Notes: Kalitta qualified number 4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.812/238.09. In the opening round, he ran 5.760/240.00 to beat Shannon Stuart. He lost to Jerry Ruth in round two, 5.77/240 to 6.163/182.18. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.863/192.71 qualified #12. In the opening round, he ran his dad, Conrad, and Scott shut down to a 6.290/202.24 due to tire shake while the senior Kalitta advanced with a 5.85/226. Scott then went to Darlington the following week for the IHRA Winternationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to qualify for Atlanta's eight-car show for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He was the fourth alternate at 6.054/214.28. Scott qualified #7 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with a 5.86, but he lost to Joe Amato in the first round. Scott ran 5.731/243.90 at IHRA Bristol Spring. He qualified at NHRA Columbus at 5.829/240.64 and beat Gary Beck in round one, 5.807/239.36 to 6.94/128. He lost to Shirley Muldowney in round two, 5.99/238 to 6.050/229.00. He qualified on the bump at Sanair, 5.948/234.37, and dropped a 5.70/247 to 6.024/218.97 decision to Joe Amato in round one. He qualified #6 at Englishtown at 5.747/243.24 and beat Johnny Abbott in round one, 6.886/125.52 to 13.99/57. Joe Amto got to him again in round two, 5.93/250 to 5.980/231.36. Scott qualified #11 at Indy at 5.775/245.23. In round one, he beat Larry Minor, 5.889/246.57 to 5.93/244. A consistent 5.735/241.28 took out Dick LaHaie in round two. But despite a personal best of 5.708/243.24, Gary Beck got the win at 5.58/247. Scott was the fifth alternate at Fremont at 5.957/190.67. He also was a DNQ at the World Finals (times unavailable). Ron Barrow was on Scott's crew this year. | Those Kalitta cars (5.99 Low) were a sharp nighttime pair at the last OCIR Grand Premier in Jan. '83 in a 4-car field (also Hodkinson and Howard Haight, who somehow singled for the 6.76 win). - Joe Moore | In 1982, Chuck built four identical cars, one for Connie Kalitta, Scott Kalitta's first car, George Tolon's car, and Stan Rosen's Ego Trip. - Chuck Kurzawa III, Draglist LIVE, 2/27/23

Notes: Kalitta started his '84 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event held at Firebird Raceway. His 5.62/233.76 beat Gene Snow in the final. Scott qualified #7 at NHRA Pomona at 5.691/236.84. He lost to Chuck Haase in round one, 5.81/244 to 6.978/122.95. Scott began campaigning a funny car and did not run any other races in Top Fuel on the NHRA circuit this year. | This photo is of the TF final round @ GVRC Sunday, 2/19/84. Gene Snow, driving his old '81 ACI car, is on a decent pass of 5.66 @ 245.90. Scott Kalitta is blasting out a 5.56 @ only 221.13 to crush Snow. Scott's 5.56 and the 5.52 @ 222.77 run the previous evening were the quickest runs I ever saw @ Green Valley. - Jack Muller

Notes: Chris started the season at Tucson in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He beat a tire-smoking Johnny Abbott in the first round, but his 6.24/225.56 in the semifinals lost to Shirley Muldowney's 6.03/236. Chris also raced at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.25/227.27 lost to Frank Bradley's 6.15/233. In June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Muldowney beat him in the first round, with a 5.94/230 to his 6.19/216. The lady had his number as she got him again at the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. This time it was in the semifinals. Chris' 6.10/231.36 lost to Shirley's 5.95/229. On August 15, AHRA held its Western Nationals at Bonneville Raceway. Karamesines beat low qualifier Bradley with a 6.03/219 to Frank's 6.16/230. In the semifinals, his 6.16/194.31 lost to the pink car of Muldowney that ran 5.89/233. He qualified for the field at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals, but breakage kept him out of the show, and Arley Langlo replaced him. Chris did not run the NHRA tour this year. | 6.13 242 AHRA US 30 1982 losing in the first round. (Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White

