Notes: Won 1980 NHRA Winston World Points Championship, becoming the first person in history to claim drag racing's most prestigious title twice. Finished number two in the AHRA championship. Won NHRA Winters; 5.830 was Low ET. | After winning the NHRA Top Fuel points championship in '77, Shirley had two poor seasons in '78 and '79. She also lost her sponsor going into the '80 season. At the season-opening AHRA Winternationals, she qualified last in the eight-car field and lasted until the semifinals, where she lost to eventual winner Frank Bradley. Things went much more her way at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.90/246.57 qualified #6 and Shirley went on to win the event by running 5.96/241.93 in the first round, over Mark Oswald, a Low ET of the meet shot of 5.830/249.30 (tied Top Speed) beat Dave Uyehara, and in the semifinals, she ran 5.84/240.61 to defeat John Kimble. In the final, she ran her old crew chief, Connie Kalitta. They had a good race, but Shirley's 5.94/247.25 beat Kalitta's 6.03/233. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Conrad got a bit of payback when the two met in the semifinals; his 5.83/226 beat her 5.98/243.24. She also set Top Speed of the Meet with a 247.25 pass. The NHRA Gatornationals did not go Muldowney's way as she ran 5.98 to qualify #7 and lasted until round two, where tire shake forced her to shut off against Richard Tharp. It was an unusual day at NHRA's Division 4 Points race at Houston where only three cars showed for TF. Even more unusual was that Shirley failed to make the final! She lost a close first-round race against Steve Stephens when both ran 6.08 with her speed being the tops of the meet at 238.72. She qualified #2 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.94/245.23 in the tough eight-car show. A 5.92/246 in the first round, beat Bradley, but in the semifinals, she was late off the line and her 5.92 lost to Gary Beck's 6.03. Muldowney always ran well at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals and 1980 was no different. A 5.98/242.58 qualified #5 and a 6.08 in round one, beat Bradley's 6.10. In round two, a holeshot 6.02/230 beat Kalitta's slightly quicker 6.00 and a 6.04/232 in the semifinals advanced when Don Garlits fouled away Low ET of the meet at 5.93. In the final, she bested Larry Brown with a 6.04/233.16 for her seventh NHRA National Event victory. On the AHRA trail, she was at St. Louis for the Gateway Nationals in June. A 6.12/230 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but she was rudely upset by Fred Snavely in the first round. At the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, she failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Shirley got out of her mini-slump by winning the AHRA Nationals at San Antonio. She qualified #3 with a 5.97 then ran 5.97/246 in round one, and 6.02/245 to beat Garlits' 6.02/243 in the semifinals. In the final, Jody Smart fouled against her, and Shirley's 6.03/184 got the win. She then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where a 5.89/244.56 qualified #3. An opening round 5.92/235.60 beat Neil Mahr's 5.97/234, but in round two, her car broke three-quarters of the way down the track and she lost to Kalitta's tire-smoking 6.31. Late in July, Shirley was at Union Grove for the NHRA Division 3 race. A 5.96/231.95 qualified #1 for the eight-car field and she went on to win by stopping Chris Karamesines' 6.13 in the first round, with a 6.04. She set Low ET in the semifinal when her 5.90 beat Garlits' 5.99 and another 5.90 in the final beat Dick LaHaie’s 6.03. It was then off to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Shirley’s 5.99 qualified #2 behind Garlits' 5.91. The race had been interrupted by rain and her first-round opponent Kalitta decided not to stick around, so Muldowney got an easy first-round solo run. In the semifinals, she beat LaHaie. Rain again interrupted and the finals were postponed until Monday, but in the final Shirley ran Smart who had taken out Garlits in the semifinal. Shirley’s 6.03 got her the victory over Smart's 6.19. The next AHRA race was the Summernationals held at Kansas City. There was a big turnout of Top Fuel cars as eighteen attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Of course, Shirley easily qualified and it looked like she would pick up another win, but in her semifinal race against Smart, she hurt the motor on a 6.03/227.84 run and had to thrash to get it back together for the final against Garlits. Unfortunately, time ran out and Garlits singled for the win. The next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Shirley "only" qualified #4 for the eight-car show with a 5.93. But that was as hard as she ran all weekend. A first-round 6.05/226.13 beat Wayne Ernest's 6.12 and in the semifinals, a 5.95/238.72 beat Jeb Allen's 6.34. Once again, it was a Garlits vs. Muldowney final and it couldn't have been any closer as Muldowney's holeshot 5.962/231.36 beat Garlits' slightly quicker 5.961/240.00 by inches. The best times for the season were 5.830/249.30 at Pomona.

