Notes: Matsubara started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #4 with a 6.93. In the opening round of competition, his off pace 7.29/210.28 lost to Jeff Courtie's 7.08. Sush was the top qualifier at the second OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.62 (Low ET). He ran 6.76/213 to beat Tom McEwen's 6.79/215 and 6.71/213.77 over Jim Paoli's 6.73/200 to make the finals against Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer owned Vega. He lost the final to Foster's 7.03. He competed at the AHRA Winternationals at Phoenix, where his 6.50/215.82 qualified #2 in the 32 car field behind Foster's 6.40. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 11.47/57.80 loss to Richard Tharp's 6.55 in the "Blue Max." Sush once again qualified #1 at the third OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.66 (Low ET), and once again, he reached the finals, but this time lost to Tom McEwen's 7.72/104.77 with an off pace 8.08/159.01. Traction was horrible at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and the team failed to qualify there. After being on such a lousy racing surface, the team was happy to be going to Irwindale for an eight-car show. But as luck would have it, Irwindale had the rocket car of Bill Fredrick's running there as well. Bill had some problems and dumped rocket fuel all over the left lane, making it useless. In the opening round, Matsubara's 6.95/213.27 won when Leroy Chadderton slipped and slipped the "Hawaiian" across the centerline. Russell Long also slid all over the track in the "Pabst" Charger in the semifinals while Sush took an easy pass down the right lane to win. The track officials decided that they ran the final with both cars making one run each down the right lane, with the car that got the lowest ET being declared the winner. Bill Leavitt was his final-round opponent, and Bill ran 6.83/206. Sush then made his run and ran 6.64/224.43 for the victory. Things returned no normal at Fresno Dragway's Winter Race of Champions. The track was fair, and there were no issues. It was another eight-car field, and Sush qualified #5, meaning that he would have to run the low qualifier, Dave Beebe, in the first round. Dave had driven the "Mr. Ed" Satellite to an excellent 6.47 in qualifying, which was over two-tenths quicker than the rest of the field. So in round one, Sush tried hard, but his 6.85/211.26 finished far behind Beebe's 6.56/219. Shortly after that (March 24), the team was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. The final race featured sixteen-car fields. A 6.91 qualified Sush in the #11 spot. In round one, he picked up to 6.84/220.04 to defeat Mert Littlefield's6.87/205. In round two, Mike Halloran shut off against him, and a 7.49/193.96 advanced. In the semifinals, his opponent Dave Uyehara had problems in the "Pure Hell" car and shut down to 13.80 while Matsubara cranked out a 6.89/215 to win. He faced Tom McEwen in the final. Tom had not run better than 6.96 in eliminations. But the "Goose" ran a 6.69/222 in the final to beat Sush's consistent 6.86/221.67. Back at OCIR on April 14 for an eight-car show, Sush led the qualifiers with the only six-second time, a 6.96. The time held for Low ET, but that was it as Sush failed to reach the final there. He was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships a week later. This was a 32 car field. He beat Stan Bowman in the opening round, and then a 7.02/212.76 beat a tire-smoking Dale Armstrong in round two. But in the third round, his 6.92/220.04 lost a close one to Mike Van Sant's 6.91/216 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. At the NHRA Division Seven race at Bakersfield, Sush set Low ET on Saturday while qualifying #1 with a 6.87. He had a flash fire on the run and had burned his neck and hands. He was treated and released and ran the car on Sunday. A 6.96/220.04 beat Mike Snively in the "Mr. Ed" car. But he smoked the tires hard in the semifinal and lost to Danny Ongais. A week later (May 26), it was back to OCIR for the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 race. Sush's 6.68 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car show, but problems arose in the first round when after doing his burnout and backing up, the car got stuck in reverse. His opponent, Gerry Glenn, soloed into round two. Sush qualified at NHRA Indy at 6.486/231.95 and then went to the semis, where he lost a close one to eventual winner Ed McCulloch, 6.480/225.00 to 6.550/229.59. The team was a 6.629/223.32 DNQ at the Ontario World Finals.