Notes: Chris started the '84 season at the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.05 qualified #6, and in the first round, he ran a 5.90/205 that lost to Frank Bradley's slower 5.96. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the sixth alternate with a 5.917/229.59. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he had help from Sid Waterman and Ron Capps. His first qualifying pass was a 6.01. That was followed by a career-best 5.74. The third run produced a 5.75. Finally, a 5.655/249.30 qualified #8 and an opening-round 5.846/240.64 advanced when Jack Ostrander shut off. In round two, Gary Ormsby's 5.65/249 beat "The Greek's" 5.801/243.90. Still, the "Greek" moved into the tenth spot in the NHRA TF points standings with this showing. Chris qualified #10 at NHRA Columbus at 5.770/238.09. In round one, he beat Frank Bradley, 5.867/193.95 to 6.00/211, but shut off to an 11-second run, losing to Doug Kerhulas in round two. Chris qualified #8 at NHRA Englishtown at 5.698/241.28 but lost a close race to Gary Beck in round one, 5.61/251 to 5.688/240.64. Chris ran 238 at ADRA West Salem, OH, on July 22. He lost to Dick Lahaie in the first round. At Spokane on August 19, his 5.53/238.72 qualified second to Don Garlits for the ADRA World Finals. He then beat Arley Langlo and Frank Bradley to meet with Garlits in the final. In the final, Chris' 5.52/255.69 snagged the victory over Don's 5.63/254. He qualified #7 at Indy at 5.654/244.56 but fell off to a 6.366/240.00 that lost to Howard Haight's 5.81/226 in round one. That was the Greek's final NHRA national event of the year. At the end of September, he was at Acadiana International Raceway for the AHRA World Finals. It was another eight-car field, and his 5.84 qualified #4. George Tolon's 6.56 in the first round fell to the "Greek's" 5.92/243.24. In the semi-final, his 5.96/240.64 defeated LaHaie's 6.18/215. Once again, he faced Garlits in the final, but this time the finish was reversed when "Big Daddy"s 5.56/256 got the win over Karamesines' 5.71/243.24. His best NHRA times were 5.654/249.30.

Notes: Doug was unable to qualify at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals. His best of 5.999 236.84 missed the 5.89 bump spot in the seventh alternate spot. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, he ran much better qualifying #2 with a 5.78/246.57. He beat Shannon Stuart in the first round, with a 5.84/237.46, and in round two, a 5.83 beat a tire-smoking Tom Ridings. In the semifinal, he lost to the eventual winner Danny Danell. His next major meet was the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 6.00/239.36 for the "bump" spot in the field. He improved to a first-round 5.87/235.60 but lost to Jody Smart's 5.79/249. He won the Fuel Wars show at Baylands in April, beating Butch Blair in the final with a 5.91 Low ET single after Blair broke. At the NHRA Springnationals, Doug qualified #8 with a 5.81/246.00. He beat George Tolon's 6.23/195 in the first round, with a 5.92/240.64. In round two, a 5.82/233.76 beat Connie Kalitta's 5.86/236, but in the semifinals, he had problems and slowed to a 6.70/180.81 while eventual winner Richard Tharp motored to a 5.87/236 for the win. In the second round, his life was changed when he ran a 5.76/247.25 in beating Chris Karamesines, but he was unable to bring the car to a stop at National Trail's short shut down area. Kerhulas crashed into the safety net hard. He suffered serious head injuries and ended up being in a coma for ten days.

Notes: John surprised a lot of people at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.86/245.90. In the first round, he beat Jeb Allen with a 5.96/241.93. In round two, a 5.91/243.90 beat Bob Noice, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to an 8.94 loss to Shirley Muldowney. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost to Gary Beck in the first round. Kimble qualified on the bump spot at the Gatornationals with a 6.12. He lasted until round two where Don Garlits' 6.02 beat his 6.08. He qualified #4 with a 5.94/212.76 at the Division 6 race at Fremont, but he lost to Gary Ritter in the first round. At the third Division 6 race at OCIR on May 17, he ran a 6.12/225 to qualify #7 in the eight-car show. He made it to the semifinals before losing to Beck's 6.04 with a 6.25. He attended the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail in June, but a best of 6.15/233.76 was good for the fourth alternate.