Notes: Won 1981 AHRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, becoming the first and only woman to do so. Also won Bakersfield March Meet, becoming the first and only woman to do so. | Shirley started the '81 season at the AHRA Winternationals, where she qualified #5. In the first round, a 6.37/218 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.35/218. She then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where 40 Top Fuel cars tried to get into the sixteen-car field. A 5.84 qualified #3 and a first-round 5.92/241 beat Frank Bradley (5.94/241). In the second round, a 600-foot wheelstand cost her the race against Marvin Graham. It was on to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet that, as mentioned above, she won. Shirley ran a 5.91/243.90 to qualify #3 again, and a first-round 5.96 beat her former partner Connie Kalitta in the first round. In round two, a 5.94/240.64 dispatched Mark Prudhomme's 6.19/213. In the semifinal, she met Jerry Ruth, and a 5.84 (Low ET) got her into the finals. A 5.92/245.90 (Top Speed) won the event over Doug Kerhulas. She backed that win up with another win a week later at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Shirley qualified #4 with a 5.76/247.93. A first-round 5.80/241.28 beat Mark Oswald and a second-round 5.74/250.00 beat Kalitta. In the semifinals, a 5.79/244.56 took out Dave Settles. In the final, she met strong competition in the form of Jody Smart. It was a good race, but Shirley's 5.81/247.25 prevailed over Smart's 5.89/245. On April 5, she ran at the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley, where a 6.03/225.56 qualified #1. She met Smart again in the first round, and a 6.10/222.77 beat his tire-smoking 6.38/233. Unfortunately, it was her turn to smoke the hides in the semifinal against Gene Snow. On April 26, she was running in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.83 qualified her #4 in the eight-car field. A 5.89/238.72 beat Kerhulas' 5.91/240 in the first round, and a 5.97/236 beat Jeb Allen's 6.00/241 in the semis. Another win came her way in the final when Muldowney's 5.95/239.36 beat Terry Capp's quicker 5.91/238. On May 3, she took another win at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. She qualified #3 and beat Don Garlits in the semifinal before beating Chris Karamesines in the final. Another win came on May 17 at Cayuga Dragway Park in Canada for an NHRA Eastern Regional. There, she set Top Speed at 239.36 before running a 6.21/231.36 in the final over Kerry Sweigart's 6.29/225. Shirley skipped over the following two NHRA events, not going to either the Cajun Nats or the Mile High meet in Denver. Early June found Shirley racing at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.10/236.85 qualified #2. A first-round 6.19/229.60 took care of Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car, and in the semifinal, a 6.24/234.99 beat Fred Snavely. In the final, she faced #1 qualifier Garlits. Garlits ran the track's first five in the final, a 5.99/237.47 to win over her 6.23/203. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.90/214.28 qualified #4. A first-round 5.92/243 beat Marvin Graham, but David Pace beat her in the semifinal with a 5.92. Shirley tried hard setting Top Speed at 244.56. She won the AHRA Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, setting Low ET at 5.84 in the final while beating Garlits. In July, at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the combination just wasn't there. She lost two engines in qualifying before making the field with a 5.86/238.72 (#11). She then wounded another engine in her first-round loss to Smart. At the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals, a 5.97/243.24 left her outside the eight-car field (#4 alternate). In August, Shirley competed at the AHRA Western Nationals at Bonneville Raceway. She qualified #4 and beat Karamesines in the first round, with a 6.05/243. She got a free ride into the final when Joanne Reynolds broke. In the final, she met Ruth, who laid down a 5.90 (Low ET) at 236 to beat her 6.03/231. It was the same outcome at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Ruth stopped Muldowney again in the finals with a 5.74/238, beating her 5.89/202. Times were way low at this meet due to questionable clocks at Spokane. She had Top Speed at the US Nationals, qualifying #8 with a 5.74 and another 5.74 in the first round, beat Oswald (5.84), but she lost in the second round.

