Notes: Hoover failed to qualify at Pomona for the season-opening Winternationals. His best of 6.25/218.55 was a bit short of the 6.08 "bump." Tom ran much better at the Gatornationals after having a top-end fire during qualifying. Gene Snow helped tune the car, and Hoover ran a 5.86/247.93 to qualify #13. When Rick Johnson fouled, he took it easy with a 7.23/126.19 in the first round. But in the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein. He qualified last (#16) in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 6.06/234.49, and his 6.12/224.66 in the opening round fell to Billy Meyer's 5.99/250. Shortly after that, Tom was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and he reached the finals, where he would face John Force. John had to shut down with a water leak, and Hoover soloed for the victory. In June, he went to Brainerd for the Crown Auto Funny Car Championships. This was another eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.94/240 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo, who was driving the "Blue Max." He improved to 5.88/251.31 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough to beat Mark Oswald's 5.84/247 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He came back out later to run a consolation race against Tom McEwen. Hoover's 5.87/252.45 beat the "Mongoose's" quicker 5.84/250. Tom ran 6.157/239.36 at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway in August. The best times of the year were 5.740/258.17 at Indy (#7 qualifier). |

Notes: In January, Tommy Ivo debuted his new Dodge Sport at Fremont's Nitro Bowl. He ran pretty well, hitting an opening round 6.77/200.87 over Ken Silvestri, who hit the guardrail. In his second race, his 6.75 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.56, and a 6.66 in the third race beat Dale Pulde, who smoked the tires in the "Chicago Patrol." Ivo's next race was the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to qualify. He did run well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.471/224.43 qualified #8. A first-round 6.52/219.51 beat Al Segrini, who was driving Bill Leavitt's new Monza, and in round two, his 6.49/221.67 took out Topper Kramer's 6.56. But in the semifinals, he came up against Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake's" 6.45 put Ivo's 6.55/209.30 on the trailer. In April, he was at Englishtown for the Spring Funny Car Bonanza race. It was an eight-car show, and Ivo won it. He started by running 6.75/218.97 to beat Tommy Grove's 7.06, and in the semifinals, he got around Bruce Larson. That put him into the final against Ron Jackson. Ron was no slouch as he had set both Low ET and Top Speed, but he smoked the tires in the final, and Ivo picked up the victory. In May, he won the Napierville Funny Car Nationals. The traction was terrible due to rain pelting the track, and his best run was only 7.16. Shortly after that, he was at Atco Dragway for the Cars Magazine Meet. His opponent Roy Harris had a bad fire in the "Brutus" car in the first round, and Ivo advanced with a 6.71/209. He also soloed in the semifinals when Pete Hill lost a motor on the line. Tom's 6.63/194.80 moved him into the final. He faced Grove in the final, and Grove ran Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.55/229 to beat Ivo's 6.64/213.77 runner-up effort. Tommy could not make the field for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.718/213.77 best was good for the third alternate. Tommy did not qualify at NHRA Englishtown (times not reported). Raced the Dart in 1976 until late July or August, then converted to the Cordoba. |

Notes: John debuted his new Mustang II by winning the OCIR season opener with a 6.31/214.28 in the final over Jake Johnston in the Pisano and Matsubara Monza. He wasn't entered in the event, but he made a few test runs. When the field was one car short, the track asked if he would fill in. John did and mentioned to the officials not to expect much from his new car. Lombardo set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.30/200.44 over Tripp Shumake in the "Sundance." He ran another 6.30 at only 197.36 in the semifinals to beat Jim Dunn. It was a great debut. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #14 with a 6.319/217.91, but he had troubles in the first round, and shut down to 8.65 in a loss to Ed McCulloch's 6.37. On March 6, he was at Irwindale for its Night Opener. Eight cars were there, and they each made two passes, with the two overall Low ET cars meeting in the final. Lombardo wasn't close to running well enough to make the final as he smoked the tires on both his runs, losing both with times of 11.66 and 13.47. John also qualified for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.534/219.51 (#13), but he smoked the tires and lost to Shirl Greer in the first round, at 7.21/167.28. He was back at OCIR in March for the Fox Hunt Funny Car event. Twenty-seven cars showed for the sixteen-car field. John's 6.61 qualified #7. He improved to 6.51 at only 175.78 to win over Gary Densham, who broke. A second-round 6.35/207.85 beat Larry Arnold, but the car developed a small fire on the line in the semifinals, and he shut off against Chris Lane. His next stop was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven opener. His 6.51/172.41 qualified #8, and in round one, he ran 6.41/214.79 to beat Dave Uyehara's 6.44/223. He made an easy solo pass in round two, but for some reason, he was not in line for his semifinal race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. John qualified at the NHRA Springnationals at 6.545/211.26. In round one, he lost to Don Prudhomme, 6.26/209 to 6.504/226.13. John qualified #12 at Indy at 6.356/226.70. He lost again in round one, this time to Gary Burgin, 6.12/221 to 6.597/186.72. John qualified #12 at Seattle as well with 6.352/226.13 numbers. Ed McCulloch was his roadblock in round one, at this race, taking a close 6.27/231 to 6.29/220.04 decision. John again failed to get past the first-round at the World Finals. He qualified #14 at 6.428/216.34 and lost in round one, to McCulloch again, 6.41/228 to 7.72/118. John switched from the Donovan Hemi to a Milodon early the following season and immediately showed improvement. We originally listed 6.26 for John this year. Can anyone confirm that he ran that time? |

