Notes: The T-Bird debuted at the Grandnationals in Sanair at the end of June. Only fifteen cars showed, and Ron's 5.82/252.38 qualified #7. In the opening round, he had problems and shut off against Mark Oswald. The following week, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The car was still unlettered and wearing black primer. He qualified #14 and ran an easy 5.97/249.30 in the first round to advance when Kenny Bernstein could not show due to a fire he had in qualifying. In the second round, Ron lost to Tom McEwen. At the NHRA Summernationals, Correnti qualified #13 with a 5.81. He had problems in the first round against Dale Pulde and shut off. His next stop was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Ron qualified #13 with a 6.13/241.93 in the thin air. In the first round, he lost to Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." This car's career ended at Edgewater during the IHRA Summernationals in August. It caught fire during qualifying, and the T-Bird body was destroyed. Ron was not hurt. IHRA number was 154. We formerly listed 5.71 for this car, but 5.779/253.52 were his best NHRA national event times at the World Finals. We are removing the 5.71 until we get confirmation.

Notes: Was also sponsored by High Performance World | If memory serves me correctly, this was Joe Pisano's '83 Camaro, formerly driven by Tripp Shumake, purchased by Cowin, then lengthened (with Pontiac nose & tail) while in the US in 1985. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Made a splash on the second half of the NHRA national event trail in 1985: Indy - #11 qualifier at 5.770/257.43. Lost a close one on a holeshot to John Force in round one, 5.835/253 to 5.813/253.80 (MOV - .015 seconds, about 5.5 feet). Maple Grove - #10 qualifier at 5.781/255.24. Shut off to a 14-second run against Dale Pulde in round one. Seattle - #10 qualifier at 5.924/247.25. Shut off to a 15-second run against Force in round one. Pomona World Finals - #7 qualifier at 5.776/257.87. Put a big holeshot on Al Segrini in round one, but Al came around him for the win, 5.760/248.48 to 5.829/243.50 (MOV .042 - about 16 feet). We need to confirm where 5.67/266 numbers came from. I remember them, but it was not on the 1985 NHRA national event trail. The 266.27 was reported in an Aussie drag mag in December 1985. Probably an IHRA national event.

Notes: Gary did all the work to create the mold for the first Datsun body but needed Ken Cox's help building it. After the first body had been pulled from the mold and was curing, Cox sold it to John Collins. So, after all that work, he didn't get to debut the first 280Z body! Densham was at OCIR on May 17 for the third NHRA Division Six race. He qualified on the "bump" with a 6.38. In the opening round of eliminations, he and Tom McEwen both smoked the tires with the "Goose" recovering first to score a 6.61/181 win over Gary's 7.64/149. Gary attempted to qualify at one NHRA national event, the World Finals. He was the last DNQ (times not reported).

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Gary was first alternate at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 6.09/241.15 best. He also failed to qualify with a best of 6.22 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March (May) Meet. But when Steve Chrisman's car broke in qualifying, Gary was inserted into the field. He beat Gary Cochran in the first round, and in the semifinals, a 6.09/238.72 beat Denny Savage. In the finals he faced the "Hawaiian" driven by Rick Johnson. Gary ran a final round 6.34/234.98, but lost to Rick's 5.94/241. On April 6th, he was at Firebird Raceway for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight-cars made two runs with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Gary beat Ron Fassl in his first race with a 5.99/237.46 and a 6.03/231.95 beat Rick Johnson's 6.02/252 in the "Hawaiian" in his second race. The only other car to run in the fives was John Force, but he exploded a supercharger and was unable to run so Rick's 6.02 made the final. Once again Densham faced Johnson and once again the results were the same with Gary's 5.98/238.09 getting the victory over the "Hawaiian's" 6.06/252. The first NHRA race he ran after the Winternationals was the Mile High Nationals in July. There he qualified #14 with a 6.29/222.22. However, he fouled away a 6.34 in the first round, against Ed McCulloch.

