Notes: Roger was at Irwindale for NHRA's Division 7 race. He set Top Speed in the first round, where his 6.71/216.86 beat Neil Leffler's 7.05/179 in Jim Terry's car. A 6.74 in his semifinal race was not enough as he lost to Gary Burgin's 6.69. Roger qualified 12th at the 1974 NHRA Supernationals with a 6.481/213.77 and lost to Dave Condit in the first round, 6.31/223 to 6.647/201.34. He also ran 6.61 at Fremont. |

Notes: Roger was at Fremont for its Nitro Bowl race in January. It was a fourteen-car field, and all cars were to make three runs. In his first race, he smoked the tires to 9.86/190.27, which lost to Jake Johnston's 6.45/212 in the "Pisano & Matsubara" Monza. In the second race, Gary Burgin failed to fire against him, and Garten soloed at 6.53. In his third heat, he had a great race that saw his 6.51 lose out to Raymond Beadle's 6.48. |

Notes: Iron block 426. Coke Circuit regular. Goeske won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Atco Dragway in May. It didn't appear as if he would as he lost his opening race against Dick Custy. Fred slept a little on the line, and his 6.67/216.86 lost to Dick's 6.74/191. But he got back into the show on the "break rule," and he lined up against Custy again in the semifinals. Goeske ran Low ET and Top Speed at 6.58/222.22 to beat Custy's problemed 8.16/128. Fred beat Tripp Shumake driving the "Sundance" car in the final, and he ran 6.63/213.27 for the victory. On May 23, he was at US131 for the NHRA Division Three race. There he finished runner-up to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Fred was at Englishtown on June 6 for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He did really well, beating a tire-smoking Al Marshall in Dale Creasy's Mustang with a 6.88/198. A 6.50 in the semifinal beat Shumake's motor blowing 6.58. In the final, he faced Roger Lindamood. Roger got out of shape off the line and shut off while Goeske picked up the win with a 6.84. He then won the Cecil Cavalcade race. There he stopped Lindamood and Dick Bourgeois in the first two rounds with times of 6.57/200 and 6.70/209. In the final, Fred stepped up to 6.52 at 209 to get the win over Shumake. On July 31, he also won the Coke race held at Puyallup, where he final round 6.61/195 got the win when Lindamood broke. The next day, the car became history as it burned to the ground in Portland. Goeske received minor burns in the fire. The car was not to be rebuilt as he was changing over to a rocket-powered car. He won Cecil County and Englishtown Coke circuit races running "6.40s." Listing 6.45 until we can get those exact times. |

He the semifinals, he received a single when Mike Miller was unable to fire the "Green Elephant." Shirl ran 6.91/161.87 to advance into the final, where he met up with Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's low qualifying Mustang (at 6.32). Both cars had problems hooking up, and Greer got the victory with a 7.03/218.96 over Neil's 7.08/220. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and failed to qualify. On March 2, he was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified on the "bump." In the first round, Greer ran a 6.90, but lost to Tom Prock's 6.67. Things went better at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #7 with a 6.48/230.17. A first-round 6.68/222.22 beat Miller, while in round two, a 6.469 got around Gary Burgin. But in the semifinals, he got out of shape and lost to Prudhomme. He won the first NHRA Division 2 race at Warner Robins, where he qualified #1 with a 6.61 and then set Low ET in the final with a 6.40/219.51 over runner-up Paul Smith's 6.41/229. He was runner-up at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Luck played a big part in his finish as a first-round 7.06 beat Rodger Hamrick's 9.61. In round two, a 7.12 beat Dale Emery's 10.42 in Gene Snow's car. All that was needed to win in the semifinals was a 9.30 when Tharp lost a rear end. But in the final, Greer's luck ran out as his 9.31/93.00 lost to Raymond Beadle's Low ET shot of 6.58 at 214 in the "Blue Max." Greer won another Division 2 race when he beat Dennis Lockaby's 6.83/199 in the final at Suffolk with a 6.66/201. Shirl lost to Denny Savage in the first round, at the IHRA Springnationals, but he set Top Speed of the meet at 224.43. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.50. He easily got past the first-round and then ran a 6.53 to beat Gordie Bonin's 6.59 in round two. In the semifinals, he met Prudhomme, and both went up in smoke, but the "Snake" recovered first for the win. He was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, but failed to reach the finals. Shirl set Top Speed of the Meet at the NHRA Grandnationals at 225.00. 6.533 216.34 losing to Prudhomme at the PHR US 131 race. |

Notes: Wrestler Dusty Rhoades sponsor. Ran his own car and drove for Larry Coogle throughout the year, with very similar times in both mounts. | Shirl qualified #11 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.081/230.17. He bettered those times in the first round, with a 6.070/231.36, but unfortunately, it was accompanied with a red light that advanced Gordie Bonin's 6.247/237.46. After qualifying #5 in the eight-car field, he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round, at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Shirl hopped into Larry Coogle's car for NHRA Atlanta. At the NHRA Springnationals, Greer ran 6.241/221.12 to qualify #11. A first-round 6.444/227.27 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.12/226. Shirl did not qualify at NHRA Englishtown at 6.750/157.61. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Shirl ran his own car and drove for Larry Coogle throughout the year, with very similar times in both mounts. | A good run came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There, a 6.104 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He beat Al Segrini in the first round, with a 6.184/232.55 before smoking the tires in the semifinals and losing to Tripp Shumake driving Johnny Loper's car. The following week (May 3), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." It didn't go well for Greer and the car slowed to 6.60/201.34 in a loss to Beadle's 6.00/233. Shirl continued to qualify well when he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where his 6.14 qualified #4. A 6.47 in the first round, lost to Paul Smith's 6.30. |