Notes: Shirley started the year at OCIR in Jan for a best-of-three-match race against Don Garlits and his new "sidewinder" car. She won the first race with a 6.04/218, but in the second race, she shut off to 6.58/136.77 while Don won with a 6.52/215. In the tiebreaker, Muldowney won the match with a 6.25/192. Garlits got some revenge at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He was using his "regular" car and qualified #1 with a 5.85, with Shirley a tenth behind at 5.95. Muldowney ran 6.05 and 6.03 to reach the final to run Garlits for the title. Don had run 5.94 and 5.79 to make the final, so he obviously had a performance advantage. Shirley knew this, and she pushed the "tree too hard and fouled in the final. Another runner-up finish came at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.73/243.24 qualified #3, and she repeated that number in the first round, with a speed of 244.56 to beat John Kimble. In the second round, her 5.76/243.90 took out Jerry Ruth's 6.00/234, and a semifinal 5.87/242.58 beat Jeb Allen. She faced Dick LaHaie in the final. Unfortunately, Shirley lost fire, and LaHaie soloed for the win. Shirley then went to Sacramento for its Winter Classic race, where she set a 5.79 track record. Her speed on the run was 241. A 5.78/245.23 qualified #6 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. She then beat Mark Niver in the opening round. That was followed by a 5.82/242.58 defeat of Jody Smart's 6.01/241 in round two. She then dropped Connie Kalitta in the semifinal with a 5.90/233.76. It was Garlits facing her in the final, and Shirley's 5.82/240.00 easily covered Don's 6.18/231 for the victory. Shirley won the 1982 WINSTON WORLD POINTS CHA/MPIONSHIP, becoming the first person in history to claim drag racing's most prestigious title three times. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.570. She also met Lucille Lee in the first all-female final round in NHRA history, with Muldowney taking the win, 5.711 seconds at 233.16 mph to Lee's 6.052 at 207.85. Shirley's 5.711 to 5.794 win over Mark Oswald at 1982 Northstars was the quickest side-by-side run in history at that point. The 5.570 to 5.669 over Connie Kalitta at Indy 1982 reset the quickest side-by-side mark.

Notes: Mark ran 5.985/229.00 at 1982 NHRA Winternationals, but that time was good for the fourth alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.941/241.93 qualified #14. He lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round, when he shut off to a 9.80. The team qualified #5 at the Cajun Nationals with a 5.882/247.25. Mark lost to Shirley again in round one, 5.83/234 to an 11-second shutoff. That was the team's last NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Used comp number 7710 also. Photo from 1979 US Nationals. Car still has former driver Kelly Brown's #1 on cowl. | The Donovan did pretty well in competition in Top Fuel in the '77-'78 seasons, but in '79 the writing was on the wall. But there were still some strong holdouts who refused to switch. Who could blame Jim Brissette and Mike Drake? After all, the team had won the NHRA points championship in '78 with Kelly Brown behind the wheel. He had also won four major NHRA events along the way. And so, with Bob Noice taking over the driving chores, the team entered the '79 season with hopes for a repeat. Things started really well when Bob qualified the car #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.96. He had one of only two Donovan powered cars that qualified. Noice beat Larry Dixon in the opening round and a second round 6.09 beat former driver Brown’s 6.15. In the semifinal, a 6.03/225.56 beat Shirley Muldowney's slightly quicker 6.02/243. Bob went into the final where he faced Rob Bruins. Rob was driving Gaines Markley's car and had run 5.85 in his semifinal race. But in the final, Rob was shut off on the line with a fuel leak and Noice ran a solo 11.37 for the victory. Brissette had won the Winternationals for the second year in a row. But after a great start to the year, the team was disappointed at Gainesville where they failed to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals. Brown had driven the car to a runner-up finish there the season before. The NHRA Cajun Nationals was the next NHRA event on the schedule and it was postponed by rain from April 29 to May 2. Noice qualified #7 in the eight-car field and he lost to Johnny Abbott in the first round. Things didn't go to well at Columbus either for the NHRA Springnationals where they failed to qualify. This was a race the Brissette and Drake team had won in '78. The next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car field so qualifying was tough, but Noice ran 6.11 to qualify #4. But in round one, he lost to Connie Kalitta. The team made a stop at Amarillo for the NHRA Division 4 race where Noice beat Pat Dakin in an all-Donovan powered Top Fuel final. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Bob’s 6.03/240.64 qualified #13. A slightly better 6.02 in round one, lost to Dave Uyehara's 5.92. The team then traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The eight-car field had six cars qualify in the fives and Noice (#5) was one of them. His speed in qualifying was 236.84. He soloed in the first round, when low qualifier Brown broke. But a semifinal 6.07 lost to eventual winner Richard Tharp's 5.88 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. After that, the team stopped off at Richmond Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division 2 race. The field was short as only six cars showed. Bob ran 6.21/195.65 to beat Ed Moses' 6.61/205 and then got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal where he ran 6.22 to advance. He faced Bobby Hilton in the final and Bobby got the win with a 6.12/230 over Noice's 6.36/182.18. Somewhere along the way to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals the car picked up a lot of power as Noice ran 5.88/248.61 to qualify #9 in the 32 car show. He had by far the quickest Donovan in the field. Bob beat Junior Kaiser in the first round, but in round two, the car lost fire on the burnout and Tharp soloed into round three. Only one Donovan made the sixteen-car field at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals and it belonged to Noice. His 5.96/218.44 qualified #10. But Bob must have been tired, as he took a little nap on the line in the first round, before he woke up and ran 6.15/230.76 only to lose to Hank Johnson's 6.23/227. The NHRA World Finals was held at Ontario Motor Speedway and Bob qualified #15 there with a 6.18/235.60. But his season ended badly - he was faced against Uyehara in the opening round. After fouling at the start, he blew the engine half-way down the track, slowing to 6.86/177. All in all, it wasn't that bad a season as they finished fifth in the NHRA season long points chase, but it didn’t compare to 1978.

Notes: Jerry attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.040/237.46 best was good for the fourth alternate. Notes: Gary was at Sacramento late in June for the NHRA Western Regional race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.88/235.61. In the opening round of eliminations, his off pace 6.38/197.81 fell to Jim Murphy's 6.18/231. The teams' 5.793/250.69 was the quickest DNQ in history at Indy. The speed made him the 8th member of the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. They were the second alternate at the Golden Gate Nationals at 5.938/233.16. Those were Gary's only two NHRA national events of the year.

Notes: Finalist at the 1983 Golden Gate Nationals. Amazingly, Gary's 5.549 was the second quickest run to Gary Beck's incredible 5.391 world record. It was the quickest side by side race in history. Gary's best speed was a 250.00 at Indy.

Notes: Jack failed to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals. He was attempting a qualifying run on Friday, and he went into hard tire shake that knocked him unconscious. The car continued down the track at idle, going into the opposite lane and hitting the guardrail. Jack was OK, and the car wasn't heavily damaged. Things went much better at the Gatornationals, where his 5.76/240.00 qualified #6. He had problems in the first round, and slowed to a 7.73 that lost to Gene Snow's 5.95. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, a 5.85/238.09 qualified on the "bump spot" of the eight-car field. He lost to Richard Tharp in the first round. He qualified #8 in the next eight-car show he ran as well. That came at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Jack ran a 5.91 for the spot. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round, again, this time to Connie Kalitta. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified last for the eight-car show, and in the opening round, he lost to Denver Schutz. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.05/229.57.