Notes: Photo from Orange County. Ran 6.091/237.46 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80. | At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR, McCulloch made his debut driving the "Super Shops" car. It was quite spectacular when the car caught fire on his first pass ever and was seriously damaged. He was OK. Ed qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.14/243.90. In the first round, he got out of shape and slowed to an 8.13 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.16. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11, but again got crossed up in the first round, and his 6.83/153.06 lost to Paul Smith's 6.11/229 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.18/230.76. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.38/209.30 when alternate Dave Condit (filling in for Don Prudhomme) broke. His 6.21/226.70 beat Mike Dunn in Bill Schifsky's Mustang II in the semifinals. In the final, McCulloch ran Sherm Gunn. Gunn had problems and slowed to a 9.95/84 while Ed got the victory with a 6.12/236.84. On May 4, Ed was in Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 points race. He qualified #1 with a 6.14/236.84, but he lost in a dual tire smoker in the first round. Hank Johnson won with a 6.74 over Ed's slightly quicker 6.72. At the third Division 6 race at OCIR, Ed qualified #2 with a 6.13/225 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.03. McCulloch's 6.35/234.37 beat a tire-smoking Jim Dunn in the first round. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen. In June, the "Super Shops" team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.25/223.32 qualified #14 in the field. He beat Tripp Shumake in round one, and a 6.26/226.70 beat Dale Pulde in round two. But in the semifinals, he had a header come loose, and he shut off, giving Tom Hoover an easy ride into the final. The team failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the NHRA Summernationals, Ed lasted until the second round, where he lost to Billy Meyer. At the NHRA Division 5 race at Bonneville Raceway, McCulloch lost in the semifinals to Rob Williams. His 6.68/208 lost to Rob's 6.44/200. We formerly listed 6.04 for this car this year. Removing until we get validation. That did not occur on the NHRA national event trail, where Ed ran the 6.091 at Indy and plenty of 6.1s. His 243.90 from the Winters was his fastest speed of the year. Ed won NHRA Indy in this car. The OCIR fire happened late in '79, not sure if it was at the MM. In January '80 ND reported a 6.08 at the Fremont Opener, where Beadle ran 5.92/244. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ran 5.698 at NHRA Maple Grove 9/85. | Ed ran 5.79/250 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.94 beat Paul Smith and in round two, a 5.73/252 beat John Lombardo's 5.76/253 in the "Blue Max." He fouled against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. He did better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A second round 5.91/254 beat Billy Meyer and in the semifinals, a shut off-25.41/31 advanced when Pulde crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the final he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and won with a 5.93/253.52. McCulloch qualified #2 at Gainesville for the Gatornationals with a 5.70/250.83. A first-round 5.75/250.69 beat Oswald, but while running Pulde in the second round, he lost a blower and the race. The same thing happened at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. There Ed qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) at 254, but against Scott Kalitta in the first round, he lost another blower. The next stop on the NHRA trail was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals on April 21. Once again Ed qualified well with his 5.79/254.38 taking the #2 spot. Oswald got crossed up in the first round, against him and McCulloch's 5.82/255.68 advanced. In round two, a 5.87 beat John Collins and in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a rod just off the line, advancing Ed into the final. In the final he met Kenny Bernstein and despite running a good 5.81/247.25 he lost to Bernstein's better 5.69/252. At Baton Rouge for NHRA's fourth national event, the Cajun Nationals, Ed slipped to a 5.90/244.16 to qualify way back in the #10 spot. He lost to Bernstein in the first round. He qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but lost to John Collins in the first round. The team got back into the groove in June, qualifying #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.77/253.52. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but a 5.88/233.57 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.79/251 in round two. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.75/254.66 qualified #5. He failed to reach the finals.