Notes: Dunn ran the old Satellite the first half of the year. He ran it at the Northwest National Open WCS, but this car debuted brand new, in grey primer, at the June round-robin Funny Car meet, still putting on hose clamps. Jim holeshot Nick Harmon hazing off the line in the first round, 6.97 to 6.95. New at the June SIR Funny Car event, arrived shortly before 6 pm eliminations. Doner said the Dunns drove 24 hours straight from California to get there in time. I didn't know their GMC Suburban going to get the car was a Diesel and thought something was wrong with the engine. - Joe Moore | Jim qualified 6th at the Fallnationals with a 6.890 and won the first-round when Dennis Geisler didn't show. But Jim crossed the centerline against Dale Pulde in the second round and was disqualified. That was his only NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Jim failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Elroy Airport for an eight-car show shortly after that. It was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was rough, to say the least. Jim qualified #2 with a 7.00/211.76. A 7.12 in the first round, beat Jack Maroney, while his 7.10/217.38 (Top Speed) beat Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. He faced Craig Epperly in the final, and Dunn's vast experience from years of racing on poor tracks made the difference as he ran 7.01/216.86 to pick up the win over Epperly, who smoked the tires and lost. As mentioned, he qualified well at the Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, he got crossed up against Bob Pickett in the first round, and shut off. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals to run an eight-car show at OCIR being run the same day (March 15). Dunn qualified #1 with a 6.24/229.59 and went on to win, stopping Rodney Flournoy in the final. He had also set Low ET at 6.18. On April 5, he was at Green Valley for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. He qualified #1 with a 6.19/227.84, but he smoked the tires in round one, and lost to Shumake. OCIR hosted the next Western Regional, and Jim qualified #3 for the race with a 6.28/229.00. In the first round, Sherm Gunn had problems and shut off while Jim took it easy with a 7.03/196.50 to advance. He lost to the meet's eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Dunn's 6.32/214.79 was no match for the "Snake's" 6.17/238. At the end of June, he was at Sacramento for another Western Regional event. His 6.26/214.29 qualified second to Gordie Bonin's 6.24/236. These two would work their way into the final together. In the opening round, Jim's 6.28/218.96 defeated John Force's 6.87/181. In the semifinal, Hank Johnson's 6.48/221 lost to his 6.25/211.27. Both he and Bonin had been close in times during eliminations, with Bonin having a slight edge. It stayed that way as Bonin's 6.16/237 got the victory over Dunn's 6.19/213.38. Notes: Mike qualified #5 at Pomona with a 6.15/234.98. and in round one, he beat Gary Burgin's 6.47/229 with a 6.21/236.22. In round two, he was on the receiving end of Raymond Beadle's track record 5.93 in the "Blue Max." Mike lost with a 6.38/231.95. The team did not go to Bakersfield for the March Meet, choosing to run at Sacramento instead. Mike really opened some eyes when the car made a tire hazing 5.84 pass. This was the quickest time ever for a flopper, and it backed up the run Mike's dad, Jim, made in January at OCIR when Jim had driven the "Hawaiian" to a 5.85 while covering for his son behind the wheel. Mike's next pass at Sacramento was 6.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.10/231.95. His first-round 6.064/233.76 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.99/238. The team did not compete at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, and all the Funny Car teams boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals that year. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.12/229.00 qualified #4. In the opening round, he slowed to an off-pace 6.41 that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.31. Mike qualified #6 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.02/243.24. Roy Harris smoked the tires against him in round one, and he advanced with a 6.04/241.28. In the second round, both he and Beadle smoked the tires hard, and Mike recovered first to win with a 6.56/231.95. Dunn blazed the tires again in the semifinal and shut off to a 9.48/79 loss against Dale Armstrong's 6.18/231. Shortly after that, he won the Byron Manufacturer's Meet, where his 6.28/227.28 stopped Burgin's 6.36/228 in the final. Yet another win followed at Brainerd Raceway for the fifth NHRA Western Regional. Mike qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/233.76. In the opening round, he then improved to 6.23/234.98 to defeat Glenn Mikres in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, a consistent 6.24/236.84 covered Tom Hoover's 6.75/222. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and Pickett had troubles and shut down while Dunn ran 6.50/234.37 for the victory. Martin, Michigan, held its U.S. 131 Funny Car Championships that had all cars make two runs and the two quickest cars meeting in the final. The "Hawaiian" was strong, running 6.12/238.72 (Top Speed) to beat Frank Hawley's 6.13/220 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the second race, Mike set Low ET with a 6.09/236.22 over Mikres. He ran Hawley again in the final, but the "Hawaiian" broke and slowed to an 11.00 in a runner-up effort to Hawley's 6.15/216. Mike won the Golden Gate Nationals. His best NHRA times were 5.933 at Indy and 243.24 at the Summernationals.