Notes: Photo from 1982 US Nationals. John was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 5.94 qualified #5. Unfortunately, in round one, he lost to Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian." In August, he was at OCIR's Summer Showdown event. Ten cars ran the first-round, with the eight lowest ETs advancing into the semifinals. John easily made it as he set Low ET of the meet with a 5.91/233 to beat Mert Littlefield. He advanced with a 6.11/222 over Craig Epperly in the semifinals, who was driving for Joe Pisano at this race. In the final, he faced Billy Meyer. Both had problems, but Meyer's wasn't as bad as his 8.21 beat Lombardo's 10.17 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and he smoked the tires to a 6.16/227.27 in the first round, that lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 5.89/242 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." John also lost in the first round, at the NHRA US Nationals. He ran 5.94/249.30 to qualify #10, but he lost to Tom Anderson in the opening round. NHRA ran the Golden Gate Nationals at Fremont, and the Pro classes were just eight-car shows. Lombardo out-qualified many "big name" drivers with his 5.97/240.64 (#5). But an off-pace 6.17/214.28 in round one, lost to Hawley's 5.85. | Won the 8-car, open nitro Funny Car field at the June Nitro Championships. With CC Amos Satterlee on board, he won the event, 6.10/212 1st round and a 2nd round 5.98 after two burnouts. I don't remember who Lombardo beat in the June OCIR final, although at that Summer FC-TF race, he was among three 5-second FCs in the open-8 car field. The other 2 were Meyer and Pisano/Epperly, who made about 3 afternoon passes. Tire shake got both cars in the final. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Dennis Fowler was one of the first to run the new Monza bodies in Funny Car competition. Driver Russell Long had it out in January at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where the team failed to qualify. They also failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, running best times of 6.58/199.11. The car took some time to sort out, but it ran well at an eight-car show at Irwindale in March. Long drove it to a 6.59/220.04 to beat Gordie Bonin in the first round, and he soloed in round two with a 6.52/219.51. This race had all cars run two rounds, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. As good as his runs were, they were not good enough to make the runoff. Sundance was one of the cars chosen to run on the Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour. At the Englishtown Cavalcade race, Long’s 7.23/179.28 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 6.97/211 in the first round. In July, Atco held a Cavalcade race, and Russell's troubled 9.17 lost to Bourgeois' 7.20/221 in the opening round. Portland held its big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, and all the members of the Coke Cavalcade drivers raced there. The format was three rounds, and then the two lowest ET cars met in the final. Russell ran 6.52/217.39 in his first race to beat Richard Rogers' 6.98/203, but after that, the car broke, and he could not make any more runs. He followed the Northwest swing to Edmonton, Alberta, for the Funny Car Spectacular event. In the first round of racing, his 6.95/182 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.56/200 in the "Blue Max." A 6.96/142 got him a win in round two when Roger Lindamood shut off early, and in the last round, he ran an easy solo when Al Bergler's Mustang II broke. The following week found the "Sundance" team at Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was another 32-car show with the two Low ET cars going to the final. In Russell's first race, the car got completely sideways, and he shut off to a 10.86 loss against Fred Goeske's 7.03. An off-pace 7.39 lost to Mike Miller's 6.48 in the "Green Elephant" in his second race, and the track's 11:00 pm curfew kept him from making a third run. On the Cavalcade tour, Fremont held a Coke race that had Long run 6.60/191.48 over Gordon Mineo and 6.80/194 over Paul Radici to reach the finals. There he went up against Gary Bolger, driving the "Tyrant" Mustang of Dale Creasy. Unfortunately, Long crossed the centerline and had to lift while Gary picked up the victory with a 6.60. It should be noted that while the car wasn't consistent, it did show signs of strength with occasional 6.50s, which were very good for the time. At OCIR's Anniversary race, Russell lasted until the second round before losing to eventual winner Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Vega. His second NHRA national event of the year was the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, and he qualified #11 with a 6.639/215.31. He got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Tom McEwen. At OCIR's East-West Championships, Russell beat Don Prudhomme in his first race with a 6.74/212.26, but his engine blew on the line against McEwen in his second race. More problems came for the team at Irwindale's 32 car show in October. Long broke in the first round, giving Tom Prock a solo. The team was a DNQ at the NHRA World Finals in Ontario (times not available). Dennis was from Alaska, but he housed the car in Phoenix. | I distinctly remember Russell and this car being credited with a 6.30/230 early in the 1975 season. We talked about it when he raced at the Thompson, Ohio, Coke Cavalcade race (which he lost in the final to Gordon Mineo). The team was cool, allowing my then 10-year-old brother Tim to polish the car. Who can validate my old memory? - BP |

Notes: Frank was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 6.255/234.98 ended up as the first alternate. But he got into the field when Tim Grose had problems and was unable to run in eliminations. He got to make an easy 7.097/133.33 solo when Paul Smith failed to show in round one but lost to Kenny Bernstein in the second round, 5.97/241 to 6.602/218.97. That was Frank's only NHRA national event this year. It looks like the Gatornationals in the photo, but Frank did not appear on the DNQ list there. |