Notes: Won INDY. Silver and Black Vette. Also 6,264 232.55 at 78 Winters and 231.95 at 78 Springnationals. Ran 6.05/235.60 in big Indy win over Prudhomme. This car was sold to Dick Moritz then to Jamie Hopheimer/Whit Bazemore and to Donnie Holbrook and to Troy Ray. | McEwen started his season at the OCIR Super Bowl event in February Unfortunately, he had problems against Raymond Beadle driving the Blue Max" and shut down to a 10.54 loss in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's 6.26/232.55 qualified #5. He beat Dave Condit's 6.45/216 in the first round, with a 6.32/220 and in round two his 6.42/216 advanced when Gary Burgin fouled. It was a good old "Snake vs. Mongoose" semifinal that saw the "Goose" have problems and slow to 7.63/137 loss to Don Prudhomme's 6.41/229. He then laid low and the "English Leather" Corvette was not seen again until early May when he showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. It was a eight-car field and his 6.29/194.80 qualified #3. He improved by a tenth in round one where his 6.19/216.86 defeated Jim Moore's 6.79/164. He blasted low qualifier,Gordie Bonin in the emi-final with a 6.22/221.67 that put the Firebird's 6.41/230 on the trailer. He faced the "Snake" in the final and the two old pals had a great race that saw Don get the victory with a 6.11/238 over Tom's 6.18/217.91.The following week(May 13), he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race.A 6.20 qualified #4 but in the opening round, he extremely late 6.07/217.91 lost to Henry Harrison's 6.29/229.Shortly after that, he was at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was supposed to be a eight-car show but a field was a couple cars short.McEwen got to solo in the first round and he did, running 6.19/206.89.For some reason, he was given another solo in the semifinal and this time he shut down at 6.95. Once again he was up against Prudhomme in the final. This time the two didn't get a chance to race as Tom had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure so the "Snake" solo'ed with a 10.17 for the win. His next stop was Detroit Dragway for the UDRA North American Grandnationals. All cars ran the first round "qualifying" that had the eight lowest ET cars reguardless of winning or losing advance in the first round of actual competition.Tom set low Et with a 6.23. In the first round of actual competition, he advanced with a 6.34/194.38. In the semifinal, the car again lost oil pressure and the "Goose" had to shut it down on the line against Tom Prock. He ended the month of May at the three day Drag Racing Olympics at Union Grove. He made sure everyone knew that he was there. On Friday, May 27, he qualified for the final four with a 6.36. In the semifinal, he dropped the Pete Williams driven, "Chi-Town Hustler's" 6.32 with a 6.29. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the results were the same.Don's 6.14/229 beat his 6.19/221.67. On Saturday, he qualified for the final four with a 6.23.There were eighteen cars attempting to qualify.Tom's time was the third best. But this time the "Snake" got to him in the semifinal.Don's 6.10/236 trailed the Corvette's 6.22/223.32. On Sunday, the field swelled to twenty four cars.Tom qualified for the final four with a second quickest 6.24. He beat Bob Pickett's 6.43/225 in the semifinal with a 6.32/201.34.Low and behold, he faced Prudhomme in yet another final round. But this time, the "Snake" got out of shape and had to shut off while McEwen ran 6.28/222.22 for the victory. It was then off to St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.A 6.41/211.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He beat a tire smoking Gene Snow in the opening round with a 6.48/212.76. In the semifinal, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires but the "Goose's" 7.16 came out on top. He faced his protege, John Collins in the final. The two had a good race with the student getting the better of the teacher.Collins' 6.46 took the win over McEwen's 6.67 runner-up effort. That was followed by a trip to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The car got the award for best appearing. This car was more than just show though, and Tom proved it by qualifying second with a 6.16/217.91 behind Prudhomme's 6.07/240.These two would meet in the final(what else is new).McEwen opened up eliminations with a 6.31/216.86 over Bonin's 6.49/223.A second round 6.25/215.31 dispatched Billy Meyer's ailing ride.John Lombardo's 6.26/233 fell to his 6.17/230.76 in the semifinal.Problem was,Prudhomme had won his semifinal heat with a 6.07/241.Tom needed to pick up a tenth for his final round race. He didn't.The two ran almost exactly the same times they had run in the semifinals, with Don's 6.07/240 getting the win over Tom's 6.17/231.95.By this time, McEwen must have been tired of playing second fiddle to the "Snake".The week following the Springnationals(June 18), he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals. There was no Prudhomme in site as he was racig elsewhere.Tom's 6.36/219 qualified second for the eight-car field behind Snow's 6.26/216.After that, McEwen was unstoppable. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.73 in the "Blue Max" in the first round with a 6.36/219.Like a bracket racer, he ran another 6.36 in the semifinal to beat Hoover's 6.42. He went up against Johh White in the final, and even though he slowed a bit,to a 6.39/210, he won easily as White had problems and shut down. Both the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" were at Martin, Michigan on June 24 for the NHRA Division Three race.Tom's 6.18/217.91 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.09/237.But the two would never run each other.Tom's easy 6.31 in the first round beat alternate,Paul Radici. In the semifinal, his 6.22/216.86 got back by Tom Anderson's 6.20/215.The "Snake" would go on to win. Best NHRA speed was 236.84 at Ontario. Formerly listed 241.28. We need to confirm if the Goose ran that speed in 1978 and where.