Notes: In 1982, Chuck built four identical cars, one for Connie Kalitta, Scott Kalitta's first car, George Tolon's car, and Stan Rosen's Ego Trip. Chuck did not run any NHRA national events in 1983. | The car was his, and Stan Rosen owned the motor. The Popular Hot Rodding event in 1983 was the last event he ran. He later sold the car to Jack Ostrander. - Chuck Kurzawa III, Draglist LIVE, 2/27/23

Notes: LaHaie attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.05/231.36 failed to qualify (first alternate). He did manage to qualify #9 at the Gatornationals, but he lost to Gary Beck's Low ET shot of 5.71/243 in the first round. Dick went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he broke in the semifinals while facing off against eventual winner Richard Tharp. He did win the Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins with a final round 6.24/204.08. The second Division 2 race held at DeSoto Memorial only had two Top Fuel cars show. So to win, Dick just had to beat Bob Strauss, which he did with a 6.33/226.13. He almost did as well at the next Division 2 race, taking the runner-up spot to Jeb Allen at Gulfport International. Unfortunately, a best of 6.15/228.42 failed to make the show (third alternate) at the NHRA Springnationals. Dick rebounded by winning the next Division 2 race at Blaney with a final round 6.24 over Bob Strauss. He got his first NHRA National event win at the Summernationals on July 13. He qualified #5 with a 5.94/233.76 and a first-round 5.99/236.84 beat Bob Simmons. In the second round, a 6.00 took out Tharp in the "Candies and Hughes" car, and in the semifinal, he beat a tire-smoking Connie Kalitta. Facing him in the final was Jeb Allen, who had set Low ET at 5.85. Dick ran a consistent 5.95/235.60 to win over Jeb's 6.04/238. The following week (July 20), Dick was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.99 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, and he lost to low qualifier Marvin Graham in the first round. At the end of July, he was at Union Grove for the NHRA Division 3 race. Dick qualified #2 with a 6.06, and in the first round, his 6.25 beat Lou Novotny's 6.47. In the semifinals, LaHaie ran 6.11 to beat Luigi Novelli. In the final, he ran Shirley Muldowney, and despite running a 6.03, he lost to Shirley's 5.90. He then went to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.02 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he ran 6.08/226.70 to take out Allen, but he lost to Muldowney again in the semifinals. We formerly listed 5.705/240.00 for Dick this year. His best times in NHRA national event competition were 5.910 in Seattle and 238.72 at Englishtown. We are listing those as his best times until we can get confirmation on the 5.70/240. Won Division 2 in 1980. Dick also a 5.991/231.36 at Sanair. When he won the Summernationals over Jeb Allen, going 238 mph, it was the first time he had driven a fueler through the lights under power since his crash in 1975! - Dick LaHaie, Racing & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14

Notes: Dick started the '82 season by qualifying third at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson Dragway in January He beat Johnny West in the first round, with a 6.12, but fell to Don Garlits in the semifinals when his 6.15 lost to "Big Daddy's" 5.79. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #14 with a 5.85/238.72. A first-round 5.88/234.98 beat Marvin Graham while a second round 5.92/233.76 got around Jody Smart. In the semifinals, he beat a tire-smoking Lucille Lee with a consistent 5.93/234.98 to advance into the final to face Shirley Muldowney. The race failed to materialize when Shirley lost fire on the line and Dick soloed for the victory with a 6.11/231.36. After winning the Winternationals, it was surprising to see LaHaie's name among the list of non-qualifiers at the Gatornationals. His best of 6.014/236.84 in qualifying left him as the second alternate for the show. Dick qualified #15 at Englishtown at 5.839/238.09. He Beat Connie Kalitta in a terrific first-round matchup, 5.932/236.22 to 5.946/236.84. A Kalitta holeshot made for a theoretical dead heat! But Dick got the win light. Jim Barnard beat him in round two, 5.75/238 to 5.878/236.84. Dick qualified #7 at Indy at 5.699/245.90. He beat Jim Head in round one, 5.781/244.56 to 8.06/104. Connie got some revenge in round two, taking a 5.63/240 win when Dick broke. That was Dick's final NHRA national event of the year. | 5.95 252 AHRA US 30 1982 defeating George Tolon in the first round, 5.92 248.96 loss to Bradley in the semis Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White