Notes: Sherm debuted his new Camaro at OCIR for the season ending NHRA World Finals on October 16. It was a good debut as Sherm qualified for the first time ever at a NHRA event with a 5.96/243.90 (#15). A 6.04 in the first round, beat Henry Harrison's 6.10, but in round two, another 6.04 lost to John Force's 5.98. |

Notes: Al qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals with a 6.63/215.31. He picked up to 6.47/222 in the first round, but it was not enough to get past Billy Meyer's quick-leaving 6.54/205. That was their only NHRA national event this year. Hanna and Gary Richards were partners on this car, which was housed and raced out of Division 1. |

Notes: Maple Grove held its Jungle Jim Memorial race on May 9, and Roy ran well. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, Roy's 6.34/234.98 (Top Speed) beat Dale Pulde's 6.50/205. He slowed to a 6.69/208.81 loss in the semifinals to Rick Johnson's 6.39/217 in the "Custom Body" car. On May 17, Roy was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.06/232.55 behind Raymond Beadle's history-making 5.99 (first IHRA 5-second Funny Car time) in the "Blue Max." Unfortunately, Harris smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Billy Meyer. Englishtown held a Thursday night show that had ten cars competing. All made two runs, with the two Low ET cars going into the final. Harris ran well but was not quite good enough to reach the finals. In his first race, he beat John Speelman with a 6.26/229.51, and an even better 6.23/231.36 beat Gary Burgin in his second race. He was back at Maple Grove for the US Funny Car Nationals in June. Eight cars were competing, with all eight making two runs. The two lowest ETs would meet in the final. Roy ran 6.23/234.37 and 6.11/237.46 to qualify for the final. He would face Burgin, who made it with a 6.05 best. It was a close final round race, with Harris' quicker 6.13/234.98 losing to Burgin's 6.14/235. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.21/231.36 qualified #7. He defeated Pulde's 6.26/234 in round one with a 6.23/233.16. A round two 6.32/235.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.17/224. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.20/234.98, but he smoked the tires and shut off to 17.70/52.75 in a first-round loss to Mike Dunn's 6.04/241 in the "Hawaiian." | At the 1981 New England Spring Funny Car Nationals, if memory serves, Roy had the car really thumping this day, running as quick as 6.12. - James Morgan |

Notes: Henry didn't run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. However, he failed to reach the late rounds there. In April, Henry was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.34/231.36, but the race was rain-delayed and Harrison was unable to run the Fremont race as he went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 6.12/234.98. This was a race where Don Prudhomme, Dale Pulde, and Raymond Beadle all failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, Henry lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Henry's best of 6.29/231.36 failed to qualify (first alternate). At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.69/203.17. A 6.89/196.64 beat Bill Chappelle in the first round, but in the semifinals, the Corvette lost high gear and he lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover. Harrison was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of June. A 6.38 qualified last in the eight-car field. He beat Gordie Bonin in a close first-round race with the "L. A. Hooker's" 6.48/216.34 defeating Bonin's 6.52/229. In the semifinals, the Corvette failed to fire and Rob Williams soloed into the finals. |

Notes: Harrison was probably best known for setting Low ET (6.54) at Indianapolis way back in '71, driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He was a hired driver driving many cars. In June, he drove John Martin's Corvette at Fremont for an eight-car show. Harrison set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 6.24/234.37. Only seven cars showed, so he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and advanced with an easy pass. He got another solo in the semifinals when his would-be opponent, Rodney Flournoy, had no car. Rodney had won his first-round race, but the car went up in flames and burnt to the ground. Henry's 7.08/142.63 advanced. He faced Sherm Gunn in the final, and his 6.44/225.99 got the victory over Gunn's off-pace 7.06/193. He was also at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and considering that drivers such as Tom McEwen, John Force, and Gordie Bonin failed to qualify, Henry's #6 qualifying 6.33/209.33 looked pretty good. Unfortunately, another 6.33/209 in the first round, lost to Raymond Beadle's close 6.32/230 in the "Blue Max." In August, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. In the first round, an off-pace 6.78/212.77 lost to eventual winner John Collins' 6.40/211. Harrison qualified #1 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 23 with a 5.98. Spokane's elapsed time and speed clocks were said to be automatically adjusted for the track's 2,430-foot elevation. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to Mike Miller. A week later (August 31), he was again a low qualifier with a 6.09 at Portland International for the AHRA Northwest Nationals. The car broke in the first round, and he lost to Bonin. At Fremont, he again out-qualified some "name" drivers at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified on the "bump" with a 6.13/233.76. Some "names" that failed to qualify included Don Prudhomme, Kenny Bernstein, Force, and McEwen. Eventual winner Mike Dunn, driving the "Hawaiian," stopped Harrison's 6.24/233.76 in the first round with a 6.16/230. The car continued to show it had power at the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Harrison continued to out-qualify the favorites, running 6.11/239.36 for the #13 spot in the field. In the first round, he improved to 5.983/241.93, but he was late and lost to Beadle's 6.00/224. | That 5.98 loss to the Blue Max was something to see. In the same round Dale Armstrong went 5.89 in the Speed Racer. Lidtke and Harrison would throw in again in '83 on the 5.8- second Lidtke-Harrison-Lidtke Trans Am. The Jam-Air, with Gary Southern, was absent at the '82 Winters. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Photo from 85 Nationals. Higley began the year with a Charger body and later got this Daytona. Ran 6.09/241.93 at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Ray attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 6.82 best failed to better the 6.08 "bump." He picked up to 6.28/213.87 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his time was good for the fifth alternate. | Higley at the NHRA Winston Finals ran 5.980/245.23, but was only good for 6th Alternate. |