Notes: Tom started his season at the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at OCIR in January. It wasn't a great start as although his 6.45/230 in the first round, of eliminations beat Kenny Bernstein, he kicked a couple of rods out of it, and he was done for the day. His next stop was the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field and, in the first round, lost to low qualifier Gary Burgin. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, McEwen qualified #4 with a 6.08/236.84. Unfortunately, he lost to Hank Johnson in the first round. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He lasted until round two before his early-shut off 7.83/110 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 6.18/227. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.23/229.00. In the first round, he had problems and shut down to a 10.62 loss to Raymond Beadle's 5.99 in the "Blue Max." In April, he was at OCIR for a 64 car show. A first-round 6.23/227.84 lost a close one to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" at 6.22/235. A runner-up finish followed that at the Seattle Opener. The race was run Chicago-style, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. It was an eight-car show, and he singled with a 6.20/225 in the first round, when Jim Moore broke. In round two, Tom lost to Colson's 6.17 with a quicker 6.15. The times qualified both for the final. The "Mongoose" smoked the tires in the final, and his 6.46/169.81 lost to Colson's 6.15/238. He went to Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race, where he qualified #3 with a 6.09/231.95. However, it rained after qualifying, and the race was postponed. He was unable to come back and run on the rain date. McEwen qualified #11 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.23/234.98. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," who advanced with a 6.21. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Tom set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49/221.14. But he had a strange first-round race with Larry Gould that saw both cars leave the track. Normally both are disqualified, but for some reason, Gould advanced, and McEwen was out. He failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shortly after that, he was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.25 qualified #3, and he got to make an easy solo in the first round, when Paul Gordon broke. The old "Hot Wheels" teammates faced each other in the semifinals, and his 6.35/227 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.28/218.

Notes: Billy qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He faced Don Prudhomme in the first round, and his 6.18/241 beat the "Snake's" 6.32/201. Meyer lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in round two. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.28/241.28, and in the first round, his 6.35/239.36 beat Dale Pulde, who smoked the tires, but a 6.37/236 in round two lost to Prudhomme's 6.31/236. He failed to qualify at the rain-postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.17/241.93 qualified #5, but an off-pace 6.68/170.45 in the opening round lost to Prudhomme's 6.21/228. Billy ran really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Although he "only" qualified #4 in the eight-car field, he made it into the final, where his 6.51 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.86 for the money. Earlier, Meyer had set a 231.36 track speed record. The following week (July 8), he won the NHRA Division 4 race at Amarillo. He did not run as well as he was used to at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.25/239.36 qualified #12, and he went down to Beadle in the first round.

Notes: Ron was at Tri-City in June for its Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships. There were eight cars there that were to make three runs each. In Ron's first race, his 6.83/204.54 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.99/181 in the "Trojan Horse."He got crossed-up and shut off in his second race against Denny Savage, who was behind the wheel of the "Chi-Town Hustler."He did well in the third race, where a 6.94/211.76 beat Richard Tharp's off-pace 7.59/153. Ron reportedly ran 6.437/206.89 at the PHR US 131 race. He qualified #11 at Indy at 6.366/229.59. He won the first round over Ed McCulloch, 6.55/214 to 6.62/222, but lost to John Lombardo in round two, 6.33/211 to 7.03/201. Ron was a DNQ at NHRA Ontario (times not reported).

Notes: The Little Hoss series started as an Eddie Pauling driven, Bakersfield winning (where they ran a string of 6.0s!) Monza in 1977. Car tossed the body in winning the final round, reemerging several weeks later as the familiar Arrow. Ran the second five in the sport, 5.973, at Irwindale's 64 Funny Cars show, but the official Five-Second Club does not recognize that run. Eddie was at Baton Rouge early in June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.50/220.04 qualified #7. His off-pace 6.91 fell to Jake Johnston's 6.61 in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Monza in the opening round. Shortly after that (June 12), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.17/210.28 qualified #4. Eddie beat Tom Hoover in the first round, but he pulled the parachute early in round two, costing him the race against Bob Pickett. Both had run 6.21, but Bob's came at 228 while Eddie's early chute resulted in a 198.67 speed. | Best NHRA times of 6.113/234.98 in qualifying #4 at Indy. The team ran the 5.97 at the 64 Funny Cars meet, Irwindale, CA, 4/09/77.

