals. Floyd's 6.78/205.10 qualified #13. His day ended early as his 6.83/204.63 in the first round lost to Gillig's 6.75/204. Cheek set Low ET while qualifying low at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in July. His 6.82/202.76 got him the spot. In round one, a 6.89/199.55 easily beat John Konigshofer's troubled 7.32/152. Another 6.82 at 201.58 took out Yoak's 6.92/199 in round two. He picked up to 6.86/203.09 (Top Speed) in the semi-final to drop David Jenkins' 6.90/200. He faced Ron Miller in the final, and Cheek had the edge as he had been quicker in every round than Miller. But Ron got out on him in the final, and his 6.92/199 held on for the victory over Cheek's 6.88/202.27 runner-up effort. After qualifying on the pole, he barely made the show at New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 6.90/201.31 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He faced low qualifier John Montecalvo in round one and shut down to 7.7/142.16 in a loss to John's 6.89/200. Photo: 1998 IHRA Northern Nats, Stanton, MI. Defending IHRA Pro Stock World Champ, far lane, qualified 5th at 6.76/205.54 but was beaten by Gene Wilson's holeshot in Round 1, a 6.88/192 over his 6.78/205.