Notes: This was definitely, 24-year-old Epperly's best season in fuel FC racing. The rookie was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Craig qualified #11 with a 6.22/233.16. His off-pace 7.20/132.74 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.15/224 in the first round. The team then went to Elroy Airport Drag Strip. This was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was poor. Craig qualified #1 with a 6.99/211.76. He beat Richard Day in the first round with a 7.27/205.46. Rod Hynes got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals, so Epperly's 7.65 advanced. In the final, he faced Jim Dunn, but Craig smoked the tires and shut off to 9.86 while Jim got the win with a 7.01/216. Craig qualified #4 at Bakersfield at 6.324/231.95 and, in round one, beat Ed Moore with a 6.16/227.84. In round two, he advanced with an off-pace 6.59/202.24 when Gary Ritter had problems, but in the semifinals, something in the driveline broke, and Dale Armstrong got the win. He attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 6.20/225.56 left him as the third alternate for the show. On April 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.42/215.31 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but a 6.52/221.67 in the first round lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.17/238. He did not race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Another Western Regional race was run at OCIR on May 9. Craig qualified #4 with a 6.30/229.79. He made it to the final by beating John Lombardo with a 6.47/220.04 and Tom McEwen with a 6.17/227.27. Unfortunately, crew chief Amos Satterlee dialed in too much power in the final, and Epperly smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.01/167.91 that lost to final-round opponent Prudhomme's 6.56/227. His next race was on May 30 at Bandimere Speedway for another NHRA Western Regional event. In the opening round, his 6.64/151.51 beat Dan Lexa, but in the semifinal, his 6.62/220.58 fell to Gary Densham's 6.60/207. Then came his big win at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He had never even run there before. A 6.22/231.36 qualified #8, and he beat Tripp Shumake's 6.36/222 in the first round with a 6.27/224. He caught a good light in round two, and his 6.35/227 held on to win over Tom Anderson's better 6.32/228. In the semifinals, John Collins' 6.34/232 fell to 6.29/210. That put him into the final against the defending winner of this race, Raymond Beadle, who was driving the "Blue Max." Both ran 6.21 in the final (Craig at 231.95), but the win light came on in Epperly's lane. It was an amazing upset. After such a great race, he was surprised himself when he failed to qualify on June 27 at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. He was the first alternate at 6.61/217.92. The bad luck stayed with him the following week (July 4) when he was the first alternate for the eight-car field at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. His 6.48/215.31 missed the 6.42 "bump." Craig did finish in the NHRA top 10.