Notes: Lee failed to qualify for the opening event of the '82 season, the AHRA Winternationals. She ran a best of 6.75. She ran almost a second faster at the NHRA Winternationals, where a 5.79/245.23 qualified #8. A first-round 5.92/224.43 beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.23/223, and in the second round, a 5.86/226.13 beat Mark Oswald's close 5.89/242. In the semifinals, she smoked the tires to a 7.33/123.79 and lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.93/234. At the Gatornationals, she qualified #13 with a 5.94/233.60, but a first-round 6.44/221.12 lost to Don Garlits' 6.02/244. Lucille made a big splash at the Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 5.88/236.22 qualified #8, and a first-round 5.92/240 advanced when Larry Sutton broke. In round two, a 5.86/238.09 beat Butch Blair. She stepped up to a 5.65 (Low ET and track record) at 243.24 to beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.20/223. In the final, she met the first lady of drag racing, Shirley Muldowney. In the final, Lee took the victory with a 5.79/236.22 over Shirley's 5.93/240. She didn't have long to wait before she won her next race. That next win came at Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car show that had a 5.84 bump. Lee qualified second to her "teammate" Steve Hodkinson with a 5.750/244.56. She then was runner-up to Shirley Muldowney at Columbus. Lucille was a TR-3 secretary. Jolly Rancher also sponsored. Lucille's best times on the NHRA tour were 5.637 at Indy and 248.61 at Englishtown. | 3. 5.778 244.56 NHRA Baton Rouge LA 1984 (Semis)

Notes: Confirmed 6.02/230.76 from IHRA Bristol 1976 and 6.04/234.98 at Beeline Dragway Phoenix Winter Classic. | Paul started the '76 season by qualifying #1 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.03/229.00. The times held for Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. His 6.24/222.77 beat Dwight Salisbury, who smoked the tires in the first round. Another 6.24 at only 207.85 beat a tire-smoking Junior Kaiser in round two. In the semis, a 6.34/212.76 topped Bob Struksnes, who also lit up the tires. In the final, he faced the number two qualifier, Frank Bradley. In the final, Paul ran 6.31/224.43 but lost to Bradley's 6.15/222. Frank had Paul's number at the NHRA Winternationals, too, as Frank put him on the trailer in round two. The same thing happened at the Gatornationals. Paul qualified #3 with a 6.03/241.93, and in the first round, his 6.44/208.81 advanced over a tire-smoking Pat Dakin. But guess what? In round two, Bradley's 6.10/217 beat a tire-smoking Longenecker. He went to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals, where he made it into the semifinals before his 6.39/212.26 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.10/235. On April 11, he was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. Paul set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.97 over Dale Wilch. He lost to John Wiebe in the semifinal. Paul got another runner-up finish at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo. In the first round, he ran a 6.25/219.61 that beat Tharp's quicker 6.18/231. He had an easy run in the semifinal and then faced Don Garlits for the money. Garlits' 6.11/231 beat his off pace 6.64/173.20 for the title. He repeated his finish at the next IHRA event, the Dixie Nationals at Atlanta, right down to losing to Garlits again in the final. This time his 6.28 lost to Don's 6.17/233. In June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals and qualified way down the list in the #13 spot. He lost a motor while winning his first-round race with a 6.22/216 that beat Kaiser. In round two, he lost to the eventual winner Shirley Muldowney, with his 6.51/180.72 falling to her 6.03/240. Paul ran well at the IHRA Springnationals but failed to make the finals. He won the WCS race at Maple Grove. Paul qualified #1 with a 6.02 (Low ET) at 231.36. He beat Bob Edwards and Larry Bucher before dropping Don Durbin in the final. In July, he made the trek to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he qualified #9, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tharp. In that race, Tharp's 6.04/234 beat Paul's quicker 6.03/235.22. The following week (July 18), he took another WCS win. It came at the NHRA Division 2 race at Suffolk. He was really running well, beating Grant Stoms in the first round, with a 6.08/218, and in the semifinals, his 6.00 (Low ET) at 230 beat Tharp. He faced old pro Clayton Harris for the money, and Paul's 6.11 got him the victory over Harris' 6.27. The best NHRA times were 5.942 at Pomona and 241.93 at Gainesville. Formerly listed 5.905. Removing until we get confirmation.

Notes: Rance qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.901/243.24. He lost to Jerry Ruth in the first round, 5.76/242 to 7.98/120. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.04/234.98 qualified #14. In the opening round, his 6.08 fell to Tom Ridings' 5.99. The following week (March 13), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, a 6.070/234.37 best left him as the first alternate for the show. He also failed to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 5.917/241.28 was the third alternate. Things went better at the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #10 with a 5.894/237.46. He and Richard Tharp had a close race in the first round, that saw his 6.157/232.55 lose to Tharp's 6.135/230. Rance was the fifth alternate at NHRA Denver at 6.213/231.36. That was his final national event of the year. Photo from 1983 Springnationals, Columbus, Ohio.