Notes: Pickett was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.588/212.26 to qualify #13. An off-pace 7.11/214.79 in the first round, lost to Tom Hoover's 6.77/201. In March, he won the Irwindale Fox Hunt race. A final round 6.64/218.97 got him the victory over Mike Van Sant's 6.71/218 in the "Hawaiian." He was running really well at OCIR on April 6 for the AHRA Grand American race. Bob beat Tom McEwen in the first round, with a 6.80/218.44, while in round two, his 6.87/215.31 beat Joe Lee. He faced Ed McCulloch in the semifinals, but the "Lil Demon" broke, and McCulloch soloed into the final. At the 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at Irwindale, Pickett lost to Lee's 6.75/206 in the first round, with a 6.87/221. He got back in on the "break rule" and beat Don Schumacher in round two with a 6.75/214.28. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in round three. He was back at Pomona on May 5 for the NHRA Division Seven opener. His 6.58 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Pat Foster's 6.54. But in the opening round of competition, his 6.97 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.96. Bob ran 6.611/217.91 at Indy and 6.494/214.79 at Ontario. The team also ran 6.56 at Irwindale.

Notes: John was at Beech Bend on August 23 for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. A 6.22/208.81 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.18/215.31 in the opening round to beat Rick Nutt, but in the semifinals, his 6.27/217.39 lost to the eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.19/217. The "Sting" ran really well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. John's 6.082 qualified #15, and he beat Tim Grose and Al Segrini in the first two rounds before falling to Raymond Beadle's 6.02/249 in the semifinals. Pott ran 6.23/229 in the loss. John was at Bristol on September 13 for the IHRA US Open. He qualified well in the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.11 beat Roy Harris' 6.44. In the semifinals, a 6.07/234.98 beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde. He faced Paul Smith in the final, and although John only ran 7.67/135.54, he still won the race when Smith crossed the centerline and was disqualified. The following week (September 20), he was at Houston International for the NHRA Western Regional. Only five cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car show, and John's 6.28/227.27 qualified #2. Surprisingly, in the first round, an off-pace 6.99/143.08 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.60/213. John's 6.082/236.22 at Indy were his best NHRA times of the year.

Notes: Prudhomme started the year with his venerable Arrow but debuted this Plymouth Horizon in April at OCIR for the 64 car show. In the opening round, Don ran a track record 5.96 at 238 to beat John Force. He made it into the final against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." The "Snake" got crossed up and shut off while Colson ran 6.48 for the win. On April 20, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.94/238.72, but rain interrupted the race, and Don could not run on the rain date since he chose to go to Baton Rouge instead for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He would've been better off at Fremont since his best of 6.21/235.60 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge. On May 17, he was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Once again, he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.03/238.09. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.18. He then went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. Prudhomme ran well, hitting a 6.04 in the semifinals over Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the final, he set Low ET with a 5.97 at 235.60 over Colson's 6.70/229. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.21/231.95 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Colson. Don improved to 6.08/222.77 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in round two, advancing Billy Meyer into the semifinals. He did not compete at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, choosing to run the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas instead. Don qualified #1 with a questionable 5.92. He then ran 6.19 and 6.28 over Kenny Bernstein and Tom McEwen to reach the final, where he faced John Collins. A final 6.18/229 gave him the victory over an up-in-smoke Collins at 7.24. He was back on the NHRA tour for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown in July. Don qualified #3 with a 6.02/237.46. An opening round 5.99/240.64 beat Bernstein, and he made an easy single in the second round when Dale Pulde was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Prudhomme faced Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max" in the semifinals, and Don's 6.05 beat the "Max's" ailing 6.85. Once again, he found himself in the final. There he faced and beat Meyer's 6.58/192 with a 6.10/238.05. Prudhomme was back at Union Grove in July for the NHRA Division 3 race. While he didn't reach the final, he did set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.15. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42. This time, the "Snake" really had to work for it. He qualified #2 with a 6.20 behind Pulde's 6.12 in the "War Eagle." A first-round 6.23 beat Gary Burgin's 6.44, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Len Imbrogno could not show. The final came down to Pulde and Prudhomme. Don got the win with a 6.26, stopping Pulde's out-of-shape run. August started with Prudhomme winning the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. The "Snake" did not have the quickest car (Tom Hoover did at 6.05), but he was the most consistent, running 6.15 and 6.14 (at 232.55) to reach the final. There, he faced Billy Graham, and a 6.13/231.93 gave him yet another win over Graham's 6.25/219. He did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was runner-up to McEwen at the Funny Car Nationals at US 131. There, his final round, 6.31/206.89 lost to the "Mongoose's" 6.17/233. On August 18, he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Don was the only 5-second qualifier with a 5.95 (Low ET). In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover's 6.52 in the "Pacemaker" Firebird. Don was reinstated when officials found out that Hoover was driving two cars. It didn't do Prudhomme much good as he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bill Spevacek. He had problems with his race car transporter on the way to Indianapolis and had to be towed in. He was still able to run a 6.07/234.37 to qualify #10. In round one, he beat Colson with a 6.12/234.98, but a second-round 6.27/226.75 lost to Meyer's 6.18/234. Ran 6.07/236.22 NHRA Indianapolis 9/80.