Notes: John started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 and, in the first round, lost to John Collins. John failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.47/221.13 missed the 6.45 cut-off. He managed to get into the show when the #15 qualifier, Larry Fullerton, had a bad fire and could not run in eliminations. His second chance didn't help much as an off-pace 7.23/183.67 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.31/232 in the first round. He made it into the final at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway, but he was late off the line, and his 6.62 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.66. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.35/231.95 qualified #4. Force then made his way to his first NHRA National event final by running 6.40/223.32 in the opening round over Tom McEwen's 6.43/224. A semifinal 6.52/227.27 advanced when Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" failed to fire. This put him into the final against Kenny Bernstein. Unfortunately, John's transmission broke, and he slowed to 12.27/64.01 while Bernstein picked up his first NHRA Oscar with a 6.45/233. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.34/230.17 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he improved to 6.27/220.58 to beat Bernstein's 6.36/229. But in round two, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" had a tire-smoking battle that saw Colson's 6.61/225 win out over John's 7.58/126.76. Force was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.24/231.95 qualified #11. He beat Gary Burgin in the first round, and a 6.24/231 beat a tire boiling Tom Hoover in round two. Colson also boiled the hides in the semifinals, and John's 6.29/233 advanced. It was his second NHRA final of the year, and he faced a formidable competitor in Beadle. Force slowed to an off-pace 6.46/212.26 that finished second best to the "Blue Max's" 6.37/232. John was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He failed to make the show; his 6.19/230.76 best was good for the fourth alternate. He also was unable to make the show at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. There he was the second alternate with a 6.32/224.46 best. At the NHRA World Finals held at Ontario Motor Speedway, the track was in rough shape. Force managed to qualify #6 with a 6.35/217.39. In the first round, his slower 6.70/222.22 beat Hoover's 6.65/229. A tire-smoking 7.23/217 beat Tom Ridings, who got out of shape in Joe Pisano's car in round two. The semifinals saw smoke city as both he and Tripp Shumake smoked the tires. Tripp recovered first to win with a 6.88/231 over Force's 6.99/218. John finished #8 in the NHRA Funny Car division for '79. Where was the 6.111 run? | I don't know anything about the 6.11, but Force did run 6.19 at a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race over local racer Paul Luppy in the 1st round. In the final, he beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. I recorded the cars (and ETs) on a cassette player. - Joe Moore

Notes: John Force entered the '81 season with a new sponsorship with Mountain Dew. John qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Frank Hawley and Tripp Shumake in rounds one and two before fouling against Billy Meyer in the semifinals. He qualified #9 at the Bakersfield March Meet at 6.494/220.04, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Dale Pulde. Force smoked the tires to a 6.91/168.85 that lost to Dale's 6.28/223. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Force qualified #12 with a 6.100/246.57. The speed held the national record for six minutes until Prudhomme reset it at 247.25. Unfortunately, he lost to Dale Armstrong in the first round. He failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. The Funny Cars boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals in a move to generate more money into the class. At the NHRA Springnationals, his best of 6.27/231.36 was good for the second alternate. It was a long dry spell for Force, but he finally made the show at the NHRA Western Regional at Sacramento. His 6.43/233.17 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and his first-round 6.87/181.09 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.28/218. Still, he had made the show. Things went the wrong way at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where John's 6.63/218.44 failed to qualify (third alternate). Only six cars showed at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Indianapolis in July, so there was no doubt that he would qualify. He ran a 6.41 for the #3 spot in the show. Something must have "clicked" because Ric Deschner failed to show in the first round, and Force ripped off a 6.14/238.72 single. In the semifinals, he improved even more to a Low ET and Top Speed shot of 6.06/243.90 to beat Tom Anderson. All he had to do to win was to beat Craig Epperly in the final. That he did with another strong run of 6.12 while Epperly had trouble and slowed to 9.56. The best NHRA times were 6.049 at Indy and 246.57 at Gainesville. Handouts claim 5.99/247 in 81 or 82 in Citation. | ND reported the 5.99/247 at the Sept. '81 OCIR Parade of Champions, with a full semi-trailer pit shot. I missed it by a week on leave prior to permanent duty station in SoCal. I did get the handout picture in '82, though. - Joe Moore

