Notes: Warren started his '93 season on the right foot as he won the NHRA Winternationals. Not only did he win, but he also qualified #1 with a 7.16/194.04 (Top Speed). He also watched his son Kurt race in his first NHRA race and make it into the semifinals. Warren set Low ET in the first round with a 7.14 at 193.46 to beat Vince Khoury's 7.29/191. A 7.15/193.88 beat Bruce Allen's 7.24/191 in round two, and in the semifinals, his 7.18/192.84 beat Ray Frank's 7.26/189. In the final, he faced the Dodge of Scott Geoffrion. On this day, there was no catching WJ as his 7.24/192.02 beat the Dodge's 7.35/187. He qualified #1 at Arizona as well with a 7.21/192.30 for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. He then ran the race's best times in the first round, with a 7.15/193.05 over Franks' 7.32/189. He was late off the line in round two, and his 7.22/192.14 lost to Allen's 7.24/190. Johnson almost broke into the sixes at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with a 7.02/195.05 in qualifying #1. He beat Khoury's 7.25/191 in the first round, with a 7.11/194.09, but he fell to a Rickie Smith holeshot in round two that saw his 7.11/194.25 lose to Smith's 7.17/191. Warren found his way back into the winner's circle at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time at 7.06 (Low ET) at a national record 196.24 got him the spot. He beat a fouling Paul Rebeschi in the first round, with a 7.12/193.84, and in round two, his 7.14/192.47 took out Khoury's 7.22/191. In the semifinals, Mark Pawuk fouled against him, and Johnson advanced with a 7.13/193.59. He faced Larry Morgan in the final, and Larry got out of shape and slowed to 8.13/130 while Warren won his 46 NHRA National Event with a 7.14/193.17. He didn't have long to wait before he won again. The win came at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. Johnson set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 7.09/195.05. He set a new track speed record in the first round, where his 7.10/196.20 beat Rebeschi. A second-round 7.12/195.65 beat Jerry Eckman and a 7.11/195.35 beat his son, Kurt's 7.15/193 in the semifinals. In the final, he met his nemesis, Bob Glidden, and WJ got the victory with a 7.12/195.39 over Glidden's 7.24/192.Rick Howard photo from 1993 NHRA Oldsmobile SpringNats, Columbus. Qualified No. 1 at 7.16/193.54 - Low ET and Top Speed - and ran the table by beating Todd Tutterow, Ray Franks, Lewis Worden and won the event when his son Kurt fouled in the final (photo). |

Notes: Tom had an excellent year, often qualifying on the NHRA tour and going rounds. He started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 7.04/196.46 qualified #3. Tom was upset in the first round when Billy Glidden caught a great light and ran 7.11/194 to win over Martino's 7.09/196.20. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 7.09/195.18 qualified #15. His 7.10/195.31 beat Jerry Eckman in the opening round, and a 7.11/194.51 advanced over a fouling Mike Edwards in round two. In the semi-final, he defeated Ray Franks' 7.17/192 with a 7.14/193.75. He went up against Jim Yates in the final, and his car went into heavy tire shake, slowing to a 7.74/134.67 runner-up finish to Yates's 7.05/194. The next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals.Tom's 7.06/195.22 qualified #13. He got off the line first in his first-round race against Kurt Johnson, and his 7.08/195.52 held on to win over Kurt's 7.07/195. In the second round, his 7.08/195.69 fell to Steve Schmidt's 7.05/196. The NHRA Slick 50 Nationals was run at Houston, and Tom qualified #5 there with a 7.02/195.35. He slowed to 7.16/193.63 in round one, and it wasn't enough to beat Bob Glidden's 7.08/195. He then went to Rockingham, where he barely qualified for the NHRA Wiston Invitational. His 7.05/195.77 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He faced low qualifier Edwards in the first round, and his 7.16/193.34 beat Mike's late7.14/194. He surprised Glidden in round two with a 7.09 and then repeated that number in the semi-final at 194.13 to defeat Rickie Smith's 7.10/194. He faced Warren Johnson in the final, and Martino got his second runner-up of the year with his 7.16/191.28, finishing second best to WJ's 7.05/195. He shot back up on the qualifying list at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 7.05/194.93 got him the #4 spot in the grid. He beat Mark Carter's 7.13/194 in the first round with a 7.10/195.22, and in round two, his 7.08/194.72 took out Bruce Allen's 7.17/193. In the semi-final, Kurt Johnson's 7.05/195 got the better of his 7.07/195.35. Rick Howard qualifying photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 4th at 7.07/195.10. Beat Billy Glidden before falling in round two to eventual winner Kurt Johnson. (Confirmed 7.005 at Maple Grove '96 and 196.80 at Pomona Finals '96. We formerly listed 6.97 at 197.84. Notes: Patrick had run really well in the big IHRA Mountain Motored car. When Bob Glidden was getting out of racing in '97, Robert bought him out. NHRA was a far cry from IHRA as the "small" engines had a select few engine builders that dominated the NHRA qualifying sheets. Patrick's desire to keep a Ford competitive in the class kept him hard at work, developing more hp. He sat on the outside looking in at many races, but he had reason to hold his head up high as the car ran well, considering there was no factory help. NHRA Pro Stock racing at this time was more or less a bracket race consisting of many low "7", high "6" second Pontiac Firebirds. Of the 32 cars that showed up to attempt to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, 17 were Firebirds. Of course, Patrick had the only Ford. It took a 6.99 to make the field, and he ended up as the eleventh alternate at 7.03/197.36. He did not go to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gaornationals. There, he opened some eyes when he qualified #12 with a 6.94/199.29. He ran well in the first round with a 6.96/199.24, but not as well as eventual winner Warren Johnson, who won with a 6.89/201. Shortly after that, he was in Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 6.93/198.58 qualified #14. That was pretty impressive when a one-off engine combination with a much lower budget could out-qualify Steve Schmidt, Bruce Allen, Troy Coughlin, Scott Geoffrion, and Tom Martino, among others. Qualifying was one thing; getting past that first round was another. In round one, Patrick's 7.01/197.49 fell to Mike Thomas' 6.90/199. His next stop was at Rockingham, a place he was used to from his IHRA days. NHRA held its Winston Invitational there in the first week of April. Patrick tried hard, but his 7.01/197.32 best (seventh alternate) failed to crack the 6.98 "bump." He also failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the eleventh alternate at 7.05/196.93. Richmond was no better as he was the seventh alternate at 6.99/197.32 for the NHRA Pennzoil Nationals. He skipped the next couple of events before showing up in Chicago at the end of May for the NHRA Fram Nationals. Unfortunately, the time away didn't help as he was the third alternate for the show at 7.04/195.59. The beat went on at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the second alternate at 7.09/194.34. Remember that all these non-qualifiers were still quicker than many factory-backed "heavy hitters" behind him on the qualifying sheets. What a little factory help might have done for the team. Topeka was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Craftsman Nationals. Once again, Patrick was close, but no cigar. A 7.09/194.46 best left him as the fourth alternate. Rick Howard photo from 1998 NHRA Pontiac excitement Nats, Columbus, Ohio. | 7.093 193.42 St. Louis 98. 7.012 197.19 NHRA Baytown TX 2 10/98. 7.015 197.28 NHRA Pomona CA 11/14/98 | Team raced NHRA exclusively from 1997 to 2003. - Eli Patrick |