Notes: Don started the year at the AHRA Winternationals where he debuted his new Horizon. He was also debuted his new sponsor, Pepsi, which replaced the Army that had backed him since '74. It was an eight-car show and Prudhomme qualified #4 on the tricky track surface with a 6.89/213. He faced Tom Hovland in the first round, and they both smoked their tires, but the "Snake" got the win with a 7.32 over Hovland's 8.54. In the semifinals, Prudhomme again lit up the tires and lost to the eventual winner of the event, Kenny Bernstein. Don qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.06/239.99, but lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" who ran 5.93/245 in the semifinals when he had tire shake and had to shut down. After the first two races of the year, Don had the engine moved back about two inches in the chassis to combat his early season traction problems. He went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and in qualifying #1 set NHRA records of 5.926/247.25. Don dumped Billy Meyer in the first round, with a 5.97/245.23, but in round two against Bernstein, he got crossed up and crossed the centerline. He then went to State Capitol for a best of three match race against Tom Hoover on March 22. He won the match hitting a best of 6.25/211.76 while Tom's best was 6.45/201. On April 26 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car show. Don qualified #5 with a 6.11. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Beadle and won with another 6.11 when Beadle lost a motor. Unfortunately, the "Snake" broke in the semifinals advancing Bernstein into the final. Early in May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 and made it into the semifinals before losing to Hoover. A week later (May 9), Prudhomme won the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.02/241.93 in the eight-car show. In round one, a 6.19/238.09 beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett and in the semifinals, he beat Jim Dunn's 6.32/214 with a 6.17/238.72. In the final he ran Craig Epperly in Don Tate's "Superstar." Craig overpowered the track and smoked the tires and Don got the victory with a 6.56/227.84. Back on the AHRA trail, he was at St. Louis for the Gateway Nationals on June 7. He qualified #2 with a 6.37/231, second to Hoover. A first-round 6.34/233 beat Glenn Mikre's 6.76/231 in Bill Schifsky's Citation. In the semifinals, a 6.26/238.10 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat John Collins' 6.36. In the final, he lost to Hovland's Corvette. At the NHRA Springnationals, Don qualified #2 with a 6.09/239.99 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, he lost to Collins in the first round, with an off-pace 6.56/175.78. At the end of June, he won the AHRA Nationals at San Antonio, Texas. A 5.97/242.58 qualified #3 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Prudhomme stopped Epperly in round one, with a 6.07/242.58. Dale Pulde shut off in round two and Don's 6.11/225.56 advanced. In the semifinals, his 6.19/230.76 beat Bernstein's 6.24/233. In the final he met a strong running Dale Armstrong. Dale lost a motor and the "Snake" won with a 6.07/241.28. Prudhomme made it two in a row on the NHRA trail when he also won the Grandnationals in Canada on August 9. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with a 6.15/238.09. This meant that he had to face low qualifier Meyer in the first round. Don was up to the task as he thumped a tire-smoking Meyer with a 6.24/236.22. In the semifinals, Armstrong also smoked the tires against him and his 6.33/227.27 advanced into the final. There, both he and Bernstein had traction problems, but Don recovered first and his 7.18 took the victory. He didn't do so well at the AHRA Western Nationals although he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.12. In the first round, he ran a sub-par 6.43/214.71 that lost to Jim Dunn's 6.25/224. A week later (August 23), AHRA held its World Finals at Spokane and Prudhomme won. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.97 that beat Gary Densham. In the semifinals, he blew an engine on a 6.51/215.82 solo when opponent Mardy Maltais was unable to show. With a new engine installed for the finals, Don once again dipped into the fives with a 5.98/239.36 that beat Gordie Bonin's 6.09/236 for the title. He had more engine trouble at the US Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #2, behind Beadle. He made it into the second round before he lost his engine and the race to Fuzz Miller. Surprisingly, Prudhomme failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. His best of 6.17/234.37 was good for the third alternate. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #2 with a 6.00/238.72 at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals.