Notes: First year for Castrol, and first year for NHRA National event wins. Photo from Columbus 1987. Also ran 5.453 at same Ennis race. | John started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing race at Firebird Raceway on January 18. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.79, a tenth behind Kenny Bernstein. In the first round his 5.87/244.56 beat Gary Densham, who went into tire shake and shut off. In the semifinals, he improved to 5.73/247.93 to beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen. This put him into the final against Bernstein. Kenny had run 5.72 in his semifinal race and had lane choice. The two had a good race, but Force ran his best of the meet, a 5.70/252.80 to win, while Bernstein made his worse run, a 5.78/243. Things did not go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. John blew up two superchargers in qualifying, finally getting a 5.67/260.94 run in for the #9 spot in the field. He faced low qualifier Bernstein in the first round, and lost when his third supercharger exploded. Things looked to be going in the same direction at the NHRA Gatornationals when once again a blower exploded in qualifying, but crew chief Austin Coil got it figured out and John qualified #6 with a 5.66/254.59. A first-round 5.62/261.24 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two, his 5.69/257.58 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.58/265.

Notes: Pat Foster took over driving from Ron Colson in 1975. | At the 1975 IHRA Summer Nationals (Great Lakes Dragway) in July, Pat qualified number one with a 6.397. He ran 6.45/225.00 in a first-round defeat of the "Chi-Town Hustler" and eventually finished as runner-up to Raymond Beadle (Blue Max) when he smoked the tires in the final. | Pat Foster drove for a lot of teams in '75. He started the season by driving John Lombardo's car at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Just a week later, he was driving the Pisano and Matsubara car. In March, he showed up at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West race, driving for Keeling and Clayton. He drove for them until June, when Billy Meyer replaced him in that ride. Ron Colson had still been driving the "Chicago Patrol" at the NHRA Springnationals where the team failed to qualify, but the following weekend at the Byron Manufacturer's Meet, Pat was behind the wheel. All cars made two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Foster didn't make the final as a 6.99/202.70 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round, and in the second round, he had a small oil fire on the line and had to shut off. The team then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Foster qualified #12, but a 6.72 in the opening round lost to Tom Hoover's 6.61. At the third NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater, the "Patrol" showed ‘em with a 6.34 to qualify low in the four-car field. (Some divisional races had trouble filling their fields, so many shows were four-car affairs). Unfortunately, the car broke on the pass and could not run in eliminations, letting the first alternate, Don Prudhomme(!), into the show. The 6.34 held for Low ET. As mentioned above, he qualified #1 and finished runner-up at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. Things didn't go nearly as well at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Although he qualified #15 with a 6.580/219.51, he lost to Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford" in the opening round. Foster also went up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.680/216.34. An improved 6.490/221.72 beat Shirl Greer's 6.520/225.00 in the first round, but a tire-smoking 7.08/145.16 in the semifinals lost to Tom Prock's 6.457/217.39 in the "Custom Body" car. He failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he was the second alternate with a 6.43/205.94. The following week(Sept.7), Foster was at Rockingham for the US Open Championships. A 7.44 qualified #13, but in the first round, of eliminations, he improved to 6.73/214.28 to beat Kenny Safford's 6.77/194. But in round two, his 6.81/181.08 lost to Gene Snow's 6.70/215. The team did not run at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals but was at OCIR for the East vs. West Championships. There Foster had nothing but problems as he could not get a good run in as the car smoked the tires on every pass. He lost all three of his races. On October 5, he was at Irwindale's 32 car show. The race was run with all cars making two passes, and the two lowest ET cars would meet in the final. An opening round 6.58/207.85 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.63/216. In round two, he won when Neil Lefler broke a transmission. He failed to run well enough to advance into the final. DNQ at Indy US Nationals 9/75. Qualified #13 at Ontario 10/12/75 at 6.352/225.00, followed by a 6.448/222.22 to 6.600/226.13 win over Gary Cochran in round one. The unstoppable Don Prudhomme ended Pat’s day in round two, 6.140/223.76 to 6.571/196.50.
